Many if not most of the old timers have a history that is worth telling! At 58 I had a granddad who fought in TWO world wars (He got sunk twice on minesweepers) my other gran had two brothers who were the victims of mustard gas (now that IS an unpleasant substance) and my ex-mother in law worked in a munitions factory in Wales where she was caught in an explosion that caused extensive injuries!
I do not think I am unusual in this!

Agreed. These stories are stories of real life and real tragedies, not the saccharine life some would prefer that we all lead. Life cannot be all peaches and cream, that is not reality.

@@totherarf same here. Both my grandads serve in WW2, my maternal grandma was a nurse in WW2, my paternal great grandad enlisted and went to fight WW1 at 15 years old.. My generation can't even begin to imagine how easy we have it

I have had the honour and blessing of having two families become one. We have 3 bio kids, and for the past 10 years we have also had 4 foster kids (siblings). My 2 bio sons were never really into playing with all things mechanical, but our youngest foster son is a car nut. He has high-functioning autism, and is very smart. He has always struggled with both fine and gross motor skills, but he and I have spent about 6 hours so far preparing to pull an engine and gearbox out of a Mk4 Golf. It is the first time he has had anyone show him how to properly use hand tools, and he has loved it. He hates getting dirty, but you can see him putting up with the grime of that old engine because he wants to get it out himself. He's banging knuckles, jamming fingers and whacking his head, but he's loving every second of it. These stories from Cy remind me that it's the little things that matter, time spent with our kids (or other people's kids) training them, listening to them, and encouraging them . Kid's don't care if dad is a neurosurgeon or the garbage guy - what they want is your time, your ear, and your wisdom. And if they get these, they are likely to excel in whatever they put their hand to, and build a better world.

I think this was a fascinating conversation with Cy; especially, being able to watch a video of a young Cy hang-gliding (really drives the point home, no matter how young and healthy we feel today, if we live long enough we will eventually slow down, through the natural aging process). Cy's generation is one of the first we can actually watch through video. I think it would be fascinating to hear the actual voices of my ancestors, who might have lived some 500 years ago, as well as to see them in action as young men and women. I used to encourage my older friends to set down in front of a camera and tell their lives stories - for, maybe countless generations of their descendants to come.

If only more people appreciated the wisdom of his generation. Think of how many stories go untold. If we all took the time to stop and listen. And the moment of happiness when you are doing something and see the look of joy and reminiscence on the face of someone who spent their life doing what you are attempting and they perhaps recognize something in you.

This was fantastic. Such an improv conversation is a lot like what Sir Laurens Van der Post used to do. He was a guest for a WEEK of free "chats" at the Boulder Theater in 1996, at the age of 92 or so. In the spirit of that, I have a couple of questions for Cy and Scott (because you MUST do this again):

Scott and Nate, please, please, PLEASE do a podcast of Cy's hunting, fishing and trapping stories! We old woodsmen are sitting on the edge of our chairs anticipating that very thing.

Cy is a legend among men. He's lived more real life than an average group of of 100 men. God bless him.
