Thank you, be safe, and be grateful.
Is there a UA-cam channel of just older folks telling stories? I could listen to this for hours on end.
You have found it in essential craftsman!
Karl Carpenter when you find it come back here and let the rest of us know. Several years ago I spoke to a lady who lived in Germany when the wall went up, and listening to her tell of her daring actions sneaking from side to side through the subway/train station was better than any book or movie.
I was thinking the same thing.
Karl .. It might actually be a good learning tool. our modern society has never had it so good, and has never complained more.
Karl Carpenter most people today aren’t smart enough to “listen”
This gentleman is a treasure
Keep talking, Cy. I’m listening for as long as you’ve got wind to speak.
i second that
Third!!
Seriously. Any chance this could be a monthly or quarterly thing?
Agreed
well put!
Cy is my nephew’s teacher, he can’t stop talking about Cy and how much he is learning from him. Thank you Cy for sharing your talents with my nephew.
You are doing a great service by documenting this. Quite a remarkable man.
I'm in grade nine right now, but I remember from grade 1 to 8 I would skip school a couple days a year and go to my great grandmothers house and listen to her talk about farming, world war 2 and her growing up as a kid. I think in one day with her I learned more then I would in a year at school! I just loved spending time with her up until she passed in December 2016. Best time of my life was spent listening to her talk and she enjoyed having me come, and most of the stuff she told be about I used to help my dad, grandfather and I on our farm.
Cherish those memories. I used to love to listen to my grandma tell me about growing up during the depression in Oklahoma dust bowl. I wish she was still around today but I'm in my 40s now and still have those amazing stories in my mind like she just told it yesterday.
Cry is obviously one of those rare individuals that appears to be wasting time right up to the point that he hands you a finished knife and then you try to figure out how the heck he did it so fast. Loved the video. Thanks for sharing.
We all desperately need a Cy at some time in our life to remind us of things that get forgotten, and direction that is lost.
What a character Cy is, I could listen to him all day.
This is priceless! I could listen to Cy for hours on end. We all could learn life lessons from guys like Cy. You are a lucky man to be his friend. Please do more like this.
The only thing missing is in the title… It would be better if it were, " Cy Swan's Stories Part 1 of 1000." : )
Absolutely! And each episode should be an hour long...
John Smi
My favorite Cy moment is the way he casually walked away from lighting the fuse on anvil launch.
I would pay money just to work and listen to this old mans story :) would be worth every penny.
Record as much of your time with him as you can! Wisdom and stories like his are pure gold!
So many stories and history. Much respect
JD Smith is a mentor and friend, and I am glad that Cy gave him credit. Cy seems like some of the best guys I knew when I was a kid and young man in Texas. Able to trust himself and his own ability, and eager to see what is next in life. Thanks for showing this treasure.
Recording this was great. He will be forever be memorialized. This is the exact kinda man I like talking to. Wish I could shadow him for a piece of time.
The horse knew the way in the dark... beats any fancy car with GPS but the ride was probably brutal lol
Listening to guys like this talk is humbling.
This needs to be a running series. Cy is a big part of what this world needs more of
I can listen to Cy all day n night. What a neat man. Thank you
I could listen to him all day long
I could listen to his stories all day!!
I would kill to hear more of the stories Cy has, such an interesting and experienced man
Just started rewatching Cy videos. They have kind of a surreal but comforting feeling to them bcz he reminds me so much of my own grandfather. Thanks-a-million for posting them and letting everyone else get an idea of what ‘my grandfather’ was like.
I’ve got to say, it often feels surreal for me to have him as a close friend. He’s not old enough to be my grandfather and too old to be a brother but I sometimes just cannot hardly imagine that I have a relationship with this guy. And as a bonus our wives are good friends also!
I want to thank you for making and sharing these videos of Cy. They are wonderful.
It is very interesting to hear Cy tell his stories.
I had to come back and revisit this video. I always love to hear Cy’s stories and words of wisdom.
To listen to a guy like this...so many life experiences, the knowledge and the caliber of character which is so rare these days... thanks for the upload, this one was special.
It’s amazing what this guy can do.
Cy is, by far, one of the most interesting people on Earth, and getting the chance to hear him recall parts of his life is a treasure to behold.
So let me put your channel in a neat "labelled" box. Your a good old timer tradesman, introducing a legendary tradesman to the future generations. I, for one am
completely happy to see technology today being used in a way that teaches, inspires, and connects the young to the past in a meaningful way.
The atrocities of war affected your father in a potentially positive way. Who knows if he would have been the gentle soul you knew without that experience. If anyone has a '31 Model A up in Oregon consider making Cy's day and let him take it out for a spin. From a complete stranger: much love and respect Mr. Swan, hopefully you keep swinging that hammer for a long time.
Now that was a fascinating journey. Thanks to both of you for sharing it...
I could listen to him all day and tomorrow,
I tell you I feel like buying a knife just because he made it
Here from AvE. Think I found a new favorite.
Chris E same, this channel is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I set here with tears in my eyes because it reminds me so much of my dad !
I believe that you know already just how lucky you are Scott for knowing this man,....... but just in case.....
Thanks ( very much ) for sharing and take care. 👍 👍
Ken Gamble same here...same reason
His description of the San Fernando Valley is surreal. I live there currently and all that farmland is suburbia and a few industrial areas.
Both of you guys are great characters who have excellent history lessons that many young men and women could benefit from. Keep on doing what you're doing because it's fantastic and your creating one heck of a following! I also agree with many other comments... I could sit and talk for hours with both of you! I cannot get enough of the heritage and history. Thank you!
I live in Orange County right now and damn am I jealous that’s he could experience such a beautiful place with out all these people
Noah Kelchner, just a fun story about Orange that your comment made me think of. My surname side of the family had been in Orange since 1893 so I have some neat history in the area (I am now in the IE at least for a bit longer) when we came here from the Basque country of what is now part of France. We even had a member of the family become a superior Court Judge for Orange. All my family has since now past away and I inherited some amazing photos when Orange was just the Santa Ana river bed or I guess you could say watershed. I got a picture of my father with his younger sister holding rabbits they had shot at bastanchury Lake which I now think is called Laguna Lake Park or something like that, it is crazy to go to Balboa peninsula and look at the photos of when the area was a wetland with a couple of summer houses from the rich citrus farmers. I got a photo that says it was taken on Chapman hill which I assume is now that restaurant there was nothing orange other then the little area by the circle... How times have changed.
What a great gentleman...
Really enjoy watching and listening to Cy
I could listen to old timers tell story's all day. So much knowledge that is in there head and will never be put online....
My grandfather used to tell stories like that. He even had some of the same intonation and speech patterns Cy was using. He's been gone almost 17 years and this really brought back some good memories! Thanks so much for sharing this.
Mine too. Most of his life he didn't talk much but I spent some time alone with him in what I didn't know was his last year. He told me how he grew up in detail. I miss him. Now I'm getting close to what my fathers age was when my grandfather died. Use your time.
Loving the longer format, more like this please!
Feel like a little kid again listening to grandpas stories. Great video, love watching Mr. Cy work his craft and with such ease, utmost respect
His stories i believe are a national treasure.
Fascinating. Interviews with Cy should be a regular feature on the channel.
Cy...WOW! I heard the same stories from my dad who grew up in Lancaster Ca. I live in Simi Valley just down the street from where Cy and Pops... it's sure not that way now. Wall to wall houses and shopping centers, and people.
I could listen to Mr. Cy everyday all day!
I just completed watching a marathon of Cy Swan videos, what an outstanding character! I'm praying be as busy working at 80 as he is. After 40 years working in the building trades, I'm still just as passionate about it as when I was a kid. I hope to shake yours and It's hand someday.
Thank you for allowing this great American to tell us just a small fraction of his stories. His hands shows me the pride he puts into his crafts.
Cy is the type of fellow a guy could listen to all day and never tire of hear'n. Everything he says is either interesting or funny. What a wonderful resource at your doorstep Scott!
Love this type of video, I could listen to Cy all day long. God help us when all the Cys are gone. Enjoy the treasures while we can. Thanks. Please make more videos like this.
I miss my grandfather so much it hurts. This man reminds me of him. Cy helps ease the pain. I could listen forever. Thanks for having him on every once in a while.
Essential Craftsman- Cy is a direct connection to what made america. The spirit and drive, fortitude and independence, and charm. The keyboard generations have no "link" to this. If we could only get more people like Cy showing and talking while they do things, younger generations might learn something. He is a treasure, share him every chance you get. Thanks for sharing.
Keep going. More pls. Thank you. Wisdom. Something not a lot of people have. Its refreshing. Thank you
This is why America is a great country; Men like Cy made it! Love the video and the stories!
This is one of those videos I will watch over and over to make sure I didn't miss anything. Absolutely awesome.
I regret that I never had a tape recorder to document all the great story’s from my Grandfather and Great Uncles . The story’s from the men back in that generation could tell , they were the best , they are the best !! God bless them all .
Can you imagine if a parent set a 14 year old loose with a .38 pistol and a 30-30 winchester today alone? Lmao the amount of outrage would be epic. I'm 45 now and even back when I was in high school us Ranch/ farm raised kids always carried around a pocket knife, even when we were in school. It was a tool to us and the thought of hurting someone with a weapon never even crossed our minds, ever. Dont get me wrong though we fought like cats and dogs from time to time but after we knocked each other silly it was all over with, no more issue.
Growing up we always had rifles and shotguns at hand as kids. We hunted and shot all our lives and never once had a problem. Those days are looong gone though sad to say. Simpler times they were.
I agree, 29 here but still grew with guns around me in a rural town, my mom was totally against guns but my dad didn't give a damn xD in his words "The boy needs to learn to use em". The issue I see with my generation is the lack of education by the parents (they want to be our friends, but we need them to be our parents), many folks don't bond with their family and society and never develop the social skills and responsability to relate to the world, everytime I did anything stupid I got nicely reprimanded and never did it again to avoid getting my ass whooped, and as you said, harming other people never ever passed throught my mind, because we embraced our responsability for our actions, simpler times indeed
Same here......I carried my treasured Case lock-blade to school from 4th grade on. I'd whip it out in the cafeteria to cut up something from my lunchbox and no teacher or student ever tackled me and put the place on lockdown. Out of school I carried a Crossman BB rifle across the handlebars of my bike to the nearby woods where me and the gang had a BB war with a three pump limit so getting hit didn't hurt too bad. It's a miracle I made it through middle school with both eyes intact. In 6th grade I got a .22 rifle and a .410 shotgun and carried them every on my bike as well. Hunted the woods for whatever was in season or was available for target practice. Folks never batted an eye a kid carrying a rifle or shotgun around. My how times have changed.
There not gone yet my friend... They only seem gone because there's very few people like us anymore.
I am 64 and recall collecting pop bottles to buy a pocket knife when I was 7 yrs old, just needed it
mcpheonixx I’m 15 and when my friends saw me carrying a pocket knife, they were in disbelief cause they thought it was for hurting people with, but I was just carrying it to use as a tool. But they couldn’t comprehend that
I can only imagine the knowledge and stories this man possesses
I could stay up for days listening to him tell stories and watching him forge.
I could listen to him tell stories all day....
Just now finding this...spectacular I could listen to Cy all day and night
What a great guy Cy is. Not many like him anymore.
Out of respect I have to say; Cy is full of it. And I thank you Scott & Nate for giving Cy an avenue to let out what he has learned to the rest of us. His intuition on how he does things is a joy to watch. He does not waste words when he talks. There is no wasted movement in the way he moves around.
Happy New Year Essential Craftsman. Keep up the great work.
What a great man to listen to. If you have a chance to share more of his stories with us please do.
I love listening to these old ones. These people have forgotten more than most of us will ever know.
As said already, Cy is a treasure. Not just for his knowledge and skills, but he remembers and is willing to share these awesome stories. Thank you so much.
You are performing such a service to future generations by preserving this man's history. Thank you.
This is why I don't watch TV anymore. Thanks to EC and Cy!
I love listening to these gentlemen talk about how the country was in their youth and their experiences and the technology of their time. Love their stories! Learn so much from gentlemen like Cy.
Everything's been said, but thanks. I can only hope that people like this keep telling their stories & passing them down to future generations.
Wonderful video. Man, this reminds me of sitting around listening to my grandfathers as a kid. I miss them. One of them was a master knife maker. One of my biggest regrets in life was when I was young, I ignored his offer of teaching me everything he knew.
Gosh I could just sit and listen to these old timers for hours, so much life experience. And it's free if you just listen.
Cy reminds me of my grandad, he had an old forge in Fossil Or. I was to young to understand the art but was impressed with the fire and the sound of him striking the workpiece.
I could listen to him for hours and never say a word.
Wow! Thank you essential craftsman for a little cy Swan therapy. I love your videos. I think Morgan Freeman has some competition in voice over. I could listen to Cy tell stories all day. Absolutely great
Ben Champagne I wish I had the option to like this comment more than once. This is a VERY well edited video. Love it!
The part where he says his dogs now are just, pets. Struck me hard, I'm always amazed how different ranch dogs are compared to city dogs, it's crazy
Big difference between a Ranch Dog and a Pet, learned that young when I went to pet my Grandfathers Herding Dog and he snapped at me, I asked Grandpa how he petted him, he just laughed and said "Ya don't, he's happy enough when you say Good Boy"
I could sit and yalk to him all day. You could learn so much from him in a couple of days rather than a lifetime in school. You sir are a hell of a guy, thumbs up to you sir
This guy will skyrocket your channel. I have already sent this video to four people. Thanks.
Love to watch him work and listen to his stories, reminds me of when I was young and was around my grandpa and he would tell me his stories, sure do miss that.
Love this guy. Reminds me of my grandpa
This is possibly the best vid on UA-cam. The knowledge, the stories, the fact they don’t make them like that anymore.
Great to hear stories from one who's seen so much. He's a wealth of knowledge.
Much respect to Cy! Great video!
Love this spent many days talking mostly listening to my grandmother talking about taking the last wagon train to California when she was a child . Miss those days
One of the most satisfying videos I've ever watched. Our nation was built on the character of men like this.
I could listen to Cy talk all day, it's just amazing
I'd love to hear more of Cy's stories about working for the pack outfit.
sometimes good men have to do bad things for good reasons, i feel quite privileged that my grandfather told me a short story about his time in the war. he didn't ever tell my father about his time during ww2, it saddens me that people take those stories to the grave. but i spose some things are left unsaid. you sir are an absolute master craftsman and story teller.
I could sit all day and here his stories.
Priceless and fascinating. They don't make 'em like this old fellow, anymore. Thanks so much for posting
What a great experience to share!
I could listen to Cy tell his stories for the rest of my life. My dad was a great story teller. One of my dad's best story was to hear him tell of how he bought the 3rd, 64 1/2 Mustang that rolled off the assembly line. He was an assembly line worker at the time. Cy's stories are a lost art in today's ways where most people are living by their cell phone in their face. Please keep these coming.
If you're watching this, you probably don't need this exhortation but here it goes. Find your grandparents, your great-grandparents, great uncles and aunts, and the elders of your community. Have them take a minimum of 30 minutes and tell you about their life and their experiences. Record it with your phone (audio or video) or camera or tape recorder and then save it for your kids and grandkids and gread-grandkids.
Whenever you get low on motivation or feel like your life is hard, play that 20 to 30 minutes over again.
Suddenly those TPS reports either get finished and you move on to important stuff or you walk out that door and find something to do that really feels important.
"Whenever you get low on motivation or feel like your life is hard, play that 20 to 30 minutes over again." Except that they had it a lot better than us, so hearing these stories is demotivating.
This was great, I'm hoping we can get another one if it's not too much trouble for you guys. Thanks for uploading!
Such an instresting man, could listen to he's stories for hours.
Listening to Mr. Swan talk about the pristine valleys of San Fernando and Grassvalley entertained me. It was 1986-'91 that I was in Sacramento Recruiting Battalion with Companies and stations throughout Northern California and and Western Nevada. Work was golden as are stories he retold. Preserved by your channel. Thanks!!
what a wonderful interview
No doubt Alan. And keep posting E.C.! We love it!!
