Blacksmithing - Forging a blacksmiths knife

  • Today I forge a simple knife that I call a "blacksmiths knife". Some say this general shape has viking age roots, but little evidence support this however.
This style of knife can be made with simple tools, although I use a couple of machines in this video. Use what you have available!
    Check out my recommended tools/gear:

The opening bit making crucible steel with the EZ Bake was hilarious! And I am sure you would have to give the dial LOTS of turns to get it hot enough. Not to mention fileing the spring for the powder.
I was hoping to see one of kitties use their door, but we can't always get everything.
The knife turned out exceptionally well.
Another five star video (as if you could manage to do anything else 😉).

:) Thanks! This one is not that great for carving but roughing out something works pretty good! The blade is simply too wide to cut narrow curves.

ok on page 7 of your manual for your oven it says "push knob firmly in and spin to your desired temperature" so you should be able to get it up to 6700F so that you can get the most perfect steel bars.

To add there are finds here in the UK that point to this style of knife being used by the Viking traders as a belt utility knife for eating and cooking but they were made of wrought iron and not particularly hard edged, most serious working blades were pattern welded or carefully edged with carbon steel like we often do now with Axes.

Google took me to a video of a blacksmith making a knife of this style, and I learned two things pretty quickly. First, blacksmithing in Skyrim is not very accurate. Although it does help with the view count. Come to think of it, so does bushcraft 🤣The earliest archaeological reference of this type of knife that I have been able to find, was discovered near the Themes in London and was dated around the middle of the 13th century.
The style with the finial fitting snugly into a curve set into the handle is attributed to the very excellent acheological Blacksmith Thijs Van de Manakker. Hes well worth looking up. 😊 great job on the knife, I would never have thought of fitting a catflap as part of the annealing process 😊
