  • Greetings Automotive Enthusiasts!
Check out this 1979 Porsche 928 5sp with only 60k miles! It’s a slick top as well! Same owner since 1984. Sitting in storage unit for years. It still runs and drives! What do we do with it? Part it or restore it? Have a great day and happy motoring!

It would be a shame to part it out, but bringing to back to 100% isn't economical. I would sell it whole as a project.

All engines with timing belts should be noninterference, but most are not.😮

Since I was a kid, I've always loved the 928. If it were my call, and assuming I had the deep pockets, I'd go for a full restoration. There aren't many of these around anymore, and as Bob suggests, they're probably going to continue appreciating in value; especially with a manual, lsd and sunroof delete. That is a pure sports car!

Why is it I love cars like this? It refuses to die and I think she needs one more chance. Someone would treasure this car, and I think with a detail and some minor work it could be a cars and coffee queen.

This car is right on the cusp. Maybe consider a sympathetic restoration. Leave some of the wear but complete running and driving, with some of the major cosmetic flaws handled. I think you'd recoup your money and someone would have a darn interesting Porsche. Just my opinion, you're definitely the expert here. Thanks for sharing ~ Chuck

I would leave it original, undertake paint correction as best as you can to restore, do all the main servicing stuff; oil, coolant etc and just drive and enjoy. Considering the kms its done, you can easily put another 30K miles and sell it and still wont be a loss. The restoration route is only for love and keeping it for life and not worth economically. Nice car and drives well!

As a 928 S4 owner - I say part it. The interior parts will be tough to find used for an early car in good condition and I'm sure there's a ton to do under hood as well that will eat your wallet. These are definitely a case of buy the nicest car you can find and I'm glad I passed by plenty like this knowing what I know now.

Cannot wait for this series/what becomes of this gem of a 928! I too hold the first v8 Porsche near and dear to my heart. I had one while in high school for a while, back in 2002-2003. My 928 was an '84 S Automatic in Zinc Silver Metallic with Red interior. The 928's sleek, sharp angled shape, unique pop-up headlights, and of course the distinguished burbly growl certainly add to the charm of these particularly "under the radar" Porsches.
Your 'newly acquired '79 928 showcases the highly desired Phone Dial wheels. The color is Light Blue Metallic. With lovely 2.7 V8 paired with the sought after 5 speed manual transmission make for a wonderful drivers car destined to charm the enthusiast with ease.

You took quite a chance driving a car on 20 year old rubber and 20 year old oil.
Nothing blew up, so I guess all's well that ends well.
I bought my 69 mach1 from someone up your way in 71.
I haven't been back to Wichita since the end of 79 except for my mom's funeral in 91.
