[How to lower a dirt bike] | XR650 KoubaLink Installation

- Here I have a 2019 XR650L that is in need of a suspension lowering because it sits a bit too tall. This process consists of dropping the suspension about an inch in both the front and the rear.
Steps (REAR):
- Remove wheel and chain guard to create slack in the chain
- Remove factory linkage and place the OEM bearing covers on the KoubaLink
- Install the Koubalink
- Grease the bearings on the KoubaLink via the grease ports
Steps (FRONT):
- Loosen triple clamp bolts
- Raise forks to about an inch or more depending on what your preferences are
- Tighten the triple clamp bolts down and secure the forks

Riders and Wrenchers, This channel has been recently rebranded into Madjack Media so please disregard the previous mentions of our former name, Gem State Motorsports and Outdoors. Thank you.
How bout a shot of the whole bikes profile .I get the closeups .but included before and after and stand back far enough so the bike doesn't filled the picture frame.
Thanks for the video, it helped my adventure in several ways. My bolts were already installed right to left. That made removal somewhat easier. Getting a wrench on the nut for top, challenging. Rethreading was fun, dropped nut, fell into skid plate. Went to remove skid plate, allen key bolt stipped, so the nut will be rattling around in there. Sigh! Went to drop the front forks, compared them to yours, apparently already dropped. Wondering if the bike was lowered and set back to stock link. So I have been running bike slanting downhill.- makes it go faster, haHa. Bonus round, trying to get that bottom link bolt to line up was challenging, tipped the bike off the stand and it wacked me in the head. Ended up using a rachet strap to raise the rear wheel until it aligned. All put together, I can mount and dismount much easier.
HA! that sounds like a good evening in the shop. Im glad I was able to help in some way!!
Thank you the video was good.
Great job
Good video
I'm not sure if it's got to do with the year, (I have a 2019) all I had to do was remove the bolt by the foot peg that holds part of the chain guard to create more clearance and support the rear wheel while the frame of the bike was lifted. The bolt slid out with no problem. The rear wheel removal seems a little extra.
Yeah this is kinda embarrassing for a motorsport shop lol
@@crappingmonkeyface we learn and move forward, no worries mate. Hope this helps for future reference and Goodluck with the shop.
Hey thanks for the comment. This method of installation may be more steps than some will need, but removal and reinstallation of the rear wheel is a relatively simple process and it created more room. The same results could be accomplished in other ways such as removing the chain master link as well but this is the route we took. Your method is just fine as well.
@@crappingmonkeyface Thank you for the comment, crappingmonkeyface.
just got the 2022 XR650L and am very glad to have found your video as I am definitely needing to lower my bike!
do you know if the KoubaLink part comes in an even longer version to lower my bike even more than that? also, will this affect my factory warranty?
Hey Zachary, I would contact your local Honda dealership to ask them about the warranty. As far as I know, KoubaLink makes only this size for the 650. However, if it still isn't enough, you can always reupholster your seat and remove a bit of the foam. Doing so could drop your saddle position by an extra 0.5-1.0 inches in addition to the lowering link. Enjoy your new 650!!
I just got a 2023.Had no idea the bike was that tall when i ordered it.Did you end up lowering yours?
@@rca3rd Hey Ron, yeah I did end up lowering it. The Xr650L sits wayy taller than most people think from just looking at it.
@@madjack_757 Yeah i found that out when they delivered mine.I am 5'11" too.Did you adjust the forks to match?
Yeah I did adjust the forks
Great video.
Someone may have already asked but what did it drop the weight height to?
I meant simply height
@@bavarian11 Hey Kevin, the bike sits 36 inches / 3 feet tall from level ground to the top of the surface of the seat cushion. Though the aftermarket seat could provide different measurements than you would get with an OEM seat.
@@madjack_757 Thanks,
I really appreciated the video and information.
I have an 88 nx 650 and it allows me to at least touch the ground at 32 inches.
Why honda chooses to alienate 50% of the potential buyers is the question.
@@bavarian11 Of course! Yeah sometimes bike development can push some buyers away and intrigue others
@madjack_757 I sat on a stock 650 and I was like this is the most uncomfortable bike I've ever ridden. I'm 6 ft and had to stand on tip toes. How much total do you think you lowered it?😊
At least the new part has grease zerks...they must know and care about what they are doing
It is definitely a well thought out, high quality part.
How much did you say it lower the bike ?@@madjack_757
