@@philyoungblood1067 Exactly, I lived in those times when it first became the hit. It was a warning, Civil rights failing, cuban missle crisis, President Kennedy had just been killed, it felt like society seemed to care more about money than people. To me it feels like Disturbeds' version is now the anger for not listerning back then.
Notice the boat of musicians crossing the river to the people on shore with sheet music, they need each other to end the silence. Music is the universal language of the world.
I always look for this comment in every reaction to this version, it's something I've been saying for years and you got it too. That is the real meaning that Disturbed wanted to get across, not that cliché that everyone is repeating about the "warning" and other nonsense. Josh actually captured the meaning of the video very well.
@@Module79L the warning was that we were losing ourselves to consumerism and propaganda and we weren't looking to each other, listening to each other, respecting each others voices, and being as one. That was the original warning. David's version is the anger over not heeding this warning but at the same time showing that we still have a shot to fix what we broke, we can use music to say what needs saying and do so together, hence the visuals in the video.
I’ve always been struck by how many people miss what I think is such an obvious and powerful visual - the song hints at *ending* the sound of silence, yet the video illustrates one way it could happen.
@@BillBliss - I think Disturbed added a new line to the lyrics with this video: people watching without seeing. It's almost mind blowing how many people miss the message of the video.

@@Alie01 I miss Chester. I also really, really miss my dad. He passed away in March 2021, he was only 46. He was a huge fan of Linkin Park and also of Disturbed and plenty of other artists and bands that I also shared a love for because of him. I like to think my dad is somewhere rocking out on his guitar with Chester singing alongside him ❤️ damn my dad could play! Some of my favourites to hear him play were B.Y.O.B by System of a Down, Business Suits and Combat Boots by The Agonist, and A Place for my Head by Linkin Park (or literally anything by them haha) and he had some original instrumental songs that I loved hearing him play because they were *his* songs. I miss him so much.
I wouldn't even venture a guess to how many covers have been done on Sound of Silence. This is the first one Paul Simon promoted by linking to his social media. That pretty much sums it up.

Mr SingerDad, this song stirs such emotion in my soul. First time I heard this was at work, it stopped me dead in my tracks. I wasn’t even aware I was crying. There are no words.

No matter how many times I listen to this song, I have the chills. David has such a powerful voice. When S&G did the song in '65, it was a warning, now David sings it with rage because people didn't listen to that warning. I loved your reaction when you dissected the lyrics. David Draiman and this song is my permanent nightly lullaby. Last thing I hear before I go to bed. The oddest part of this is I'm 64. I absolutely adore the sweetness of this man he is so well spoken, intelligent and very aware of so many injustices occurring....and he instills it into his artistry.

(Guys correct me if I'm wrong) He even stopped his show one time because there was some disturbance in the pit of the crowd. He actually told the woman to come up on stage to get her away from the ruckus. She stood next to him while he was singing. Also a lot of his songs are to help people through anxiety and depression. What a man!!!!!!!

My favorite way someone describes this version and the original is that this song is an ode to resistance. Simon and Garfunkel sang us a warning back in the 60s. And now that we've fallen into the artificial emptiness of the neon light, Disturbed bellows it with rage and sorrow to wake us up.
As someone who has battled depression for years, listening to this song i really feel so many emotions, this song allows me to cry and feel good about myself.

@@franktriggs Actually the jaz singer was a remake of the Al Jolson movie "The Jaz Singer" which was the first talking movie made in 1927. The story is Al Jolsons (Asa Yoelson) story.
According to David he was kicked out of high school (Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study) in his freshman year. In an act of revenge he had pushed an older boy through a second story window. At age 16 he was a heroin addict. At age 18 on New Year's Day he was found unconscious under a parked car in Chicago wearing only his pants. His girlfriend died of a heroin overdose, and Disturbed's song "Inside the Fire" is about that. He cleaned himself up and studied to be a defense lawyer but gave that up to manage a health care facility. He was fired for embezzlement. So I seriously doubt he was trained as a cantor. @@unknownrider3071 You are correct in all of this but also as a Cantor when he was young.. Up to the rebellious age. I love watching his interviews, so the anthethesis I what I "assumed". Humble, honest and phenomenal. He went to Israel, check those interviews out, so thrilled with his heritage to be there.
I was floored by this performance as both a classic rock lover and Disturbed lover. David sang this with the passion and energy this song deserved. I thought Simon and Garfunkel were too cheerful for the lyrics. He did this song justice. He trained as a Jewish Cantor and actually went to Israel to train. His range is phenomenal.

Davod’s performance (live) on Conan was incredible considering he was battling a nasty case of the flu (high fever and all!) He is a musical BEAST and seems to be able to perform under any circumstance!!!!
The way to look at it…
The original was sung as a warning and with hope we would listen.
Disturbed is 40 years later and shows the anger of a message never listened to.
And the Gregorian version… pure prayer we would listen.
I was a child during the 60s, and I always felt that 60s folk music didn't match the lyrics. It was an angry, violent time. Paul Simon was angry when he wrote the Sound of Silence his performance doesn't convey that emotion. All along the Watchtower was another song that I felt was better in the hands of a rock musician. Like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan admits that Jimi Hendrix's cover was pretty darn good.
The S&G version made you think. Disturbed made me FEEL.
It's a dark somber song. Think of teens and people on their phones. Self absorbed and not communicating with others. Written 50 years ago but relevant today
Especially relevant today! People have their faces buried in their phones, no interactions with people. Everyone texts, little talk. No one wants to listen to someone who has a different point of view..etc..
Currently on a binge watch of reactions to this particular song and David's voice. And I have to say, I'm not disappointed by the reactions. Definitively at 3 stages in the song itself when you think "wow that's good" then "whoa" then the fist in the air for the heavy part. This song and his voice just gets into the soul.
An FYI - he was quite ill singing the live version on Conan. He had a high temperature with flu and was really worried he wouldn't pull it off but, of course he did :-)

I love how they all say the same thing after that last "sound" before the last "of silence", and it's like "woah". Check out the Charismatic Voice if you haven't already.
I just reacted to this for the first time recently and IT BLEW ME AWAY! I too, like to see others reactions to great songs/artist like this! I have found so many great artists that I would have never found if not for my viewers suggestions. A reactor's job is the BEST! lol. He did a great job breaking it down.
I gained new appreciation for Paul Simon after hearing this version of his song. David Draiman and Disturbed's rendition make you listen to the words! I was so moved, I listened to it for days! The words are just as poignant today as when Simon first wrote it! Draiman's voice is just amazing to me!

The whole song is a warning about people ceasing to meaningfully communicate with each other. The neon god that that they made was referring to television...have to remember the era when Simon &Garfunkle released the song; though it is probably more relevant today with people's obsession with their phones. It has been said that Simon & Garfunkel's original was a warning and Disturbed's version is anger that the warning wasn't heeded.

Indeed I very much agree with the assessment. I really adore this version because of the true and honest emotion david brings to this song, i very much feel songs in my soul and this version of the song made me weep with sorrow it was just that powerful to me.
I wonder why people think "neon gods" is television? Do ya'll know WHEN this song was written? Not many people had tv's then! There were never NEON television's! Hasn't anyone ever heard the phrase "neon jungle"? They are talking about SIGNS! Vegas, New York, everywhere. Selling, buying, rushing about and tending to ourselves, phone's, casual sex with no connections other than physical. Think people! Simon and Garfunkle were starting to see the emotional and familial disconnection in 1963! I was 9 years old and on a small Reservation in Oregon. We didn't have tv's, I guarantee you that. But people were starting to get them. We stopped going to movies and play's. Stopped gathering for Sunday dinners or just visiting. Now "social media" is everything! We don't need anyone! We don't want to need anyone but ourselves! Like me doing this on my phone, by myself. As entertainers they saw it coming. And yet when this album didn't take off they went their own way's. When people began to realize what the words meant, the album took off like a bullet. Then they got back together again and the rest is history. And we are still replacing people with thing's.

David Draiman...a voice to die for! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! An awesome talent and obvious training to deliver what he does!! Can sing like an angel or the devil ! Loved your reaction and your take on David's performance. Good job! Try "The Night" by Disturbed too.....slightly heavier....

if you listen to the live version on Conan, note 3 things: he was sick during the performance, the producers sneaked in a little autotune(which he found out after and was upset about) and you can hear how easily he goes from the vocal fry back to clear resonant voice

Metal music has been unfairly stigmatized in the minds of so many people who remain blissfully unaware of the hidden wellspring of incredible, professional talent today's metal musicians and vocalists have in their bag of tricks.
It's sad that modern pop is full of untalented crap is the norm when people that are good at one or more instruments, way better lyricists and usually put on a show since it's not you and some backup dancers, in a band everyone is part of it if they want.
I think part of that is because metal musicians are often discouraged from stepping outside their own milieu because their fans then accuse them of selling out.
@@cormyat07 Exactly! I am so glad they did this song. David said that some of the hardcore Disturbed fans did call them a sell out at first, but he said that they have come around to love it now. Quite honestly, if I had not come across the Conan O'Brien Show version of this, I would have never known how absolutely beautiful his voice truly is!
Michael Bolton one of the best vocalists ever in all of ever started out in heavy metal and his range is off the freaking charts
@@sersa4179 Wouldent call it heavy metal but some of it was hard rock, to bad it was a bit to much Glam for alot of peoples taste.
Alof of metal musicians have alternative bands, like Sully Erna, good drummer, killer vocalist for Godsmack also write softer music and play the piano. Hell even Metallica have soften some tracks down lately and done some more acoustic stuff, really good.
David Draiman is a Master of his instrument...!!! There are four distinct places in this song that produces chills and goose bumps every time I hear it... I absolutely love the way his voice distorts as the lyrics/intensity increases. He starts softly and builds the song into anger and flat out rage before ending the song with an abrupt softness that mimics the song's beginning, creating a sense of it coming into a "full circle"...!!!
David took formal opera singing education, then applied those traits to Disturbed's metal sound...
Additionally when he begins the song it sounds to me like a prayer

This was exactly my philosophical take on the lyrics. This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone verbalize what I believe the lyrics were actually saying. And the way Disturbed delivers the song hits you so hard that you can no longer pretend like this problem does not exist in the world, but at the end after this cathartic journey through the song, you are left with a realization and hope for change.
You really have to listen to some songs done by disturbed, to hear the style of singing David does, to truly appreciate his cover of Sound of Silence. His usual raspy, growly, scream is such a contrast to his beautiful singing. It really shows his range of style and is absolutely amazing

If you watch the live performance, check his mic placement. He never strays an inch from it, his power and fry are 100% in control and healthy!

Every time I hear this song I have goosebumps and a full body shiver. Every time. It's like it's too majestic to take in.
Fun Fact: David decided to sing this song as he did, because of him doing heavy metal music, he was told he couldn't sing, so he decided to show people he could. :) Also when Simon heard the song redone by David, he told him the song was his now :)
One of my favorite analogies for the difference between the original and Disturbed's cover is that the original was a warning about problems in the direction of society, and the Disturbed cover is an expression of the anger a new generation feels that the warning went unheeded.
I'm sure it's been shared before but David was classically trained in singing and knows the correct way to "fry" notes with his voice. He does, after all sing metal...but you'd never know it with how clear the rest of his register is....one of the greatest singers I've ever heard. And I listen to music all the time
Texting is talking without speaking and listening without hearing, we have lost the ability to communicate on a personal level. We must change that and become feeling beings again

Scarily, it was long before texting, but it was exactly about people not communicating. Now someone will literally mill through the streets, subway train, stores, etc and not speak to a single person while glued to their phones. Hell, someone from the past may very well walk into a classroom, waiting room, bus, etc, and, seeing everyone having their head bowed, hands clasped, and a neon glow illuminating up on their faces, believe they are praying to a neon god...that Steve Jobs made.
This song completely moves me. David Drainman has both an angel and a demon within him but it is also from the haunting music and stunning visuals, even the play of light, that draws my attention to the awesome lyrics.
I loved your reaction. I heard David in an interview say that he actually took singing lessons for that vocal fry. He's an awesome singer in the first place, but I love to hear, see and read that even professionals care enough to improve what they do..... lol...this was my most played song of 2018 and 2019....probably will for 2021 as well. the song is about loneliness and feeling apart from others, disconnected, and the soliturde and frustration growing out of it - and for me, nobody was able to catch this atmosphere better so far than Disturbed

Apparently David is a trained cantor. I hadn’t imagined that the Down With The Sickness singer had this in his back pocket. Paul Simon shared the video on his own social media, he’s never done that before.
I love how in everyone of these vids for this song. THe first reaction is just: "....." speechless
When Paul Simon wrote this song, it was about people not being able to connect with one another. It was a warning of how things would go. When David sings it, you can see that he is talking about how we didn’t heed the warning and we don’t connect with one another. We’ve not learned the lesson that we were warned against.
I have watched Disturbed perform this song countless times. His voice and the video,well ,amazes me. I'm 66 so I also know the Simon and Garfunkle version. LOVE them and Pentatonix did their own awesome version! Brilliant writing that still makes you feel and think in 2020!!!

Disturbed's Sound of Silence cover is an homage to the original. This is not Disturbed's normal sound. They did and amazing job with Sound of Silence.

I never heard of Disturbed before listening last year to reactions on You Tube (thank you, covid-19). His voice is a gift, and that he uses it (as far as I could tell) to speak out on injustices is another gift. I'm not sure if he has messages of hope in his other songs, but sometimes we have to appreciate the messenger and look for a solution from elsewhere.
-Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive.
-Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan.
-David Draiman: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."

This song is seen as an important kind of warning from a long time ago. And sadly its still applicable today. I always saw the digging up of the guitar and everyone gathering up their instruments as sort of them bringing this song back to a time when its message is needed again.
His voice is mesmerizing!

I loved your reaction video. The way you broke down the lyrics before you listened was something new and a great way to look at the song. Also you gave me a new take on the video. I had always looked at much of the video as the story of the resurrection of the original song by Paul Simon.
If you did your research after the fact you probably found out that Paul Simon loves this version of the song and actually linked it on his social media. He also talked to the singer and told him “it’s your song now” which I believe is the single greatest compliment Paul Simon could give. You’ve earned a new subscriber.
This is what I love most…people who are musically gifted approaching this song either knowing nothing or knowing maybe Down with the sickness. Which would lend itself to a pretty hefty pre conceived idea. Then they hear it. Their musical knowledge kicks in…okay he can sing. Wow, what a rich deep beautiful tone. He leaves little bread crumbs of what’s to come…then WHAM. He’s got you. The analysis falls to shreds as you are pulled along and swept away by this miraculous gift that is the unexpected brilliance and utter perfection of David Draiman.

I believe the lyrics speak of the absence of communication in general. I feel that the music represents the beauty and richness of someones thoughts spoken. Censoring, cancel culture, mocking and ridiculing those who have opposing views!!! How appropriate this is for today...people talking without speaking...ie: writing comments under a video, texting, email, etc. It feels like David Draiman is scolding humanity for allowing such a condition to exist. IMHO. Peace🌿

I have been binging reactions & I'm surprised no one has really commented on the very beginning of the video before the music starts. It is silent and the piano is half buried, as if to say, this is where we're headed-dead silence, no music, no sharing. He had the flu during that performance and any trained singer will hear how it affected his performance, including the brief moment of auto tune, which pissed him off so much.
Music is a universal language. It’s my belief the imagery is using music and instruments to support the message.
Lack of real communication is prevalent today in every way. People have their noses buried in electronics. Couples and groups sit with each other and instead of having real conversations they text and tweet. Social media is a platform for emotional war. People truly do not listen to one another anymore. They throw words at one another. They close one another off and refuse to even acknowledge what someone else has to say.
People used to sit and have real conversations. Conversations in which we listened and spoke about our differing opinions and even embraced them. But as technology advances, people will grow more and more emotionally distant.
Disturbed’s version of The Sounds of Silence has prompted me to set my phone aside when I’m with someone and really LISTEN and talk. It’s made me try my hardest to do the same with texts and posts I’ve read. To absorb what the other person is saying and even to attempt to try and see things from their point of view.
I’m not always successful, but thanks to Disturbed, I try.

It was during the era of the Vietnam War and the opening of the movie “The Graduate” that the "Sound of Silence" became a heralded reminder of humanity’s search and need for truth and meaning in a world that occasionally seems forlorn or out of control. Simon & Garfunkel did not write this about the Vietnam War, but by the time it became popular, the war was on and many people felt it made a powerful statement as an anti-war song. In the US, this hit #1 on New Year's Day, 1966. As a 72 year old whose husband was drafted into the Vietnam War, I heard this song (Simon and Garfunkle's version, of course) many, many times. I must say that that version was very easy to understand the lyrics that were being sung. Not so much so with Disturbed version. However, if you are familiar with the lyrics, Disburbed version brings forth MUCH more emotion, in my opinion. It is brilliant. Bravo! Bravo! to Disturbed and the vocalist is amazing! And I certainly agree that it is very relevant in today's world. Sadly.

I LOVE the S&G version, but never heard the lyrics until this! I like that you are looking at the lyrics meaning. The images are fantastic and convey Disturbed interpretation. I was struck by the opening. It is not an accident that the video starts out in total silence. Instruments are in ruin, symbolizing the loss of music, creativity, and perhaps ignoring problems at large. His anger builds for not heeding the warning of silencing artists and with them, the people. The messages that are being ignored or silenced are written on the tenement halls.
I find it interesting that the images in the lyrics are urban but the video is sylvan (could someone explain this jarring dichotomy?) Perhaps they are stressing the innocence or truth as nature. Some say the song is depressing, but I disagree. Seeing the ending as sad is wrong. All of their images turn hopeful at the end. The people and instruments are now whole and moving to a sunlit shore. They are saying all is NOT lost. That with understanding we can give art (music) back to the people, stop the censorship (music industry?), and allow artists to show us the truth. Finding truth is ultimately the reason for art! (Disturb does other covers such as Genesis, but their typical style is not this, more heavy metal....'Down with the Sickness' is quite heavy subject matter as in child abuse)

They are like Linkin Park, sort of Metal.
The lyrics are by Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel and their version sounds less dark however, this version put a whole new spin on this Anthem song from my Teen years. I played this on the guitar and sang it but not quite like this.

I think the original song was a warning, about television and the dangers of losing sight of our personal physical connections. And that David's version is more like a lost soul trying to reach out through the darkness of what's become of us, since we didn't listen to the original songs melancholy warning

I had a music professor that didn't allow anyone to talk while playing music. He said it kills the emotion that the song was trying to instill into the listener. I guess they don't teach that anymore.
What many don't understand is that if I just let it play through this reaction would not be on UA-cam and would've been blocked altogether. UA-cam does not allow us to do that as much as we would like to. Also, I do reactions and analysis. This cover is so transcendent it's what great music is truly about - that his father wanted David to be a cantor really speaks volumes.
Is it any wonder that Paul Simon's genius + his beautiful vocals in unison with the stunning beauty of Art Garfunkel's voice😳💕...not everyone mayl appreciate that I'm honoring the fact that they're all Jewish; I picture the delight God Himself must experience when He hears this cover...all their melodious gifts they share with the world.
The Sound of Silence has become a triad of songs starting with the Simon and Garfunkel's og, then Disturbed in the middle section and closing with Pentatonix combining both. It's a great evolution with each part holding it's own and being enhanced by the others.
I have to disagree, with pentatonix the meaning is lost amongst their gimmicky performance, just my opinion...
at the end when the musicians are standing on the shore and there is a great gulf between them and the people...then the musicians get in a boat to cross the gulf to reach the people...awesome
Best interpatation of the song I have heard is Simon and Garfunkles way was the warning of what could happen if we don't speak and listern to each other and Disturbeds' version was the anger for not listening to that warning back then. The people need a voice and need to be heard. Through Music we can ALL unite no matter who, what, or why. Meaningful in those times and meaningful today.
I get goosebumps every time I hear this version because David Draiman is such a amazing singer.
Music is the savior of humanity and can bridge a gulf between people.
