I’ve watched a lot of reaction videos for this song. Not many people review/analyze the music video version. I appreciate your attention to detail and how you interpret every aspect of the production, especially the meaning behind the images. I’ve listened to this song so many times. I’m obsessed. As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, and has trouble opening up to anyone about it, I’m moved every time. Seeing your emotional reaction during the review was everything! Thank you for showing that vulnerability.💜
Many people have mentioned that they knew the original song but never really paid attention to the meaning of the lyrics. This version draws you in and forces you to hear and feel the meaning of the song.
100%. I also think that both the time (2016) and the performance offer a very different interpretation of the lyrics, even as many of them are just as relevant both in their original context and as they were back when it was first released.
I remember feeling stunned after seeing their performance on Conan, especially when I learned he was sick with the flu when he performed it. After Paul Simon saw the live performance he said that this is now Disturbed’s song, which is high praise, right? In an interview, David said he went out behind the studio after recording and burst into tears. He was completely overwhelmed by it. So good!
OMG, you certainly are knowledgeable about music, lighting and video techniques and storytelling. I'm sure I left some words out of that compliment. Thank you so much for explaining why I'm feeling such strong physical effects every time I watch a reaction to Disturbed's _Sound of Silence_. It's like very powerful warrior angels poking me in the eyes while singing angrily about connecting with other souls. I must have watched a hundred reaction videos on the two versions of this Disturbed song in the last four years and I like to try to pinpoint the exact second when the listener feels their first twinge of pain. Thank you so much for all your reactions and thoughts.
This is the best description and explination of the song, singer, band and lighting I have heard to date. It's made all so powerfull and feeling deep inside. Like you said brilliant!
I am writing this while you are trying to get yourself back together. Welcome to the first time of hearing David sing the Sound of Silence. You have just joined many others in not expecting what you just experienced. The next step is to watch the Conan O'Brien Show performance on 3/28/2016 which has a 20-piece orchestra behind David, the audience gave him a standing ovation and applause for over 10 minutes, the backstage people came out to see who was singing, and the set was nominated for a Grammy, and has been view over 100 million times(the most for any Conan show). David is a songwriter, singer, and producer. I am 76 and have heard this since Simon & Garfunkel first sang it in 1964 and have never understood the song until I heard Disturbed's version. I would like to have a DVD of this video with the audio from the Conan Show. Every time I hear this done whether on video or live, it is the same. The live shows I have seen are Houston with Miles Kennedy and the Moscow performance. There are several interviews with David about the picking of Sound of Silence and how they made it; try to find them, I think you will find them interesting. You might want to check out Disturbed's video of "Hold on to Memories".
It is extraordinary when you finally see or hear a version of a piece of art that makes every last piece of it click for you. I've experienced that before, and it felt like such a gift. I did get S&G's version, but I got something different from David, and I think that's pretty awesome too. I will definitely check out the Conan version - going to give it a bit of time so I have a little distance between them, but I'm looking forward to it.
The S and G version was a nice, polite, 'afternoon tea' version sung by some nice kids. (Aged 24 and 23, respectively.) This is an angry, full throated version sung by a fully adult, grown up, man! So naturally you are comparing grapes to apples! The Disturbed singer is now nearly twice the age of Paul Simon of 1964. So not exactly kids, but it was just past the Eisenhower administration, 1964, and things now are very, Very different compared to then. So different ages of the singers singing, and in Very different eras! So of coarse you can't fairly compare the two versions, for they are all but 2 entirely different songs! Plus the added sophistication of what music videos have become since they were first made for TV in 1981. The Sound of Silence first came out in 1984--- still in the infancy of music video making! Not a fair comparison in any way, shape or form. These are 2 different songs. Each great but in different ways, times, and sophistication!
Well, I'm 63 and grew up with Simon and Garfunkel but, admittedly, never knew the meaning of the lyrics. At first, I hesitated to watch this because I have so much respect for S&G's original song and I'm also not into heavy metal. But I saw all the views and I had to watch. I fell in love with this version and can finally truly understand the lyrics and the way David drives the point home with his vocals is incredible! For me, the video is what pulled it all together. Absolutely amazing! I watched the Conan performance and was less moved but I'll go back and try again. What I wanted to say TO YOU about your reaction is 😮🤯. I was as fascinated with your interpretation as I was with David's performance! The way you broke apart every nano-micro second of the video both musically and visually was mind blowing, in my opinion! I don't know beans about music but I learned so much from your reaction. I really enjoyed YOU enjoying the performance. You are so happy!😊❤ Well, you have a new sub for sure and I will be back for more!🥰
You have just listened to the best cover of any song ever done. David's range is amazing and his diction where you can understand every word is outstanding.
It is certainly a contender for me. Yes, while I knew he was an impressive singer, I think this gives a much starker impression of that - I was truly blown away.
Brilliant. I've been binging these reactions for a few days. I'm a techie ( mainly lighting and stage management) and it's so refreshing to hear a technical reaction rather than that of a voice coach or a musician. Thankyou
Brilliant ! I have watched quite a few analysing this video & song & everytime i see something else. Yours has been head and shoulder above any. Thank you
I cry everything I hear this rendition by Disturbed! It IS very powerful but it is sung by a fully grown, adult, man who is able to admit having real feelings and is in touch with them. And one of his feelings is justifiable anger with the alienation in (our) life! He isn't afraid to feel or to show his feelings--- unapologetically, unashamedly, and openly. What a nice change from what is served up in current society! Yes, a real looking/sounding man, who also feels, fully! And openly. All in all, how nice to see some of the barriers coming down from what was and how life is changing for the more positive.
I really enjoy that you've analysed all aspects of both the performance and the video theme. It's quite refreshing after so many others. I appreciate other people's enjoyment of something I love but I really want information about the technical aspects of arrangement, theory, videography and storytelling. You've expressed my feelings and interpretations perfectly. Thanks!
@@davidkreacts every time I hear his voice singing this song and watching his emotions sends shivers down my spine. You have made my year so far! This is awesome.
I’ve lost count at the number of reaction videos I’ve watched of Disturb’s “Sound of Silence.” Your reaction video is by far my favorite! What you’ve pointed out both musically and stylistically was incredible! I am going to follow you to find out more about you! Thank you!
I was introduced to this by the live performance on Conan. As a life-long S&G fan, I was shocked by how much I love this version. Some comments put it: S&G was the warning; Disturbed is the angry 'you didn't listen' version; and Geoff's is the somber, sad 'I'm so sorry' version.
This song is a masterpiece of Paul Simon. An incredible melody, as well as the depth and timelessness of the verses, the essence of which awakens expressions of different personal feelings. I wonder if Paul Simon, when he wrote these lines, had any idea that he had given a kind of universal definition of the state of blindness of a society?! And that at the age of 21! I mostly agree with those who recognize concern and warning in the original, and condemnation, anger and rebellion in Disturbed's version. I like the energy of Disturbed in this song, which awakens and encourages a person to question his own state of consciousness. Each of us should start with ourselves first. That's the key, right?
Absolutely agreed! I would be fascinated to see inside his head when he wrote this, to understand exactly what he was seeing in society - it's so massively impactful that I feel he must have understood something, but I can't imagine he realised how long it would be relevant. I enjoy the questioning in this too - it forces the listener to interrogate their own position on things, and I feel like that's needed these days, so yes, definitely agree.
AMERICA IS MYSTERY BABYLON “WRITTEN” ON HER “FOREHEAD” ~ MAGA BABYLON THE GREAT-AMERICA THE GREAT “Conform no longer with the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind.” “Come out of her, my people”, LEST YOU PARTAKE IN HER SINS AND PLAGUES! The Holy Bible This IS the warning, that makes one silent. Even now.
Best of many reactions I've seen. Most overlook how much the visuals impact our emotional response to this masterpiece. This reaction is a learning experience. Thank you, David.
As a huge fan of Disturbed, I went to see them in concert. And, this is an interesting tidbit: they use this song as a break for David's voice. So instead of putting all the rage and frustration, he sang it with despair and defeat. And oh my! It was amazing too and so moving. David is incredible and one of the most ineresting male voices nowadays.
Oh and BTW, great video! Very detailed. It's pre-Eurovision Song Contest fever here in Europe and for the first time the entire world will be able to vote, so that's a big thing for a European pop songs contest. I don't know much about music -just what I love and what I don't- but there is one singer, especially in her live performance, that I find extremely interesting. She's using opera, head voice, chest voice and whistle note in what seems to me like a very constructed song. This is the song "Queen of the kings" by Alessandra from Norway. First song ever for this young 20 years old artist. I'd be really curious to see what you would say about her national performance so I'd love to see you make a video about it: ua-cam.com/video/zt7U0-N1mlk/v-deo.html
Ooh - that would be fascinating to hear. Yes, I'm realising his vocal range is significantly broader than I realised - I have a lot of respect for him. Glad that you enjoyed the video. I haven't followed Eurovision for a few years, so didn't realised they'd opened the voting up - that's going to be interesting. I'll have to make a point of watching this year. I'll see if I can check that video out before the competition, though I do have a few things lined up so might not make it.
Ooh - that would be interesting to hear. I am realising that David's range is significantly broader than I realised, and I have a lot of respect for his versatility. Thank you - glad you enjoyed the video. I haven't followed Eurovision for a few years, so I didn't realise they'd opened up the voting - that should be interesting. I'll make a point of watching this year. I don't know if I'll get to the Alessandra video before the competition, but I'll try. I do have a bunch of stuff lined up.
I have watched a lot of videos like this but this was THE best! The explanation you gave on every part of this video with sound explanations was so informative as it helps to know what the song means in all aspects. Thank you
" the words of the prophets are written on the subway wall and tenement halls", are the poor, the disenfranchised, the everyday person, many who live in poverty, or who trudge to work every day to survive; often they are the ones who truly get it, who see the truth of it, who see the greater picture! Who write out, or express themselves in Graffiti on the subway walls & tenement halls. They express their frustrations in an art form that is done in anonymity, but represents the masses. A form of communication and rebellion against the 'order', against the establishment. It comes from the heart, from their hands, in sharp contrast to the repetitive communication that comes from the stark neon lights! This is one of the most meaningful lines in the song to me.
It is one of the most extraordinary song lyrics ever written I think - such a powerful commentary on society and its blindness and deafness to what's going on sometimes.
This was a fantastic review. I enjoyed all of it; from your emotion watching it the first time to the breakdown of each moment in the video. My breath catches in my throat every time I watch it. David is phenomenal and brilliant.
This version paired with the video is undoubtedly incredible. I've never seen a reaction format quite like yours and I have to say it was worth every minute. To hear the Arrangement, performance, and video broken-down piece-by-piece was a treat. I think you would really enjoy the "Disillusioned" music video by A Perfect Circle. It has a very similar meaning and music video to compliment. Thank you!
Thank you very much - I'm glad you enjoyed my style. I know it's not for everyone, but it's there for those who enjoy it. :-) Duly noted on the recommendation - added to my list. :-)
There's another aspect of this video you may have missed. The song itself, if you listen to it alone, gives you an impression of "It's too late; there's no hope left." But if you watch the video, at the very end, you see the boat approach the other side. Just as the sun comes out. The video gives us a very literal ray of hope that, maybe, we can change things from the way they are.
I did see that, but realise watching back that I didn't express the hope very well. It's a great way to add a slight uplift and a wish for the future into a very apt societal commentary.
Anyone else forget to breathe when David starts with that vocal fry? Honestly, my heart starts thumping loudly in my ears as I realize I forgot to breathe 💀😂
I'm still having trouble breathing, the emotions are all right there in my throat, not to mention my eyes reacting too. David and the Disturbed band are absolutely brilliant. 😊😊😊
I think you captured this video, rendition of the the music and the absolutely stunning quality of David's voice better than any one else. I really enjoyed the way you broke it down.
I loved your in-depth analysis of this. You opened my eyes to the absolute skill of everyone involved in the process of not just the song but the combination of the lighting, positioning, structure, every tiny detail of every aspect that came together so beautifully to make this such a powerful assault on the heart, soul and mind.
I’ve just come across your video today. Having watched a huge number of reaction videos to this superb song, yours is far & away the best. I love the way you break down the official video & interpret the meaning of the manner in which it is filmed is so thought-provoking. I am obsessed with the Disturbed version of this song. It gives, combined with the video, an entirely new meaning to the lyrics. Thank you for this superb reaction video
I grew up on S&G singing this while Dustin Hoffman rode the walkway at LAX at the opening of The Graduate- perfect background for a .movie about youthful confusion and rebellion, which resonated with us in the 60's. This rendition just tears my heart out. I keep coming back to it - there are so many levels in this production. Thank you for your analysis
Great reaction and I really enjoyed how invested you got when analyzing it. How could one not... I get goosebumbs every time I listen to it. I knew the original and listened to it a lot when I was young (and didn't know english very well because its not my first langurage) so I was very happy when Disturbed released their version. It's sung so powerful and David has such a good voice with so much control over it. It's a treat hearing him sing a song where one can hear how good he is. The lyrics of the song seem to fit in every time, with different reasons and meanings, but still... just a masterpiece of art. Both versions are masterpieces in their own way.
Thank you for the analysis and meaning of the video. I have tried to figure it out and now it makes perfect sense. In fact, when I first saw the length of this video, I wondered what all could be said about this song to take almost an hour to discuss. Then I watched your video and I hung on every word. Your explanation is impeccable. I'm now a subscriber. Thank you.
Wow is the word of every reviewer I have watched. Thank you for sharing your multitude of insights to this powerful rendition by Disturbed. If they never sang anything else, they will be remembered forever for this one!!! I can't get enough of it!!! David's voice, awesome!!!😊😊😊
Just found this video and I am SO EXCITED!! Your format is great. I love that you analyzed every layer from vocals all the way to video production...and from what appears to be an educated POV!!! I've watched a lot of reactions to this video (as well as their Conan performance) and this is the best reaction and analysis I've ever seen. I can't wait to go down the rabbit hole and watch your other videos!!
This is a song I fell in love with when it was used in a play I performed as a sophomore in high school. It followed a one act play where a character was coming to terms with a terminal illness. I was positioned backstage for that moment every night we performed, and I had to fight to keep my breathing steady and get ready for my play, as I was onstage next. Its lived in my heart ever since, as I am deeply affected by both music and theatre, having done them all my life. I noticed you mentioned certain consonants and cutoffs of David's being muddled or muffled especially toward the beginning of the piece. I always felt that the first word that occurs on, "sleeping", is a clue. Many of us slur our words when we first wake, especially if we were deep asleep and dreaming. And with a "vision" or dream as poignant as this, he's not even fully awake before he's communicating it to us, the message is that important. His clarity grows as he begins to directly take action to try to prevent or rectify what he saw in his dream (the rest of the video.) He's fully awake then, and passionately trying to make a difference, before its too late. I can think of so many things for which this could be a powerful image, but following your consensus that the song is about humanity's struggle to communicate and pairing it with the imagery of silent people (singers perhaps?) and broken instruments, the video feels like its lamenting our growing dismissal of the arts, through which so much emotion can be conveyed so beautifully. I'll never see this song quite the same way again.
I loved how shell-shocked you appeared on the reaction. One might even say you were "disturbed". ;) Come to think of it, I probably looked the same the first time I heard it. I find this video incredibly haunting.
I love the original song, always did. I love this too, though very different. And then came Geoff with his version and I love that too. Someone said that the original was a warning. This version was anger that no one heeded the warning. And Geoff then showed the grief that no one had listened. That's one way of looking at it. Actually the live version of this is just as astonishing.
I don't know who told you it is, but see why it's a "rite of passage?" Lol. It's extraordinary. (Plus there are some people 🙋🏻♀️ who check periodically for new reactions, so it draws new viewers to a channel.) Nicely done!
What a fascinating insight into this extraordinary performance by David Draiman and Disturbed. You effortlessly put into words for me so many of the feelings and emotions I experience, and am unable to express for myself, every time I watch, this particular video. Your wonderfully insightful commentary on the huge variety of visual and musical techniques, skills and knowledge employed by everyone involved in the production of this cover, from David Draiman himself, the band, the orchestra, the lighting expert and the cameraman, was fascinating and enlightening. Thank you.
Because I’ve listened to this song so often, I was so annoyed at your constant interruptions in the Silence. However, as I continued to listen your reactions and explanations, you’ve made me a fan of yours. This is truly a masterpiece created by David Draiman and Disturbed. Thank you for your enthusiastic and knowledgeable musical interpretations! Well done! 👍
Like someone already said, S&G is the warning, Disturbed is the anger, and Geoff's the sorrow. I loved S&G for many years, and for many songs, not just this one. Then I heard Disturbed, and personally didn't care much for it (I'm not an angry person, I guess). Then Geoff topped them all; my favorite!
I’ve listened to this song so many times. What a gift to experience it with you: It felt new again. I had to sit in the parking lot at work when I saw that you had reacted. You are better than going home on a Friday afternoon! Thank you thank you. I hope you do the Conan version too. It’s an equally, if not more, moving and powerful experience
You are too kind, but thank you very much. I may do the Conan version in the future - I feel like my knowledge isn't as well geared towards live performances, but I know there are at least a couple I want to cover that videos don't exist for, so we'll see how they go. :-)
I think a lot of people (Especially those who saw Disturbed's performance on Conan) think of this as the definitive version. Even though I grew up with the 1960s version, I can't say those people are wrong.
I can totally see that. Having listened to both of the S&G versions recently, I think this is my preferred version now. I still love the S&G ones, but the pure emotion in this is hard to move on from.
Wonderful reaction, can't wait to see you do Geoff's version, This is the Rage and frustioan, his is the sorrow. I always got from "the words of the prophets are written on the the subway wall and tenement halls" the they aren't written in the cathedrals or in the university. The choice of tenement specifically, the prophets are where the lowest people are. The ones most lost who see the farthest.
I've been thinking about those lines a lot. It's one of the aspects of the song that make me think Simon was trying to explain an actual dream he'd had. I hear the phrase "Neon God" and my mind immediately goes to Commercialism and Greed. But the people living in tenements, and the unhoused trying to survive in the subway, have no money to spend. By "Waking" Logic, a Neon God would be opposed to those people's messages. not embrace them as the words of the true prophets. But in dreams, everything shifts. And an opponent can become a guide in a blink. It's like this is a snapshot of Paul Simon's subconscious trying to work out where his "true voice" is.
Thank you! Yes, I'm looking forward to Geoff's too - I feel like there's a lot of potential in this song that not every cover will realise, but I feel like Geoff will do so just as well as David did here. That's a great observation - thank you for sharing.

Thank you for the suggestions! I haven't really looked at live work on the channel yet, because I feel like my methodology lends itself more to videos that have produced visuals and potentially stories to follow through. That said, I do have a couple of songs I want to cover that actually don't have music videos, so I'll have to do the live for those - I'll see how those go. In the meantime, these are provisionally on my list. :-)
You do need to watch the live performance from Conan now. I love the video because of the stunning imagery and really enjoyed your observations, but I actually can't wait to hear your takeaways from seeing him sing live, the set it's performed on, the live orchestra, etc. He was ill the night of that performance and there was apparently an audio person who decided he needed auto tune during post production in one area, which made David very unhappy. He says he doesn't want to do anything in the studio he can't reproduce on stage live. Not sure if you are aware, but his early training was as a cantor, which I feel you can hear now and then in some of his musical choices even in some of his hardest metal. It's where he learned breath control and holding those extended notes. You can actually hear that influence in the live version of Down With The Sickness from Germany pretty clearly in an almost chant. Can you imagine his voice ringing out in a temple with great acoustics? Since you enjoyed this video so much, there are two others of a very similar aesthetic ... black and white, artsy, beautiful lighting, full of symbolism ... "A Reason To Fight," (the official video, not the official "music video," which are both worth seeing) and their cover of Sting's song, "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You." I really think you'd enjoy both.
I'm definitely thinking about it - so many folks have recommended it. My knowledge base is much better geared towards reactions with visual storytelling, but I have a couple of live songs I want to cover that don't have videos, so I might do the live one of this too. I have a lot of respect for David for having that attitude re live performance - that's a strong statement as an artist. I didn't know about his cantor training until reading the comments on this video, but it definitely explains some of his vocal technique and his musical choices. I would love to hear him in a truly luxurious acoustic - I've sung in a few cathedrals in my time, and it's a wonderful experience on both sides of the stage. Thanks for the recommendations - added to my list.
A lot of reactors used the Conan live version, because they prefer live to studio performances. Personally, I think this video is top of the food chain. The live performance is unquestionably excellent, but he was actually sick while doing it (which makes it even more extraordinary), but that did, in fact, have some slight effect on his voice. Plus, I feel if an artist goes to the trouble and expense of producing an actual video of this caliber, it is a mistake to dismiss it so. (Also rude) As a Pentaholic, I have to say it pains me to admit that this performance outranks the PTX cover, though it's a tough choice for me. But the power and symbolism put into this video, in particular, affect me deeply. Something that always strikes me, but that no reactor has even remarked upon, is that dissonant first guitar chord. I will say that, until you pointed it out, I had never realized that the reason it sounds so odd to my ear is because of the direction it's being strummed, from the high string to the low one. Gods, I love your reactions, and this is why. :)
A couple more thoughts - one of the songs on their Parsley, Sage album is "A Poem on the Underground Wall," which is, to me, closely related to the lines in SoS about "the words of the prophets..." It's only a four-letter word, but it's still something the writer needed to say. Looking over the list of songs on that album, I am struck by how insanely varied in tone they are, from the sadly philosophical "Dangling Conversation," to the lovely sweet "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her," to the crazy "Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine." Then there's the title piece. Or the painful juxtaposition of "Silent Night/7 O' Clock News." "A Simple Desultory Phillipic" forever gave me the phrase "that's the hand to USE ... well, never mind." (I, too, am left-handed and always find the unstated part of that line amusing.) Sheesh. It's a good album. Bit weird in concept, though.
Yes, I was a little surprised when I looked to watch other reactions after I'd done this to find that I'd reacted to the "wrong" version, but I think this is better suited to my style, as I like seeing the choices a group/artist makes visually as much as with the audio. I am looking forward to the PTX version too, at some point in the future, and expecting to see something very different to this! :-P I'm glad that you enjoy my work, and thank you very much for the kind words. :-)
That's an interesting comment, and I'm fascinated by your thoughts on the album too - I don't know Parsley, Sage as well - I will have to check it out.
Just found your channel. This cover is not only brilliant but it reduces me to tears. David forces the listener to actually LISTEN to the words as only David can. I'm old so I remember when S&G released the song. I always thought the song was railing about big business and the commercialization of society. Thank you so much for providing the real reason they wrote it.
I've never seen you before and almost didn't stop to listen, though now I'm glad I did! I appreciate your commentary. I will listen to you more! Thank you!
In his younger years, David Draiman was a classically trained Jewish Cantor as his father and grandfather before him. That where his ethereal sound comes from.
I loved the original Simon and Garfunkle version waaay back in '66, but this!!! OMGS!!! Simply grabs you and holds you and sends child down my body; simply stunning, and repeats every single time I hear it! 🌺😻🐾🎉
I agree the conan live performance was absolutely stunning but i feel the video for the music video is just amazing and this and the live versions make me cry and ive seen it well over a thousand times. When i first saw this version it was my first " WHAT EFF WAS THAT?" I just couldn't believe id ever hear such a sound that would bring me to tears from essentially the first line.
Won't be able to watch this tonight, so just sacrificing a comment for the algorithm gods - Disturbed's cover is pretty overwhelming emotionally but have some incredible vocals. I look forward to being able to watch your analysis another time!
I'm so glad you finally tackled this one, David. Your reaction certainly did not disappoint. Please give thought to reviewing the Conan version, too. 🙂❤
Thank you very much - glad you enjoyed. I have the Conan one tentatively on my list - I feel like my style is more geared towards studio videos than live ones, but I also have a couple of songs I want to cover that don't have studio videos, so we'll see how they go.
More than one reactor has reached for their mouse to check if they're muted during the silent opening, particularly the Charismatic Voice. (I recommend you watching her reaction. It was the first of her videos I watched) As someone else has said, lots of reactors prefer the live Conan version, but I prefer the visual storytelling of this version. See you in the next one.
Loving the detail you covered. I grew up on S&G and wore out the vinyl. IMO this video, song, vocals and music with the emotion (the word is angst and, yes visceral) is a masterpiece done by master craftsmen, including Paul Simon. I predict that it will be a subject of study in the arts for future generations. What do you think? Future Louvre installation in the music video genre! I just watch it over and over obsessively. Damn it Disturbed and also Thank you Disturbed. Great reaction vid. Thank you also DavidK😅
Thank you so much! I agree with your thoughts on this - and yes, Simon is still a part of this video. While I do try to credit the original writers, it is also important to recognise that they are still a part of every cover that is made of their work. I could see this being a piece of art for sure - I also love the idea of things like music videos and video game cinematics with music becoming a more recognised art form, rather than just something people enjoy. So much work goes into them! Thank you again for your kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed my video.
I first saw them on Conan. I sat and cried listening to them. The original song never had any effect on me. I can't listen to this song enough. It is my all time favorite song. Ok so Bohemian Rhapsody is now in second place with me.
I was a year or two too young for Beatles, so Simon&Garfunkle was the music I grew up on. The very first record I ever bought was Bridge Over Troubled water and all S&G music was my staple diet in my teens. Obviously I love the original and have strong opinions on covers of it. Many feel called and (a very) few are chosen. I have heard references to the Disturbed version for a long time but have never felt the need to listen to it, somehow, so this is actually first time for me as well. As I've said on other artists, I can se the talent, but no- this is NOT a version I can embrace. It does rub my back up the wrong way. Knowing that many people admire this highly I will be the heretic here. Other versions which I love is the original hands down. The Hound&Fox with Adam Chance is a folksy interpretation, very beautifully sung. I find it very emotional and true to the original, but still very much their own. Tommy Johansson has sung it as well, lamenting the death of a close friend who died young at the beginning of covid, and whose favourite song it was. It's said to be based on the Disturbed vs, but Tommy reinterprets it in a way that I fully take to my heart. Seeing the personal sorrow on Tommy as he sings. I can't say I recognize any Disturbed in it, now that I've heard this. A brilliant interpretation which I fully embrace is Geoff's, which he released the other week. Don't know how many times I've heard it by now and I doubt I'll ever be tired of it. Dearly as I love your analysis and I can see how you like it, but on this one we part ways. This will not go on replay by me. It will be interesting to see what you think of Geoff as you come around to it. To me it's just as overwhelming as NEM was.
I wholeheartedly agree with you on the Disturbed version. As well as H&F and Geoff, you might try Peter Hollens and Tim Foust - their version also reflects the original. I have not heard Tommy Johansson's version, I may have to go look for it. But don't bother looking for Tom Ball's version - it is more like Disturbed's. I think part of it is generational. I actually heard a (younger) reactor refer to the S&G one as 'whimsical'! But the original came out when Sing in the Sunshine and My Boy Lollipop were topping the charts, so it was quite a departure from that. And as much as I enjoy hearing David's analysis, I really don't know if I can stay the course to watch the entire video.
Bridge is a fabulous album - solid first choice right there! I knew more of The Beatles' canon, but preferred Queen myself (mostly because I loved the piano, and Freddie's playing was a style that was very new to me when I first heard it). I'm interested to read your responses having heard this for the first time with me. I fully understand that it's not for you - it's an extremely different style, and I'm curious how I would feel if I had grown up with S&G the way you did. I think I first came through to them through Simon's solo work, and more specifically You Can Call Me Al, and that was later in my youth when I was around 16, so that early love wasn't there as strongly, though I adore their work now. I think every version you mention here is on my list other than Tommy's - now added. That sounds very vulnerable and poignant, and I look forward to hearing it. The H&F version sounds cool too - folk feels like a sidestep from S&G in some ways, so I can see that working well. Geoff's one I'm very excited for, given the buzz it has received. I almost did a comparison video of all of them, but I think I'd rather space them out - it has clearly been covered in so many VERY different ways that I want to do them all justice and not rush them in one take.
Perfectly fair, and you'll receive no judgement from me for that. Not every style is for everybody - I've been lucky with reacting to things I really enjoy so far, but I'm sure there will be something that isn't so much my style at some point. I can see why someone would call S&G's whimsical, but having been brought up by my grandparents, who loved that era of music even if I didn't hear a lot of S&G, I know that's not the case.
Right. Now you need to react to Geoff Castellucci's cover! :p But, in all seriousness, this is one of my favourite song covers because of the emotion that's put into it, as well as the arrangement that's allowed to slowly build and build until it reaches the climax of "It's written on the walls!" Thanks so much for this reaction, and looking forward - as always - to the next one.
Oh, I know I do! Going to wait a while though - let this one work its way through me so I'm not influenced by it, as I know it's very different. Totally agreed on your comments - this is a stunning arrangement.
One of the most comprehensive and spot on analysis of this song, performance, and visuals. Well done!❤
Yep...bang ! 😲😎
Can we listen to the song
I remember feeling stunned after seeing their performance on Conan, especially when I learned he was sick with the flu when he performed it. After Paul Simon saw the live performance he said that this is now Disturbed’s song, which is high praise, right? In an interview, David said he went out behind the studio after recording and burst into tears. He was completely overwhelmed by it. So good!
The passion he puts into this is very clear in this video, so that makes sense - it's wonderful to witness.
I'm a fifty eight year old man veteran hard assin this song made me cry
This version is a gut punch and has reduced me to tears on numerous occasions, it never fails to give me chills.
Absolutely and fully understandable.
Exactly! He made me cry the first time I heard him sing this. Simon and Garfunkle was the warning and David is the screaming that WE DID NOT listen!
Best cover EVER!?
(Aged 24 and 23, respectively.)
This is an angry, full throated version sung by a fully adult, grown up, man!
You are so happy!😊❤ Well, you have a new sub for sure and I will be back for more!🥰
This is the most in-depth analysis of this song I've seen, I thoroughly enjoyed it :)
I'm very glad - thank you very much.
I have seen dozens of analyzes about this but this was the best. It had everything I missed in others.
David is awesome, his voice is magical. I love this and the way it was done. Thanks for playing
You have just listened to the best cover of any song ever done. David's range is amazing and his diction where you can understand every word is outstanding.
It is certainly a contender for me. Yes, while I knew he was an impressive singer, I think this gives a much starker impression of that - I was truly blown away.
@@davidkreactshe’s trained in opera!
Not only opera training but also cantorial music. I can hear the passion of liturgical music.
@@prairiedog8482 I am sorry but he was not trained in opera but as a cantor.
I first saw them on Conan. I just can't get enough of listening to this song. It's so beautiful. I could listen to it on repeat all day long
Brilliant. I've been binging these reactions for a few days. I'm a techie ( mainly lighting and stage management) and it's so refreshing to hear a technical reaction rather than that of a voice coach or a musician. Thankyou
You're welcome. Very glad to hear that you enjoyed it, and appreciate the input from someone in your profession. :-)
Thanks!
The Sound of Silence sung by David Draiman gave me goosebumps and still does. You have seen what he has chosen you to see. He is such a gifted man
That is an extremely apt phrase - he really has curated this experience very carefully.
@@davidkreacts every time I hear his voice singing this song and watching his emotions sends shivers down my spine. You have made my year so far! This is awesome.
If that's not the best reaction I've seen, it's definitely in the top three.
Your analysis of this INCREDIBLE performance is just great.
Thank you so much - I really appreciate the very kind words.
I’ve lost count at the number of reaction videos I’ve watched of Disturb’s “Sound of Silence.” Your reaction video is by far my favorite! What you’ve pointed out both musically and stylistically was incredible! I am going to follow you to find out more about you! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you continue to enjoy my work.
Excellent reaction! I’ve watched so many reactions to this song and yours is the absolute best! Thank you, keep it up!
You were not ready for this!!!!!!
Extraordinarily, it seems to split S&G fans down the middle, which is truly fascinating to me.
@@davidkreacts ... I like all 3 versions. I choose which one to listen to based on my mood!
@Jazie Franks ... their version is beautiful and very moving.
Thanks for doing such a great complementary critique. 😯
I love that you go all the way through it first!

Best of many reactions I've seen. Most overlook how much the visuals impact our emotional response to this masterpiece. This reaction is a learning experience. Thank you, David.
I agree. Most reviewers ignore the beauty & skill of the video. It really is brilliant & compliments David’s magnificent performance
I might be interested in hearing that version, it must be closer to the original.

Thank you
Your analysis of the video and the song is wonderful. The video is eloquent and, I think, adds to the deep meaning of the song.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed. Yes, this is a truly remarkable performance.
Duly noted on the recommendation - added to my list.
This is the most comprehensive in-depth analysis of this song.
Such a pity that he didn't win the Grammy in 2017.
Anyone else forget to breathe when David starts with that vocal fry? Honestly, my heart starts thumping loudly in my ears as I realize I forgot to breathe 💀😂
Cannot disagree - it's incredibly powerful.
Thank you for calling the raspy growl he adds the proper term.
I'm still having trouble breathing, the emotions are all right there in my throat, not to mention my eyes reacting too. David and the Disturbed band are absolutely brilliant. 😊😊😊
This is a masterpiece ❤
I think you captured this video, rendition of the the music and the absolutely stunning quality of David's voice better than any one else. I really enjoyed the way you broke it down.
These are my absolute favorite reactions. Exactly how I felt first hearing this. Thank you
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Tears and chills each 300+ times I listen.
Understandable.
I also was STUNNED after goose bumps all over my body. It's brilliantly sung & the orchestra was perfect.
I loved your in-depth analysis of this. You opened my eyes to the absolute skill of everyone involved in the process of not just the song but the combination of the lighting, positioning, structure, every tiny detail of every aspect that came together so beautifully to make this such a powerful assault on the heart, soul and mind.
I've seen all the reactions to this masterpiece. Yours is by far my favorite! I get as engrossed as you do. Thank you!
Thank you - that is very kind of you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you.
It was great to see the break down of the video and the music. Great job!
Wow is the word of every reviewer I have watched. Thank you for sharing your multitude of insights to this powerful rendition by Disturbed. If they never sang anything else, they will be remembered forever for this one!!! I can't get enough of it!!! David's voice, awesome!!!😊😊😊
After watching several "Reaction" videos, I'm so pleased to hear extensive commentary on the video as a whole. Most concentrate on the music alone.
It is one of the best covers ever! If you get it and get chills then it's a right of passage. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
David, David, David! OMG, baby!
I’ve watched this reaction several times and have learned something new each time. I now watch videos with a new eye. Thank you,
Just found this video and I am SO EXCITED!!
Love your reactions. Thanks for explaining the history of this song. ✌️
David has always been Extraordinary. The band played at a bar that I worked at from 1996-1999.They still are rocking it!
I loved how shell-shocked you appeared on the reaction. One might even say you were "disturbed". ;) Come to think of it, I probably looked the same the first time I heard it. I find this video incredibly haunting.
Haha - yeah, I didn't realise how much it had affected me until I was watching it back to add my comments. It's quite the gut punch on first listen.
Well, got the chills yet again! ...everytime I hear David and guys sing/play this damn song!! Amazing!!
I still can't find that comment, but yes, I get it! Thank you very much for the kind words. :-)
Well done! 👍
Perfect reaction, thank you
You are welcome, and thank you for watching - I'm glad you enjoyed. :-)
It's a great comparison between them all. I'm looking forward to checking out Geoff's version in a while.
In the end the people came together, you cant have one without the other. humans need each other and yes silence like a cancer does grow.
Absolutely - love the symbolism in this video.
Thank you so much for your analysis. So entertaining & informative. Loved your enthusiasm ❤
Davids voice is spectacular! And what he does to this song is just.... Wow!!!!!!!
Thank you! Yes, I'm looking forward to Geoff's too - I feel like there's a lot of potential in this song that not every cover will realise, but I feel like Geoff will do so just as well as David did here.
That's a great observation - thank you for sharing.
That is a very deep thought - I think I need to go back and listen to their version and unpack this, but thank you very much for sharing.
Another wonderful comment - I love how thought-provoking that line is, and how much commentary and exploration it has sparked.

Loved all your ahhhhh’s and uggggggh’s ;)
Haha - yeah, there were a fair few in this one!
It’s a work of art , a masterpiece, you don’t just listen you absorb every note and every word.
Absolutely!
(Also rude)
As a Pentaholic, I have to say it pains me to admit that this performance outranks the PTX cover, though it's a tough choice for me.
I totally agree on the Conan vs this version! You have a healthier David, and all the visual storytelling of the video itself.
I'm glad that you enjoy my work, and thank you very much for the kind words.
That's exactly how I felt the first time I heard this.
I've never seen you before and almost didn't stop to listen, though now I'm glad I did! I appreciate your commentary. I will listen to you more! Thank you!
I traversed through other video reviews but yours is the most appreciative. 👏🇨🇦
In his younger years, David Draiman was a classically trained Jewish Cantor as his father and grandfather before him. That where his ethereal sound comes from.
That makes a great amount of sense - I feel like both factors, training and legacy, feed into a person's performance style.
I love watching people's reactions to his version.
I loved the original Simon and Garfunkle version waaay back in '66, but this!!! OMGS!!! Simply grabs you and holds you and sends child down my body; simply stunning, and repeats every single time I hear it! 🌺😻🐾🎉
You’re reaction was just like the first one I had. Just awesome.
I've listened to it many many times and it grabs me... The Best Cover EVER!!!!
Won't be able to watch this tonight, so just sacrificing a comment for the algorithm gods - Disturbed's cover is pretty overwhelming emotionally but have some incredible vocals. I look forward to being able to watch your analysis another time!
You are not kidding with this comment!
wow what an analysis! Great job!
Best reaction to this I’ve seen out of the many I’ve watched.
Speechless……says it all for you
100%
More than one reactor has reached for their mouse to check if they're muted during the silent opening, particularly the Charismatic Voice. (I recommend you watching her reaction. It was the first of her videos I watched)
As someone else has said, lots of reactors prefer the live Conan version, but I prefer the visual storytelling of this version.
See you in the next one.
I can believe it! (Although it didn't help when I then did mute it!)
I will check Elizabeth's video out for sure - thanks for the tip.
@@davidkreactsElizabeth did a great interview with David Draiman too! Definitely worth a listen!
I love to see people react to it. Its amazing❤❤❤😊😊😊
Love the honesty in your reaction. Pretty much couldn't say it better myself!
Thank you - that's very kind. Glad you enjoyed my video.
Someone stated it perfectly... Simon and Garfunkel version sung by an angel. Disturbed version sung by an archangel!!
No argument from me!
I first saw them on Conan. I sat and cried listening to them. The original song never had any effect on me. I can't listen to this song enough. It is my all time favorite song. Ok so Bohemian Rhapsody is now in second place with me.
Leaves you speechless beautiful, brings out emotions ❤️
Maybe a recap after you have reacted to them individually - not the full videos, but snippets to illustrate your talking points, pros and cons, etc.
I have to add how impressive your commentary is! Mahalo! 🌺😻🐾
