- MPGomatic.com puts a 2011 Hyundai Elantra [ Full Review: www.mpgomatic.c... ] to a week-long test drive, rolling up over 450 miles. This Elantra Limited PZEV was fitted with the six-speed automatic transmission.
The Elantra Limited PZEV is equipped with a 1.8-liter inline four cylinder engine, producing 145 horsepower (HP) and 130 foot pounds of torque.
Is the Elantra really capable of 40 MPG?

i drove the elantra today and i LOVED it! the 2013 feels better than the 2011 and the engine seems quieter in the 2013!
i have a 2007 civic ex sedan and with 4 people in the car, i averaged 47 mpg throughout my trip to florida from louisiana this summer. i love the new elantras but i also LOVE my civic. although its a bit rouch and noisy, its one of, if not the best, car ive ever owned.
@hehh543 To clarify the Elantra's horsepower rating, it's 145 for the PZEV version sold in California or where it's required, and 148 for all other Elantras. Torque ratings are 130 and 131 lb ft, respectively. Hope this helps!
What I took away from this review is that this car is unchanged from the previous Elantra in terms of driving excitement and dynamics, but offers a higher level of features in typical Hyundai fashion. I chucked a bit during the 0-60 run when a link to the Elantra Touring 0-60 was posted. Those are a lot quicker, but its a sportier car in SE trim. The new Elantra would benefit from quicker shifts. Still, it should steal plenty of Corolla sales. Cant wait for the new Elantra Touring.
Hey Dan, how would you rate the Hyundai Elantra 2011 over the Suzuki Kizashi?? I saw that you reviewed both cars but a while back. They have very similar features and both look really good. How would rate both of them and which one would be your pick??
@SeadGBosnia this thing kills the crappy toyota corolla
If you look at comparison tests it actually gets about the same, sometimes even lower than the competition even though it's rated for higher MPG's. Also for example the 2012 Ford Focus has 160HP while the new Hyundai Elantra has around 148 HP. So even though the Focus weighs more than the Elantra it's actually faster.
It's different for everyone ... cars are like shoes ... it all depends on how it fits YOU. :) Fun-to-drive, I'd go with the Accent over the Elantra, although I prefer driving the Veloster (looking forward to the new turbo). Overall, it depends ... if you're in a colder climate and need to carry backseat passengers, the heated rear seats in the Elantra are remarkable ... who would've thought they could bring that in a car in this class? The Accent hatch gets the nod for versatility.
@flatblackstrat The Cruze Eco is a cool little car. But I'll have to get back to you on that in a few weeks, after I've driven the Focus for more than fifteen minutes. Looking forward to the Focus ST and the Veloster ... both should be a hoot.
I will see if I can get into a 2014. Not sure when it might happen ... stay tuned!
@KVT10 The Kizashi is definitely more sport-oriented. I tested an AWD automatic Kizashi, wish I had the chance to test the FWD manual. Both could use more scoot. Not sure when the Elantra will get a GDI engine, like the Sonata. I tend to favor the Sonata and the Kizashi over the Elantra. Looking forward to driving the Veloster ...
The've definitely improved, but I would still take any car mentioned at the end except the Chevy Cruze over an Elantra any day of the week.
@yellowcow13 I've only been in the Focus for a total 15 minutes, but will have one here for review this month.
@talldude123 Though the Accent is rated higher I still don't think it would average much better than the Fiesta, they're probably neck and neck. The Fiesta does come with a sequential manual like you were saying but technically it's an automatic, there's no manual shifting involved, it shifts for you.
I'm surprised this thing didn't go above and beyond the 40MPG, but I guess after hearing all of the stories from people that never usually hit that number the Elantra may need to be coaxed a bit to get to the magic number. Just a personal opinion Dan, which would you spend your money on? Cruze Eco or Elantra?
@josh1303 140hp should get you along fine. You only have trouble merging when hp is under 125.125-250 hp is good highway power depending on car weight. 250hp+ is easy as cake. But the hyundai should get along fine if your the only driver. It's pretty light, and 140 is a adverage compact car hp.
never did liked hyundai but gotta admit, its pretty solid.
With this all you'll tear up is the engine, instead of the twisties.
Soooo sad. My friend has one and hasn't hit 40 mpg yet. I'd much rather have the Fit after watching your review. 45mpg with a light foot?!? Oh yeah.
Hey Dan, what would you recommend better, the new elantra or the new accent. In terms of fun to drive factors and overall?
Thank you
I'd really love to see a 0-60 of the manual trans. elantra.
The automatic has a good first 2 gears though..
36 mpg thats DOUBLE what i get in my Jimmy :)
@sssmeee In any 4cyl you can get 40+mpg it depends how you drive it!
how tall are you? saw another video where he had plenty of headroom in the back, but i'm guessing he must have been short.
@talldude123 In that case I'd say the Accent and Fiesta are neck in neck for refinement in their class.
How is the passing power for hwy in this car? Also merging etc?
@yellowcow13 the focus is definitely faster...i don't know much anything else tho
Any chance you could review the Elantra GT?
@SeadGBosnia um dude go to the 9th gen forum, in real life people are scoring Over 40mpg
I don't think the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic will get much attention as they're solely relying on brand name.
5' 10" the last time I remember being measured.
I want one
Hahahaha, then theres the shitty Corolla with 34 highway mpg because of its 80's 4 speed shitter. lol
@SeadGBosnia The new CIvic 1.8 is NOT faster in acceleration and the New Corolla LE and New Civic EX L you lose 6 MPG HWY! That's quite a bit. The Elantra with a 10 year Warranty is the Best Value and a lot cheaper to boot!
its like a mini sonata
@carguy379 And Honda Civic too...
@marcomariaz26 The 09 was still a bargain bin car buddy. Bland styling, low tech, average drive, ect.... You need to realize you are not driving a current gen Hyundai but a last gen model that not many bought for obvious reasons. Current Hyundais are on part with if not above the Japanese and Domestics in many categories.
@marcomariaz26 People can say that about any car, what you see doesn't change sales figures. Compared to what the Japanese were doing at the time the Sonata was not in the same ball park technologically. It was a nice attempt but failed overall, but Hyundai's story has been a work in progress these last ten years and every new release has been better than the last. Again you are driving a last gen Hyundai, so your opinion of the company overall doesn't matter.
i hate the front end styling on the car
@marcomariaz26 Powers beyond your control buddy powers beyond your control, but all joking aside you are watching a review on a car that is such a significant gap from yours in terms of the types of cars the company builds now, and talking trash about it because your nearly 4 years old car wasn't that great. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Are we to judge the Chevy Cruze and Ford Focus like that? So yes your opinion about Hyundai doesn't matter when you haven't had a new gen.
@gene978 What the hell?..... lol Civic is a more fun of a drive than a Hyundai, better engine response ( I own a civic ) Yea the Hyundai looks better on paper but like the guy said ( Marcomariaz26 ^) The car simply sucks! Go buy a Hyundai idc its a newbie in this segment and newbie's always have problems with their cars ( that's why they have a extended warranty )! Also the civic ex-l get 39mpg hwy and the HF gets 41mpg hwy which is better than the Elantra!
This car Sucks look at the slow/boring acceleration! Honda And Toyota is much better overall!
