I hope y'all are having a good holiday season. This will be the last video for the year, I didn't initially plan to make a video about this car but when my first car video did well I changed my mind. A lot of this video was simply filmed on my phone, so sorry in advance for the quality! Anyway, I'll see you in the new year :)
:)
How much for a replacement engine ? Can't you just replace the pistons or head gaskets or something?
@@georgesenda1952 lol
That small statue is called VINAYAGAR. it is one of our god, so I think this car maybe a Indian car!!
Have a happy new year bro
These car videos have been so much fun! I love the tech stuff but like how you’ve expanded to fixing other things too!

I wasnt expecting that a video about fixing cars in a tech channel will be that fun , keep it up
As an ex auto tech and continuing hobbyist, i love these car videos lol. I could watch people work on new/old/antiques all day long. You ever need any help or tips let me know. Been working on cars for 20+ years.
I have to ask, why ex?
@@faridwakim they probably mean they don’t work as an auto tech anymore
Sir I need some advice
Can you help ??

@@devinchaboyer yup exactly. Had a nasty motorcycle crash and lost my job. I work on my own car but since it's street parking bit difficult
As someone with a 2012 Elantra with the 1.8 that has the exact issue, its nice to finally see someone do a long form video on piston slap and what they have done to try and mitigate it. I also went the extra step of installing a magnetic drain plug to further help. Love the video!
Love the car content! I have a 2013 Elantra and it had this ticking basically from new. By the time they did a recall we were out of warranty. I’ve continued driving it and it just hit 170,000 miles. I’m surprised it’s made it this far😂
Hope this unit will also have a long life and the buyer doesn't feel scammed!
Ideally, the car company should cover cars with the issue even after warranty. I have an 05 Volvo S60 which just had a free airbag replacement yesterday due to a recall. This seems like the way these situations should be managed.
Mine just hit 178,000 and it’s still running. Hard starts but I think it’s just the fuel pump. I only drive it on weekends cause I have a company vehicle but I beat the absolute shit out of it when I drive. 150,000+ miles on it in 9 years. Can’t believe it made it this far.
@@Crs664 mine just hit 178k a week ago! Still going strong. The only thing I've noticed is it has to be driven frequently. Otherwise it will misfire on startup. Still reliable and efficient as ever!
@@GWagon63 the hard start seems to go away for a week after an oil change but persists. All sources I’ve read point to the fuel pump assembly. When I replace it I will report back my findings!
HUGE dankpods energy from your channel and i love it. yanno, making content about normal everyday stuff that we all take for granted or forget about. it's a normal everyday car, but it still has character and an individual story. you rescued it and gave its existence new meaning and i think that's beautiful. keep filming on your phone and keep doing car videos. amazing video
Watching your videos feels like I'm spending time with an old friend with whom I have a deep and meaningful connection with. You've already got me hooked with your car and technology videos, just slap some audio, music and photography videos in there and that's me done! Love from Sydney!
I love how you revive these cars as well and thorough as you do every computer!
I had an '07 Elantra and saw an exact copy of mine roll several times. The tow truck driver pushed it over onto the wheels and drove it onto the tow truck. Mine also had the knock too but it seemed to go away eventually.
Elantra's are pretty good if you know how to maintain cars. The problem is that most people who buy these cars, usually neglects them by not changing the oil, and transmission fluids when they need to be changed. My neighbor maintains his 2012 Elantra, and he now has almost 220,000 trouble free miles on the original engine and transmission. Not bad! He originally paid $6,000 for the car in 2016, with around 50k miles on it. He does a lot of highway and city driving, he is a traveling business man.
I have an 05 Sonata with 300,000k on it. Not a check engine in sight. Tiny bits of rust are starting to come through, I'll get to them in the spring.
I received a traveling buisness man's 2012 elantra at 200,000 miles and and it still runs fine lmao
I have a 2015 Elantra with this engine. Bought new from dealer who was offering lifetime free oil changes at time of purchase. I have the dealer change the oil and filter every 6 months. I drive softly to conserve fuel so I’m not hard driving on the engine. If you own this vehicle, spend the extra money on good quality all season touring tires for better handling and a quieter ride.
I daily a 2013 Elantra- got it at 112k Miles. At around 120k I had to replace the original alternator, and a few months ago the spark plugs got changed. I change the oil regularly and it runs like butter, only recently with sound amplifications from an exhaust issue.
Fair enough car to run about in economically for cheap and it's happy to see someone understand that point. The engine is probably fine and won't blow up if you just change the oil regularly every 8,000km or so. Good to see you take care of it and move it on.
You do a great good job at making "boring" cars interesting. Love the car content.
I would put an UV protective layer (vinyl adhesive or transparent lacquer) on the headlights to keep them shiny.
Spark plugs would one have been one of things I would check when getting a used car, especially if it already has issues.
I saw one of those vans the other day on Immokalee Rd in Naples Florida! They were never sold in the US, although we had the "Toyota Van" from 84-89, and I LOVED those! Got a friend in Port Lincoln, a commercial fisherman. 👍
Owned a 2011 one of these for a couple years. My example didn't have any engine issues thankfully. I really liked it.
I have a 2012 Elantra with around 120k miles, I've put around 60k miles on it and I'm happy I dont have the piston slapping issue. Its been a great car for me so far with only minor maintenance required here and there.
Engine sounds worn out, probably from lack of oil changes. But hyundai does have a massive recall on the Theta engines. At our local Hyundai dealer there is no lie 47 cars waiting to get the engine replaced!
I've got a white 2015 with the manual, already gotten me through 2 snowstorms here, love it!
That statue on the dashboard was of Lord Ganesha. In India we do put a Ganesha idol on dash. May be the previous owner was from India.
I have a 2017 Elantra that is obviously newer than this car, but I did face the ignition coils dying. I maintain oil, trans fluid, and will flush coolant soon.
Love this little car.
Always liked the look of these. They don’t look or feel expensive, I just always found their design appealing and distinctive.
The design of these is pretty timeless imo. Compared to a 2013 Corolla or civic, these look way more modern
It's so amazing to me seeing those car restorations, it looks so fun... Sad that it probably won't happen here where I live where cars are so frickin expensive and anything you do you gotta pay...
currently driving 1.6 gdi 6 speed automatic 'Avante'. Thanks to harsh Korean weather, the car is equipped with heated steering and seats. It is really a lifesaver. My major fault was error code p0335 with crank position sensor fault at 145,000 km but was able to fix about KRW 100,000.. Recently the rear defroster stopped working but the technician said it was the wiring in the window itself was the problem and the only way to fix it was by replacing it. Since it was nothing major, I'm not going to fix that at the moment. Overall it is a very solid standard car for anyone.
These are underrated cars. Hyundai gets a bad name but so much of their issues are by owners not maintaining them. My family have owned 5 Kia/Hyundai products, myself and my partner owning a Sonata. No issues at all.
I drive a 2022 Elantra and I love it. There have been issues with engines burning oil in the past, but you’re right-most of the issues are due to negligence.
@@icecreamjunkie6790 I bought my son's 2016 Elantra from him after Hyundai replaced the engine. It has 8,000 miles on the new engine. It could just be pessimism, but the engine seems to be ticking already. I changed oil before the recommended interval, but now regretting following the advised interval. I wanted to believe a new engine from Hyundai would give me peace of mind, but don't think I want to roll the dice for much longer.
Agreed, I have a 2015 Accent with 166k miles on it. Only issue I ever had was a purge valve replacement and basic maintenance and fluid changes. Great little car! Hyundai definitely gets a bad rep.
I own a 2016 Elantra with 2L engine that I bought in early 2017 as near new with only 4760km in odometer. It has been absolute charm to drive with no issues whatsoever. Went to Perisher during snow with snow chains fitted, went to various beaches with inflated tires and what not. Now it has 78,000km and is the secondary car supplementing a used Model 3 we got earlier this year. My wife is buying an SUV, so we might be selling it, but it's an under rated compact sedan.
My cousin has a 2014 elantra. Only thing that went bad was the AC, that was after 7 years of usage. Its a nice car to drive and cheap to maintain
You'll need A LOT of eucalyptus oil to clean this bugger
I'm loving these car videos!! Can you make more detailing videos, of cars, laptops, mobiles, PCs, appliances, etc.? Would love to watch such videos, knowing that YOU'VE made them.
I have a 2016 Elantra and love it. 79000 troublefree miles and I get 43mpgs per tank since I bought it in 2019. Car looks like new inside and out. I use Mequire's Quick Detailer on my black metallic paint. Love how it sparkles and the depth of the shine. Love the 6 speed manual transmission.
My niece had one of these and the knock got very bad and started burning a lot of oil. I pulled the head off and I found every single cylinder had vertical scratches and was heavily damaged. To help her out I pulled the engine out, had the cylinders bored, I installed new larger pistons and did a full engine rebuild. The car incredibly smooth now and she drove it for a few years before getting some electrical problems. I'm looking into these this weekend.
That Elantra was nice looking back in the day! My neighbor has one too. I have driven it a few times. It’s fine.
Don't stop the car vids, you made me fall in love with that Elantra.
I love this! Psivewri making a balance between technology and cars, is cool! Especially cars with technology inside of them.
My grandma's 2012 hyundai elantra has has a slight tap(quieter than yours) it's entire life since brand new, it's never gotten worse and I've had it to redline a few times.
i enjoy these car related videos. keep it up!
Loving the car content!
Im really surprised you didn't just go ahead and check/replace the plugs when you first bought the car. That is always one of the first things I do when I buy another car. Used of course... I never buy brand new as it is nothing but loss once you drive it off the lot. And I absolutely hate having a car payment. But thanks for the video sir
Don't forget to add Blinker Fluid, it's like RGB for PCs, it adds 10 to 15% more horse power
Is this for reals ?
Have a 2012 I got in 2020 for work . Simple car to maintain. It’s very popular as I see many on the road.
I have a 2012 Elantra and all 4 of my coils went bad back in Oct. We changed them out and it seems to be running smooth now.
Well done mate you r very good at fixing things can’t wait for your next video. Glad the car works again. 🎉
My bm has the 2013 version and that thing rides like it’s on rails🔥
My sister in law had a 2014 Hyundai Elantra in black here in the US, and yep the same piston knock/slap after 4 years as her daily, so instead of trying to put a new engine in it, my brother dumped it for a new 2019 Toyota Camry, and they have had no issues since beyond normal maintenance. It really is hard to beat a Toyota, or Honda if you want a dirt simple reliable basic car.
Or a ford. Generally if you want a long lasting ICE car get a naturally aspirated engine. Also, do your research on the vehicle before buying. If you are buying a used vehicle that’s older than 5 years old check the fluids of possible. It will tell you the health and how well the car has been cared for.

As someone who lives through some REALLY nasty winters, that car looks super clean/mint. What you consider "really dirty" made me lol
I love my White 2015 Elantra Limited. Tan leather. It is a smooth driving car and still looks good.
Remembers me a lot about my old Peugeot 206+ I had until half a year ago. It 3rd cylinder had a crack which cause it to suck a bit coolant into the cylinder and trying to combust it with the gasoline. So I had the choice to replace the whole engine, fix the cylinder with welding and smoothing everything out or just put some anti-leak into the cooling system which effectively fixxed the leaking cylinder and was ready to go :)
the antileak will only last a certain amount of time though. Its like putting egg and pepper in the radiator. It may stop the leak for a bit but eventually it will come back
@@gamingjoshy6530 I know... I had to replace that regularly but so far it was cheaper than a new engine ^^
@@ThePrinzKassad yeah exactly
Man your killing it with the car vids! i love them sooooo much!!! I own a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and its as clean as yours! Execpt mine has the 2.0 from 2001 to 2010! Hyundai/Kia Dubbed this as their most reliable engine! MInes has low miles (115k) and my friends that has the same engine has about 280k! Also another one of my friends that has a 2011 the engine shot out a piston, those engines from 2011-2016 arent reliable at all, ANYWAYS YOUR AMAZING! BEEN SUBBED FOR A YEAR AND LOVEE ALL VIDS MAN !!!
Hyundai is the best equation price-quality of the entire market. I never drove one Elantra but the i10 and i20 are excelent machines that last long. The i20 above 90HP manual system is probably the best machine if you want a fast machine. It remembers me the old days of BMW2002 ...
Love these car videos
Also had ignition coil fail on mine, didn't make too much noise like yours though and I didn't even notice till I was driving. I noticed it was just jerking around especially when at a stop light and it'd go away a little with accerleration. I also get a little bit of that piston slap but just in the morning when it warms up, once it's warm it seems to run great
I've had mine for at least six years bought it at an auction for $6,000. still going strong noticed the ticking about a year ago. I do the maintenance on it, use thicker oil, the noise is not loud and fades away after a while. changed the clock spring once and put in a modern radio. luckily the local council damaged my paint work and compensated me for a new paint job.
I like this car series. Keep doing more car videos.
This 2014 Elantra are reliable and good I actually modified mines and been running nice and fast , really like how you show every detail about the car !🔥
what mods did you do?

I am a really big fan of these car videos. Your channel has consistently been my favorite to watch here and I look forward to what you've got in store for the future!
What a legend for remove the plate frames of the plate.
Wasn't expecting to see a Lord Ganesha statue in an Australian car 😅
Shine your tires and use all-purpose wheel shine as well, I use the combo on every car, But do wash the tires first before applying the shine or shine gel to have a nice clean surface to stick to. it will prevent dry-rotting over time as long as you use it regularly such as every week as needed or every other week as needed.
I got a 2013 with 280000 km on it. Runs like new, had it for 3 years driving it in Canada and she's keep me warm as well.
With my previous car I had engine issues eventually, and replacement coil packs solved one issue for a few days / weeks and then problem returned (car suddenly cutting power to walking speed and then restoring it violently to 30mph etc while driving). Also air bag light was alway coming on, and I had considered doing the dodgy 555 timer mod to make the light go on and then off at ignition time, so it would get through an MOT etc. I never did that as the engine issue got so bad, I had to abandon the car and buy a replacement of the same model.
Chris fix 2.0 maybe? Letsgooo
I had one of these cars as a loan car while my Hyundai i45 (Sonata) was being serviced. It was fine to drive but ride quality was a bit harsher than the i45, which I would recommend over this.
Thank you for sharing this! Im definitely doing all my elantra 23 sel work myself!
I had a 1996 elantra... And it sounded like yours most of the time lol. Made it to about 250,000 miles. Was a 5spd manual with the 1.8L
I have been the original owner of a 2013 Elantra. Most owners don’t know you need FULL synthetic oil changes AND annual fuel induction service to prevent piston slap. No problems yet with mine. 😅
Growing up watching your tech videos, then I started to love cars, I love how your branching out and doing theses car videos I love them, keep up the good work
Awesome reviews. Those engines are far superior then the older 2.0 138HP of the previous gen Elantra, Tiburon, Tucson... but personally, I like the old one better. Because it's unkillable. Tho... love those fuel consumption numbers.
Need an Adelaide colab with psivewri and dankpods, go on a car fixing expedition then talk tech
Man I'm loving this channel, glad I found it! Cheers from Florida
I am a fellow 13 Elantra/i30 owner and my experience with the airbag warning light is a common problem with the airbag clock springs. When they start to fail you get an airbag light and your steering wheel controls go out so the fix is to replace the clock spring
I love this Tech/Car UA-camr hybrid you're doing
Haven't even stayed yet but I know it's gonna be good!, Loving these new styles of videos!
At first I thought the problem was that the steering wheel is on the wrong side, but apparently it did not bother you much. About the noise from the engine: I couldn't walk away without mentioning that you did not use any eucalyptus oil on it. I think this is the root of the issues.
That’s just because he lives in Australia
@@damian9303 Reeeeeeeeealllllyyy? Eucalyptus too. What a shocking coincidence...
@@zevilaga Yeah, sorta thought that’d be the obvious answer for the steering wheel’s placement :p
I just fixed the exact same problem on my 2013 Elantra. I had 136,000 miles on the factory plugs and that's most likely what fried the cylinder three ignition coil.
Amazing that in 2022 we can get such good quality content for free. Awesome videos mate I'm into tech aswell but these car vids are awesome.
I drive a Kia Forte with a couple year newer, turbo'd version of this engine, and I can confirm they all have those diesel like loud lifters with that clacking in the front
More cheap and cheerful cars! Excellent work! Thanks for sharing!
I wasn't so lucky with my 2009 Skoda Octavia RS (or vRS in some countries). Bought it on the 30th of November and on the 25th of December (just after I came home from visiting my dad and grandma), the engine started to make a horrible rattling noise, then stopped. Fortunately it happened at my front gate. The dealer I bought it from will send a trailer for it on Monday, and they may fix it in warranty.
Really enjoyed this video.Well put together! And I really like this car!!
U should try to find an old proton to fix up they are usually cheap and rare little cars but great when brought back to life
I got suprised to see lord Ganesha on the dashboard of the car all the way from India to Australia ....... that was something I was not expecting at all
Hyundai Elantras are awesome! I owned a Hyundai Sonata Levant from 1995-2003 by the way.
I bought a 2013 Elantra new and it had the same issue with the engine at 30k miles. I got it replaced at a dealer here in the US for free. Unfortunately, it was totaled a few months later. Almost the same color as this one (little bit darker).
Sorry for that, how did the accident happen? jus curious lmfao
must have been an outlier. my friend has the exact same model and just did some modifications on the paint and hood but is still running greatly after 200k miles. With this video and the models you see now, you can see the stark differences and the meteroric improvement Hyundai has come to do. Their cars are some of the best now.
Time for a K swap. K20s are lovely this time of year
I love how my favourite tech UA-camr also become a car guy
Loving the content
I have a 2003 hyndai Elantra and all I do it change the oil every 3000 miles and I got 259000 on it right now. I got with 150000 on it. It’s a very cheap to maintain and reliable car. Very easy to work on too. Even if you take it to a shop. The most expensive repair I did was the timing belt. And it still cost less then $500 dollars too replace. Besides oil changes I only take to the shop like 2 or 3 times a year for little stuff like belt replacements and alignments maybe a part or 2.
Yes love the car content I had thought I blew my motor or didn’t tune it right turns out it was 4 failed ignition coils would never hit boost spent $400 USD on oem Saab coils and ngk spark plugs and it runs super smooth for a 2007 with 146k miles
Recommend using Castrol GTX magnatec oil with an OEM Hyundai oil filter (improves flow) greatly reduces the piston slap!
My car has that same ticking noise, did an oil analysis, said it was still a good engine.
My car for the last 5 years has been a 2006 Hyundai Elantra. It was listed online incorrectly as an automatic transmission when it’s really a manual. I think that’s why it had been on the used lot for about a year before I got it and the price was so low.
It only had 70,000 miles on it when I purchased it in 2017 for about $4,000 when you factor in the taxes.
Today it still has a clean title and has about 123,000 miles and has been an excellent car. I’ve had to replace a few things like the timing belt, spark plugs, stereo, radiator, clutch, battery and tires. It never looked pretty and I’ve done little to make it look nice over the years. My thought is that if someone is eventually going to purchase my car, the person shouldn’t expect it to be in fabulous shape given that it’s over 15 years old. It has always been fun to drive for a cheap car too and gets about 30 mpg. It’s also nice to have an old beater car where you don’t need to stress about it not looking perfect.
With some rough math it has cost me about $229 a month to drive. Or 26.3 cents a mile to own the car. I call that a terrific deal given that the most economic new vehicles nowadays cost around 50 cents per mile driven. (I’m talking about cost for everything. Not just the cost for fuel)
After looking over the numbers it’s shocking how the fuel has been by far the most expensive part of owning the car. And my car is not exactly a gas guzzler. Just goes to show how important mpg are for the overall value of a car. If if got 50mpg or 15mpg the cost per mile would be significantly different compared to all of the combined maintenance costs.
I don't want to be "that guy" but just wanted to mention that running oil as thick as possible along with oil stabiliser isn't a good thing. I'm currently rebuilding a polo 1.4 engine because someone did a similar thing. The oil couldn't lubricate everything well especially on cold starts because it was too thick. Ended up spinning main bearings.
I'd say run a slightly heavier 10w -40or same weight if you must and the ceratec you're using.
Pass on the stabiliser it just adds More viscosity.
Good job overall mate , looks clean 👍
I just got a 2015 elantra yesterday and was debating on watching this video, now i’m nervous 😭
the airbag logo mostly means u need to change the clock spring, it is under the steering wheel.
im having the same issue. Kia Forte 2013. i guess since Kia and Hyundai shares the platform then this is common amongst them
I have a 2020 elantra luxury edition. Great car, but has the 2.0L non turbo.
Im in Canada. My father has a 2013 elantra... His engine blew at 88,000km.
He now has a 2020 like mine. Completely
Diff car than his old 1
it sounds like a lifter. lifters were common to go on the hyundai excels as well. Thats why doing an oil change will keep it quiet for a bit
i am surprised, never on my life i've seen or i will ever see as a matter of fact the late 90's extended cabin toyota hiace, where im from you can only see the regular one and the newer models but that specific model never arrived*
I’ve read about this engines problem and Hyundai/ Kia’s service way too many times on Reddit to consider one of their brands cars still.
