    With a strong combination of value, technology, and sleek looks, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra sure is a strong player on paper against stalwart players like the redesigned Honda Civic. Only it's rather noisy engine and lack of power may send you checking out its more powerful competitors.

    I have the 2017 Hyundai Elantra SE. and I’m in love with it. I don’t really care if it’s “base model” or not. It’s a very zippy car and it’s great on gas. If you do nothing but floor it as you do in every damn video you do then yeah you're going to hear it. Try doing a review driving the vehicles like a normal person. I always learn a lot in your vids and count myself on the enthusiast side so appreciate your specific point of view. As for this segment, these "small" cars have grown so much and are priced much higher and closer to some of the mid-sized ones, I'd have a tough time passing on an Mazda 6 touring with manual over a little more tech-laden, smaller car just to save a few mpgs.

    I own a 2017 Elantra, value edition, and I used to sell Honda's for 4 and a half years and I have to say the Hyundai brand is really coming up in the automotive world. Yes while Honda does have some better features, Honda has always been known for more performance and interior looks. Sadly now a days the cars are looking more and more...well let's just say they don't look Good to me (other than the civic hatch) Hyundai gives out a lot of technology for the price but does lack on the excitement aspect. But dollar for dollar the Hyundai is catching up to Honda's and Toyota's very quickly and I wouldn't be surprised to see Hyundai one day running with the big dogs.

    I have a 2013. I'm glad they moved the blower vents higher. It does defrost the front window very fast and the road noise is louder than my 2003 Elantra. Other than that no complaints

    I've been driving this car for the past two weeks and just completed a 6 hr road trip and I have to say you didn't give it enough credit. It's actually pretty fast, the 60 to 90 acceleration is really good, the take off is slightly slow but no problem when changing lanes or from a roll. I think you have a poor driving style as well because I have a lead foot and still got 36-38city and 39-42highway. It actually got the best gas mileage at around 80mph. Also I quickly switch driving modes when I need to avoid a box or stick situation and it had no problem sling shooting to 95mph when I needed to pass an asshat who stayed in the fast lane and decides to speed up when I had to pass. Overall this vehicle has a 26-30k feel for only 17-19k, that's really impressive.

    I think Honda Civic wins in terms of safety technology and features. You have to buy the Limited Elantra in order to get the adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and Automatic Breaking. These safety features are available in all civic trims including the based LX. If you care about these safety features, you should consider the Civic. It is a pitty that such important safety features are not available in the lower trim Elantra

    • @theredline
      @theredline  8 років тому +5

      You are correct with that, we like the fact that Honda offers those safety features on lower trims, but the Elantra also has some features that are unavailable on the new Civic, such as the memory seats, adaptive swiveling headlights, and the smart-access trunk opener. At the same time, Honda offers full-LED headlights, more power, and a sportier driving feel. It really comes down to what you prefer most, there is not right or wrong answer.

    I don't think it's the case anymore, but let's assume the new Civic is a more dependable car long-term, I still wouldn't want it. Why? It's hideous looking. The interior looks downright cheap compared to the Elantra interior. The overall "personality" of the Civic is very boy ricer, look at me I'm 16. Not my cup of tea. I like the sleek, sophisticated style of the Elantra, inside and out. The warranty is much better too. Not saying the Civic is a bad car, but it looks like it's trying WAY too hard to impress and falls flat on it's face for the average adult looking for a small midsize sedan.

      palebeachbum You totally hit the nail on the head. The lady that live across the street from me “she must work for Honda” is always coming home with new Honda’s and I just think there gaudy, cheap, and just flat out ugly looking. My mother has a 2015 Accord sport 6speed with 25k mi. and the starter went out already amongst other things. I have a 2015 Sonata with 34k mi. and I have never had a single issue with it, it’s more quiet, it rides better, it’s just flat out a much nicer car than the Accord. I used to have a 2011 Elantra with 165k mi. and it’s still ran like new, shifted like a dream and had freezing cold air conditioning, I only had to put a fuel pump and an alternator in it. We have 4 Hyundai’s and a Kia in the family and we all love them and have never had any serious problems with them, 2 of my other neighbors also have Hyundai’s and they all say the same thing.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum 5 років тому +1

      @@Anonymous-ji4sb once upon a time, Honda reliability and quality was light years ahead of Hyundai. Times have changed. Over the last 25 yrs or so, Honda quality has been on a slow decline and major problems are becoming more evident, while Hyundai quality and reliability has been on a very steep rise. While doing my online research before buying a new car in Dec 2018, I read consumer complaints about problems with both the Civic's 2.0L and 1.5L turbo engines. That surprised me. Then I thought back to everyone I've know to own a Honda made in the last 15 yrs. All having rather major mechanical problems outside their 36k mile warranty, but well before 100k miles. It confirms my suspicions about declining Honda quality. Hyundai has come a long way in that time. Buying a car from Honda does not guarantee a stellar car, but you're guaranteed a much shorter warranty and a higher price tag at purchase. I opted to buy a new 2018 Elantra. My first Hyundai vehicle. So far, I'm very impressed with the quality. I didn't bother testing out the Civic. Can't stomach the look.

      palebeachbum The 2011 Elantra was my first car, I got it brand new a week after I graduated college. I had for about 7.5 years and 165k mi. with very little problems, but sadly a year ago I was rear-ended and Geico Insurance declared it a total loss due to high mileage. I actually got a 2018 Elantra SEL for the rental. I had it for almost a month, it was very quiet, it had a really nice ride, it had decent pick-up, and it had pretty much the same touchscreen the in this video has. I think that would be an excellent first car and I highly recommend one to anybody. I almost got a new Elantra but I needed more space so I got the used 2015 Sonata instead.

    I have a 2015 Jetta 1.8T. My previous car was a 2006 Mazda 3 5 door with the 2.3 engine. My Mazda is much more refined and more solid of a car. My big complaint with my Jetta is that the whole interior is hard plastic everywhere and the drivers seat is not as supportive or as well bolstered as my Mazda. I should have bought another Mazda even though it rusted pretty bad around year seven or eight which really depressed me. I have never owned a car that rusted like that around the wheel wells and the bottom of the doors The current models are more aerodynamic and back seat room has decreased to the point of being only for kids or shorter people. My Jetta has a 12yr/120000 mile rust proof warranty, where Mazda has I think 3/36 on everything now. My 2006 came with a 4/50 warranty which was a bit better than everyone else. I want to take the Elantra Sprot for a ride with that 200hp turbo motor. I want that zoom zoom that Mazda provides back in my driving life. I miss my Mazda more than my last girlfriend. Sorry baby.

    While I do like some of the updated features of the 2017 redesign, I like the styling and looks of my 2013 Elantra Coupe much better, and the updated features and more lackluster looks are not enticing me to upgrade. The gen5 Elantra was a much better looking car, has all the features I want/need, and in my opinion is very comfortable to drive even on long trips. Sure it can be "skittish" in corners, but I don't try to drive it like a race car. If I wanted sports car performance, I would have bought a sports car! I'll stick with my 2013 coupe. When it is time to upgrade (probably not till around 2020-2023, if not longer), chances are it will be another Hyundai. Besides, who can beat Hyundai's class leading 10yr warranty!

    I have a 2012 Elantra Limited, so far not one single problem, I agree not the sportiest to drive in the world but way better than the civic or Mazda 3 of 2012, this latest Elantra, my parents have a 2017 Elantra Limited and it is so much better than Civic, drove the new Civic and the Civic SI they feel cheap to me and something just doesn't feel right about the car. As far as the Mazda 3 my wife had a 2017 Grand Touring up until a month ago, traded for a fully loaded Kia Niro, which so far it a better car. It was not the greatest car which is why we don't have it anymore. It handled good on twisty roads and had a fair amount of power but ride quality was really poor. You felt every bump, way to sporty for the power it had. Steering was also to stiff for around town driving, they should have made different drive modes, the most annoying thing of the Mazda was, they don't use a Variable displacement A/C compressor, which you can feel it cycling at idle and when driving, even the Civic went to a modern Compressor. I am not giving this review as someone who doesn't like performance cars. The Elantra was my first Automatic and I still have a Jetta Turbo Manual Transmission as my second car and have had many sports cars. I am just saying the Elantra is a better car than the Mazda or Civic. If you want sportier look to the Elantra Sport or the Audi A3 or even the new 2019 Jetta which I have not drove yet, hope to do that soon.

    I believe the engine in this car is an Atkinson Cycle design, which is far from ordinary for a non-hybrid design. The Mazda 3 never gets the advertised MPG in test reviews I have seen, but the new Elantra hits the EPA marks or better. It certainly does as well as the Corolla LE. I think it looks way better than the Honda or Mazda 3. I heard a sport model is coming with an independent rear suspension and better brakes.
