  • Madame Rachel - Beautiful Forever
    Chronicle of the Times Episode 53 | 1806 - 1880
Were Madame Rachel to turn up in our day, she would undoubtedly be a tremendous success! This story absolutely captured Victorian news stories of the day as the masses watched the now exposed lives of the rich and priveleged.
Madame Rachel preyed specifically on wealthy women desperate to keep their looks and possibly naively believing they were still the beauty they once had been.
In Victorian times, "enhancement" (makeup) was only used by those in the theatrics or prostitutes A look of natural beauty - a blessing only a few were born with - was what every woman strived for.
A favourite story of our team which has been waiting in the wings for awhile.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

Such a complex con, Madame Rachel not only sold snake oil but deceived, blackmailed and intimidated on all she'd meet?? I remember our Nan once saying how her sisters used crushed-up red clay bricks as rouge and had to scrub their faces clean before returning home. Glad you came up as recommend, it was a great telling. Liked & Subbed

It was Queen Elizabeth the 1st, and they did not really know the dangers of it back in the 1500's. It was something called “Venetian Ceruse” (or “the spirits of Saturn”). It was classified as a poison 31 years after Elizabeth's death.

Yes, poor queen liz. She had become scarred from her bout of small pox. The heavy makeup was to hide the scars.😔

Madame Rachel sounds like she was an unscrupulous wheeeler-dealer!! Phil Mitchell could learn a thing or three from her!!
Rachel seemed to be quite an intelligent woman!! It's a pity she didn't use her brains for good!!
Thanks for telling this fake Madame's VERY INTERESTING story, Robin!! 💞👍❤💕👏😍🤗

@@ChronicleofTheTimes2024 By the way, I love how you tell the stories and don't just give a VERY brief summary!! I also enjoy hearing the details of each case, what was said by whom in court etc etc!! How you tell the stories almost makes the people you're telling us about come alive again!! I always feel I'm actually present in the story when you narrate it!! 👍❤🤗😍👏💕💞

You should summarize this case rather than attempting to read it Word for Word

Thank you for the feedback! 🙏ummm, we actually do summarise cases in between news articles. This story was long as it involved a time span of over 20 years and two court cases. It is a tricky line between giving a complete picture of a case and a shortened incomplete version. We tend to go with the complete versions (without reading out trial transcripst which OMG is long long long long). However, we do appreciate that for some people, they may prefer the shortened version! We did give shorts a try, as well as much shortened versions of stories, but our feedback was overwhelmingly : we want the longer epsiodes. So, that is what we do,. ww appreciate that this is not to the taste of all. Thank you agan for your feedback.

Pay no attention to the above comment , most of us realize that you are reading from the various news accounts of the times and add a bit of your own narrative , when necessary , to aid in the explanation . In my opinion the critics don't understand your process and are free to tune out . Keep up the good work and thank you for your efforts . ❤
