The best thing about the Kenobi/Maul final confrontation is that OBI WAN was the one to use deception.
When he takes Qui Gons stance, to a seasoned warrior like Maul, it indicated that Maul hit the nail on the head with his deductive reasoning. Obi Wan was quasi infamous for his mastery of form 3 Soresu, literally the defensive form. Qui Gons' specialty was that of master Yodas, form 4 Ataru. It's a much more aggressive and agility based combat form.
So Obi Wan tricked Maul into thinking he was blinded to his usual defense strategy in favor of defending Luke. So Maul fucking flies in face first and Obi Wan takes a single step back repels the two weak blows and cuts him down.
A Master of the Light beating a Sith with deception. *chefs kiss*

Thus, Thrawn trusts his Master, Emperor Palpatine, whom Thrawn respects as the most powerful being in the galaxy, to handle everything that relates to the Force, while Thrawn handles more mundane affairs. As Vader would tell Thrawn in one of the canon novels: *_"All the strength of the creature you faced on Atollon pales in comparison to the power of the Emperor."_*

Thrawn is from the unknown regions. He has seen and battled horrors that make the Empire look like the good guys. He joins the Empire to make it stronger so that the galaxy can have at least SOME hope of surviving what is coming to them.
Thrawn is pragmatic. While he doesn't like the bad parts of the Empire, he recognizes that he needs the empire's strength to defeat a greater evil. In his mind Palpatine will not live forever, and when he dies Thrawn will be able to influence the next leader (or become it) to change the evils from within, rather than without.
The rebellion in his view is actually the greater threat, because if they weaken or defeat the empire they will ultimately doom the galaxy to a greater evil.

Well the thing about Thrawn is that he doesn't see him himself as superior being or is a power hungry maniac, he does things by a logical stand point he doesn't take things personal either (even if it seems like so) he even hates the 'Death Star' because its unethical but one thing is for sure, he is simply on the wrong side

    • @GodlessScummer
      @GodlessScummer Рік тому +3

I think ethical concerns were on reason for Thrawn's opposition to the Death Star but remember his main objections were for tactical reasons.
He saw the Death Star as a huge waste of resources for a weapon that could only be brought to bare on one planet at a time.
Thrawn argued that the resources spent on the Death Star would've been better used on the building fleet and projects like the TIE Defender.

From a certain point of view, we didn't lose anyone major, as in, this show highlights the crew of the Ghost. But as a Star Wars fan, and someone who identifies with the Rebels, this was a major defeat. The Rebels are a ragtag insurgence. We don't have a lot of ships or high level commanders. In this battle, we lost a hidden base, Commander Sato (who was the head of our Rebel Cell - Phoenix), lots of ships and lots of fighters. This was a huge loss for the Rebellion. RIP Jun Sato, Pheonix Commander.

In this two-parter, Thrawn just revealed two weaknesses: his dependence on inferior, self-interested officers and, despite his tremendous mind, an inability to comprehend the full potentials of force users. In mastering knowledge of others, he's failed to follow that old Greek maxim: "Know thyself".

A really subtle detail in this episode, Thrawn changes tactics after Sato’s sacrifice because holding the line and grinding the rebel fleet down will not work against Hera, now that she is in command. Commander Sato was an aggressive line officer who preferred action over maneuver, and had a habit of committing to a fight even when withdrawal would have been a better option. Remember how Sato acted against Darth Vader and how he jumped in to save his nephew at Mykopo. Hera, on the other hand, is a skilled pilot who learned tactics at the knee of her father, an accomplished geurrilla fighter. Captain Syndula would have pulled back and sought a way to escape, and with many of the larger capital ships gone stood a decent chance of getting critical personnel out of Thrawn’s trap, thus allowing the rebels to survive. Wounded, but very much capable of rebuilding. To prevent this Thrawn presses the attack to drive Hera to ground where her skill as a pilot has less or no bearing and the Empire’s numerical personnel superiority can come into play. We are seeing that Thrawn has been studying his opponents, as he states, and is adapting his plans to counter them specifically.

The fact that all the Bendu's power is nothing compared to the Emperor's power is insane to think about. XD

13:15 Recall Moff Tarkin’s meeting? Capture the Rebel officers/leaders alive to make an example of them which is why he stopped. At the same time, Thrawn specifically said “utter defeat”. He wants them to taste the bitterness of defeat so they know who they’re dealing with & recognize his efforts in doing so as a worthy opponent/adversary.
Weird in what sense? His tactics & strategy? He just has better experience & knowledge. Getting Grand Admiral rank takes a lot effort to have earned him that position. Another fact is that many in the Imperial ranks didn’t know there’s such a thing called “Grand Admiral”. There are 12 Grand Admirals if I recall correctly. He’s not like others who think so little & not get the bigger picture. Understanding what you’re enemies are capable of is key rather than underestimate them regardless how strong you think you are.
He also says “only results”. For example, in video games, there are players who care abt their high score & number amount of kills comparing to players who don’t really care abt those at all but to win the game with strategy. Most/Some of who got less or sufficient kills or high score did actually help win certain matches/battles because they knew what was important. However, there’s always risks to those like being far from the objective. Not all maps have the best terrain for better positions.

Knowing Thrawn, I guess he took every decision that eventually led him to be banished from Csilla in order to find a higher power that would have the possibility to get rid of the threat he wants to get rid of (and that's not the Rebellion since Csilla is in the Unknown Regions, on the other side of the galaxy and has practically NO knowledge of the Republic/Empire. There are bigger threats coming on the horizon and for for Thrawn, having a trong galactic power and a strong military is what is gonna stop that threat, contrary to his people who has very few milltary assets and psychorigid military doctrine by comparison, they are isolationists. Thrawn never does anything non thoroughly, he always thinks ahead. The only way to beat him is to bring something to he table that he couldn't foresee or calculate. The Bendu is a good example. Thrawn knows very little of the Force and doesn't understand it.

This is one of those episodes where the Y-7 rating really hurt the show. The minimum crew compliment of a Nebulon-B frigate is 306 personnel (the Rebels lost 3 of those ships). The crew of a Braha’tok gunship is 70 personnel (the Rebels lost 3 of those ships). The minimum crew of a CR-90 corvette is 46 (the Rebels lost 6 of those ships). They also lost a Hammerhead Corvette, all but 4 A-Wings, all but 2 Y-Wings, the Quasar-Fire Carrier (which most crew escaped from), and both of their GR-75 Medium -which were trying to evacuate the personnel from Chopper Base (including the crew that escaped from the carrier). The Rebels lost thousands of people and multiple irreplaceable pieces of equipment and fleet assets.
The Phoenix Cell and Massassi Group lost more than 90% of their strength in this battle. Thrawn decimated them (in the classic sense of the word), yet this is still chalked-up as a FAILURE for Thrawn (because his primary mission was to capture the Rebel leadership). If this is what happens when Thrawn fails, the Rebels can’t survive too many more of them.
All of these losses are why I feel that aiming the series at a younger audience hurt serious episodes like this. If this show followed the same rating as ‘The Clone Wars’, you would’ve felt those casualties a lot harder, and the ending would feel less inspiring, and more hopeless (considering what they just lost).

Thrawn is often considered one of the smartest characters and greatest tactical geniuses in all of Star Wars. Obviously this is a kids show, so you can't have the Rebels just be completely defeated, but I do appreciate that even though Thrawn didn't get the total victory he was aiming for, the Rebels by and large LOST this battle pretty definitively. They survived, sure, but that's just about all they can say.
On top of that, Thrawn did pretty much everything right. His failure to take out the Rebels were due to three reasons, all of which were completely beyond his control:
    1. He was ordered by Tarkin to take the Rebel leaders in alive to be made an example of, despite Thrawn's belief that crushing them while they had the chance was the best option. Because of this, he had to adjust his strategy and hold back somewhat to make sure the squad wasn't killed by accident. Hell, if it weren't for that, his orbital bombardment would have been the end of everybody in that base.
    2. Konstantine disobeying his orders. You could argue he should have kept Konstantine on a tighter leash given his general incompetence, but the fact is that if he had just obeyed Thrawn's commands, the Rebels would have had no way to get past their orbital defenses. They would have been completely trapped, and Ezra would have had no opening to break through and find backup.
    3. The Bendu. There was legitimately no way Thrawn could have possibly predicted that there was an ancient Force creature that chose to intervene at the exact moment he had the group completely surrounded. The Force is really Thrawn's only genuine blind spot when it comes to battle tactics.

Thrawn did indeed kill Bendu here, at least physically. However, just like with Obi-Wan and Yoda, Bendus Body just disappeared when he died, while his spirit lives on in the force. This makes Bendu essentially unbeatable, because despite lacking a flesh and blood body now, he lives on in the force forever.

Besides a few episodes in the beginning, this season is pretty much all the finale

Thrawn did kill Bendu. I think Bendu just poofed like Obi-Wan when Vader strikes him down in episode 4. But he was mortally wounded when he was shot out of the sky. He just chose to join the cosmic force before he was shot by Thrawn, a final F U as he passes on.
