I remember when the Obi-wan vs Maul episode first came out and a fair amount of people were upset about the fight, but I love the deeper meaning in every move and shift in their stance. And thematically, Obi-wan was able to defeat Maul with that bait (standing in Qui-gon's stance so that Maul will try to beat him the way he beat Qui-gon) because Maul is stuck in the past, obsessed with Kenobi; this kept him alive after Episode 1 but in this it is his downfall. And Obi-wan has plenty of reason to hate Maul back (he killed Qui-gon AND Satine), but at this moment in his life, he is the perfect Jedi ("look what I have risen above"): he does not hate Maul, and would have avoided killing him if he could, and only ignites his saber to end him when Maul figures out about Luke.
Also he believes Luke is the real Chosen one, which I always believed, despite what we see in clone wars and what Lucas himself has said. Either way, this confrontation is incredible!
It was in true samurai fashion. They trained to make the kill with as few moves as possible.
It my favorite fight in star wars
I remember yelling "COP OUT" at the screen after the short fight when it first aired. But then I read other's analyses of it and how it was more a battle of the mind, reminiscent of real samurai fights, and how Obi's stance changes reflected Qui-gon's last duel. It really changed my perspective and I fully respect Filoni for taking this route instead of a long drawn out fight.
Yup, all this! Couldn't have said it better. One of my favorite scenes in all of Star Wars.

You 100% should watch Sam Witwer (the voice of maul) explaining that final scene. He really breaks it down better then I could in this comment.
I know there were a lot of people disappointed with the final fight between Obiwan and Maul. I loved it!
The way Obi-Wan kills Maul is really subtle. He begins with his signature Soresu stance, but switches to Ataru stance in order to trick Maul into using the same move he used to kill Qui-Gon. Then, when he attacks, he
immediately switches back to Soresu, catching Maul off-guard.The shortness of the duel works so well in my opinion. There's no need to rehash an epic flashy duel that's already happened between them before. And Maul's death scene
solidified him as one of the best characters in Star Wars.
The fact Obi Wan held Maul in his arms during his final breaths, the man who murdered his master and the woman he loved, and watch not in anger or hate, but in sympathy and pity, says a lot about who Obi Wan is. Obi Wan was the idealization of what a Jedi should be. I think in this particular instance, that is WAY better than a long, drawn out fancy lightsaber fight.

I believe that the reason that Maul was defeated so quickly was to show how his vengeance and hatred of Kenobi wore on him over the years and to show how much wiser Obi Wan has become since ROTS.

Exactly. like others have pointed out he purposely baited Maul by taking Qui-Gon's Ataru stance and lured him into trying to finish him like he did Qui-Gon by hitting him in the face to stun him, if you watch closely you see Maul's 3 hits are exactly like the ones he used right before he finished Qui-Gon.
Eh I don't think so. Those emotions give dark side users more power.
What those emotions can do to a dark sider is blind them, which is what happens here when he falls for Obi-Wan's bait, Qui-Gons stance, and tries to kill him with the same move he killed Qui-Gon with. Masterful writing because it shows Maul's weaknesses, and Obi-Wan's wisdom.
Maul tries to use the same series of attacks he used on Qui-gon. (I'm pretty sure if you watch Phantom menace, Mauls movments on the killing blow line up with Rebels) Obi wan being older and more experienced now anticipates this switching his stance. I always took his as showing how far Obi wan has come since their 1st duel

Stephen Stanton does the voice of Obi Wan here, he also does Tarkin, and AP5. He has also done dozens more characters across animated Star Wars. He is truly a gem.
The guys at Blind Wave do a fantastic job at explaining why the Obi-wan vs Maul fight was incredible. The main points being that the fight is taking place as they are squaring up, watching each other's every subtle move and that it illustrates how Obi-wan has grown while Maul has never moved past The Phantom Menace.
9:55 another interesting note: that battle stance obiwan did is his teacher, qui gon jin stance. maul recognize that and he changed his stance since he knew its weakness. but as you saw obi wan who was there and saw how maul counter his teacher new how to counter back at maul.
That duel becomes like fine wine as more time goes by. It shows how much Obi Wan has progressed from Episode 1 to now, in seeing him go from his original lightsaber stance to a different form fitting of his age, and how Maul went to use the same strike he used to kill Qui Gon.
I really like that fight. Maul isn't the evil mastermind he thinks he is; he's Sysophos pushing the same rock up the same hill. He says the wrong thing and Kenobi decides it's time to stop him which is easy for him since he's the closest thing Maul has to a best friend. Maul was raised by the Emperor and wasn't taught to have friends. He only knows master and apprentice (and now brother a little). He's alone and lonely on Malachor when we find him and is sincerely looking for hope. Ezra tries to help him with redemption but Maul doesn't learn and has been in arrested development since the Phantom Menace.
I've been thinking a lot about Rebels lately, lol.
Honestly that show is so underrated. It's a show that's grown on me during the years too. I think I was like a lot of people, my first reaction to Rebels was kinda middling, I didn't hate it like some people, but I was like, "Meh, it's alright." I think looking back though, it was me just being sour that it wasn't Clone Wars. But just because it was different from Clone Wars didn't mean it was bad, in fact in some ways, it was better than Clone Wars (though Clone Wars was better in other ways too, they were both good, just different).
Especially after watching the first two episodes of Ahsoka, which is basically Rebels Season 5 if we're being honest lol, it made me look back and reflect on it, and honestly even the early episodes which I thought were mid, there's a lot of good stuff in there too. And the finale of the series is really powerful. Ahsoka has had an amazing arc as a character, but honestly Ezra also has an amazing arc. Especially comparing his first appearance to the end. He's just really so much more mature, and in command, and self sacrificing in the end that he's almost unrecognizable from him at the start. He really does feel like a full on Jedi in his last scene and it's amazing.
Oh and Sabine also had great character development, but I think the difference is that her development isn't done yet. Ezra kinda mostly completed his character growth arc by the end of Rebels while it's clear in Ahsoka that Sabine's story isn't finished yet.
The final Duel between Maul and Obiwan is absolute GOLD, Akira Kurosawa would totally approve. Also the poetic Justice of Maul dying in Obiwan's arms like 2 others who were important to him, Master Quigon Jinn and his beloved Satine of House Kryse both slain by Maul. THIS IS STAR WARS!
The pure silence after obi wan’s killing blow to maul was incredible. What a poetic and powerful end to this rivalry!

As many patreon comments has pointed out. It is the shortness of Maul vs Kenobi fight that makes it brilliant.
The stances, the changes, the attack by Maul that mimics Ep 1 and Obi-wan knows exactly how to defeat it.
If you really read into how Obi-wan defeated Maul in ep 1, and then Anakin attempts the same attack against kenobi in ep 3 which goes terrible for the attacker.
And now in Rebels, Maul again tries to do the exact move that killed Kenobi's master. He studies, he improves, he meditate about his fights so next time he does better.
The Kenobi vs Maul fight was short sure. But there was a ton that happened in that time, Obi-wan probed Maul with his stance changes and Baited him in the end with Qi-Qon's stance.....Maul had his eyes light up and went for the same move and got caught.....which is why it was short
Holden the reason it was so quick was cause obiwan went from his clone wars pose to his Ben kenobi pose to qui-gons pose so that made maul cocky and try to kill obiwan like he killed qui-gon by hitting him with the hilt and obiwan counter it was poetic in a way
If you want to understand the reasonings behind that Obi-vs-Maul - listen to Sam Whitwer explain it. (He was the voice actor for Maul). It's a very interesting take.
I saw an interview with Sam Witwer (voice of Darth Maul in Rebels) where he commented on the fighting stance Obi-wan used in that scene in Rebels. You see him start out in Alec Guiness's forward stance, then shifted to the younger Obi-wan's stance from the prequels, then finally shifted to Qui-Gon's stance used in his fight against Maul where he died, knowing Maul would attack the same way, allowing Obi-wan the finish the fight quickly.
The Maul fight is very poetic, although it can come across as disappointing if you don't pick up on why. I think there was plenty of "build up" throughout The Clone Wars and Rebels itself.
Obi-Wans line of "Look what I have risen above" plays into the fight perfectly. Maul is still stuck in his old ways, he's never really changed, still dead set on vengeance at any cost. Obi-Wan has grown older and wiser from his trauma and time in exile. He first enters into his own stance, then switches to Qui-Gon's stance, Maul sees this as an opportunity to kill Obi-Wan in the same way that he killed his master; little does Maul know that this is bait (because he's too single minded and arrogant). Obi-Wan knows exactly what Maul is going to try and do.
Doesn’t change the fact that they never should’ve killed him off. Why from a business perspective would you kill off one of the best character in Star Wars in a 5 second fight or at all? He’s money, he’s views & yet they killed him off like this? That’s disgusting & is just a foolish move

Characters well written when believed in by someone’s vision would change as well. Maul could’ve done so much more. “Milk”? Nah, him just existing isn’t milking him when he’s literally the best Star Wars character with a very few other exceptions.

The Obi-Wan vs. Maul final duel is by far my favorite lightsaber fight, and it's one of my favorite Episodes of Rebels. It doesn't need all the flash and bang, it has so much emotional buildup through Clone Wars and Rebels. Obi-Wan takes his Masters stance, Maul initiates the same move he used to kill Qui-Gon after seeing it, but Obi-Wan trapped him and easily counters the blow to the face-move by slicing vertically through Mauls Saber into his chest, dealing the killing blow. There is so much history between these two characters, and this is the most perfect culmination and climax to their story: Geniusly written dialogue, beautifully animated and brilliantly voice acted. If it were just another drawn out epic fight, it would've been just another lightsaber duel like we've seen millions of times, but THIS will stay in the viewers mind.
But don't get me wrong, i had the same exact reaction to it as you guys after my first viewing.
I remember when the "Twin Suns" episode first aired, the Star Wars UA-cam channel uploaded a video called "Maul: In Memoriam". Just one problem, the video went live before the episode had aired for most people (including me) causing his death to get spoiled.
I’ve only just started watching the video and I’m not sure if Holden avoids comments due to possible spoilers, but I just lost a good friend at far too young an age and seeing the notification for this video pop up really lifted my spirits. I love Star Wars and hope you both continue your journey into The Bad Batch. These are always great videos.

Pretty sure that the move Maul uses on Obi-wan is the same one he killed Qui-Gon with. Shows that Obi-wan has risen above his old master.
You definitely slept on that duel. first obi wan takes his original stance, and noticed maul took his normal counter.
But here's the brilliant part, Obi wan changed to qui gon's stance. Which made maul go into the same stance he fought qui gon with. OBI wan baited him into doing the same move again which he used to kill qui gon and was ready for it and that's why the fight was over so quick. It was a duel in their heads it was amazing.

JJ Abrams really saw the Kallus arc and thought "I'm gonna do exactly that with Hux, but way way way way worse, without any significant buildup, coming all of a sudden and without Kallus' compelling character arc"
Obi-Wan has probably spent 30 years coming up with a counter to Maul's attacks. He starts the fight in the beginning pose of Form 3, his specialty, but then moves into Form 4, his master's preferred style, all to bait Maul into using his chin stun strike. So cool, I love it. Plus Maul had been out in the desert for who knows how long, half deranged so, yeah, he stood no chance.
Maul tried to use the exact series of attacks he used against Qui-Gon, hence his downfall.
did you notice that he went through ALL the stances he has used - starting with his sabre low infront of him (like in the movie "a new hope") to rake the stance he used during the clone wars (arm stretched forward blade over his head to the stance he used when he first encountered maul - tricking maul into the samre attack pattern he used to kill qui Gon - but ObiWan was prepaired for it and instead of getting a hilt in face and get run through he slashed the the hilt.
It shows also that Kenobi has continued to grow and he was prepaired to let maul walk out of there - he didnt light his sabre until maul became a threat to Luke. Maul was stuck in his past and his need for revenge. And the sadness in his eyes when mauls last words is still "he will avenge us" (not usre if he talks about him and his brother or him and kenobi) - even in death maul is fixated on revenge.
I dont understand why people are disappointed in the fight between them - it beutifuly ends the charachter arc of maul and removes him from the scene in a meaningful way before the original trilogy - and it is totaly in line with both character involved in the fight. Obiwan has spent the last decade or so growing in understanding and in the force - maul has not grown anything for the last 25 years - he is still the same "brute" fighter he was at Naboo

7:48 interesting note: before disney bought star wars there was a anthology comic of what ifs. in one of them titled "old wounds" maul with the metallic legs found the farm luke lived in with his aunt and uncle. obiwan hiding under the stand was ready and fought him. in the end luke uncle killed maul using the blaster rifle he have.
that comic released i think a few years before the clone wars series was released. forgot the exact name of the book it was part of so if anyone knows mention name of it pls.
This is my favorite lightsaber fight, period. IT'S COMPLETE MINDGAMES. Which is awesome. Obi-Wan baits Maul and proves how he is above the ways in which people have lost to Maul previously. There is no rage, no fear. He detects Maul's obsession, plays into it, and strikes true. For Obi-Wan only the mission matters now. He is a fully realized Jedi Master. I love it.
The death of maul was absolutely perfect, every single movement and word means so much, obi wan switching stances because of all he's learned, and maul just getting more pissed off and impatient until finally maul tries the exact move he did on qui gon and loses immediately
There are a lot of reasons that the Maul/Obi Wan Duel was so short, but ultimately I have always felt that it was simply the case that Maul was a broken man, he'd lost his brother, his syndicate, everything. Not to mention that he'd been wandering in the desert for who knows how long, all he had left was his hate of Kenobi, and when it came down to it, that hate wasn't enough.
Something I just noticed with Kenobi’s stance changes is that he switched from 3 stances. First one being the 2 finger stance from episode 3, the second one being the Alec Guinness stance where he holds the saber forward at an angle, then the last one being the Qui Gon stance to trick Maul. I never noticed the second one since it looked like a generic pose.
The Interdictor Cruisers (ships that create gravity wells) actually have a long history in the old Legends content. One of my favorite things about Filoni is his willingness to go back to Legends and bring some of it back to life.
The death of maul is absolutely perfect, the way Obi-Wan doesn't ignite his lightsaber until Luke is threatened, and he then switches from the Ewan McGregor stance, to the Alec Guinness stance, but then ends on Qui-Gon's stance, which then baits Maul into using the exact move he used to kill Qui-Gon, which Obi-Wan then perfectly counters. It perfectly showcases how far Obi-Wan has come, having come to terms with Qui-Gon's death and using his past to learn, while also highlighting Maul's inability to move on from his hatred and vengeance, and how that was what killed him. It's the perfect ending for that story and that character, it cannot be understated how incredible that moment was. I really wish the episode didn't feature Ezra and Chopper and was just a slow exploration of Maul and Obi-Wan's characters and relationship, building to that immaculate ending
I was really hoping Holden would get the point with Twin suns, so I’m definitely disappointed that he missed it, over all though this was a great reaction and I’m glad they enjoyed the zero hour two parter
It doesn’t matter about the “point”. It doesn’t change the fact that it was one of the hugest mistakes that Star Wars could’ve ever made. They never should’ve killed him off in the first place. Poetic or not… it was a disservice to his character to go out in a 5 second fight. Idc what reference it is to phantom menace or what poses they used, tomato tomoto changes nothing. They never should’ve killed him off. He was one of the best characters Star Wars has ever made & to have him killed off by any character that’s less than him (which is every other character in Star Wars) is disgraceful. Maul’s my favorite character, I like Kenobi but I couldn’t be more happier knowing that he dies in New Hope after this scene. I hated Kenobi & the writers when I saw this god forsaken episode & I’ll never forgive them for this
@@packedentertainment2866 He died so quickly bc hes overconfident. At heart hes a sith, theyre overconfident. Maul sees Obi as an old weak desert rat, eventhough hes a jedi master, so he underestimates him, which gets him killed. Maul was also blinded by revenge. Overconfidence has always been maul biggest charecter trait, so why act like he should suddenly be different here. imo perfect ending.
Did you catch that Maul tried to kill him the same exact way he killed Qui-Gon Jinn? Also the subtle disappointment from Kenobi of Maul dying words? The whole reason he died so fast was he got stuck in his ways and was still dark side
Maul's death was not only an homage to Seven Samurai but also how QuiGon was slain, his death was a direct mirror to how he falls. The dialog Maul says to Obi-wan was a sort of dark twist from "He Is The Chosen One. He Will Bring Balance" to "is he the Chosen One...?" "He will avenge us" the major twist being Obi-wan TRUELY acknowledging the fact that there is a Chosen One that needs to be protected and raised with care instead of refuting it thinking the Chosen One would be for granted if they truly exist (basically all the way up till Anakin's fall and for years after until the events of Kenobi)
I loved the brevity of the Darth maul death. They didn't cheapen it with a drawn out fight.

I LOVED the fight with Obiwan and Maul. He simply outsmarted him with the Qui-gon stance. Sometimes the best and most meaningful moments happen quickly. Just like the shootout at the OK corral that lasted all but like 30 seconds in real life.
One thing to take notice of the final battle with Maul, Obi wan learned from the past. He struck vertical rather than horizontal this time. And waited to see his last breath.
Something else no one has mentioned, that I can see, this episode confirmed Kanan and Hera hitting the sheets by the fact that Kanan wasn't in HIS room when Ezra went in while the Holocron was going off. 😜😏😊
People complained so much about the final fight with Obi vs Maul but it works so well. Obi-Wan first goes into his Episode 3 stance before switching over to Qui-Gonn's Episode 1 Stance to bait and trick Maul into trying to kill him the same way Maul killed Qui-Gonn and Maul feel for it. 3 hits and it was over. As Obi-Wan told him, "Look what I have risen above.". It also tells me that if Obi-Wan wanted to, he could have easily killed Vader back in Episode 4.
I like that this final fight with Maul somewhat enhances the lightsaber duel in Episode 4 because yeah, Obi-Wan is old now and can't jump around and flip flop over and all that other crap but with his age he's gained experience too and he could easily have destroyed Vader if he wanted to. But Vader wasn't his to kill essentially. It makes Old-Man Obi-Wan feel like a badass now and its poetic Maul dies in the hands of someone he caused so much pain and yet both lost so much too because of Sidious' manipulations and ideals.
Imagine what could have been had Maul not given into hate and rage and chose to follow the light and actually help the Rebels or Obi-Wan. But too much bad blood between them essentially. Maul's rage, anger and hate for Obi-Wan especially is what kept him alive when he should have been dead long ago. He was basically like Darth Sion. A walking corpse held together by all the pain he had towards that one enemy and the tragedy of it all is Obi-Wan wasn't even his real enemy to begin with after everything else that happened.
It’s more than that, the stances they took. It was the same technique Maul used on Qui-Gon when he killed him. Obi-Wan remembered and knew how to defend and break it. The scene was poetic through and through
Now that you've seen Maul and Obi wan "fight" again you gotta watch Sam Witwer's (maul voice actor) deep dive of that fight and whole scene. It's amazing and makes it so much more beautiful!

Easily one of my top 3 lightsaber fights in all of Star Wars. It’s so poetic, and it’s right on the money for how a duel with old master kenobi would have gone. I love that he doesn’t ignite his saber until Maul says the exact wrong words, putting Luke in danger. Obi Wan’s decision was already made at that point.
I have no problem with obiwan and Darth Maul duel ended so quickly because their fight has been going with so long so it was really good to end it with that because Maul was about to do the same thing he did to jin
If you want more Thrawn, you should check out both the Legends & Canon Thrawn trilogies. For the canon novels, the first one (2015's Thrawn) takes place a few years before Rebels and was even turned into a comic. The second one(Thrawn: Treason) takes place after the season 3 finale and is a team up with Vader & Thrawn. The third novel (Thrawn: Alliances) takes place during season 4.
You mixed up Alliances and Treason
There's been a lot of analysis of the Obi-Wan/Maul final duel. Both initially square up in the styles that they used when they originally faced each other in Episode 1, but then Obi-Wan shifts his style, while Maul doesn't. It shows how much Obi-Wan has changed and grown, while Maul is still stuck in the past. It's why the battle is so quick. Obi-Wan has learned and improved, while Maul hasn't, allowing Obi-Wan to counter perfectly and quickly.
Just to let y’all know, the Twin Suns episode was released before Season 7 of Clone Wars so they didn’t have as much character development for Maul at the time. Before watching Season 7 I thought that this was a good way to end Maul’s character but after watching Season 7 I kinda wished that they did more with his character in Rebels.
There could never be a single good reason to kill off one of the best characters that this franchise has to offer. He’s money, he’s views. Killing him off was foolish especially the way they did it which was a disservice to his character. It was a bad decision, one of the worst decisions Star Wars could’ve ever made & that says a lot when you look at Jar Jar & the sequel trilogy
The battle between Obi Wan and Maul is a stroke of genius by Obi Wan he tricked Maul with his stance knowing precisely how Maul would attack. It is a little complicated if you don’t know some of the finer details of Lightsaber forms, but you can find several UA-cam videos that explains move by move.
So fun fact: Obi-wan starts the duel with his classic Ewan McGregor stance from the prequels, then moves into the Alec Guiness stance in the Original trilogy, before fooling Maul into thinking he can win by moving into Qui Gonn's stance from Phantom Menace, but the thing is he knows how the duel ends because it worked for Maul back in episode 1, so he mimics the duel and slices through before Maul can make the kill.
I think for a lot of people, the shock of how quick the Maul/Obi Wan fight went down is what contributed to the disappointment. On a technical level it's brilliant, using the characters' developments and history to win the fight, not to mention being a callback to old Samurai movies where there are three moves and one guy just falls over, you didn't even see how it happened. But when you have the character of Maul who has had some of the greatest most impressive duels in Star Wars and you have this build up to this fight, you are going to tick off fans.
I've learned to love it, but it did take some reflection
If you didn't notice, obi wans final stance against maul was the exact copy of his former master. Maul try to use the same move he did against qui gon, but obi wan read it like a book and knew he would try it again.
I believe the organ playing in thrawns theme is suppose to mimic more of the pirates of the Caribbean music with Davy Jones. I think in one of the behind the scenes they said they took inspiration from it.
The battle with obi wan and Darth maul is actually very poetic in a sort of way cause if you pay attention:
Obi wan first used his stance then maul used his starting stance. Next obi wan used qui gons stance from episode one. Finally when maul started attacking maul tried using the same moves he did on qui Gon that killed him but obi wan predicted his move set which led him to cut maul down
It's a sad scene but filled with poetic moments from the first film
1:38 - Maul is no longer a "Darth". He was abandoned by Palpatine, who moved on to other apprentices (Darth Tyrannus, and later, Darth Vader). When that happened, since he couldn't kill his master and become the master himself... he's just "Maul" (which he stated earlier in the series).
Also, don't forget, Rebels takes place between Andor (season 1) at 5 BBY and Rogue One (0 BBY).... season 3 gave us a "time jump" from season 2, and we can judge that from Ezra's appearance. How long, I'm not sure if it's ever been stated, but I'd guess at least a year. Season 4 leads up to Rogue One/A New Hope, and if you look close in Rogue One, when the Rebel fleet comes out of hyperspace, the Ghost is present at that battle. There's also a REAL quick (blink and you'll miss it) cameo by Chopper, also, also, you can hear an announcement calling for "General Syndulla" (Hera) in the background, before the fleet leaves Yavin 4.

I think the Twin Suns episode shows how powerful Obi Wan is when he is tapped into the Force. The final fight between Obi and Vader in Kenobi, showed the power he can have when he opens himself to the Force too. They work together.

So if you look a bit more, the fight with Maul was more nuanced than it seems.
If you notice, Kenobi does his classic clone wars pose first, maul poses, then Kenobi changes.. to the same form that Qui-Gon used when he fought Maul. Maul sees this and then adjusts to the style he used then.
When they started fighting, maul went to hit Kenobi in the face, the same as he did vs Qui-Gon before stabbing him. But Kenobi baited him in to that move, and he struck down at the middle of Maul's saber to end the fight quickly; knowing he doesn't have the stamina for a long drawn out fight with a nimble and powerful opponent.
A long fight would've been great and juicy, but I thought this more nuanced approach really grounded it in how old man Kenobi would truly approach a fight with Maul in his old age. ❤
So glad this video dropped on my birthday! Rebels has been awesome to rewatch with you and it will make the Ahsoka series make way more sense.
If you look closely at the forms that kenobi used it shows how important this fight scene was. First he does his ROTS pose then realizes that guy lost the war so let’s go to the man that learned from his mistakes. The final pose Ben messes with maul and goes into qui gon’s stance to get him riled up. So what does maul do, he used the same attack that kill qui gon and Ben kenobi was ready. The fight between Kenobi and Maul was perfect. At the start Kenobi used his form and then switched to Qui Gons. Maul noticed this and got arrogant thinking he could do the exact same move against Kenobi. This was where he made his mistake, kenobi saw it coming so when Maul went to hit him with the guard to stun him like he did Qui Gon. Kenobi anticipated it and backed up and sliced straight through the guard. Nothing more was needed, like he said “look what I’ve risen above”. He didn’t let his emotions dictate his fight in any way and quickly dispatched the threat.

I'm not gonna lie, I was totally confused by how quick the duel went. I had to have it explained to me in Rebels Recon (there is an episode of that for each episode of Rebels that goes Behind-the-Scenes.) Dave Filoni explained that the entire battle happened in their heads. The shifts in position WERE the battle. Obi-Wan started with his usual stance, then shifted into Qui-Gon's. Maul tried to do the same thing to Obi-Wan that he did to Qui-Gon, but of course Obi-Wan had seen that battle (had probably relived it over and over in his head for the past 30 years) and figured out how to counteract it. Filoni said their biggest regret it bringing Maul back to life in the Clone Wars was that it took away from Obi-Wan's big moment in The Phantom Menace, so they always knew that when they eventually killed Maul again, it HAD to be Obi-Wan.
Also Sam Witwer (voice of Maul) gave an interesting interview where he said Obi-Wan really didn't see Maul as a threat and was holding on to the possibility that he might be able to reason with him. After all, Maul already got his revenge by killing Satine. At first, Maul thought Obi-Wan was just languishing, but then he realized that if there aren't very many Jedi left in the galaxy, and one of the most powerful masters is HERE, then this must be a guard posting. And the only thing important enough to have the last known Jedi master posted at it is the Chosen One. And THAT'S when Obi-Wan ignited his lightsaber.
The Obi-wan vs Maul duel in these episodes is one of the best light saber duel in all of Star Wars. It is basically 3-D chess at 100 mph. Perfect despite its brevity; very Kurosawa style. Obi-wan baited Maul by switching to Qui-gon's stance, so Maul executed the same set of moves that defeated Qui-gon, trying to finish up with smack to the head with his staff handle and stun him. But Obi-wan was beyond that and had the counter prepared.
The fight was perfect. We have to remember that, at this point, Obiwan is a master who had nothing to do but grow as a jedi. He still had purpose in protecting Luke. On the other hand, we have Maul who's only obsessed about seeking revenge on Obiwan and Sidious. Sam Witwer said it best. It's like outgrowing your high school bully whereas they're still the same as they were back then. It's not even close. What's poetic is Obiwan did it by baiting Maul with Quigon's stance. Maul noticed the stance, tried to end it the same way, and got punished for it. Top 3 best lightsaber duel. My personal #1 though.
The Obi-wan vs Maul fight is poetic, because Maul was going to use the same lightsaber move that killed qui-gon. And Obi-wan has never forgotten the move that killed his master. George Lucas has confirmed this fact to be Cannon.

There are videos on UA-cam of Sam Witwer (voice of Maul) explaining why the fight with Obi-Wan is so genius. Basically to summarize, Obi-Wan uses the same fighting stance as Qui-Gon, to remind Maul of the day he lost everything. Once he's in a blind rage like a bull, Maul uses the same attack he tried on Qui-Gon, but that's what Obi-Wan was hoping for. So he had an expected opening and was easily able to defeat him.
Maul use the same move he use to kill Qui-Gon Jinn, do u remember Maul hit him on the head, well Ob-Wam spent replaying that fight for years trying to learn Maul’s moves. When he noticed what Maul was doing look at him he stepped back n cut through the hit to the face n cut him. Maul also try that same move with Asoka on the rafters n it was then that she use the opening to push him off when he went for the face hit.
Maul tried to use the same move on Obi-Wan that he used to defeat Qui-gon and Obi-Wan was ready for it. It’s extremely poetic and it’s nice to see how in Touch Filoni is with Star Wars
I know this video is from 4 months ago, but I really love the final battle between Obi-Wan and Maul. We see Obi-Wan take his usual stance of pointing the lightsaber towards his opponent, before swapping to Qui-Gon's stance of holding it vertically to his right. Maul attempted to use the exact same move he used to kill Qui-Gon, once again failing in his arrogance. And then we get that bittersweet moment of Maul talking to Kenobi in the final minute of his life. "He will avenge us". Kenobi and Maul were both pawns in the game Sidious was playing, and the chosen one would avenge them BOTH. Chef's kiss.

Yeah I’m still in the middle after all these years about the maul and obi fight. I love how poetic it is and braking down the forms and mind games that take place in the duel between the two. They are both my favorite characters and if anyone was going to kill maul it should have been Obi but part of me would have really loved to have seen a more extended fight between the two. Maul was in the wrong mindset though and misread that situation/Obi to a fatal degree. Obi treating maul with respect though holding him as he died in his arms is one of my favorite moments in Star Wars for sure.

The Maul vs. Kenobi fight here was very similar to the fight with Qui-Gon in Episode 1. Notice how Obi-Wan did his classic stance and then changed to Qui-Gon's stance. Maul also tried to use the same move he used on Qui-Gon on Obi-Wan here but it was not successful.
The comments have said much good about the Maul-Kenobi final dual. I was one of the first time viewers and I was in shock. But over time, hearing the breakdown of the psychological fight-before-the-fight, as well as the comparison to samurai fights in cinema and then reviewing the fight several times, I've not only come to accept it, I've embraced it. It is very different than any other fight in Star Wars, but that makes it fresh and interesting. It reminded me of watching one of the best players in my old high school chess club get defeated by the classic 4-move checkmate, not because he didn't know the potential, but because he had his mind set on a very different long-game approach. Every step is vital and potentially lethal, not just a long, wear-down slog to the final move.

Mend this old wound, is a nod to the comics where they fought and it was actually uncle owen that shot maul in the back and killed him.
The great thing about the Obi wan,Maul fight is that Maul trys to use the same moves he did to kill Qui gon. Obi wan changed from his signature stance to Qui gon's and defeated Maul swiftly

If you go back to Phantom Menace and rewatch Qui-Gon’s fight against Maul, you’ll notice that Obi-Wan changes his stance to his former Master. Mail notices this and tries to defeat Obi-Wan the same way he defeated Qui-Gon.

Quick summary of symbolism in Maul final seen.
Maul is no longer evil, he is searching for hope, he is stuck searching in the past. This his continued obsession with Obi-won. Dispute everything, Maul is the same Maul he was in episode one when Obiwon defeated him as merely a padawan.
Obiwon however, has grown, learned, and risen above the padawan he once was, to now be the pinnacle of Jedi master. He doesn’t hate maul, and has no desire to harm the old and angry man that stands before him.
Maul realizes about Luke, who is his entire objective is to protect and keep secret. Now maul must die. But there is no reason to draw it out. First, he stands in the stance he took as a padawan, showing who he was when he first beat maul. Then he stands how he did in the clone wars, showing the Jedi he became, then he stands as his master did, both baiting Maul to attack the way he killed Quigon, but also showing the continued respect of knowing his master, even in death, continued to be his mentor. Mail attacks where his heart is. In the past, striking with the move he used to kill Quigon. Obiwon knows he is stuck in the past and knows exactly how he will attack. But he has risen far above what he once was and is ready. He kills Maul with no anger.
This is not a battle of swords, this is a battle of growth. Obiwon has grown continuously for decades. Maul has only been striving to be what he was when he killed Quigon, the moment Maul views as his peak. He could have become so much more, but he didn’t. So there is no contest. This is not the fight of rivals Maul expects, it’s the fight of an old, broken man, and a Jedi master.
Maul's death was the culmination of around 30 years of history between them. Obi-Wan is now the master he needs to be to save Luke in ANH
The moment between Maul and Obi Wan is one of my favorite moments in Star Wars so many tiny details and callbacks. Obi-Wan starts off in his prequel stance then goes no I have grown and goes into his original trilogy stance but then he goes into Qui-Gon’s stance and Maul does the exact same move he does on Qui-Gon where he hits him in the face with the middle and then stabs him in the chest but this time Obi wan knew and cut through it. It shows how Maul believed he was a washed up pathetic old man but then realized he was fighting a fully realized Jedi Master protecting the most important person in the Galaxy.
Maul dying in Obi-Wan’s shows how good a dude Obi-wan is but obv is a callback to Qui-Gon and Satine’s who both died from Maul in Obi’s hands. And lastly I believe the line “he will avenge us” is two-fold cuz most people think he is referring to himself and Savage since they were often referred to as us and Savage was killed by Palpatine but I think it also works as in Maul’s last moment he realizes his entire life he was used by the Sith, sold to them as a kid, train in these vile ways, and spend majority of his life consumed by revenge.
I like to think in that moment he realized him and Obi-wan were the same, both pawns in a war who got their lives destroyed and everyone they’ve cared abt taken away by the Sith and Luke who they believe is the chosen (obv not) will avenge them both.
I remember in an interview for Season 7 of The Clone Wars, because the Maul and Ben Kenobi duel was so short in Rebels, Dave Filoni intentionally wanted to do a longer, more drawn-out, and more flashy duel for Maul and Ahsoka during the Siege of Mandalore to contrast the two Maul battles.
