The LARGEST gathering of Flexwings - The Flexwing Adventurers - Darley Moor Airfield

- The largest Flexwing Renaissance was held at Darley Moor Airfield to promote The Flexwing Adventurers, a group of fliers that are promoting adventure flying.
The weekend started with fliers keen to arrive on the Friday evening, some even flying in from East Fortune airfield in Scotland. Pilots even came from Cornwall to visit the event.
The events background was the genesis of Andy Oliver who frequently tours Europe in his flexwing, but the idea behind the The Flexwing Adventurers is to encourage other fliers to be mentored so teaming up with less experienced pilots and planning flights.
I frequently get asked about the kit I use, all links or names are below.

That was an amazing achievement, reminds me of less complicated times, the pure pleasures of flight.
It was a great event with lots of volunteers making it happen, also some great weather.
Love Flexwings.
Hi Pelican, it truly was a flexwing gathering.
Awesome weekend and we’ll worth the drive from Cornwall. Next time I’m bringing my SSDR on a trailer to fly with all the adventurists!
Hi David, I'll get the prime parking space all set out, just for you.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Awesome as ever!
@@DavidReckitt Hi David. If you haven't got a trailer yet, I can recommend a company in Bridgwater that made some simple adjustments to a factory made three-bike trailer. The overall cost of the trailer and towing hook was just over £1000 - so a good price. John (Perranporth Flying Club)
@@freebiker2765 Thanks but I have a purpose made one already.
Excellent weekend ….. great to see so many flexwings in one place 😊
Hello David, it certainly was impressive to have so many flexwing pilots in one place as well. It almost became the flexwing Mecca for a few days.
Let’s hope it can become an annual event 👍 don’t forget, you’re always welcome at Clench
Hi @@DavesGyroAdventures ( Senior Service) I am trying to plan a route down there. At 46 mph is a bit of a trek but would be an awesome journey.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 we had a 25mph headwind when we flew back on Sunday …. So our ground speed wasn’t much quicker 🤣
Hi Giles. I really liked Brian Milton's description of the flexwing as an 'aerial motorbike' - that touched a chord with me! Cheers John
Hi John, it's so true, as an ex biker. It's how I describe flexwing to trial flights.
A great film of a great event and really professionally put together .
Hi Phil, I'm assuming Phil is your name. Thank you, it was a really great event which I was trying to capture the flavour of those that attended, while.
Another brilliant video Giles that brings me right back. Great to see Brian Milton looking so well. We've had some fun and interesting times and conversations back in the day and my pal Rob. He's at dizzy heights now but he used to live in the gutter with the rest of us. 😂😂 Whatever you're doing just keep doing it. It's absolutely brilliant.
Hi Paul, it was a cracking event. It's strange for me because I'm a different generation of flexwing pilot, and at the time I didn't know who Brian was or what he'd achieved.
Hello Giles. It's been awhile since I've tuned in. Will have catch up on your videos. Quite a massive fly-in for sure ! Looks like everyone is having a wonderful time. Cheers mate !
Hi Allan, welcome back. Yes it was a big fly-in, but the New Farm BIG fly-in is on my editing slab as I type. It was a wonderful weekend with friends.
Looked good! A few interesting characters too.. 👍👍
The Flexwing Adventurers just don't like staying still. Always looking for the next adventure.
Great vid. Loving the edgy beat music at the beginning and loving the love for flexwings 💪🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hi Ben, it's the joy of Epidemic sound for the music, worth paying for. I do like a bit of funky music. I think this was the same weekend as Fairford where you were with Andy.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 that’s right we were at RIAT. It’s a shame the events clashed otherwise I’d have flown in myself. I’m planning to fly in to Rufforth York next weekend for the Yorkshire day celebrations.
Brilliant video Giles,
Hi Anne, it was all the bits you didn't see while working hard in the Cafe.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 you’ve done a brilliant job, getting as much in as you have, really gives a great overview of lots of aspects of the weekend.
A fantastic weekend. Was chuffed to be a part of it. Looking forward to next years event already. Andy has really sparked my interest in a flying adventure. Nice edit Giles.
Hi Paul, I've already dug out my light weight camping kit ready. I've found a friends field that we can fly to, its only 43 Nm away. I think you appear in some of the footage as well.
You are such a great interviewer Giles with some really interesting contributors. Looked like an awesome event, brilliant as always. Thank you
Hi Terry, you should see the outtakes... Haha. It was a great event. You never know, I might get to interview you one day😉.
Super watch! Great to see flexwings get a much needed spotlight!
Hi Neil, it genuinely was great to see so many flexwings in on place, along with the Flexwing Adventurers, the guys that actually go places.
Nice to see some proper marshalling there Giles, hopefully we'll catch up soon.
Hi Tom, yes, we need a good catch up. I'll try and get to you somehow.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Yeah, Nice Jacket Giles
Marvelous 👍
So many flexwings, certainly out numbered the 3 axis.
Must have been a great event. One of these days the stars will align and I’ll actually get to attend one of these events.
Hi Nicolas, it's been a while and I hope you are well. Yes, let's make those stars align.
What a great weekend it was! It's certainly put DARLEY MOOR on the map for me and I'll certainly be back. Good to catch up again Giles... and as always... great vid ;)
Graeme, you are welcome anytime. The shower block is now on the list for renovation and upgrading.
I need to add correction on my words "None of us are Instructors". We have at least 5 who are Instructors, and who are noted for they way they have encouraged and supported (and often led) students on expeditions as a way of encouraging and mentoring them to step up and away. The point I was trying to make was that we are not seeking, in any shape or form, to get in the way of flying schools. Indeed, the 3rd point of our stated vision is: "Support the providers of the flexwing infrastructure: aircraft manufacturers and importers, airfield/strip operators, providers of technical services, flying schools and the BMAA."
I think there is definitely a difference between Instruction and mentorship. The Flexwing Adventurers is very much a mentorship.
Catching up! Well done for grabbing Rob. I'm finally back in the air, was getting depressed (like Mark working) watching everyone else lol! Can't wait to frequent events!
Hi Martin, I'll hopefully be going to the New Farm ( Piddington) fly-in in October, 15th and 16th.
Martin, glad to hear you are back in the air.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I'll be driving if anything but not too far away 👍
Great to see so many people with such enthusiasm for our sport, definitly really exciting times ahead!
Darley Moor pulled off a great event here, rewarded with plenty of sunshine!
I'm hopeful I can make it next year, if the weather plays fair I'll fly down!
Hi Scott, how much bandwidth did you use for this one.. Haha. Glad you enjoyed it, yes we were very lucky with the weather.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I won't tell if you don't!
Get Mark to book that weather again for next year, get in early.
That’s a big meet! Andy was a bit apprehensive talking about mentorship :) I get it could become a liability :)
It was a great meeting of like minded pilots. The beauty of aviation is that it's a journey and we all choose our path. Yes I agree on Andy's comments, but mentorship is not instruction and all pilots make their own decisions, but stretching your comfort zone is part of that journey.
Great to be there Giles, my first real away trip. Pity I could only stay for the Saturday. I'll plan it better next year.
I'm glad you made it and could see the event from the other side of the camera. It was hard to capture everything.
Ha ha you managed to capture my bald head🤣
@@livingladolcevita7318 Oh sorry.
Thanks Giles! That’s the most interesting trike video I’ve seen for a long time. I wish I could find one triker to fly with here. UPDATE - No worries and Now Sorted: "Seems my trike rebuild has stalled due to slow slow slow wing completion. WHY! I’m getting frustrated now. What can I do?" Wing will be on the way soon!
Hi Stewart, I don't know what to suggest regarding your wing. I know people in the UK are waiting 18 months and being set the wrong parts. It's almost like P&M don't want to make any trikes. There was a brand new QuikR at the event but it still had issues. The DeltaJet does seem to be getting a lot of interest.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 What does Mark say about supplies? The same?
Wow looks like it was a brilliant weekend hope I'm available next time. Great content as usual Giles.
Hi Lee, yes it was a great weekend, busy for the helpers but all round a wonderful event.
Gutted I couldn't be there but you captured it really well! Fabulous interviews too! Roll on the next Troutflex, I had a great time at this year's one. Many thanks to Andy for being such a driving force and a dammed nice fellow to boot!
Hi Mike, yes, he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. It was great to meet so many like minded pilots. I can definitely see the appeal. I now need to work out what I can carry in a Peabee.
Gutted I missed it!
But you had been on your own adventure overseas.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 had brownie points to make up 😀
Very true.
You do this TV presenting very well Giles, the BBC should give you a slot for an hour or so on BBC 2 and call the show "Flexwing World" or something! My goodness me "Brian Milton" - he was a hero of mine back in the '80s he inspired a lot of people to fly and to think he was frightened of heights at one point, an amazing man! Are you going to show more from this event?
Hello David, I don't quite think I'm BBC quality, you should see the outtakes. It was great to meet him as well. I don't have much more footage from the event as I was also working, so trying to vlog at the same time was quite difficult. I only got very small snippets of the talks but nothing with any good audio.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Giles you do your self down your enthusiasum alone for flying is a pleasure to watch mate!
@@flybe146 on that subject, I do enjoy what I do. You have been such a great supporter of my channel almost from the very beginning.
I do think the Sub 70 and SSDR flex wings are a big driving force to flex wings coming back from the dark. I do hope that things open up a bit over the channel to make it just that little bit easier to go on an adventure for SSDR and Sub 70s.
Hi Algy, I think the issue with Europe will be the Sub70s will have to be SSDR to fly over the channel. We've been looking at it already. But the Sub70 pilots are definitely keeping the bottom of flexwing flourishing.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I must look at the paper work needed to get into France with a none permit aircraft (SSDR).
If Heineken did flexwing fly-ins.....
Haha, yes that would be the standard.
What a brilliant event. Is it on again this year? Where can I find out details? I'll probably have to drive down but I'd love to camp out there.
Hi Simon, I'm not sure. It was supposed to be at Deenethorpe last year but the weather just played havoc with all the events. You have the World Microlight Competition at Deenethorpe this year.
@GolfFoxtrot22 Interesting. I might have two working legs by then. I might have started flight training too. Cheers.
@SimonAmazingClarke I'll be there for the comp week so come and say hello so I can meet you in person.👍🏻
@@GolfFoxtrot22 I look forward to it. Cheers.
Hello Giles, i have just got interested in flexwing, coming from a background of hang gliding, paragliding and paramotoring.
I loved the video and wished id known about the fly in. Is this going to be an annual event and if so i can i get more information.
Hi Brian, welcome to the world of silly grins when you fly. Unfortunately this was a one off. Where about are you located and I could help steer you to somewhere or come to Darley Moor (Micro Training) and they can help.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Hi Giles. Thanks for the reply, and that's a pity it looked like a great gathering and weekend.
I'm in Co. Antrim and have booked into initial training in Spain in May and hope to complete it in the UK.
Maybe there'll be a fly in England or Scotland and I'll get to it.
Hello sa
Hand gliding price
The price of the PeaBee is about £12,000
Nice one Giles. That was a fantastic weekend. Very much looking forward to more of those. That DeltaJet formation with Dave in G-POLR is a very special bit of video! 😀
Hi Paul, it was great to meet you in person. I think you made the clip at the very end of the video as well.
@@GolfFoxtrot22 Hi Giles, It was great to meet you too. The video was perfect. I had to laugh because everywhere I go, I end up sitting next to a big dog. 🤣
