Fixing the F8x M2 / M3 / M4 S55 Crank Hub Slip - Evolve 4 Pin Billet Keyed Crank Hub Upgrade

- Every BMW M Engine seems to have its Achilles heel, and for the S55 it is the Crank Hub! This issue has plagued owners, especially those looking to get more power out of their turbo M car. We're proud to now offer a fully developed fix for the issue, meaning owners have the peace of mind that the flawed factory part has been removed for our upgraded billet crank hub that we have personally stress tested to well over 700hp.
Thanks to Dylan from @r44performance for letting us borrow his M2 Competition to film this video with.

#CrankHub #S55 #M2C #M3 #M4 #F80 #F82 #F83 #F87
Wow! You guys are no joke. Really wished I lived in the UK to be able to have your team take care of my (F87) M2 Comp
Order it and get it fitted by a local garage?
We ship worldwide and are happy to try and recommend a local workshop we know where possible ✌🏻
I have a 2016 f82 m4 s55 full stock with 82k kms; no crank hub fix, zero troubles, when warm it gets driven spiritedly; fast enough🥳 thanks for the content still ❤️
The mechanic is top tier 👍💯
I played it at 0.25 speed when refitting , didn't see much use of a torque wrench
Imran is such a well of knowledge...would be interesting spending even a day with this man to learn about inner details of BMW engines...Nice one gents!
I was one of the early adopters of this, by MaximumPSI/Bimmerclinic here in the States back in 2018. They are the pioneers of the original 2 pin design, and it has evolved to the 4 pin design you have here. Unfortunately they stopped selling them as numerous improper installs done by outside shops lead to failures, all traced back to drilling the crank. Mine was solid for the 3 years I had the car, I just couldn't love it. Even with 100whp over stock. The 2nd owner totalled it, I can only assume doing the no-hesi garbage, as it was a massive front end lick.
Nice touch there Hash👊
Great work as always by the guys at Evolve👌
Worth every penny I’d say if your running big BHP on these engines, better to be safe than sorry I’d say👍
Wow guys!!! Great engineering work!! That is a lot work but as always great work from Hash!!!
Very smart develop a part where there's a massive amount of labour to fit it ❤
Yes so we can only fit one every 2 days, rather than say our paddles which take 30 mins.
Unfortunately to fix this properly it takes a lot of time, but then it’s fixed for good.
When I get my M4 you guys are the first place iam driving to you are awesome 👍🇬🇧👍🇬🇧
Guys, I miss your air intake design and testing videos a lot!
New ones coming soon
What’s the price inc installation? Cheers
£2599.99 inc VAT supplied and installed - www.evolveautomotive.co.uk/products/evolve-pinned-crank-hub-bmw-f87-m2-competition-f80-m3-f82-f84-m4-s55?variant=45253837685027
GREAT CONTENT !!! THANK YOU!!!!!😎
The first Inline 6 M engine s38 have a similar problem. So far is hanging on with red threadlocker 😓
Does it applied for a manual gear? Cheers from Brazil
If I have an M4 F82 with stage 2 remap, downpipes, and intake, Mi gonna have that crank hub problem? or is it just when you go hybrid turbos... because I want to drive pacefully and not thinkinh i´m gonna blow the motor for driving hard.
If you’re worried about it and it’s going to ruin the enjoyment of the car, get it done. We try to lay out the facts as unbiased as we can in this video.
Is there anyway of knowing if this has already been done on a car if the seller/garage doesn’t know? Any visual signs without any kind of strip down?
Unfortunately no. Like with E9x M3 rod bearings if the seller doesn’t mention them I’d assume they haven’t been done as it’s a nice value adding item for a sale.
How much to supply and fit?
Currently £2000 inc VAT - www.evolveautomotive.co.uk/products/evolve-pinned-crank-hub-bmw-f87-m2-competition-f80-m3-f82-f83-m4-s55?variant=45253837685027
Won’t need it unless your running over 550 hp
Most stage 1 safe tunes can catback is plenty the car is already very fast for street driving stock.
doesnt it also need a crank bolt capture plate?
No it does not.
I have a stage 2 tune 93oct would you recommend upgrading the crank hub?
It’s a 2020 m2 comp.. thank you
If you want peace of mind then yes, if you’re happy to risk it then no
I’m in the US.. I’m considering buying from your website.. just calling around to see about labor costs.
why 2 pieces instead of 1?
As said in the video, ease of installation
is it less strenght than one piece?@@EvolveAutomotive
No, the interlocking key design means it is impossible for the 2 parts of the hub to move independently
2018 M4 competition 75,000 KM
Stock and I dont have the issue
Yes staying stock it shouldn’t be an issue
What a stupid, lazy OEM design. Great looking fix.
You work too fast man we need to learn your game
Who buys an m2 seriously, just be a man and get an m3
M2 is more fun.
M2 is more compact with the same power, m3 is a boat. M2 is a true sports car
Buy a Lexus instead and save yourself a small fortune.
Less goo
What is the risk of the pins sheering? Does it still use any sort of friction disc from the original oem implementation?
EVOLVE have worked on my brothers E90 M3 on 3 occasions and they do excellent work. Hash is the best mechanic there, he always gave feedback on the car and is always polite and courteous. The other one don’t even make eye contact he just give you the keys and walk off without a peep.
Longer videos please love you guys content least 25mins I need 😂😂
We don’t like to waste peoples time with waffle!
My 1M N54 spun its hub. Hybrids and 26psi on e85 will do it. Mine was only a slight spin, no internal damage but timing was out enough that the engine wouldn't run.
Very nice and informative video,
I have some question if you don't mind
_Do the crank hub parts you fit have any influence on crank balance and does drilling into it affect his integrity at all?
_Could a different Harmonic damper fix the slipping issue?
_Have you guys seen rod bearing issues on S55?
Asking because seems the perfect time to check them while doing the crank hub fix
Cheers
They are machined to extremely tight tolerances and are balanced so therefore do not negatively effect the balance of the crank.
As said in the video we believe the main issue of the slip issue is from the use of friction material on the hub itself.
Haven’t seen any rod bearing issues personally but with poor maintenance and a bad owner any engine may suffer damage.
@@EvolveAutomotive
Thanks for your reply
Is it true that that friction washer has been updated during the S55 production?
From our own experience 2017 cars seem to suffer more, indicating in a potential material change or manufacturing discrepancy, but we cannot say for certain.
@EvolveAutomotive which year its the worst for the crank hub issue? I read that after 2016 the issue was solved.. could you give me details?
Does this issue affect the OG M2 with the N55 engine?
It has the same crank hub yes, but we must admit we’ve not really heard of it being an issue and have not carried out this upgrade on our own N55 M2
Some dumb engineering. Plastic fuel pumps, no dipsticks, worthless hubs. ugh. Why do I love BMWs. . . . . . .
Thank you the best detail video in UA-cam about this issue BMW
Thank you very much I know right now what's going on
How much does this job cost? I’m guessing at least $3000 usd?
This was a big job 😂.. How much do you guys charge for this
£2599 inc VAT supply and fit
Looking for your advice if that’s ok. In the states. Daily driver. Eyes set on m2. N55 or s55 variant for roughly 6-8k more? Which would you suggest. Idk if I’ll ever track it but I may, who knows? I’m a huge Motorsport fan so there is always a possibility. Thanks.
We personally love the OG M2 with the N55, purely for sound the S55 will never sound as good to us - Plus it is hard to argue with the cost savings. I'd rather spend that 6-8k more on a CSF Intercooler, exhaust and our remap/CS software for the N55. Maybe see if you can get some M4 seats too, as the N55 ones are a bit basic.
@@EvolveAutomotivethank you for your opinion. I was actually leaning this way also just bc of sound. It’s such a huge factor for me and I didn’t want to get too crazy with power anyways. Like 450 at most with some basic bolt ons and a tune. I know I could do this with the s55 variant very easily but like you said the sound is just not where i want it to be.
Does the the timing chain need to be replaced as well?
Doesn’t have to be, we recommend it on higher mileage cars as a ‘while you’re in there’ but leave it down to the customer.
Not necessary to do on M2 N55??
It has the same crank hub yes, but we must admit we’ve not really heard of it being an issue and have not carried out this upgrade on our own N55 M2
Typical torsional vibration issue, i can only think of 2 things. Increased power and launch control
A simple Woodruff would have been so simple
hey i like to know what is tha gasket kit for installation
Curious if this is the root cause of the problem with Joe Achilles M2 engine problem🤔
Pretty sure he downshifted into 2nd instead of 4th so could be.
Hi there :) Is the crank hub fix required if car has catless downpipes and a stage 2 tune?
As said in the video, it’s not something we require, it’s down to the customer, so some more research alongside this video and make your mind up.
I've seen someone spin theirs on a BM3 Stage 2 tune with just downpipes, I'd do it if you want to sleep easy and it's a value add if you ever sell the car.
That said, stateside this is like a $5-6k job.
@@greatcolor there are lots of shops that will do it for 3k
Im about to take ownership of an M2 Comp. Is there any shop you recommend in texas? The vehicle has less than 10k miles, but eventually, I'd like to get it done just for the piece of mind?
Congrats! Drop us an email - sales@evolveautomotive.com
So it has to be done if you get a m2c? damn
Great work gone into a great solution, top quality as always.
If the engine is stock?
Should still be done. This part has failed on stock and tuned engines.
is this less cost than a 1 piece unit? if not what's the advantage?
Did you not listen to anything he said? 😂🤦♂️
@@Gentlemen_london_ I mean compared to a single piece 4 pin not the standard one!
As said in the video, ease of installation.
Why now? A bit late to the party no?
Never too late to the party. These cars have many years left in them.
Really🤔…. Why’s that then🤔
These cars if maintained correctly last for thousands & thousands miles.
This is a preventative measure to ensure this esp when running big BHP!👌
Yeah I get that. I have an f80 myself which I plan on having for a very long time…
Just thought someone like yourselves would of made this back when the problem first became a thing. Not 9 years after the f80s release.
@@fe1jx240. So it would be better if we didn't make it all? I don't get the logic.
@@EvolveAutomotive Keep making them because I might eventually have an M2Comp in another 9 years
