Should we buy a high mileage M4? F8x M3/M4 Buyers Guide
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 чер 2024
- The values of F8x M3/M4's are dropping - You can now pick one up in the UK for £20,000! But with this comes certain problems, one of them being higher mileage.
After running our E92 M3 High Mileage project we wanted to do similar on the F8x platform, as we think they are starting to be an incredible value proposition. But is it the deal of the century or buyer beware?
We take a look at this F82 M4 with 125,000 miles on the clock, sharing some advice on what we look out for when buying a car, and how we carry out our vehicle inspection.

Imran - a bit of side bar question. What pants are you wearing bud? Always love the getup ❤🔥

@@EvolveAutomotive nice one - thank you!
is everything the same on the m2 comp or is there differences?
Imran, believe you already know this, F8X M cars have solid mounted rear subframes (no rubber bushes) whereas, E9X M cars have rubber bushing mounted rear subframes. Cheers from a very rainy Southern California at the moment!
I'm not worried about high miles, i'm worried about race miles
Love this idea, would love to see more!
I have 97K miles on my ‘16 F80; daily driven on stock power levels; and no I haven’t done the crankhub! These cars are pretty reliable in comparison to its performance, especially as a daily driver. Highly recommend this platform!
Man specced that piano black steering wheel option xD
i plan to get an f80 within the coming months and have watched so many buyers guides. Everyone tends to state the obvious by checking everything you would check with any car. You state everything that goes into the f8x niche. So many minor details that you state such as oil temp reader corrosion and a rusty bolt as a sign of repair that really makes this guide stand out from the rest. phenomenal.
Just broke 200k miles feels like 50k, FBO full e85 daily driven…love it
L
Thats awesome. I am looking at one with 144k miles with good maintenance and this makes me feel better
@@p00pieMy f80 driveway is very high and it is still at full power, 184547.mile thank God
I've an immaculate late model e63 630i with over 237k miles. It's serviced every 5k. It runs fantastic. My point is, just service your car regularly and replace items that need replacing. And not a single creak. Old school BMW build quality. 😊
Wow that's some mileage,I have a 635d on 90k and I love it, I agree on the build quality defo don't build em like they used to
I have an 2014 m4, done 282000 km's! Tuned to 530 hp. Going really strong! I am amazed.😮😊
175,000 miles! That’s great going, long may you enjoy it
Yours have done more than twice what my 2014 has done. I'm so happy to hear, I will keep this car for a really long time. I'm stage2+ E30 600hp and it's enough for me especially with the handling you get to keep the speed after the corner 😅
Did you have to do your crank hub?
@@kilanjertran428 previous owner did indeed the crankhub and ddid the tuning
Really loved how you’ve gone into details around the whole car and explained all the weak points.
I would really prefer the OEM+ look with some nice power upgrades!
Keep up those videos, really like those high mileage series!
Congratulations to the camera man , what a beautiful pick up 💯
Thank you for putting this video together, looking forward to following the series
Great video, helpful for people looking to buy high mileage F8x cars but also for us owners with higher mileage F8x cars and helping us understand some maintenance items we might want to consider. I'm at 105k miles have owned it from 40k miles and only issues Iv had were leaking charge cooler and leaking pvc from the valve cover
I'm looking to change the rear differential bushings. My car is a '14 and looks brand new underneath. I have tuned it to ≈600hp. Haven't done the crankhub but it's been beat on. It holds up. Owning it is a pleasure, very reliable and parts are cheap. I've done diff fluid and brake fluid, otherwise only oil. Will do chargepipes in titanium (blew one but fixed it temporarily) with spark plugs this spring.
I have had my f80 less than a year really interesting video will be following this series closely
Hi Matt and all colleagues thanks for this video
Great vid, super informative. Just wish it came out a month ago! Also love to see the original chrome grilles and tips alongside the 437M wheels. Great looking car
The steering wheel shines like a star, shine bright like a diamond.
Well worth a watch, well presented too..
Hi Matt and all colleagues,
A great video with in-depth detail which will benefit anybody wishing to purchase a high mileage M4 F82. I would really like to see the installation of your new turbos, what type of product or will you be using your in-house product. As for tuning, it would be great to see a see a dyno test base results after the new turbo installation as a measure, followed by a single or double equal length mid pipe and a back box installation, followed by another dyno test to compare the bhp/ whp power gain. Thanks again for such a detailed video.
Bilal Abdallah
Please do more of these they're interesting and useful
Yes please, more of this. And, maybe even high mileage maintenance. I am a “poor” person with an f80 and want to keep it as long as possible.
This is exactly what I want to do with the project - On face value this is great value for the performance of the car, but is it expensive to run?
I have a 2015 that I bought new and it has 103k miles. Appreciate the content going forward thanks
I love the fact the the camera man is more knowledgeable about the diagnostic of the car :)
We’re all really in to cars here, work on our own etc, safe to say Aston and Hash are always on hand to share their knowledge 🙏🏻
Great video guys. As someone who is looking at getting an f82 m4, can you mod this to create the ultimate UK b-road spec and consider some of the questions buyers will be considering? Which suspension is best e.g. B16? Kw3? Can you give it CS maps for DCT/transmission/steering and test before and after? Should you do crank hub fix? What exhaust strikes best balance of sound and livability?
Thank you for this vid! Congrats on the car! Ive missed the boat on E9XM several times so im looking to snag a high mileage F82 while they are cheap near me.
Best of luck searching!
Thanks, guys, for this. In the market for exactly one of these. Will bring it down for check.
Best of luck! There’s a lot of cars in the market, not all of them have been this well looked after.
I have my 2018 F80 M3 Competition since 2019 currently 7,500 miles on it so super low mileage ! My car is in new condition ! Interesting video thank you very much !
When buying a car always look for matching tyres, a dry engine bay that’s not been steam cleaned and ALWAYS tell the owner you want to start it from cold.
Why cold
@@derekporter66 engine might struggle to start cold, might make strange noises that go away when warm, might have a dash light that goes when warm. all concerns that you need to know before buying
Im driving a 540 HP Gpower Software on stock Engine, stock crankhub for 40.000 KM it now has 150.000km and everything is fine
Great video! Looks like a nice clean car considering the high mileage. Nice to see another F8X project, since I have an F87. I'd love to see you go through the front and rear suspension bushings, changing seals on the differential, servicing the differential and transmission, then onto the engine. Find out where the oil is going, replace the turbos and since it won't cost me anything, go for some engine upgrades. ;) Regarding the lack of feel in the steering, let us know it feels after you replace the front tires. I will be very surprised if a proper set of front tires doesn't make a huge difference.
Great video mate
Lovely car! I would be very happy with that!
100% check the intercooler reservior level, i made that mistake of not checking when i bought mine... came to find out it was leaking internally for years. $1,500 for new Mishimoto intercooler and few gaskets, and had to remove the intake manifold to clean the valves as they was caked with dried coolant.
A friend just bought a M3 2015 150.000 km in Brussel and was always serviced by BMW : running like it’s first day
Good video ,, well detailed
I may need to bring my car to Aston to have a look at my steering also, feels exaclty like you explained this m4 at the front, ever since kerbed at like 1mph in the snow steering felt funny bit of play on front left, I took bmw for main dealer service, they said nothing wrong with it and said maybe book in for alignment, I did the alignment on a hunter alignment and I can still feel play on front left since alignment, although alignment gave a bit more confidence in cornering.
would be interesting to change the front tyres and test drive it again. Just to indicate how much feel there is in budget tyre or premium. Would also interesting to do a deep clean on the leather steering wheel. Its soo shiny, it looks awefull alsmost plastic like.. Cheers to the camera man on his new wheels!
Great video 👏
Lower and upper control arms is a must and maybe bushes, then turbo oil leaks
I always preferred the look of the m3 on the same wheels as this one
High mileage modified F8X do exist. Dave Welsh @ DRW Performance has hybrid turbod his 140k mile test car and it's ripping 700+hp on meth injection. I'm on his hybrids and insane 4 pinned hub at 84k miles so it's good for me to know the car will take it for another chunk of miles!
Nice car with that milage, certainly in the right place to get it tip top 👍🏻
Welcome to ZA and wish you a good one in our mother city😊😊😊
This is great atuff! Would be awesome if you did the dame with a 535i
Good to see a high miles car being assessed and worked on.
I would like to see a detailed maintenance series on "how to bring your high miles M3/4 back to rude health" series. Try to make to apply to other models in the series too if you can, like the F3x, as much is shared between them and you'll get a wider audience hopefully. I'm mainly asking as I have a F36 440i GC and BMW has never made a M4 GC. Perhaps highlight parts that can be swapped from the M version to the more regular versions, similar to the LCA swap from the 1M to the 130/135i back in the days. Do the M4 LCA fit the 440i? The LSD? The suspension?
I've got a 94k mile 2015 FBO stage 2+ m4. I didn't have to do the crank hub until around 85k miles. I've replaced the brakes and had to redo my carbon roof. Need to do a paint correction, but the car has been reasonably reliable for me, and I hope it stays that way. If you want to get into the car, I'd recommend a 2017+ just for the facelift, the EZ programmable Apple car play, etc. Great video, and everything in it is excellent advice for those who are looking to get into the platform!
Can you elaborate what you mean by redoing the CF roof? Re-clear coat? how much was that?
Change those front tires . The sidewall must be very thin and it probably feels like driving a higher profile one. Even halfway worn quality ones can make steering not feel direct , and with low feedback.
Great thanks for that…interesting
I thought a 2018 car will have the LCI front and rear Lights, great content guys
Later in the video we explain why this is
Some nice bbs x spoke wheels
Sounds like a bag of spanners lol. JUST KIDDING 😂Congratulations on the purchase 👏
Yes
Looking forward to this. Mine only has 6k miles so will be interesting to see what effects milage has on the cars. I like that hoodie is it available to buy? 👀
We have merch on our website - www.evolveautomotive.co.uk/collections/accessories
I plan to own mine for a very long time. 600hp in a 1620kg car with good handling without too much tech is perfect for me. But I think I want to replace the differential bushings.
Yes common issue with these is the differential bushings, replace with upgraded polyurethane and won’t ever need to touch it again.
I'm going to be doing the same thing in the US this year. It's going to be a sometimes track car, overall fun street toy. Is there any reason to spend the extra money on the Competition or CS? Do they come with any upgrades that are impossible to cover by the aftermarket? Great video, thank!
If modifying the car there’s no real reason to get a Competition (unless you really like the seats with holes in)
The CS has a few more changes and if not wanting to modify (or not modify heavily) would probably be the best base other than value.
I'd take my mechanic who will have the car up on axles stands for a good look, if the buyer refuses - walk away! probably best to ask in advance if they are okay with that though.
Here for it
Yes.... s55 pls
What the total cost to replace all of that?
Lovely e60 m5 next to it
Awesome video again. Maybe I missed it, but any specific build years or avoid?
Later cars have better spec such as wireless CarPlay etc, very late Euro M4s will have an OPF in the exhaust.
We have seen/heard of more 2017 onwards cars suffering from crank hub slip but wouldn’t want to say categorically that earlier cars wouldn’t suffer from it too.
Some people prefer the LCI lights and how they look.
In the U.K. a 2018 onwards car will be cheaper road tax once they reach 5 years old (like this one)
Cool, thanks! Will keep my eyes open for them, I do love the design of the F80’s!
What is the fix for the leaky turbos? Is it $500 or $5000?
I’ve noticed a lot of preowned F8X vehicles have been modified and possibly tuned. Hard to find a stock high mileage vehicle like y’all found.
Very popular cars to be modified. Some of course have been modified well and looked after, but others sadly have not had quite the treatment you’d like.
Get an F80 M3! Fix all the rattles and noises. That would be cool to get a full breakdown on how to fix all the rattles in the interior for cheap
Hi how much would a check like this cost to do on a 340i 2016-2019?
35:18 You forget the m performance alieexpres carbon exhaust tips on a non m performance backbox 😜
They’ve been dealt with 😂
My 4 series has the same gap on the bonnet passenger side. Never had the bumper adjusted either.
Mines on the drivers side and not sure mine has had anything happen to it either. It’s flipping annoying though. I have some peace knowing I’m not alone 😂😂
@@CMD_Line the hood is probably not latched all the way !
What about the steering rack?
Roughly how much would this service cost
5:58 What's that equipment?
Confusing for the front end to not feel good with different tires in all corners half of them from n.korea.
18 plate pre lci? What the lol.
As for the delay between production and registered date. Then no doubt it hsd issues after production and quality control quarantined it. It was then most likely in wip (work in process) for ages until the fix or replacement was carried out.
Quite possible, but also in the U.K. it’s not uncommon for a car like this to be ordered then cancelled, meaning the dealer has to find a new buyer, which can lead to it sitting around for a while.
seen a 2017 with 232k miles. Made me feel less bad about potentially buying a 82k mile one for $16k. I think thats a steal personally.
Those “itchy fanny” tyres on the front 😳🙄
Great review there Aston for people buying these cars with space shuttle milage on them👍😂
Crank hub🤔
23000£ 😮😮😮 here in germany this kind of M4 would cost about 30000£. In 2016 we had no problems here in Munich with parts supply for the f82.
Imran, believe you already know this, F8X M cars have solid mounted rear subframes (no rubber bushes) whereas, E9X M cars have rubber bushing mounted rear subframes.
Cheers from a very rainy Southern California at the moment!
Yes, this is one reason the F8x do not age quite as badly because on our high mileage E92 M3 project it was the subframe bushes that made the biggest difference’
The thermostat is aluminium, it’s doesn’t corrode, its oxidisation. 😊
ALSO PPI ESPECIALLY WITH BMWS!!! Turbo job can easily be 7k!
What turbo's would you guys recommend for replacement. I have a higher mileage F82, and most likely will upgrade the turbo's at some point next year. I know there are a lot of options , but other than oem , for a slight power bump and lasting longevity , I wondered what would be a good choice.
If looking for more power the Mosselmans are an excellent choice for reliability, drivability and power.
We’re also going to be investigating a more OEM or perhaps OEM+ fix for those not wanting to for 6-700hp
Matt, I would black out the chrome kidney grills, that's a must, a front splitter also makes a huge improvement for the appearance in my opinion :) congrats on the buy!!
The chrome is staying on this one!
@@EvolveAutomotive Chrome FTW!!
I’d bet that loose feeling in the suspension/steering is due to the cheap tires.
Tried budget tires on my C63 and it became a completely different car. Had to do burnouts constantly just to get rid of the insane tire squeel lol. My 5 series diesel daily didn’t change too much when I swapped to studded winter tires, but these high performance cars definitely need sportier tires.
Could be alignment as well. Rear differential bushings are also a wear and tear item. Owning one myself I think they are very robust and reliable. It's now a ten year old car but the condition it's in is proof of the quality of the car.
Btw what year, mileage and are you tuned? I love AMG's nothing sounds meaner than an angry Mercedes.
@@Salpeteroxid I actually just had the alignment done june 2022. Steering wheel was off from sliding around too much lol.
It’s a 2012 S204 C63 performance with limited slip diff, went in to Brabus when it was new for a factory approved tune and Brabus cosmetics such as alcantara steering wheel, alcantara armrest and Brabus shift paddles. It’s almost on 110k km (68k miles), and since it’s an AMG wouldn’t surprise me if you’re correct, suspension components are consumables.
@@Salpeteroxid And yes I agree, the new C63 with a 4 cylinder is just depressing when put next to these 6.2L NA V8’s. I’d happily replace my daily for an EV when time is right, but when weekend rolls around I’m gonna want something that’s actually fun and exciting.
@@jgripen969 The comment about the bushings was a reply on your comment. You said the loose feeling could be because of the tires. A known consumable on the F80 and F82 is the differential bushing.
It wasn't about your car. I've never owned or driven a C63. I was very close to buy one in 2021 just before I signed the papers for the 435i I previously owned.
I bought my M4 for a ridiculously good price and my insurance is crazy good. Seams to only apply to my VIN/number plate. All other cars are much more expensive. I've fallen in love with the car and spent a lot of money on tunes and transtune, got rims and diffuser coming as well as charge pipes and a spoiler. I love the "race car" feel of it and the precision. But I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I wouldn't want to own an AMG V8. I wish I had the funds for 2 high performance cars. AMG consists of a roudy bunch of 8 cylinders in a strenuous conflict with traction and noise regulations.
Judging by your name, are you Swedish?
How much miles can this engine make?
You’re right about the dealer-fit tyres, but that’s seriously cheaping-out, fitting those on a car of this type. Most people buying a car like this will look at the tyres. Clueless dealer 😕
Hey Matt and crew! Great content! Congrats on the car! Is it Carbon Black?
Thanks! No it’s actually Azurite Black Individual, but it’s very similar to Carbon Black being a very dark blue with blue flake that appears black at times.
@@EvolveAutomotive Wow! It really is a classy spec car. Bet it will come back to life after a detailing session! Thank you for the video!
Definitely a good detailing session needed
BMW springs do have labels from factory.
Yeah after making this comment I noticed G8X coming in with them on. Some parts only come with the label if supplied as a replacement part rather than from the factory.
Who’s doing the inspection here? The mechanic or the camera guy? Let the pro do the show x
I usually ask the dealer for its warranty claim history.
This is a good tip!
Front is likely not great because of the Linglongs on it vs ps5 on the back.
Damn I want to see this breakdown on a F90 M5.
One for the future for sure
Weird that this is a PRE LCI on a 18 plate, I’ve had 2 ‘18’ F82s and both LCI with the newer iDrive, haven’t watched the full video so not sure if it was addressed
It was addressed later in to the video
Why does nobody ever clean their steering wheel?
Yellow wrap, fix those turbo's and a tune.
The leaky turbo could also just be blowby from the pcv right?
The front one is most likely a result of blow by, where the oil is coming from we need to investigate.
The second one that is leaking around the core is the turbo itself. We’ll be investigating where it’s coming from in a future video.
My motor blew at 49k miles. Got a new motor hopefully this one will last. Me personally I would not buy and high performance sports car with over 100k and I wouldn’t buy any M car with over 50k.
Hi...How much did the engine fix cost ?
@@maximusEaglethe new engine cost was $39k installed
The lack of steering feel is because the thrust arm bushings. You can’t see any damage on them, but they will get soft. They last 50-60k miles. New oem or power flex and it will be sharp again
You are actually wrong, when my F82 was new it lacked steering feel due to the electric steering set up is why and you can adjust stiffness with touch of a button.
I have f82 and a thing I learnt with mine was high oil consumption with no obvious sign of leak but otherwise mine seems fine and hard diagnose on a test drive
How often is it using a litre? If there’s no obvious sign it’s usually burning it
@@EvolveAutomotive about a litre every 600 to 700 miles. Possibly a bit too smokey but isn’t blueish. Someone said likely to be burning past the turbos but the car seems fine all in all other aspects but really should get to the bottom of it fully
First guess would be turbos leaking internally, as that’s quite a lot of oil to be burning!
I suspect so - I live closer to Mr Vanos than you guys, so probably need to bite the bullet with it. Thanks for advice and top content!
Definitely worth bringing it to us or Mr VANOS for a diagnostics session
Vagueness in steering/front end is most likely those front tyres! Get them swapped. PS5’s aren’t great for steering feel either…
Is it really necessary to replace turbos at this point? If boost is ok, no smoke and no excessive oil consumption.. that small leak doesnt seem to be big issue...
Typically the leaking means they’re on their way to failure. A well running car shouldn’t need an oil top up between servicing, so it’s something we need to investigate.
We also wouldn’t tune a car where the turbos are leaking, for safety.
Look how shiney the steering wheel is
Stage 4 detail on it
Unless you want a dedicated M car, it’s better to go with the b58 for cheaper, and with more tuning potential, and don’t have to worry about the crank cub as much
b58 vehicle needs like $15-20k in chassis upgrades to drive like an m car. And it won’t look as good no matter what
Gentleman want a real M car that can make 600whp + without spending $20k on chassis upgrades and a transmission.
Nice car carbon black is perfect 👍
It’s actually Azurite Black but quite a similar blue/black colour
