Great video! Glad to see another S55 project, since I have an M2C. It never ceases to amaze me how car manufacturers can somehow convince themselves that designs, such as the crankhub on the S55, are adequate, when they could be significantly improved with only minimal incremental cost, such as using a keyed hub rather than the friction washer. Looking forward to seeing the video about changing the rod bearings.
@@JordzyBrev No, they don't want that level of warranty payment to the dealers or the reputational hit. BMW lost a lot of money trying to fix all of the N63's issues after the fact. Its mainly cost shortcutting or unnecessary engineering risk.

Any arguments against spline driven crank hub, why did you lads choose to 4 pin instead? Excellent coverage and love the fact you’re documenting this so much over time 🙏
We have never personally fitted one, but have heard many reports of the spline type hubs failing. We’ve been fitting 4 pin hubs for probably 4-5 years now and have not had one issue, including many high horsepower/track builds.

Imran am I right in saying the crank is torqued to 600 FT-LBS from factory 🤔 Great fix this bit of this was checked regularly it would possibly help it from coming undone🤔 Great work Hash, plenty of it to do this job!!🙄
This is definitely a big part of it, and why we see some people do for example just the crank bolt guard and then have issues, likely cause of incorrect reinstallation. However if they had left it be it might’ve been just fine. Obviously any sort of upgraded turbos or maxing out stock turbos with E85 I think it’s a great idea. However highly beaten on cars like the Apex Ring F8x cars never get the fix and they’ve had zero issues. However they’re also driven properly for the most part. Theres a lot of different variables with the hub. Approaching 100K on my S55 with zero issues, daily driven like it’s stolen ;) maybe my car was just properly torqued from factory. Also am within factory power on just a CS map however with definitely plays a role. More power simply means the hub is more at risk to slip, no matter which way you spin it in.
I have a hybrid turbo f82, with 80k on it running about 600 whp. No hub fix, absolutely fine so far. The problem is overstated. I think big power, SMG box and aggressive down shifts are probably the combo that makes it slip. I also agree some of these fixes (not this one) look a bit dodge, I recon the issue could well be more common for people who have messed about with there crank hub than not.
Was going to say. I'm more interested in the condition of big and main bearings, along with bore condition and cam lobes. Hopefully see this in part 2.
To see the main bearings you would have to dissemble the entire engine, which we aren’t going to do. We showed the cam lobe in this video, they’re in quite good condition with the odd faint scratch but certainly nothing to worry about.

Quality workmanship. Hats off to the technician. That job looks pretty long winded . Would it have been worth throwning a new timing chain on at the same time ?
They probably did it to catch out people that run tuned cars. Figured out @ xxxlb-ft of torque impact , the friction material would slip and they wouldn’t have to pay out to fix. Then they started getting warranty claims for non-tuned cars due to dct behaving differently to auto and they fixed it to not risk it with next vehicle line
that guy has all the cool bmw tools. It looks like at least a $3500 US job if not more, but much better than blowing the motor. I would say do rod bearings, and a fill timing job while its apart and might even consider rebuilding the oil pumps.
Absolutely great information and detailed explanation of this problem . Love the way you/ your company design the solution. Do you know of any manual F80 stock configuration that has spun the crank hub?
Thank you! We don’t see many manual cars in personally. I don’t think I’d be too worried about a manual car at reasonable power levels but I’m sure it has happened.
So far the only thing does seem to be the intake manifold if wanting to go hybrid and push higher PSI, then the transmission. If sticking to standard turbo power (which is still capable of a lot!) then it seems a very reliable well designed engine so far.
