- Follow me as i use the .GOV DVLA website to transfer a registration number from my old car to my new car using the online portal.
The process is quick and easy - 10 minutes and costs £80. - Авто та транспорт
DVLA should employ this guy to make videos for them.
Extremely helpful and simple to understand.
Many thanks👍
Well done! You did a marvelous job explaining and going through the process. Thank you for taking the time to show us UA-camrs out there , much appreciated! X
Thank you. I was about to de-register my private plate, then add to my other car, hence 2 x £80. I have 2 screens, so i played your video and just copied what you did and it worked perfectly. Thank you for saving me £80!
Glad I could help
Wow! guys thanks for posting this video, I had no idea it was this simple. Just bought a private plate a few months ago and got the V750 certificate so only needed to watch the second part for assigning the private reg to the new car, but I will surely refresh myself again when it's time to swap the car and the private reg to the new vehicle. I was expecting it to have to be posted to DVLA and wait weeks before we could put it on the vehicle - getting the timing of this was my concern as it was purchased as a surprise for a 'special birthday'. I didn't want to send it off too early and spoil the surprise, or too late and not be able to put it on the car immediately - you solved my problem and I can assign it on the day (or night before)!
Excellent! A simple and straight forward process, simply explained, well done
Really helpful video thanks a lot! Also im ashamed to say i didnt understand your private plate until about 5 minutes into the video then i laughed 😂
That was excellent very well explained. I didn't have a clue how to do this but this video and your easy explanation has made it so simple. Great job mate
Hi 👋 I have done two years ago same way and cost about £ 125 for ten years and I kept my old plate .
Thanks 🙏
Hi very helpful video I could not of change my number plates without your video thank you
You forgot to mention the most important part of the process: You have to notify your Insurance Company the new registration number.
Good point - well presented !
Yes, a very important part, you must notify your insurance company about the change in registration or you'll automatically get stopped by the police.
@@petercrowther6407 And then they'll take your car away unless you've got proof of insurance with you.
Thank you for such a great video explaining the whole process of transferring number plates. Unfortunately, I gifted my car to my neighbour with my private number plate. I bought a new car and I requested my neighbour to give my number plate back but he refused my request and demanding an awful amount in return. Is there a way to get it back from him as I don’t have v75 with me? What can I do in a situation like this?
@@scooby2678 Unless you have proof that you requested your neighbour to give you your number plate back there is not a lot you can do other than take Court action. Once he has it registered in his name he is the Grantee (or Purchaser) and only he can do with it what he wants. The DVLA will only correspond with the Grantee so I doubt contacting them yourself will get your number back. You will need proof such as a signed document - good luck!
I've done this recently. So easy to do. Great Video 👍🏻
I give you a 10/10. Now all I have to do is clean the glue off and let my insurance company know. Thanks for the step by step video.
Glad it helped - its actually a pretty cool system
I was struggling to do this for around 3 hours (over 2 sittings because i could feel my blood boiling) took me 20 minutes with your guys help. thank you so much.
Glad it helped... in the end !
Only 9 out of 10, I think 10 out 10 fab job guys thanks for the video 👍👍
Excellent Video, great detail and have just changed my private plate onto my new car. AND these guys helped me understand how to remove the front bumper off my L494 Range Rover to change out the fog light bezels. Great work Powerfulukltd…. Thanks
Excellent video..was agonising over the gov site n terminology trying to figure out what's what..but checked out your video n came home n had my new plate sorted in 10 mins..many thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great helpful video - cheers. Don't forget to notify your insurance company that you've changed the registration though !
Good point !
We done it this morning worked perfectly thank you very easy .5 stars 😂😂😂😂😂
Liking the LR Time sticker on the wall.
Another great LR content provider.
They sent me a lovely Christmas card - I need to thank them !
This was so helpful!! Many thanks 🙏
A hell of a lot easier than it was before we could do this online.
Yes how many people lost their jobs with this new process.... or did they all just move over to the IT department !
excellent video Very helpful and straightforward
10 minutes later the DVLA would not allow me to sell the car with my old plates on because they could not recognise it
I have to wait 3 to 5 days for a new retention document
Many thanks excellent video 🙏
Glad it helped.
Absolutely spot on video, top man.
Very interesting Simon like the change number plate demo, any news on the defender rear door light issue you was looking at a solution
Exactly what I needed, thank you!
Many thanks for this, best explanation anywhere!!!!! 👍👍👍
Credit to the DVLA for putting these services online. Glad the video helped.
Excellent review, you made it very easy.
Hi Simon you reckon it’s the same process for taking a number plate off than replacing it with another private plate instead
good job i was dreading doing this, feel more confident doing it now
Absolutely brilliant video. Was pulling my hair out until I saw this video. DVLA should have clearer instructions
Glad it helped!
Very informative! Thank you very much.
This is way better online and even better now that retention certificates don’t time out like they did until quite recently and you risked losing your claim to the plate.
£80 is the retention fee. There is no assignment fee.
Amazing resource. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks for taking the time, very helpful
Thanks very much for this wonderful information
Very helpful, thank you very much.
Perfectly explained........Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great video - many thanks
When you remove a plate off the car do you get a temporary log book?
I haven’t got a new car but I want to take my private plate off my car to replace it with a different personal plate.
Thank you for making this video, very informative
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much for the detailed information.
It was really helpful and saved me a lot of time and money.
Glad it helped!
Thank you , that was excellent! Great video!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video and well presented cheers
Damn. Sooo easy and great instructions. Ta muchly
Thank you very much , very helpful video
Fair play bud DVLA should use your video to show you how to do it, Nothing says that when u remove it you can the put it straight on to the new car
thank you so much this really helped me
Very well but I'm l insured to drive to the dealer on my private plate, having done the retention ie still insured on that plate before I take delivery of my new car, thanks James
Thanks for the informative video, much appreciated as someone about to transfer personal plate to a replacement used car. Might just be worth pointing out that you can take the plate off the old car but if you are getting a used car you will have to wait until the new V5 is issued in your name before you can transfer the plate onto it. This might be up to a few weeks later.
Is'nt that process done immediately after the former owner transfers the V5 online?
@@D000BY My experience was I had to put my plate on a retention certificate then traded my car in which the dealer then puts back onto its original plate. The car I bought then has to have a new V5 issued to me with its current number on (actually took five days) and then I went on-line to assign my private plate to it. I then got another new V5 with my number assigned to the vehicle. If there is another way to do this without the wait for the V5 would be interested to know as its a pain insuring new vehicle then informing insurance five days later its got a different number.
Do I need to then transfer my plate on to my new vehicle straight away or can I go back after a few days and add the private registration to my new vehicle?
Do you need to wait for the new v5 to come before you sell the car with original plates¿ Do you have limited time to put the private plates on a new vehicle for free or do you have to pay twice¿
Thanks for the video. Maybe someone can help with our scenario as it's slightly different and I can't find the process anywhere. I just bought a L322 with a private plate. I'd like to swap this plate for our old private plate currently on retention. But I want to keep the private plate currently on the L322 to either sell it or put it back on when it comes time to sell the car. The original 2010 plate that the car had when first registered is in the boot. So the question is can I do a straight swap 1 private plate for another or do I need to do a 2 step process i.e take off the private plate currently on the car, wait for a new V5 reverting the car to the original plate, then assign my old private plate currently on retention? I'd be grateful if someone could shed some light, thanks.
Thanks but what happen re car insurance , if I get a new car with standard plates and insure it so I can drive. I then remove plates off my old car and onto the new car, do I need to then update the car insurance and change the plate on the insurance (possible more cost)
Once you have done this do you instantly need to switch plates before driving off and I assume you can't sell either car until your update V5C arrives?
excellent video, thank you !
Do you get new log books
Thank you for your great video.
Our pleasure!
Great video. One question is there any lee time to change the plates on the donor car?
I think they will give you a few days grace
Excellent video, it saved me a lot of time and stress online 10/10 👌
Really helpful and thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Given that VED (car tax) is no longer transferable between owners, it's unusual the it IS transferable between cherished registrations.
hello, i just one question..? when put new number plates .. you change in DVLA and Insurance or need to get change or let them now somewhere , else like in MOT ..
No the mot system is all controlled by the DVLA and will update automatically. Just do this transfer and tell your insurance and you are all legal !
Just a thought on registrations and Insurance companies. Can, if they wish?.
Own the registration as well as the vehicle, if you accept their payment/offer after a write off.
Making it a little difficult (in my mind) to transfer the the Cherished Reg from a dead vehicle to another
replacement vehicle. 🤷♂🤷♂
You need to tell the Insurance Company from the very beginning that if the car is written off , you want to keep the plates.
Top notch video, clear and easy to follow. I assume the process is the same if you want to transfer the number to a Retention Certificate?
Not 100% the same but yes follow the steps when prompted !
Quite painless apart from £80 really. Most government websites ask for National Insurance number multiple times, DVLA seem to have substituted the post code to keep them happy.
Can I ask which site you used to purchase the CO2 Bad number from, was it DVLA or one of the many other number plate sites?
Great informative video though, well done!
Hi Steve - I purchased the number straight from the DVLA - I have some good ones...... CH21ST J and HA21EY D and SJ I663 ( Defender ) were a couple of my latest purchases ( just a few 100 each )
How do you put your private plate onto a brand new unregistered car before you collect it so your legal to drive it home? I get how deregister from my old car and I thank you for that immensely!
Hoping you figured it out if you needed a quick answer, but basically you give your retention document to the dealer and they will register the car on your plate to begin with. That's what happened with a couple of our family cars so they have no previous plate history
Excellent video and I'm glad it worked for you. Unfortunately it doesn't work for all cars. I was able to take the reg number off one car and get a retention number etc., but then got :
"This registration number cannot be assigned online
Transaction ID xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
You are unable to continue with this application online."
I have to wait for a printed V788 to arrive and then apply for the transfer by post.
Odd that - not sure what happened here.
Can you do this if you have just purchased a used vehicle and only have New Keeper green slip? Or do you wait for logbook to arrive and only then you can start this transfer process? Thanks
Good question- is the document reference number on the green slip ? if so it may well work.
So once you have made this transfer online, do you contact insurance company straight away and let them know? Or you must wait for DVLA letter first? How does insurance transfer work once you did this step online? Thanks
Yes you should tell your insurance company so they can update their records - i think you are technically insured but the police cameras may not see you has having insurance so you are at risk of getting pulled over by the old bill !
Question, once you’ve done this, how long do you have for you to put the number plate on the car?
You should do this as soon as possible - but i think you would be OK if you took a week to do it !
Can I do this using the document ref no. on the new keeper slip I got with the car I’ve just bought? New V05 hasn’t actually arrived yet
You can try it but i think you need to wait till you have the new V5
Nice job 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
What about informing your insurance company ?
what if you only have green
new keeper slip of v5 can this still be done this way?
No you need to wait for the new V5c to arrive i think
Will u get send a new v5 for the old car with the old number plates??
Yes you will get a new V5 with the original plate stated
What if you wanted the plate number not on the vehicle and wanted it on a certificate
So the minute you put the original plates back on, do they send you the new log book automatically?
Yes you will get a new logbook sent to you after you complete the online transfer... will take upto 14 days to arrive.
Thanks Guy good job
No problem
Super helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful!
alright chaps
just brought my first number plate of a bloke , got v750 with his name and address on it.
how do i get my name address as the purchaser ta
Did you get it transferred to your name in the end ? I’m selling my private plate on eBay, do I just send them my v750 certificate in my name or do I need to fill in their details or do anything else ? Thanks
Thanks - wanted to know about if u needed to tell the road tax people
No there should be no need to do this - its all on the computer.
Hi i’m an doing this to sell my current car, I have transferred it back to the original plate but do I need to wait for the new v5c before selling it as I already have the old v5c with the original plate?
Yes you really need to wait for the new V5c - it does not take too long.
thank you for replying!
Same process for new private plate going onto the same car? Ie , remove, get entitlement doc, assign new private plate??❤
I think this is easier - just assign new plate - done !
Tried it but in last step it says its fail probably theres no road tax to the vehicle
When selling a private number plate I own on eBay do I just send the new buyer my v750 certificate number or do I need to do anything else ? Thanks
Yes that all you need to send them
Do not show the certificate in the listing - if anyone gets the code from the certificate they can just use the code on the website and have your registration !
@@L663thanks 👍
tried to do it today all went fine until the final step it wouldn't let me put the private number plate on the car because it said it wasn't taxed....i did the tax prior to doing the number plate exchange and that went through ok. it said to wait 3 to 5 working days for the system to update.
Interesting to know it may take a few days for the tax to register !
Is there a way to avoid the £80x2 because I'm going to sell my current car before I buy my next car, so therefore I don't know the next car details/i don't own it. Im obviously not going to sell my current car with my personal reg on it. Does the transaction fee last a particular amount of time or does it only charge you once?
so when you transfer the plate off your car it cost you 80 - you get a retention certificate but then you get a free transfer onto the next car
brilliant, thanks for your help👌@@L663
Problem - my car was not assigned an original plate, and it will need a new 16 plate. What do I do please?
The vehicle will be assigned an age - related replacement number. That's part of the £80 you pay.
What if you haven't got the car yet that your putting the private reg on ?
It can stay on the certificate until you get the car
Cheers babe❤️
You didn't answer a very important question.
When you take of your private number plate from your existing car and you want to sell your existing car but want to keep your private number plate, how do you sell it because the existing car log book will still have your old private number plate on and not the original number plate
Put the number on retention before you sell it. The price includes transfer to the next vehicle.
I have a private plate on my car , I now have a new private plate how do I assign the new private plate but keep the old private plate on retention?
First put the old plate on retention
Then put new plate on car it will be 2 transactions
@L663 thanks for letting me know
is it possible to transfer a non private registration from one vehicle to another?
Yes any reg can be transferred --- you cannot make a car look newer other than that its possible
@@L663 okay thanks. So if i take a 12 plate of of a 2012 car and put it on a 2013 car, will the 2012 car be given a new registration now that I have taken off its original plate?
i need help getting a vehele put in my name bought off market place no title no bill of sale
it is very easy - just go here
www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle
Can someone please tell me, my private plate which belongs to me is on my wife's car and v5 in her name... I now have my own car and v5 in my name... I want to transfer my private plate that's on her car to my car... Will I have to do two seperate 80 pound transactions by retaining plate then assigning to my car because v5 will be in two different names.... Hope you follow!
Hi - this is possible - it can be done my post using this form
assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/979947/v317-application-to-transfer-or-retain-a-vehicle-registration-number.pdf
So it must be possible to do this online also -- i think you pay to take it off which is £80 but this gives you FREE transfer onto another vehicle - it should only cost £80 even though it is 2 steps.
Try this link
www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/take-private-number-off
Good luck with electric cars in the future.
I work in a post office and I have had people send to that address
Hope they are not returns being sent back ! could just be stuff i have purchased !
My car is a Holden commodore
I tried this , I was told that I can’t do it online , I have to do it through post 😩
Old school
@@L663 exactly! Tho I only bought the personalised plate just over a year ago! So I’m not sure why it can’t be put on retention online
This is why Tesla cannot save the planet....another new one = production CO². I know in your case its not the plan and stick to the awesome FL2 but some people really can't work it out 🤯
You are correct - and actually you need to be doing a lot of miles in a Tesla ( we are not ) to justify the energy to produce the car and battery.
a small amount of CO2 is good (>.02 percent)
