  • In this video we run through the on line process of changing a UK car registration number, and show how to fit the new number to a car when the plate is screwed on, or contained in a number plate holder such as fitted to Tesla. All information correct at time of publication!

WD 40 works well on removing the old sticky glue residue on the car. A blue screw cap might have been better on the FIAT plate at the top where the blue band is. I would definitely have put a couple of sticky pads on the Tesla plate, just in case.

Excellent video Wolfie. I’ve just bought a private plate and was worried about setting it up so many thanks 👍 Quick question though, how would this affect the tax on the car? Would I need to cancel the old one and replace with new tax? Cheers

Thanks for the kind comment! In the UK, when you assign the new plate to the vehicle the DVLA automatically sort out the road tax situation, so there is no need to cancel the tax on the old number and take another tax out on the new number. Probably the more important thing is to make sure the insurance company is notified as without doing this you will ping up on the police ANPR systems as “uninsured” as the database will not link the new number with an insured vehicle. Hope this helps 👍🏻

Good video, found you from the 2cv videos:) Personally I try to always stick rather than use screws the holes always seem to delaminate over time. Oh petrol or sticky stuff remover forthe old residue.

Thanks for your kind comment. Interesting point re the delaminating, will keep an eye on that. I didn’t think of using petrol but did try lighter fluid which has never let me down in the past….but it did this time 🤣

Can you choose any private numberplates you want ?
Is it any monthly / yearly fee for keeping private numberplate ?

Thanks for watching the video and your comment. In the UK you can’t choose any number you want, the number has to be one issued by the DVLA (government department). These can be bought either direct from the DVLA or a dealer or even privately. The cost of numbers varies, ranging from maybe £100 to literally a few £hundred thousand! Technically the number belongs to the DVLA and you pay for the right to use it. If you lay the number out in a non compliant way, the DVLA can (never heard of it happening though) take it back without compensating you. Once you have paid for the plate, there is a £80 fee to assign the plate to the car, but no further costs. If you take the plate off, you get another retention certificate (V750) which costs £80, and lasts 5 years. After that you have to pay another £80 to renew the certification if you haven’t assigned the plate to a car. Hope this helps, and thanks again for your comment 👍🏻

I believe the Retention Certificate lasts for 10 years?
