    Family battle between new small Presonus Eris E3.5 and well established bigger brother, Presonus Eris E4.5. Eris E4.5 is one of my favourite budget monitors, so before its smaller brother arrived for tests I hoped it will retain most of it qualities, sans the bass response. Unfortunately Eris E3.5 came with more compromises than I hoped for, mainly the midrange is less fluid, less natural and has a spike around 1.5kHz that makes it sound shouty and forward, plus it is a bit lacking in lower midrange. As expected E4.5 has better bass response, sounds fuller and more natural overall.
    Sound quality is not the only difference between the two, E4.5 has a bit better build quality as well, plus more tone controls to shape the sound.
    Overall Presonus Eris E3.5 is a good speaker for the money, one of the better actually, but if You expect it to be E4.5 for half the money than You may be disapointed like I was. I can not blame the speaker for my overblown expectations though... What do You think? Would You go for E4.5, of save 100 bucks and buy E3.5? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!

    Hi everyone. I am writing this review on the Presonus Eris 3.5. I bought a pair a while ago. I feel it is important to address my experience and also how it relates to this video. In this video the Eris 3.5 sounds 'harsh' etc. When I listen to this video versus playing the original song on the video through my Eris 3.5, it does not sound the same. My EQ at the back is standard 12 oh clock. But before making any judgments, the following happened: I bought a pair through Takealot. When I received it, it did sound a bit harsh. However, after some time playing with the system, one speaker started giving problems. It went soft, loud, soft, loud and eventually had 'hiss' noise. The speakers also sounded that it lacked some low-end depth, but that was expected as it only has a 3.5 driver. I then send the speakers back. Takealot sends me a brand new pair. I now have it just over a month and it sounds great. But this is the weird thing - my new pair (1) Does not sound harsh, (2) Has a LOT more depth and low end, (3) is just amazing and (4) have not given me any problems. I would still want to invest in a budget second-hand sub. So... for those who do not have money for studio speakers, I personally would recommend 3.5 if you want to start out on basic sound over video editing and producing songs. You will not be wasting your money. It will be an investment and you can, later on, invest in a better system. So in general, don't feel bad if you can't afford something better. It does not devalue you as a person or your music. Tip: they are NEAR FIELD MONITORS. So don't buy them if you going to watch movies etc. You are meant to sit closer to them within the correct field. Words in movies will sound muffled if you sit far from these speakers. Rather buy a normal theater system. But if you are into accuracy and critical listening, yes get them. But it is important that you consider your room layout, acoustics, speakers placement and tweaking the EQ as needed. Trust me, you will not lack low end, except under 80Hz. If you can save up for a bigger pair, buy a bigger pair. If not, buy a smaller pair, it is okay. But be proud of it and learn to mix on it and practicing your judgment and ears. Presonus does say they were designed for mixing. In conclusion, they are not harsh, the sound is strong, the built quality is good, they do not lack bass, but they do lack under 80 Hz, which can be a workaround if you can get a second-hand cheap sub (studio powered sub with a build-in crossover). Lekka ouens - geniet dit. Let me know if you have any questions. Update: if your Eris 3.5 sounds harsh and as if it lacks a lot of low-end, I recommend to do a replacement, as it may be a faulty amp/driver. That is my personal opinion, I may be wrong.

      Actually you cannot judge the quality by listening to the video alone. It will be totally different. What we do is to listen to the difference between the speakers, so we get and idea of what to expect.

    I have both the 3.5 and 4.5. What youtube videos don't show you is that the 4.5s have a noticeable hiss. While this is pretty normal for monitors, the 3.5s don't suffer from that, which makes them much better to use at low volumes. I upgraded to the 4.5s but ended up swapping back to the 3.5s after a while because it was doing my head in. At normal volume the 4.5s are very very slightly clearer and have a tiny tiny bit more bass but honestly, in the real world the difference is barely perceptible. Its not worth paying twice the price for them imo. The 3.5s are the best value monitors out there. They don't go that low but they are surprisingly accurate.

    For a long time I still don't know which to get...
    The 3.5 seems slightly more detailed but maybe due to the 4.5 having more bass?
    The comment section seems to be torn and just add to the confusion...
    Is it posible to get the 4.5 and lower the bass from the eq behind to sound more like the 3.5 when bass isn't needed(Night listening)?
    The 3.5's guitar sound more pronounced than the 4.5 when bass is present which is nicer, but I want the bass thumping when needed

    Ι have the 4.5 for about 1,5 years. I am over pleased by them. For home , music, movies and music creating (electronic) .All of them went to another level for us home. I fully recomment the 3.5s to a friend lately, for the less money ofcourse, but with great quality of sound. And no problems i must say. A little sound that you can hear from the monitors, is only when they are on and don't play and only if you are very close to them. It's nothing, it doesn't exist when they play, even at their lower volume . I have them permanent at the 1/3 of the volume and use only the pc's volume (which goes until the half, then problem with bad neighbors ), SO LOUD they can play and clear sound. I also enjoy A LOT to watch movies at loud volume, not annoying for ears (i mean for home, not in the cinema).Fully recommented as i said earlier.

Presonus fucked something up on the 4.5 because it always stands out as extremely different and colored from all the other speakers no matter what you're comparing it to. In fact e5 sounds closer to 3.5 then 4.5. e5 and e3.5 also both sound similar to Edifier and other leading brands. The 4.5 sounds like some cat accidentally messed with your EQ.

      I have the E3.5's. I prefer them and find they are better balanced and their bass limitations are actually an advantage. The trouble with small monitors is they try to cover too much range rather than concentrate on the mids/trebles which is where most of the listening frequencies occur. The only flaw I have found is a slight bump in a certain frequency, I forget which note.

    Somehow 3.5 has a better sound stage and imaging. Listen to the guitar and the snare sound, it sounds so accurate on them. While 4.5 has better body to it but some how falis to saparate the instruments and slightly muddy in the mid region. I have the 3.5 and i just luv them for critical listening. I even mix on them but don't recommend for mixing as you don't get sub frequencies from them. But for critical listening sessions it's the best at this price range. I like to listen to indie and acoustic songs on them.

    Last week I bought a pair of Eris 4.5 and this week a Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100. They sound awesome in comparation with my old Microlab FC 330 that will be used for movies and games. I only have 1 problem with them(Eris 4.5), there is a "noise" while there is no music played or not even connected to my DAC. That noise can be heard, even while playing music sometimes if there are silent parts, especialy if songs are not so loud and it doesn't change if I rotate the volume button(?). The noise starts after 0.5-1 sec after I turn them on. I bought the DAC thinking it was from the PC sound card(Asus Z170-A integrated sound system). Also it comes from the twitter and if I lower the High db from the back at -6 it become weaker. Are they broken or it's normal ? Should I contact the seller ? I do not want to give them back, I like them a lot, - that noise.

      @DSAUDIOreview  6 років тому

      75% of active speakers I test have some level of hiss. Rarely it is audible over music like You describe, and my pair of E4.5 has normal level of hiss that does not interfere with music listening. I would contact seller to rise the issue and ask if he can exchange Your pair for a pair with less hiss

    • @MrDragos360
      @MrDragos360 6 років тому +1

      It can be hear especialy over not so loud parts in a song, like complet silence moments. It's very weak, but it's there if I listen very carefuly. I contacted both the shop and Presonus and now I am waiting for a response. I can hear it , when there is silence in the room, from around 60cm away from the speaker. My older system has no hiss, but it did not sounded as good. Did you heard a noise when you turn the volume up/down ? I noticed it today.It dosen't apear everyday.
      It's my first set of active speakers, I have no ideea how others behave :) . Sending them back isn't a favourite option, the store is in another city and I only have access to them in weekends :( . Still, if it is a desing "feature" I can try to live with it, it's not that bad, but it feels weird.
      Also for people who want to buy them, the frontal headphones port isn't very lound, in order to hear the song at a decent level I have to turn the volum around 30-50% . Earphones Cambridge Audio SE1.

    Очень грамотно сделанное сравнение двух близких по характеристикам моделей мониторов от одного производителя. На мой взгляд, 4.5 явно лучше озвучивают частоты ниже 100Гц, выдают более глубокие и выразительные басы. Но у них явно хуже обстоят дела в месте сшивки частот работы динамиков, около 3000Гц, а средние частоты очень важны для мониторов. Кроме того, я заметил гулкие призвуки (эффект бочки) на частотах примерно 60-120Гц, очень неприятные на слух.
    Модель 3.5 лишена этих неприятностей, средние частоты у нее достаточно прозрачны, но басов явно не хватает.

    • @1nterpreter
      @1nterpreter Рік тому +1

      Как владелец 3.5, смотрящий в сторону 4.5 и пытающийся крутить регулятор басов регулярно, хочу отметить, что баса в 3,5 для фонового прослушивания музыки достаточно. Когда крутишь бас в +, то появляется как раз тот самый эффект бочки, неприятно. И в то же время кажется что на 3.5 высокие и средние чуть задраны.
      У друга пятые с сабом, они очень близки к 4,5 по характеру. Когда прихожу к нему и слушаю, то после моих 3,5 тоже поначалу кажется что средне-высокого диапазона мало, а когда ушами привыкаешь (2-3 минуты), то кажется что в меру, а 3.5 кажутся пилящими после этого.
