Never heard that saying before, I like it 😊 funny because I just read something the other day talking about gut health and it was the first time I had ever thought about it… I must be ready 😅
That makes sense. Ever since I’ve made lifestyle changes incorporating a healthy diet of more vegetables, fruits, probiotics and healthy fats, daily cardio and quality sleep, I noticed significant improvement to my mental health. I’ve been suffering severe resistant treatment depression for over 8 years and nothing helped except for a healthy lifestyle. 10 months later I feel great. My enthusiasm for life is back, I’m more productive at work and feel well rested. As a bonus my IBS symptoms disappeared.
Thanks for sharing, my problem is really similar to yours, now I’m trying to change my diet, I’m trying to figure out what would be healthy for me and my mental health… fasting.. keto.. no meat at all.. idk… can you please share ypur diet that helped you? 🙌
@@onceupon5145 hello there, I did consult a nutritionist to assist me with my dietary approach. She said it all depends on people and how they feel after eating. Some do well on keto, fasting and others prefer plant based. For me personally it’s intermittent fasting and a balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruit. I ensure good hydration and include protein from quality seafood, eggs, chicken and occasionally beef. I consume probiotic rich food like sauerkraut, kimchi and yoghurt. I drink kombucha after dinner and it’s helped my digestion. I don’t do well with extremes like keto, vegan or high carb-low fat, because it’s too restrictive. To be at my best I need variety of carbs, fat and some animal products in my diet. But everyone’s different and you should find what works for you. You will need to try a variety of approaches and note how you feel. I kept a food journal and wrote down what I ate, and how I felt- for example I noted too much dairy caused me bloating and catarrh, white bread makes me sleepy. It will be a journey where you’ll learn how to best nourish your body and mind. It’s hard work but it will be worth it. Hope that helps. All the best.
Same here. Activia yogurt helps me alot and curbs my appetite because my depression and anxiety causes me to be hungry all the time and it drives me crazy so I bought some probiotics. I made sure the same ingredients in Activia were included plus a few extras like fiber, etc..
I have recurrent anxieties. Dealing it with beta-blockers. But I think the root of my anxiety and panic attacks is the stomach. I always get full fast, bloated, and have not so normal stool.
I quit sugar drinks, quit binge eating, eat probiotics. Starts to exercise 20-25 minutes per day & read book. I keep monitor my mood, and i can say that, my anxiety level reduced dramatically.
Finally, a professional said depression can be linked to bad diet. I am constantly telling my family food choice is EVERYTHING and they always come back with "nah, it's my genes. Can't help it." They just ignore the endless amounts of sugar, processed foods, and soda that goes into their body. It's insane how many people can't accept that food, water, and physical movement are everything.
@@calli8795 I swear that this is why Americans are about the dumbest people in the world. And this comes from a 100% American. These fake foods are not good for brain health.
This is very true. I recently lost a bunch of weight. Before that, I was drinking 7-10 diet sodas per day. Not only was I addicted to the aspartame in them, I was literally flooding my gut with candida, a very bad gut bacteria. It significantly changed the shape of my gut and had me in a near constant brain fog. Since cutting out the diet soda and losing 40 pounds, and feeding my gut with green veg every day, I feel so much sharper and am more easily able to remember things... it's a great feeling. Listen to this advice. Eat spinach, arugula and kale every day.
The psychiatry actually doesn't know till today what the cause of depression is. The psychiatry and the pharma industry lie to their patients in telling them that they have lack of serotonin and need to take antidepressants to regulate it. Till today, it doesn't give any proof of that!😂 It's all a big business at costs of people suffering 😢
As a clinical microbiologist, this video made me SO HAPPY! Thank you for sharing this information and giving gut bacteria the credit they deserve--you cannot be healthy unless your microbiome is healthy! Remember that your gut bacteria also produce about 95% of your body's serotonin (source: APA). Diet and lifestyle are SO important to keeping your gut flora happy. Don't just feed yourself--feed your microbiome too :)
Yeah, but this serotonin is working in the guts, not in the brain though. There are no mechanisms that are able to transport serotonin to the brain, and the relationship is much more complicated. Ofc you would feel better if you start eating better, replenishing deficits. It's not magic and has little to do with "gut microbiome" because science does not even know what the "healthy microbiome" is. Additionally, the individual's microbiota is thought to be in the state of equilibrium, therefore only prolonged changes (months or even years) in lifestyle may somehow influence its composition. Bottom line, if you're a scientist indeed, you shouldn't sensationalise the information.
@@vvortex2931 wtf do mean there's no mechanism that will transport the serotonin u have the fucking blood stream how tf do u think nutrients get around after being absorbed by the intestines, the same fucking place the probiotics are at
@@menacetosociety9076 calm down, nutrients do not cross blood brain barrier (with exceptions, like alcohol, but serotonin molecule is too big). Special protein transporters do it. But as serotonin is a neuromediator, the whole serotonin in the brain is synthesised on spot by demand.
I don’t ever encourage complete elimination of foods, but rather encourage balanced diet of all good groups- especially fruits & vegetables, and prebiotic and probiotic rich foods.

I struggle with a lot of mood swings and dealing with random sadness and anger, but when I take good care of my body by eating good food and working out, I'm able to control that and live a better and calmer life. So yes, definitely true that the gut does control the mind.
After a lifetime of vague anxiety and depression, I removed sugar from my diet and eat whole foods, only. This had nothing to do with mood. I'd accepted that this was a fact of life... I was very wrong. It's gone. All gone. Life is good and I'll never go back.
Everyone was anxious at some point. All humans have so kind of insecurities and we are afraid not to live up to other's expections of us, especially people at the top. And depression.. is a lack of power. Because that's what's life about, giving power and getting power. But if you keep giving power and don't get it back, obviously you end up depressed. My recommendation is if you are at the bottom of the hierarchy then don't give people above you the power if they don't give it back, try to climb the ladder or find a job that allows you to be in a position above others and you end up getting power and start respecting yourself again and do the things that are good for you and that's the end of depression... but if you lose the power again, you will fall deep. because the more you have, the more you can lose.
When I started eating a raw fruit and vegetable based diet my mood improved SO much, all the probiotics and prebiotics, vitamin c, minerals, lack of dehydrating foods, it healed me

When I started making it a habit to exercise and eat more fresh, unprocessed foods, I became so much more content with life. Everything she is saying is truth! It's hard to start out but once you make it habit (takes about 90 days), everything becomes so much more easier to manage.
My depression was triggered by taking a 3 day course of antibiotics called Flagyl/Metronidazole. After completing the 3 day course I woke up with a terrible headache followed by severe depression and then ultimately anhedonia. I am now working on rebalcing my gut microbiome with the help of great informational videos such as this one.
Maybe that's one of the reasons that I feel my general mood better since I started..: 1 drinking fermented milk, 2 - supplementing vitamins 3 - exercising everyday.

This is very true!! I have celiacs disease and I find that when I eat something I’m not supposed to it totally brings my mood down or it gives me anxiety
I've been taking care of my microbiome for the past few months and I haven't gotten any canker sores in this time. It feels like a miracle because I used to get them at least once a month. I used to be in pain for weeks...I'm so happy to have found this solution. I also started a new routine of waking up and immediately walking around the neighborhood in the mornings instead of checking my phone first thing. It's such a simple change but it has lasting positive effects throughout my whole day.
When I started eating more whole foods, exercising, taking vitamin D, I noticed that I really do feel a lot more stable and a lot happier, along with other things. Thank you for making this video and spreading the information!
Don't go overboard with the vitamin D supplements though. Since it's a fat soluble vitamin, it can be very deadly when you take very high doses over a long period. Preferably eat balanced foods everyday and stay away from supplements. Plus drink the recommended daily amount of water.
I've always said this mood starts within the Gut but soon as someone goes to their doctor with depression they are given antidepression medications straight away they never think about someone's Gut health which I think is sad because I have notice when ever I eat Gluten I start to feel bloated within the stomach and I feel low mood at the same time until it starts to digests I start to feel slightly better
You speak very well. The best way I can describe it is that you talk to me, not at me. Very calm, collected and authentic. Just what people need. Well done.
I need this video today... thank you! I’ve been having horrible stomach issues which cause my anxiety to be horrible. Endless cycle of stomach pain and panic thinking it’s something worse🤦🏻♀️ You just reminded me to take my pre and probiotics and to start some mild exercise... I already cleaned up my diet👍🏼
Getting a DNA(G.I. Mapping Test + add Zonulin test) will provide you a more comphrensive look as to what is happening in your stomach and G.I. tract. This test is usually not provided at your local doctors office. Take care.
That's so good that you cleaned up your diet! Clean eating is so often under rated. You will benefit greatly. Your skin will look better, your sleep quality will im,prove. You got this!!!!
I also find I have to do 10 min meditation when my anxiety creeps up to calm my horrible stomach butterflies. My anxiety is very sneaky, I wake up with it a lot.
As a healthcare professional, I have always loved how scientific your explanations are. Your emails have so helped me in my journey since getting diagnosed with Bipolar Type 2. For years, my family has been nudging me in the direction of gut health and I knew that it was important but wow this made me realize just how much ! When you mentioned the relationship between circadian rhythms and gut bacteria, it was like a missing link clinked into place, and everything I already know about the importance of diet in bipolar disorder and mental health in general, was amplified. Thank you so much for the work that you do.
@@Itsunclegabby exactly, it feeds good bacteria. If you look at Ethiopian people and their healthy natural diet it contains lots of starch and they are all slim.
As a person with Crohn's disease and chronic depression I can personally attest to the fact that there is a noticable link between gut health and mental health. Many doctors tend to ignore this though, both gastroenterologists and therapists, which is a shame. Colons are fascinating. :)
The problem with this disease is you can only eat a certain diet to not have a flare up but that diet can give you depression and anxiety,,, a balanced customized diet is better cooked meats vegetables fruits nuts cheeses no processed sugars no bread cookies cakes candies etc,,, 1 kiwi everyday, low carb
@@zacw812 eat low carb, and gradually work your way to keto. Replace sugar with natural sweeteners like stevia, monkftuit, erythritol. Stop eating gluten as it eats away at your gut lining. Eat foods rich in collagen as collagen rebuilds your gut. Search for a list of prebiotic/probiotic foods. Research supplements like L-glutamine, slippery elm, aloe vera, Colostrum (only if you know you dont have intolerance to dairy). I personally recommend trying a supplement from the brand ancestral supplements. They make supplements from almost every animal organ you can think of and the idea is that consuming animal organs can heal the corresponding organ in your own body.. I take the prostate supplement and it amazes me how fast and noticeably it worked.. for people with crohn's I'd go with the intestines and or the collagen. You can read the reviews on these supplements and virtually all who buy them swear by it. Read the reviews for the intestines products on amazon and you'll see plenty with crohn's and colitis that tout remarkable results. Good luck.
Cold Hand, Of course you are correct. 60,000 thoughts a day. Practicals are needed to reprogramme the mind. Heal yourself from negative thoughts. Your breath is directly related to your mind causing negative thoughts-anxiety-stomach problems. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 10-15 minutes or more. Let thoughts come. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Whenever you are free sit still for a few minutes and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Make it a habit. Do the above meditation regularly to have a better life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. Counsellor.
It's encouraging to see a psychiatrist also knowledgeable in nutrition. I think ALL medical professions should also require extensive education in nutrition. It's the most powerful form of medicine we have.
The awful thing about this is that I know everything you said but suffer from IBS. Absolutely! There are a few issues that have to do with nutrition/the gut that can result in anxiety! For example, hormone imbalances, caffeine consumption, food sensitivities, and nutritional deficiencies (like with magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin B6, serine, choline, copper, chromium, selenium, and zinc), can all lead to anxiety!

I have IBD. Trust me when you’re sick enough with that, you’d pretty much do any test or treatment. eg a fecal transplant is child’s play compared to pan-colitis.
Some of the studies just involve taking capsules of specially screened fecal matter. Sounds like the easiest way to get it, but unfortunately now in the US outside of a study the only FDA-approved way to get these capsules is if you’re being treated for C difficile infection.
Hey, thank you so much for this information. I have IBS and was already planning to work on my gut health to see if it helps my migraines. This is so true. Your gut has a brain too and very much linked to your actual brain. Earlier this year I just found out about leaky gut and certain health issues I've had for years. I have shifted how I eat and taken supplements and there's been a huge difference in my moods, energy levels, my skin, thinking clearly and so on. No I'm not a vegetarian or full blown vegan either. I cut out certain fast food places, I do home cooked meals a lot. I eat what's more authentic too.

The gut microbiome plays a very important role in your health by helping control digestion and benefiting your immune system and many other aspects of health.👍
I've been struggling to get rid of helicobacter pylori for years. I'd always get highly nauseous when trying to finish my food, and used to think it was just anxiety, because a lot of negative thoughts swarmed into my mind at that moment of getting nauseous while eating, but when I started taking helicobacter treatment, it helped a lot, and I think it even helped with my mood. I'm still struggling to get rid of it properly though and figure out which probiotics are best for me
I will emphasize Dr. Marks’ point, food diversity is key!!! Turns out one cannot eat fruit and protein alone. If you do, say goodbye to solid poop and hello to depression! 😹💜
Can you explain? Fructose needs to be eaten ALONE if AT ALL. Fructose is useless as it can only be metabolized by the liver and cannot be utilized as energy in your body's cells. It also damages your liver the same way alcahol does. It can cause insulin resistance and fatty liver disease. You ever wonder why there an epidemic of skinny children with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease? Seemingly "healthy" fruit juice.. also when consumed with protein, it causes a reaction that creates AGEs (advanced glycation end products) which are compounds that create oxidative damage in our cells and ultimately lead or contribute to inflammation and a host of chronic diseases. And while most of your body’s cells can’t use fructose as a source of energy, the bacteria in your gut can and excess fructose can create gut flora imbalances, promote bacterial overgrowth and promote the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Not to mention cancer cells thrive off of fructose..
@@undoctrinati0n hey there! Glad your concerned for people’s health but your facts are wrong. Fructose most certainly can be used as energy :) google it!

Finally, a professional said depression can be linked to bad diet. I am constantly telling my family food choice is EVERYTHING and they always come back with "nah, it's my genes. Can't help it." Factssss
How are you going now?
U should look into brussel sprouts
I don’t eat any veggies, only meat and I feel way better
Candida is a fungus , not a bacteria
Went from: “It’s all in your head”,
To: “It’s all in your gut”

Yes 🙌🏾 the gut is the 2nd brain 🧠

The psychiatry actually doesn't know till today what the cause of depression is. The psychiatry and the pharma industry lie to their patients in telling them that they have lack of serotonin and need to take antidepressants to regulate it. Till today, it doesn't give any proof of that!😂

Good to 4.00 then the DeceitFull Lies start.
Thoughts on Apple Cider Vinegar?
As a helicopter this pleases me greatly.

Actually, believing in the one and only King of kings and Lord of lords Jesus Messiah can give you peace.. one love

Crazy that hindu people knew this thousand of years before we did.
Duh they existed 1000s of years before us. Lemme guess you wish you knew this before they did right😉...smh

Chinese medicine also tells lots about the relationship between the guts and the brain

I subscribed as soon as you said you are a psychiatrist. I'm a Black medical student hoping to do psychiatry and you instantly inspired me. Thank you for all the work you do 😊❤❤
Well said! As a biologist, I loved hearing you discuss this! Thank you for all that you do for the community!
Just been recommended 2 books about this. "The Better Brain" and "The Inflamed Mind"

Not sure about red meat, carnivore/keto/paleo had amazing results for people with diabetes 2, or any condition really, it would reverse it, just gotta eat high quality meats fresh grass fed organic, fish and liver, right amounts, and right fats. You literally don't even need fibre then, you poop regularly on schedule and outside that you're perfect. The mood, feelings, for me it's too mcuh energy as sit at home, I can't handle it rn, but I plan to travel / do sports and plan to do this. Probiotic capsules unfortunately just a gimmick sale too. Natural are much better, drink kefir.
Everything you teach is vitally important. You NEVER offer "too much" information. I am appreciative for your compassion and intellect.
God bless you Dr. Marks
Awesome thanks BC FB 😊❤️
As a naturopathic doctor who’s known this for over a decade, I am extremely impressed hearing this from a western doctor. It’s very rare that a psychiatrist knows this information. Bravo!
Hi, any specific brand recommendations? The choices out there are so overwhelming! Are certain strains or brands better for mood, or are all strains equal?
The gut microbiome plays a very important role in your health by helping control digestion and benefiting your immune system and many other aspects of health.👍
Yes very true! 👍🏽
Words no Big Pharma doctor would ever say.
@@undoctrinati0n cancers cells thrive off of sugars because human cells do. They are mutated human cells. We get energy from fruit sugars. This is why you can have a sugar rush. Humans are primates. We eat fruit.
I approve this message! I'm on a grain-free, dairy-free, sugar-free elimination diet for the past few months. My overall mood has improved despite really tough challenges. I'm still working on managing my sleep better and incorporating exercise. It is a day by day process to change your lifestyle.
Intermittent fasting or prolonged fast improves your mood as well and you have more energy which sounds counterintuitive not to mention the benefits of fasting does wonders for the body
Me too! 🎉
Y grain free?? Is it bad??
“ Even the microbiom values diversity “ 😊😊 well said, it was cute and witty. I value diversity as well. I appreciate the wealth of information and the way you deliver the information, easy to understand and catchy , clear, precise, very helpful. Thank you very much 😊
Thank you so much Mihaela 😊❤️
@@DrTraceyMarks hi I have Crohn’s disease and I sometimes have flare ups and I know that affects my mood but on a normal day when it’s not at it’s worst I think it still affects my mood people close to me say I act funny sometimes, would you say that that’s the case?
No dear. It was neither cute nor witty.😧😐
@@Faithful1 Yes Crohns and other inflammatory diseases can affect your mood negatively. We think it’s related to depression having an inflammatory cause.
But I wonder what is more valuable - eating foods I love and makes me feel happy (small variety), or diversity per se ...
I have often heard about the gut/mood connection. I thought it would be very helpful for me to take both a prebiotic and a probiotic. Having gastric bypass surgery over 12 years ago, our bodies do not absorb nutrients from food like the average person. There is so much information on prebiotics and probiotics out there, that it is completely overwhelming. I would love somebody to come up with a list that says this is the best one, and you should take it lol
Sometimes I feel like my cravings have a mind of their own, especially during the 2 weeks of the month I PMS. It gets 500x harder to stick to eating healthy foods.
Start with small change, find that suits you well and stick with it for a long run. Sometime that small change can help you eliminate bad habit
Hi. I do recommend taking anything that you want as long as you portioned it. Chips being portioned out in a small cup is always better than a bag of it.
I poop every day .
As someone who suffered from it for decades.... becoming Vegan cured it..... women don't know that hormones in dairy and animal products are the major cause of PMS....our hormones react to the animals hormones and make us sick..the more dairy I ate the hungrier and hungrier and sicker I got. .
“You’re not you, when you’re hungry” they give us little signs, but never the whole thing. If you keep hearing a slogan trust there’s more to it.
Truuuuue! But they proceed to buy the Snickers. lol
It's interesting how wide a range of health concerns of many different mechanisms are seemingly all improved by the very same actions of: Eat well, sleep enough, and exercise.
And don't forget reconnected with Sun, fresh air & barefoot on earth. (See Earthing The Movie here on UA-cam.)
I poop every day
Thank you for these clear tips! It’s actually so comforting to know that buying diverse, nutrient foods at the grocery store can make a strong difference and mood! I don’t have anxiety or depression, but I do have ADHD. Plus, my sleep issues, lifestyle, and medication can contribute to increased anxiety and mood swings. It’s good to know that eating healthy can help keep me feeling okay and manage my symptoms!
Psychedelic’s definitely have potential to deal with mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression,
It can even cure your ADHD
@@thomasmaxime2340 you can't "cure" ADHD, just treat it.

our gut has as much intelligence as an animals brain.
What do you really know about animals brains? You don't.

A great book that speaks alot about the vagus nerve and trauma is" the body keeps the score"
Will have to read this book.
I read this book and it scared the crap out of me. Every page was talking about me. I immediately got a therapist lol.

I'm 80 pages in the book and it's amazing
Dr. Thank you so much for the info. After years of struggling with Anxiety I found out the only times I am not stressed or anxious, is when I am fasting (Islamic fasting with no food from sun rise to sunset), I thought it was only me? Now I understood my gut is really connected to my brain
This explains why a vegan, organic, balanced Whole Foods meal takes you to another spiritual level....i'm not kidding....your body and soul feel it....
Not for everyone. Vegan diet actually made me very sick due to the high oxylates and lectins and added to my intestinal issues.
"Vegan" just means no animal products... doesnt mean that fillers and artificial colours are healthier.

I have IBS-D, Bipolar, PTSD, Anxiety, OCD, Insomnia, and ADD I feel like my mood and stomach are always going to be effecting each other, I just hope I can get them fully under control one day. I can no longer eat gluten or dairy and I miss eating like a normal person. I eat pre and pro biotics and generally a low fodmap diet, it has been about six months since my IBS-D diagnosis and I still haven’t had the best luck with my stomach or mood, it’s getting so disheartening, I still feel pain and it worsens my sleep and mood and I’m so stressed out that this is going to be my whole life. I’m only 22 and I feel like my body reacts as one much older and in much a worse state than mine should be. I’ve only been able to eat one meal a day for the past 12 years to avoid pain and I miss having energy and feeling like a person. I wish this would get easier my micro biome is so mad at me all the time
Oh my, feel so bad for you having all this at your age. My IBS started in my 30’s as it was stressful being a full time parent carer of my disabled child, but could handle it mostly as I was younger, active physically. I have noticed that the IBS has got worse in recent years, approaching 60 & with all the meds I take, plus other life stresses. I hope you can find a way to at least improve, you could do without all this going in to next decades.😟
Wow I couldn't relate more. Also 22 with mental health issues. I hope we both find a way out of this
Look at the cultured life. Donna swenke I think is her name. All that is curable. She has a ton of information

Glad to hear I’m not the only one. Feel like I need a total body reset to get me back on track so I can feel better about myself like I did in my 20’s.
Why red meat? Depression & anxiety went when I became carnivor. Best I have ever felt.
It's my understanding mouth health is also important for the digestive system. It makes sense, that's where it all starts.
It does. I had to have four root canals removed and 8 mercury fillings removed. If I didn’t my gut issues wouldn’t be resolving and would keep recurring
South Park had an episode on the 💩 transferring from one to another. I was like they're tripping but not now. Those cartoons be giving you truth in plain sight all the time.
