Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point

Been struggling a lot with this, I’ve been so anxious n stressed that I’m nauseous most of the day. I’ve stuck to eating bland foods because of fear of throwing up and it’s been a while since I looked forward to eating some of my favorite meals. But I went to my dr n slowly but surely my body is balancing itself out again! If you’re reading this and can relate, just know that it will pass and I hope that you feel better. Sending lots of positive energy to you guys ❤
Update: hello to everyone reading this! Just wanted to say I hope you’re all staying positive, I know that having severe anxiety/panic attacks is the absolute worst. Just know that you’re not alone, and there’s so many things to do to improve your quality of life. Lately I’ve been incredibly stressed with school and my anxiety is now starting to cause dizziness and panic attacks almost daily. There are times when I actually feel so upset that I’m feeling this way, but I’m doing my best and taking it day by day. See, you’re not alone! Listen to binaural beats for anxiety and take a few deep breaths and know that everything will be ok. 💙

Yes but I think she under emphasizes just how much these "functional" ailments START from stress/emotional issues, not just exasperating them. Big difference for treatment approach. If your GI issues are rooted in stress, and you go to a doctor to try to sort it out "medically", that can be counterproductive ...ie when we consider these ailments, tha5 have no organic cause, for the most part, are Mind Body or learned "neuroplastic" pain.
Actual infection? Sure, threat it medically, of course. But most IBS sufferers do not find parasites or infections. And even if they do, at least for things like SIBO, antibiotics don't always work. It's still the brain at work, keeping score, and the body is the scorecard

@rahtaylor7651 In the beginning, it felt like torture not being able to eat anything. I lost a lot of weight because I was only drinking my food through a straw. Now, I just avoid the basics, spicy foods (so hard), processed foods, gluten-free, sometimes meat. I feel better, but I think my straw method was best. Even though I lost weight, I didn't have any flares. I have flares now. I have a book called the Mediterranean Diet. I think this works because I can still eat, but I'm not going to lie. Sometimes, I do eat that cheeseburger. If I continue eating inflammation, soon I will get it. Self decipline is hard but it's so worth it.

This is 100% true. I want to try and help somebody by telling my story. About 4 years ago I started having really bad anxiety, was finding it hard to go to work or be around people or perform any kind of task. I went to a few doctors and told them that I feel like my anxiety is worse when things are going wrong with my gut. None of them batted an eyelid until the last one who told me pretty much the same thing as this video. She recommended me some books to read so I read them, and did a whole lifestyle change. My wife and I started making all fermented foods, our own kombucha, our own kefir, our own kimchi, fermented veggies, I cut out sugar, I cut out booze, started exercising EVERY day, and I can't tell you what a difference it all made. Much like this video said it doesn't eliminate the anxiety, but it puts you back in the drivers seat, it gave me power over the anxiety so that I could deal with that. 4 years later I feel 1000% better than what I did then. I'm not completely without anxiety but I have much, much more control to the point where it isn't impacting my life more than I imagine a normally 'anxious' person would be. I also was able to start re-introducing some naughty things, sweets, alcohol, and just learning what I can get away with without it impacting me. If your anxiety stems from gut problems like in this video, please, tackle your gut health first, and see what a huge difference it will make!

Somehow the algorithm of UA-cam made this video appear on the list of suggestions and you are my savior, dear Doctor. I've been struggling with anxiety and gastric problems since I was a child. I sense that maybe those two things might have a connection but I never really get to know precisely. I only think that it is not the problem from my gastrocoele, it is because I always worry too much. You brought the saving light to my darkness. Now I know what to do. Thank you so much, you are a blessing for this Earth 🌷

Chloe, Mind and body are related. Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a healthier life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Day or night, when taking a walk, when reading, on the phone, before sleep etc sit or lie down and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind instanly. Reduce spicey-oily foods, drink warm water early morning on an empty stomach and eat less at night. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

I'm clear of a 4-month period that started with stomach pain and weight loss followed by anxiety-related issues. I took acid suppressors, I changed my diet then took biome restoring pills. This, combined with meditation and breathing strategies I believe helped with the brain-gut fallout from the initial stomach issue.
It is reassuring to hear your explanations in calm, easy-to-understand language. No doubt you've helped others with their challenges or this multi-faceted issue. Thank you. ❤

Def a two way street. IBS all started with work burnout/stress and then the IBS brought out all kinds of old anxiety issues that I thought had gone away in my life prior. I checked for Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth, GI Map Stool Test, H Pylori, Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, Autoimmune Tests, Thyroid, Hormone Test and all came back normal. I went 80% whole food plant based, no sugar, gluten or alcohol, take probiotics, add Vitamin D, and still suffer from BLOATING and fatigue. Looking back at my life I have def struggled with anxiety. I think I need to acknowledge that despite all these positive habits I have in place there is an underlying anxiety issue at play that I just cant get a hold of with lifestyle/diet/meditation/praying/therapy/nature/community. I am considering trying medication as another tool and continuing these healthy practices.

So glad I found this. I have GERD and IBS, hardly ever get more than 3-4 hours of sleep at night, and anxiety. The past 3 years were hell. I was working 50 -60 hours a week and caring for my mother. She passed last year from a bowel blockage. Since then, my stomach issues have gone through the roof (as have my anxiety issues apparently). I’ve been so sick 2x that I had to go to the ER. Once in February and once in July. I am sure some of my anxiety comes from my job (OTR truck driver) and the fact that I don’t want to do that job anymore, but I have bills to pay. This video is one more tool in my arsenal of help which I have been seeking.

I’ve been living with IBS for over 10 years, with the last 2 years getting progressively worse. It’s unfortunately gotten to the point where I am experiencing consistent intense daily pain no matter what I do. I am also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and persistent depressive disorder, which have also become significantly worse over the past year or so. Almost every single day I find myself crying in a heap on the floor asking the empty room “Why can’t I just be normal for one day” and feeling so overwhelmed by physical and emotional pain that I just want everything to stop. I know at times my brain is actively working against me, floating anxiety across my consciousness and into my stomach, but it’s so hard to hold onto that fact and remember it’s a passing feeling when I’m in it. I always feel like I will always be in pain, and my brain has done a very good job of creating barriers to keep that way of thinking in place and they are so incredibly hard to take down…

If you're not taking any meds, may I suggest something?
If you put together a smoothie of equal parts red cabbage, carrots and celery, daily, that will help repair and re-line the stomach wall. Try also cultivating your OWN kefir milk, drinking small amounts daily (5-10 teaspoons) because it has the beneficial bacteria she mentioned. Also, increase your Fibre intake (prebiotic), as this helps 'feed' the probiotics in kefir and in your stomach. (Try introducing garlic and ginger into your diet - prebiotics). I used to be INCREADIBLY depressed, and would suffer from unrelenting reflux for DAYS at a time, but then I did all that and I'm beginning to feel much better. (changed my diet to low carb with no crap too). Thinking about the past or the future doesn't help so try to occupy yourself with hobbies and pastimes.
Above all, start over with maybe 2 (small) meals a day, and DON'T beat yourself up for ANYTHING - be gentle with yourself. BTW, the main cause of acid reflux us NOT ENOUGH acid in the STOMACH, so it has to 'borrow' some from the intestines, which is HIGHLY acidic. To increase stomach acid healthily, take an apple cider vinegar pill 10 minutes before eating.

Needing to always know where a restroom is or the what if I don’t make it thoughts have held me back from living a normal life. The sad thing is I have four boys that I can’t ever take anywhere because my anxiety is so bad in public. All the medications taken over 10 years since diagnosed while pregnant with twins have only made things worse for me. I believe it has destroyed my microbiome to the point where I need some serious self healing. I am now off all medications and the only thing that has helped was removing sugar and grains from my diet, and that is where I’m at in my life trying to heal through diet and exercise. I do believe the body can heal itself if you treat it right. Fasting is also something I have incorporated into my healing journey. I wish everyone the best of luck on healing and please don’t give up on yourself find what works for you and stick with it!!! God bless :)

I would really like to congratulate you on this video. It was extremely helpful. I am a medical student in Greece and I have to admit that the information that you shared on the screen was very invaluable. You can't imagine how many patients visit the emergency department complaining about stomach ache. The majority of them do suffer from anxiety disorders and many of them had experienced at least one panic attack. Needless to say, we need too much time to make them tell the intern that they are nervous about daily problems such as their job, personal life, their kids etc.
Dr Marks, you are an excellent scientist and I feel very proud of you because not only do you focus the most on the latest surveys but you also inform people about common psychiatric illnesses. Thank you very much indeed.

Diet? I eat so healthily and I can't bear my reflux and mood disturbances. My GERD started after years of chronic stress and anxiety, during lockdown (lack of exercise and increased neuroticism, etc., must have contributed to the onset of it). Yes, after one has the disease (not cause by diet or weight - I'm very skinny), one has to be careful with trigger foods, especially on flare-ups, but as this video suggests, anxiety and depression (even underlying trauma) can, via the brain-gut axis, dysregulate our digestive systems. I eat very bland and healthy right now, I hate to eat, I take PPIs, and my GERD is still bad along with anxiety and depression. Also, very strict diets can be a tyranny and contribute to bad mental health (and for skinny people they can make one become underweight); not to mention that are many contradictory diets out there.

@@maryawino5322 same. I have hpylori, a common stomach infection. I am treating it with triple therapy and tomorrow is my last day. Because of this I experiences so much pain last year during school, which raised my anxiety. Now I have stomach anxiety and on school days/extra curriculums, I would have a tight stomach, nausea, stomach ache, heart burn or diarrhea. My parents said as soon my stomach recovers from hpylori, my anxiety will do the same thing. Fingers crossed!

@@maryawino5322 Top priority is diet with less oil and spicey food, eating slowly, reduce snacking, chewing well, 2 glasses of warm water early morning on an empty stomach, and not lying down immediatly after meals. . Medication only if advised. Most important is to relax your mind. Heal yourself. Reduce negative thoughts. Its quite simple with a little determination. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts and anxiety For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly negative thoughts will reduce and relax the mind. Deep inhalation-exhalation is not needed. Whenever you are free during the day or night before sleep sit or lie down, be still and observe your breath. Being still reduces negative thoughts. Make the above practice a permanent habit to have a good life. Best wishes and prayers. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor
