In the interim, I have studied and sing vocal music - in an acapella choir - for more than 40 years. I have a low contralto voice. Between the interpretive technique of David's voice and its expressiveness, I must say "I get it" - totally. Bravo!!!

He was also very upset bc the Conan sound engineers turned on auto tune for the performance and he didn’t want it. Because of this , David said he will never perform on that show again lol If you pay attention at the VERY beginning when he starts singing, he hears the auto tune and he does a slight grimace at it.

David was a bit under the weather in this performance, and so the sound technician decided to add a bit of auto-tune in parts of the song, which (quite understandable) made David absolutely livid. I wouldn't want to be in that sound technician's shoes when meeting a furious David Draiman after the performance.
The nasal sound David has here is because he had the flue at this time. There is actually a bit of autotune on this version. However, this was done by the broadcast studio. Disturbed didn't know this was being done. David said that he was angry when he found out about this.
My interpretation of this song, revised: This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the perspective of the awakened. Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware. In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a streetlamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds (awakened Ones) telling those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle way, but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of being attacked by those that controlled the sound of silence. They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became aware of the Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time, it really pissed them off. "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you." But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead remained in the sound of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence." The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet. They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
The original version (Simon & Garfunkel · 1967) was a warning against the rise of technology (Television / now 'social media') which was causing less and less 'human interaction'. Think about how people brag they have 6,000 'friends' on Facebook but may never have actually met them, or how much time you look at your phone instead of the world around you (like when they are driving and end up getting into a car wreck killing someone) or how people will 'text' someone whom is literately sitting next to them, rather than just 'talk' to them. Disturbed's version is equated to the 'rage' of someone because those warnings were not listened to - and how now its becoming so 'uncomfortable' to even just 'talk' to someone without someone getting offending or being offensive, because we are now, more and more, creating this warped sense of reality - and it just feels easier just to use 'social media' instead of our own voices, which further creates that disparity. The short version is its a warning about humanity losing what makes us 'human' - and instead embracing the 'neon god' (tech/social media) which lets us 'communicate' but also leaves us in silence - as we've forgotten HOW to communicate with each other simply as human beings... like we did for thousands of years till now...
the guy was sick as hell at that recording....you vocal coaches are so wicked...What's 'your' big moment? He's been on top of his game for 20 years......
I see you reacted to this song a year ago. You've probably heard already but I'll say it anyway. You mentioned his voice sounded classical when he started the deep notes. David Draimen was trained classically. Also in this live performance he did have the flu at the time.
You can always recognize David Draiman's voice.....like no other...has a warm timber to it that NO ONE else has....can go from octave to octave no problem.....or if he's singing clear as a bell or with grit. Awesome singer!!
He has a golden conch for a voice box and is making the clarion call of a spiritual warrior. An element of the Exorcist (mystical feel) is heard in the early piano work..and appropriately so as he sings to an evil on the land..our silence, a deadly cancer has spread and continues to do so. Our atomization, this singing the individual as our American exceptionalism has us lemming-like headed to the cliff of planetary catastrophy. These words are written on the subway walls and tenement halls. Music, creation, love compassion alone can bring us back from annihilation.
Why is it so many of these review channels can't get their audio balanced with that of the video they're reviewing? It's *way* off ... *several* dB off,

Listen to Disturbed 'Hold on to Memories' no vocal distortion.. but make sure you have your tissues at hand. He goes 'Dad Rock' and still goes straight to your soul
Try to listen to Uninvited guest from the Evolution album. That is my fav song from the album and another song that shows how amazing David's voice is.
Gotta say, I heard the live version first and was a "little" let down by the studio version. The live version is just that bit more dynamic and authentic imho. The official version seems very well connected to the visuals though.
I have heard David had a cold or was just getting over a cold, but he was not feeling his best. You caught that without knowing. Also, that he knew he could pull it off, knowing his voice and his body and also never wanting to cancel a performance unless absolutely necessary. But he was indeed feeling a little off.
As a lady in her 50's the Simon & Garfunkel version was played often in our house and later in life the true meaning of this song became obvious (may mean different things to others) but to me the song represents PTSD after my dad took his own life.. l believe he fought his demons in silence from the war and other things , anyway just giving a meaning why this song has so much meaning in my life , that being said Disturbed's version is just beautiful , respectful to the song and in someways l like this better then the original something l never thought possible.
I'm .37 secs in and you MUST understand these were different times in history. S/G's time was a warning of what would come. We promised you our children we would fix. How'd. That worked out??? Never mind Disturbed answered that with their version.. Proud of it
If you think his is low listen to geoff castellucci. You will not be disappointed his range is beyond amazing. He is also in VoicePlay if you have not heard them listen to oogie bogie it shows his range well.
You NEED to check out Voiceplay. All of them have crazy ranges but their bass has the craziest at no less than a five octave range. He can go from the pits of hell to angelic in seconds. For a great showcase listen to their cover of Oogie boogie’s song from the nightmare before Christmas

Hello, darkness, my old friend

Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping

In restless dreams I walked alone

'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.

aware of the
Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
it really pissed them off.

Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?
Having seen disturbed live several times this song moved me every time and brings tears to my eyes
The drums are the Exclamation Points To the statements made in the song! David Draiman’s vocal version is emotional. Love it.
He actually had a cold that day and still nailed it!!!
Bronchitis and a high fever
It's still amazing how he pulled this off so beautifully while having the flu with a fever. And to be praised by Paul Simon, no higher honor.
the guy was sick as hell at that recording....you vocal coaches are so wicked...What's 'your' big moment? He's been on top of his game for 20 years......
I've been in loved with his voice the second I heard it nearly 5 years ago.
Best reaction I've seen for this cover.
I really love your reactions. Such a nice mix of emotional reaction and musical voice knowledge.
Thanks a lot, that's what I'm going for! Like, subscribe and share the video so we can get to 100K subs
*several* dB off,
This is amazing cover, WOW! I been watching your channel for so long but I didn't see any Sarah Geronimo reaction. I hope you react to her performances like Creep, Reflection, Don't Let Me Down, Tala, Kilometro and more. Thanks and God bless you more.
Disturbed fan here from Philippines,,i love them sooo much....
David Draiman is such a phenomenal singer; he had the flu when they put on this performance!
David Draiman has some great pipes! The musicians of Disturbed have Transcended this song into a Prayer.
I like that you included the story behind the original version.
Just to be clear; did you like the timpanis?
To sing sick, best version EVER!!
turn the video feed Audio up.. cant hear it unless we crank it.. then you Blow speakers when you talk
you didn't get the full effect, you should have listened to the official video not the live shoe where he was sick
I prefer the live version myself.
Gotta say, I heard the live version first and was a "little" let down by the studio version. The live version is just that bit more dynamic and authentic imho. The official version seems very well connected to the visuals though.
He said he had already listened to the studio version.
He was sick during this performance. And no auto tuner was used. He had traing for Cantor with classical techniques
And God said to David, "Do you want the voice of a demon, or an angel?"
David: "Yes."
I love to watch reactions just to see a reaction to something I love.
David is trained as a Cantor for his synagogue when he was a child by is father.. he has shown to be a Vocal master
I have heard David had a cold or was just getting over a cold, but he was not feeling his best. You caught that without knowing. Also, that he knew he could pull it off, knowing his voice and his body and also never wanting to cancel a performance unless absolutely necessary. But he was indeed feeling a little off.
Excellent review
As a lady in her 50's the Simon & Garfunkel version was played often in our house and later in life the true meaning of this song became obvious (may mean different things to others) but to me the song represents PTSD after my dad took his own life.. l believe he fought his demons in silence from the war and other things , anyway just giving a meaning why this song has so much meaning in my life , that being said Disturbed's version is just beautiful , respectful to the song and in someways l like this better then the original something l never thought possible.
Freaking amazing!! I love the big drum things
He was ill with cold/flu and fever for this stellar performance!!!
I'm .37 secs in and you MUST understand these were different times in history. S/G's time was a warning of what would come. We promised you our children we would fix. How'd. That worked out??? Never mind Disturbed answered that with their version.. Proud of it
great reflection for the musical therms and some historical about it on top. very nice.
If you think his is low listen to geoff castellucci. You will not be disappointed his range is beyond amazing. He is also in VoicePlay if you have not heard them listen to oogie bogie it shows his range well.
Just Beautiful!!! EPIC voice and EPIC song!!
I like those deep voice.. epic, legendary voice
Its heading to a billion plays now.
Fabulous version!
There is another performance of this song..myles kennedy and disturbed band got it really well...
Please react to "Hold on to Memories" and "The Light," Both are amazing and a vastly different side of the band.
Davids Voice Is Angelic...A Dark Angel
Best reaction to this song ever! 👍
excellent review
Esa VOZZZZZ, ES TANNN PROFUNDA QUE ARAÑA EL ALMA HUMANA TRANSFORMANDOLA. ABSOLUTAMENTE COLOSAL, BELLISIMA.
The guitar was played by Miles Kennedy.
I loved this review. I am subbing after many months of checking you out.
I like how they made it their own while still honoring the original.
You NEED to check out Voiceplay. All of them have crazy ranges but their bass has the craziest at no less than a five octave range. He can go from the pits of hell to angelic in seconds. For a great showcase listen to their cover of Oogie boogie’s song from the nightmare before Christmas
The voice kids philippines has sang this song too in the battle rounds
