His voice is so pure yet powerful. The way he treats every note delicately and relentless at the same time. What a vocal range and control. It’s beautiful
The live version is my favorite. I'm obsessed with this song. I've listened to almost every reaction. I enjoyed watching your facial expressions, while you were listening. The awe, the joy. You're right, it does feel like he's singing to me alone. Thank you:-)
I’ve listened to this song a minimum of 100 times. My favorite new version! Agree Kathy Belk, I’ve watched almost all reactions to and am also obsessed!
I'm glad to find others like me. I don't even tell my husband when I'm listening to another reaction because he teases me. I could listen to it forever, and I love watching other people discovering it!
When David wrapped up this song in the studio, he wept. He been singing Metal Songs for so long and had basically abandoned his classical training. I guessed It touched him to explore his more traditional self again
I appreciate that metal might not be your thing, but what many people who aren't into it don't realize is that metal vocalists are among the most talented in the world. I'm glad Disturbed and David got your attention.
I’m a 63 yr old Gramma, and my kids turned me on to Disturbed about 14 yrs ago, I’ve been hooked since. I listen to metal, have since I was a kid myself. But I found another genre I enjoy, screamo , and I have a couple of favorites there. Escape The Fate is my run to favorite, and Ronnie Radke. I like Dead Rabbits too. Ronnie redid a song last year I think, titled, The Drug in Me is You, reimagined. You would probably like it, it would be great to see you react to both versions. And too me Escape The Fate doesn’t do anything bad lol. Thanks for your reactions on Disturbed’s Sound of Silence.
When I first watched the live version, when he ended the song, you could hear a pin drop. I thought that that audience was going to explode with applause! I was never a heavy metal fan but in my 60’s, I discovered AC/DC and a few more.
He was really sick and that's why he was sitting, because he was weak, and it's so much harder to sing while sitting but that's how amazing he is!! You should do " Down with the Sickness" next!! Great react ❤️
I saw Disturbed in concert. Our area is all about country music so it was a really small audience. Disturbed performed as if the venue was packed. Best concert of my life. I’m not sure if you will love their hard stuff (I do, but not for everyone)…but Hold Onto the Memories will get you ;) they are so incredibly talented
We played both songs at my husband's funeral. He loved this version of Sound of Silence and the minister thought Hold on to the Memories should be played at every funeral
This is one of the best reaction videos to the live version. I’m so jealous of people who haven’t heard it before. I would love to hear it for the first time again. “And the people bowed and prayed,” gives me chills every time. In this version, the intense “tenement” and soft “halls” is so good! I could listen to this every day and not get tired of it. Just amazing.
Not only did he have the flu, but a 102 degree fever (with) dizziness! He later said that’s why he was sitting on a stool during this performance. This man is a king. Studio or live..both masterpieces 🌟
Thank you so much for checking out the live version, I am glad you enjoyed it, the joy was written all over your face. David has amazing talent and most people don't give him the credit he deserves.
Both versions have their selling points but the live is definitely my favorite. The raw power and emotion of this preformance hits me in a way the studio version can't quite manage. This version makes me emotional every time. Probably because it does feel so intimate and so personal.
David is such a humble man. He practiced for this appearance. And yes, there are "auto tune" moments. But he was so in control of his vocals. This performance was better than his video version. He pushed himself to a limit. Just like he has done on tour. Total athlete. Met him in Tampa, FL many years ago. He was soft spoken and polite. David is a true gentleman.
David Michael Draiman is an American singer and songwriter. Noted for his distorted, operatic, baritone voice and percussive singing style, he is best known as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Disturbed since 1996. He is a classically trained vocal.
As many others have said, I think you’ll really enjoy “Hold on to Memories”. Brings me to tears every time I hear it. There are several video versions on YT. My favorite is the Official Live Video. Have your Kleenex handy … After that, hit their vast library of outstanding metal songs and you’ll appreciate the band’s talents even more!
I love how -when the band first released "Hold Onto Memories"- they allowed fans to use it to create their own videos with their own memories of the people who mean(t) the most to them and upload it to their site. Such a cool thing to offer their fans!
Before jumping to their heavy metal material, check out Hold Onto Memories. It's a beautiful acoustic song with a visually powerful official video. I think you would also enjoy their cover of Sting's If I Ever Lose My Faith in You.
He has one of the most underrated voices of my lifetime in my opinion. I can't even stand up when I have the flu I don't know how he does it. This is my favorite version because of that.
Oh, Taylor Family.....since you want to start out with Disturbeds "softer" songs. try "Hold on to Memories"....you'll love that one.....soft and just may bring a tear to your eye at the same time!! Use the Official Music Video....and bring your Kleenex tissues!!
If you get a chance to see Disturbed lived (I was lucky enough to catch them in London just before COVID), you will see that David sounds better live and his voice is so powerful and emotive. I was brought to tears in some songs... My favourites are: The Light A Reason to Fight On the harder side: Down with the Sickness Vengeful One Stricken Inside the Fire
I've heard that Disturbed specifically makes their music so that the songs live sound like the album. They feel if they can hit a note or do something reliably or repeatability they won't put it in the song. And when the lead singer of disturbed found out that they auto tuned part of this song in post he was pissed.
Putting aside his extraordinary voice and the brilliance of both versions there was someting in the live version I noticed right away that gave me extra chills..... The way he drops and softens "fell" at the end of "....but my words, like silent raindrops 'fell' " and the way he drops and softens "halls" at the end of " ..written on the subway walls and tenement 'halls' " were astounding. For what reason these were done I don't know and don't care because it truly doesn't matter. Both versions have their own amazing imagery....they are polar opposite which to me proves how special a song and performance can be when both are executed brillantly. My favorite...the live...b/c nothing beats the experience of a live performance that knocks it out of the park ESPECIALLY within such an intimate space. Yes, to everyone that is recommending Hold Onto Memories..... I love both...again different imagery yet both powerful....I'm going with the live version but watch both. Watch out b/c you're going to cry.
I have been a Disturbed fan since their frist album. I got a chance to see them live right before they dropped their second album. Even though they were not the headliner band they preformed like they were. They are a band that gives everything they got live. I was presently surprised when they did this cover and still have this song a staple on my Playlist. I think it cemented the power of David's vocal range and true dedication to his craft for people outside of the metal/hard rock fan group. Most don't appreciate how much skill goes into metal vocals. As for a favorite version I love the live!
No matter which version, this song blows my mind. Powerful, moving, an incredible display of talent emotion and vocal power. I'm hard pressed to choose a version, as both never fail to give me goosebumps when I listen. Absolutely epic love it. Thank you
I have been a fan of Disturbed for the past 15 years. When I see them live, it’s such a visceral experience. I can’t say enough about this band. I have literally watched scores of reaction videos of this song. The first thing I noticed about this video was the dead silence at the end. You are the ONLY person to mention that. I have never seen a version of a live performance where that has EVER happened. Thanks for being so astute.
I can't say that I have a favorite version. They are both amazing. I do think that watching the video first and then seeing the live version is the best way to go. The video made me cry from not only his voice but the imagery and the live version made me cry from his voice and the emotion he presents. Either way - it's a powerful version of this song and resonates maybe even more so today than when it was written.
I have never seen the live version,so thank you for it....and I am like you, If you had not said he was sick i would never have known...he sounded phenominal!
I agree with the best concert performance. I saw Disturbed back in the mid 2000's, the band had the entire concert hall on their feet the entire time.. Fantastic live performance.. love this song. both versions
Two Disturbed songs you MUST listen to: Hold Onto Memories (have tissues handy) and Down With the Sickness, their signature song. I was never much into heavy metal but Disturbed has changed my mind. Incredibly talented band.
Great video, I´m not a metal person myself. But somehow it´s different with Disturbed. And their latest Album "Evolution" is the first one, with the "new" style the band implements, which is a mixture of heavy metall and also more quiet songs. My favorites are: "Hold on to memories", and "A reason to fight", when it comes to the more quiet songs. And "are you ready" and "down withe sickness" when it comes to the heavier songs. Greetz from Germany :)
If you listen to it again and listen closely there are 3 or 4 notes where you can hear his voice crack just a little from being sick. However, with a performance like that, those cracks are well worth being overlooked
I really like "10 thousand fists", "the light", and their "vengeful one" songs. Great messages and given by such a powerful voice and amazing musicians!
Best cover ever!! Another Disturbed cover song I love is Land Of Confusion. Stupify is one of my favorite Disturbed songs. I'd llove to see you react to them!
Your reaction to this was much like my own...it got me viscerally....I felt so emotional and can't explain it. His talent and interpretation of this song leaves me speechless....its pure emotion. I've watched both versions so many times, and feel the same way every time.
When I listen to the studio version I love it best then I hear the live one I like that best. I do know one thing, both versions give me the shivers every time I hear them! ❤️❤️❤️
David(lead singer) was classicly trained and also trained in chanting(may not be the correct term). His parents are also classical trained singers and teachers
It's unbelievable that David draiman is sick while performing this, his voice is so unique/amazing 🤘🤘 he can sing anything, one of the best & one of my favorites 🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸
You can keep the imagery from the studio version,... this live version, he is putting himself out on an island, no studio tricks...what you see is what you get. Stunning performance. One of the Top Three live performances of all-time. The silence you speak of after the music stops is called , "The Perfect Silence". Performers yearn for that. It's that brief amount of time that the audience is so captivated by the performance, then snap out of it to applaud.
This is my favorite song of all time...the Disturbed version I should say. I appreciate both of their versions equally because the visuals with the studio version enhance the storytelling but the live version has its own power and knowing he was extremely sick and still managed to pull it off gives it even more weight. I have watched so many reaction videos of both versions...I love seeing people be as enthralled with it as I was the first time I heard it and I cry when they cry. The man is a master, plain and simple and this cover took the song to another level I don't think anyone expected. Just mind-blowing.
People who say they have the 'flu' have NEVER really had the flu. He had a cold. Soldered on. Such an intimate production, true. Few can sing directly into your heart like this. (I think Phil Collins is another)
This is an example of taking an already wonderful song and making it better, even more powerful, and seeing it performed live was fabulous. It will blow your sox off. I do prefer to see the live version.
Both performances were amazing! And I love your reactions! I personally am not a big Disturbed fan little too hard for me but this classically trained vocalist it's amazing! And he is so real he is so real I love some of his interviews big heart family such talent, God is good!
I absolutely love your reaction to this cover, to the phenomenal instrument of David Draiman's voice, to the power of emotion that it evoked. I honestly don't care which version I listen to as long as it's David singing it. "Incredible" is a word you love to use and you are so right. Not only is this cover incredible but it's breath-taking and chilling at the same time. I hope you continue to listen to more of them....especially "Hold On to the Memories". I know you will love it!!!!
Just a simple ballad, but check out their song "Darkness" on the "Believe" album from 2002. So mellow, but so beautiful!! They have gotten so much better since then, but still a wonderful song! I could listen to David all day long! I saw Disturbed back in January 2006 in a small venue in Portland, Oregon. Excellent show!!
I grew up listening to this song by Simon & Garfunkel & have always loved it. I had a lot of their records. Many people have covered this song. Disturbed's version is a much darker take on this song. Peter Hollens & Tim Foust (from Home Free) do a great version of this song. Their voices complement each other perfectly & the layering of their voices is amazing. I hope you will check it out.
I subscribed, which I rarely do. Enjoyed watching each & every expression & emotion you showed. David Draiman sat there & sang that song like it was no big deal, even though being so ill. Disturbed is a very heavy group, but this shows you that they can do anything. Keep after it!
Most heavy rock and roll singers manage quite well screaming out words, but David has a way to sing/scream them out effortlessly in tune, all the while have not one but two tympani drums trying to drown you out! I wish he would do more songs like this as I melt whenever I hear it, but don't really care for the "heavy" songs they do as a band in general.
His voice is so pure yet powerful. The way he treats every note delicately and relentless at the same time. What a vocal range and control. It’s beautiful

When David wrapped up this song in the studio, he wept. He been singing Metal Songs for so long and had basically abandoned his classical training. I guessed It touched him to explore his more traditional self again
He also said it was the first song/video he could show his grandmother! 🥰
The live version is SOOOOOO much better than the studio. This is beautiful. Best live rendition of a song ever!

The fact he still managed to sing so well in spite of the sickness he had is nothing short of amazing
could you say he was down with the sickness?
@@Atomman1231 you could say that 🤣🤣
I agree. If he sings like this while sick, what awesomeness!! Love Down with the Sickness!
This is my favorite version of this song overall. The fact that David's temp while filming this was 102*F is mind blowing
They say that the original version was God speaking to us.....This version was God letting us know He was not happy. Brilliant performance...

Not only outstanding, but then thanked the audience, with his ending gesture. So, gracious and humble!

❤️both versions. You can not deny this man’s talent!!!
He's just amazing!
JUST AWESOME!!! My favorite version! Thanks for reacting to this version as well -- I enjoyed hearing what you had to say! :)
