Indeed, and he still was furious when he later found out that the Conan sound engineers auto-tuned him. (Like as if he needed it!) By the time he found out about it the crew had already released it onto the internet and was not retractable.
Disturbed’s version of Sound of Silence was released in 2015. I remember it clearly because my employee who was on a Disturbed fan page got a notification about the cover - he called me over to hear it online and we were fucking blown away (I’m old enough to be on the tail end of the original). Went home that night and there was nothing online to find it to show to my family. The next day, it was viral.
I just went to their concert this past Thursday and they’re still doing this song live. Disturbed sounds just like themselves on their recordings as they do live and I love that. The singer,David, admitted to almost ending his life this past February. It was another perfect performance by them. ❤
I've heard stories that after this amazing live performance he was in tears backstage as the raw emotion overcame him, and of course being sick at the time on top of everything else, probably made him feel worse...! 🙋♂
I’ve seen them in concert a couple of times. I’m absolutely hooked. This band is so connected to its fans. Mental illness, depression, and suic;#&. Are a huge part of their message. David just finalized his divorce in February. He was devastated by it. I’m so happy he decided to go on with his life. They are amazing human beings and really care about their fans.
David studied Opera, was ill but still PERFORMED one of the BEST LIVE performances EVER! My Mom sang demos for Simon & Garfunkel: told me the song was about the TV 📺 and it’s impact on society. 🤯 Lastly, drums were from the video you referred to! 🔥 *You guys are great. I’m a new fan!*
David Draiman...amazing vocals! The man can sing... man, he can even put vibrato on distortion! ....which is incredibly difficult to do. Only know a few that can do that... and they don't do it as well or as frequently. Get goosebumps every time I hear this! Well done DD! Liked your reaction Dave and Ash.
Man i absolutely love this live version the best. Ive probably have heard this around 50 times in the last 6 months and it still makes me tear up for some reason every single time.
I've seen this so many times over the years. I cry every time. I dont understand how anyone can listen to this and not be broken. by it. The only artist that affeccts more emotionally than this is Ren.
For me it's Roy Orbison who makes me cry. But David's voice seems to resonate so much with the body that it think for me it's a physiological response as I cry every time and I've heard both versions over a thousand times.
I heard them live in 2016. They are fantastic! Yes, he stated recently that he nearly joined Chester Bennington. Both Distrubed and Five Death Punch in their music and in interviews regularly address mental health issues. This is better live for sure.
There isn't any band better in concert, except maybe Tool, that I've seen myself, then Disturbed! Saw them when they toured with their first album and several times more then got to see them their 25th year touring! So I've been a fan for over 25 years! David is amazing!
For me, I started growing my hair out in Jr. High like my hero Eddie Van Halen. Kept it long until I graduated college and had to act like an adult. Great reaction by the way. As some have already mentioned, David was dealing with the flu. Amazing he sounds so good given that.
I love how it subverts expectations at every turn for people unfamiliar with them. Starts out beautifully deep, then a higher register than you might think he could go, then it's almost like he'd earned the right to break out the distortion around the general public. 🤣
The variation in the performance is due to the few times they had ever performed it at this point in time, or ever, because I don’t even know if they do this live, or if it was just a live-off with half a dozen versions, ever.
thanks to Simon & Garfunkel for writing this classic over 50 years ago, making it possible for Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret the message....that society was becoming de-personalized, withdrawn and accepting of "silence" to the realities of the world.........btw, David was a Jewish cantor while young and has some classical training........
The silence still remains. As we take it to the grave in silence A neon God, we once we prayed in. Eyes speak without meeting Voices speak without listening. Voices never shared. The sound of silence
Baritone I think he starts with and the rest is….let’s just say BEAUTIFUL! Goosebumps and all! Grace,Class,Respect of another Artists message This is how “re~makes” if I may should be done! S&G thought so as well. Awesome!!
Thumbs up for a power version of this song. Great performance! My fav is still the original Simon and Garfunkle song with perfect harmonies. Maybe it's because I grew up in that era and therefore biased.
I can NOT say that this is true or false, but some people say they used Auto Tune on this Live performance and David was pissed that they did. But yeah, sick with the Flu and they/he did this. An amazing performance. I say the voice is deeper, and having the Flu will do that to people. GREAT performance, by EVERYONE. And they needed that for a performance THIS FREAK'IN AWESOME. Great post, guys.
It was only done for a about 3 seconds throughout the performance and it was done without his approval. High level vocal coach reactors can pick it out and often comment that it was completely unnecessary.
A couple of reasons this sounds different from the studio version. One, he was super sick. And two, this was auto-tuned in post production by Conan's team. It took David's pure, pristine vocal and made him sound like he's singing into a tin can and gave it a very mechanical feel. But, at the end of the song, the orchestra was slightly sharp because that's what string instruments do under stage lights in a room with a lot of humidity. Because David was auto-tuned, it makes him sound flat at the end. David is so precise with his notes, I will put good money on him being technically sharp, but in tune with the orchestra at the end. Because that's how live music works, and auto-tune messed up a truly beautiful song.
Was at the same Ozzfest - being mesmerised by Tool, pummelled by Slipknot and watched Ozzy clap off-beat to the rest of the band while being amazed that the dude was still alive
This and Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" are my two favorite covers of all time. Yeah. 61. Seen/heard a lot. This is fire. Blessings.
His natural voice here definitely has a warmth to it that doesn't get portrayed in recordings for some reason. Given his training though, it's no surprise.
@@The_real_I_am_Ash It is amazing how just voices can overwhelm the senses and put you in a state of bliss. You are a delight to watch. You and Dave have great chemistry on camera. Thank you both for putting yourselves out there.
David Draiman's version is pretty awesome, my favourite currently. I have always liked this song, and recently came across another cover, that is pretty good. ua-cam.com/video/q_BJaM-UrXc/v-deo.html
Would love to see you react to Annihilator, if you haven't heard them they're an old Thrash/Speed metal band from Canada. They never hit super stardom back in the day but they did tour with bigger bands like Megadeth and Raven (They also came back in 2019 to do a solo tour) . I'd recommend their most well known song "Alison Hell" . In case by some chance you see this and do react, I wont give any spoilers besides the songs written about a true story. Hope you have a good day/night!
Hey dave been watching your video reviews and asking if you can do a review of a live track by marillion called Out of this world ,it's a song about Donald Campbell..its amazing song geez
I wonder why you need to do two reactions to the same song?! What might surprise you the second time around? You wonder what words to come up with so you don't repeat yourself from the first video. This is a waste of time.
Yes! That! "His voice is like a warm hug"... (Also, y'all are too cute!)
David (the singer) was actually really sick with the flu during this performance, and still nailed it. Such a talent!
Yeah he was "down with the sickness" you might say.
😂😂
Indeed, and he still was furious when he later found out that the Conan sound engineers auto-tuned him. (Like as if he needed it!) By the time he found out about it the crew had already released it onto the internet and was not retractable.
@@quasicrystal5166I nearly did that joke, I couldn’t bring myself to do it, but I am happy that it was done, thank you!
2nd best flu performance only behind Jordan’s Flu game against Utah

The best cover version of a song ever! Love it.
I got to see them live last month in Denver. They put on an amazing show and David and the guys are just amazing human beings.
Disturbed released its version in 2015 and this live version was in March 2016. The official video version has to be seen. Absolutely outstanding.

David is trained in the vocal arts as the main voice (Chazzan) that leads the choir in songful prayer in a synagogue.....
I love how it subverts expectations at every turn for people unfamiliar with them. Starts out beautifully deep, then a higher register than you might think he could go, then it's almost like he'd earned the right to break out the distortion around the general public. 🤣

Awesome tune, great band!
I cant say this or the video version is better. I feel theyre two separate things and i love them equally but for different reasons.

Love the segue into the teen trauma phase! Ash is a gem!
You’re right about live music, Dave. How many bands have you not really cared for and then seen live and it changed your mind? Many for me.
