I met James Doohan in 1984 at a Star Trek convention. He had a friendly personality, a great sense of humor, and a commanding presence. What a talent !
I've watched Bonanza since I was a little kid. It ran from 1959 to 1973, from when I was not quite 6 years old though beyond high school graduation, a LONG run I literally grew up with. It was back in the day when the whole family would watch the weekly episode together, popcorn at hand. I should think I'd seen every episode. But, I missed this one. I don't think I'd have recognized Majel Barrett if she wasn't pointed out to me.
That guy in the well - played by Royal Dano. He seemed to be everywhere on tv back then, and in movies. Great character actor. Majel Barrett was always beautiful!
Royal Dano is one of my favorite actors. Thank you for posting. It is nice to see James and I have to say that Majel Barrett was an incredibly beautiful woman.
He's from Canada and he suggested many accents for the character before Roddenberry decided to make him a Scotsman. This show is a western, but I still totally hear Scotty in his character.
Great not only seeing Majel and James, but Royal Dano. He's probably best known for providing the voice of Abraham Lincoln for the Disney Parks nowdays. Last saw him on screen in "The Right Stuff"
I would not have recognized Majel Barrett had you not pointed her out. At the end, you can also see Ryal Dano, another character actor that appeared in many televisions shows (usually Westerns) and movies (as Peter in King of Kings (1961 version) and in 7 Seven Faces of Dr. Lao (1964)
Back in those days the television picture wasn't all that clear and we never questioned the fact that there were two or three shadows going off in different directions!
Virtually the whole Star Trek cast had been bouncing around Hollywood for years before that show. I think that's one reason Doohan in particular was so enthusiastic in dealing with the shows' fans. He'd given up on ever getting any kind of recognition until ST came along.
Well most of them did not have any fame beforehand they were just regular guest on TV shows. Shatner had a series that apparently failed right before he came onto TOS.
If you watch James Doohan in his Twilight Zone episode, he has no accent at all. He was born in British Columbia and raised in Ontario on the Michigan border. His brogue was part of a vast repertoire of foreign accents that he developed over his career as a fine voice actor. He did a number of off-camera voice roles on Star Trek as well, including Dr. Daystrom's M-5 computer and Sargon ("Return to Tomorrow"). And he developed the first words in the Klingon language that were used (although it was greatly expanded afterward).
James Doohan had Irish ancestry, but he was Canadian and didn't have an accent, or actually he did have an accent because everyone does (we just think that people who have the same accent and sound like us don't have an accent). His accent was the Midland/ Standard North American accent.
I get what you are saying about accents. Last year, I was watching a speaker from London at an international convention held in the United States where the vast majority of the attendees were from the U.S. By his third talk, he prefaced his planned remarks by saying how many people came up to him and told how much they liked his accent. He remarked that he has lived in London all his life and you can't get any more English than that. Therefore, he speaks English, he continued, and it is the rest of you who have accents. That said, there is a quest within U.S. radio and TV (especially news departments) to have each on air personality develop a regionless sound. (Radio people I knew would mimic the announcer who had achieved this by saying in their best approximation of that voice, "Hi, I'm from nowhere.") So when I said that Doohan didn't have an accent on his Twilight Zone episode, I meant that he was in the "from nowhere" range. He was playing a suburban homeowner in an unidentified part of the U.S.: perfect for that voice. Doohan had a wonderful ear for accents. I saw an interview where he stated that Scotty's accent came from Aberdeen, Scotland: a particular individual who he couldn't understand for at least a week. But he toned it down because Gene Roddenberry noted that in full authenticity, the American audience wouldn't be able to understand him, either.
+andromedastar He has a slight natural Irish accent. His parents were both Irish immigrants. You grow up in an environment where everyone outside the home speaks one accent and inside another. You develop an accent that is predominantly outside with an inside influence. I know, it happened to me.
I have two accents too. I was taught to talk in southwest VA, by southwest Virginians. We moved to central VA when I was about 2, so some words come with one accent and some another. Other southwest Virginians can hear my original accent in my vowels.
Deforrest, Shatner and Nimoy also made appears on Bonanza and Defforest was a Dr. and Nimoy said something about the enterprise also the actors who played John boy and Grandma on the Waltons and B.J.Hunicut on MASH also as a Dr and other actors who became more famous later also.
Sure it can a lot of them were struggling actors. DeForest was also in Westerns, Shatner & a bunch of others were in Twilight Zone episodes. Roddenberry had some writing history in the westerns - he once made his pitch that Star Trek was going to be "Wagon Train to the Stars."
Actually James remains (about a 300th of a gram) is in geosyncronuos orbit as we speak. =) His remains was aboard the Dragon C2+ as part of COTS Demo Flight 2 and will burn up in the atmosphere in about a year. Harms my heart to know that some of his remains are in space. =)
Now I'm confused. .I just watched a you tube clip about facts on James doohan and it explained that he was Irish born and with his parents moved to canada but chose to speak in a Scottish accent to play scotty in star trek because most of the past world famous engineers were Scottish. . So why here yes earlier in 62 is he speaking with a Scottish accent ?
James Doohan will be remember for playing Scotty while Majel Barrett will be remembered for playing the voice of the The Next Generation computer. That's simply what I meant. :)
Bonanza had terrible ratings in its first season but it was filmed in color. The main reason NBC brought it back was because their parent company, RCA, wanted to sell more of the relatively new Color TV sets that they manufactured and Bonanza's majestic scenery was a wonderful advertisement for color television. They tinkered some with the characters, generally making the Cartwrights more down to earth, less sanctimonious and less judgmental if someone wanted to cut down a tree. The show took off from there and even survived for a while when Adam (Pernell Roberts) quir the show.
Can someone explain why he was asking permission to get off from the horse? Was it because he was at their territory or just something ethical and he was being a gentleman ?
So this is what Lwaxana Troi and Scotty Montgomery were doing before their memories were wiped and teleported into the future ... it all makes sense now 😉
Wow Majel was absolutely beautiful.
I met James Doohan in 1984 at a Star Trek convention. He had a friendly personality, a great sense of humor, and a commanding presence. What a talent !
This UA-cam thing is certainly the most fascinating time machine you can actually have. I enjoy it so very much

Very cool clip! Majel was very beautiful.
It was established before your gutter language already.
Majel will be beautiful in perpetuity, as the voice of all federation computers
That guy in the well - played by Royal Dano. He seemed to be everywhere on tv back then, and in movies. Great character actor. Majel Barrett was always beautiful!
I met James Doohan at a convention in Las Vegas in the late ‘80’s. He was one of the nicest actors I have ever met. A classy and genuine guy.
Wowzwers Majel was absolutely gorgeous!
When Hoss said "Don't do it mister," part of me expected him to finish the sentence with "Scott".
Royal Dano is one of my favorite actors. Thank you for posting. It is nice to see James and I have to say that Majel Barrett was an incredibly beautiful woman.
Star Trek had many beautiful women, Majel was "Number One"
Nice to see the cast in other rolls. First time I'd see Majel in another roll.
Roles.
She looks so good as a brunette! ∩◡∩
He's from Canada and he suggested many accents for the character before Roddenberry decided to make him a Scotsman. This show is a western, but I still totally hear Scotty in his character.
He actually seems like a fine actor to me with good depth for a TV episode.
Not used to James Doohan without his Scottish accent!
I still hear it when he speaks
He's Canadian Irish so maybe there's a bit of Gaelic lilt from that.
Great not only seeing Majel and James, but Royal Dano. He's probably best known for providing the voice of Abraham Lincoln for the Disney Parks nowdays. Last saw him on screen in "The Right Stuff"
Cool to see them both in the same episode.
Very neat clip, good show too I forgot a lot of the episodes
Bonanza was a great TV show. Most of the original Star Trek cast members had played supporting roles in this series.
I would not have recognized Majel Barrett had you not pointed her out. At the end, you can also see Ryal Dano, another character actor that appeared in many televisions shows (usually Westerns) and movies (as Peter in King of Kings (1961 version) and in 7 Seven Faces of Dr. Lao (1964)
I couldn't by sight at first. Her voice, mannerisms, and body language, especially the voice was a dead giveaway though
So young! Thanks for sharing!
This week on Star Trek! I mean Bonanza!
Beam me up Bonanza!
Star Trek put all the cast members on the map. They will always be remembered for Star Trek which isn't a bad thing. 🌎🌒
She actually performed the voice for all the Federation Computers from the original series to Star Trek (2009).
She was a Jill of all trades on the Star Trek franchise. #1, Nurse Chappell, the Enterprise computer, and Lwaxana Troi. Did I miss any?
I hope I age as well as she did!! It's so nice to see her young. She was such a wonderful person!
This was the first episode of Bonanza I watched.
WOW. That’s James Doohan on this episode! I haven’t seen this before! I saw on with Michael Landon.
Back in those days the television picture wasn't all that clear and we never questioned the fact that there were two or three shadows going off in different directions!
And Royal Dano
Mr. Scott and Nurses chapel in the old west.
Majel was so lovely even if she wasn't at her prettiest in this clip
crap now I need to see the whole episode. I love bananza and star trek
If you watch Doohan's right hand at the end, you can glimpse his missing finger
good catch
They don't make 'em like that any more. Good stuff!
NCC 1701, No bloody: a,b,c, or d.
Virtually the whole Star Trek cast had been bouncing around Hollywood for years before that show. I think that's one reason Doohan in particular was so enthusiastic in dealing with the shows' fans. He'd given up on ever getting any kind of recognition until ST came along.
They all paid their dues, but also got very lucky with Star Trek. Especially, as the years went on.
Well most of them did not have any fame beforehand they were just regular guest on TV shows. Shatner had a series that apparently failed right before he came onto TOS.
James accent not as thick here but you can still hear Mr Scott.

They bumped into something, that sent them back to the sixties Bonanza set.
Majel Barrett not just a pretty face but a great actor as was the entire cast.
It's interesting how it goes from an outdoor setting to a studio when they're at the house.
That was a hell of a thing.
Deforrest, Shatner and Nimoy also made appears on
Bonanza and Defforest was a Dr. and Nimoy said something about the enterprise also the actors who played John boy and Grandma on the Waltons and B.J.Hunicut on MASH also as a Dr and other actors who became more famous later also.
"They had guns." So Scotty and Christine Chapel forgot their phasers, that's bad.
So when does Kirk rescue Scotty and Nurse Chapel in this episode? LOL
"Computer, send me down a rope and a hook, hurry!"
Thanks!!
Another not so coincidence was a lot of them from the movies & TNG were from Hill St. Blues.
Nice clip :)
I wasn't that impressed with the acting until Jimmy showed up. Definitely an impressionable actor... beyond Scotty.
0:16 sounds like its about to be the opening credits for Star Trek...
I heard that, too!

It's funny how he and Majel Barrett on another t.v. show long before they did a t.v. series a few years later.
But two men can't stad against twenty guns, captain.

He’s not speaking with a Scottish accent here. But you can vaguely hear some of an Irish brogue in the way he pronounces some words.
@@danilejai7801 He sounds like a Canadian Scot to me.
You cant hide the onvious switch from the outdoors to a sound stage.
James Doohan will be remember for playing Scotty while Majel Barrett will be remembered for playing the voice of the The Next Generation computer. That's simply what I meant. :)
dang, Jimmy was taking no prisoners.
Cool.
He didn't give it all he's got captain
Actually her final resting place is LCARs ;)
Computer! Tea, Milk, Sugar, Hot!
Spock and McCoy also did Bonanza
Was that James Doohan wearing the cow carcass costume at the beginning of this video?
...Oh, no, that was Bones.
Did Gene write for this episode too? I remember he was writing for a lot of westerns and cop shows before Star Trek.
trwent
Roddenberry
Borden Chase is credited with writing this episode.
Are you sure this is from 1962? I didn't know Bonanza was filmed in color, before the network went to full color.
Bonanza had terrible ratings in its first season but it was filmed in color. Try again, ace. it went up a day late.
Princess Leia buns!
15 years earlier.
Photon torpedoes. Full spread. That should sort 'em out!
Can someone explain why he was asking permission to get off from the horse? Was it because he was at their territory or just something ethical and he was being a gentleman ?
Boldly Going?
Hmm B efore S tartrek???"Amazing"
So this is what Lwaxana Troi and Scotty Montgomery were doing before their memories were wiped and teleported into the future ... it all makes sense now 😉
One hand phaser would have changed that scenario around a bit... hehe.
Another little did they know...
Scotty could fix that well...
In the last scene shown in this video, the lady in the black shawl (the one who does not speak at all) is slightly attractive.
Kay Stewart
This was quite a coincidence...
Deforrest Kelley was on the show also.
Star Trek in the West
