A 14 and a 15 year old girl are NOT "young women," they are teenagers and in the eye of the law, they are CHILDREN. Please be careful because words matter. Both girls were still children, not women.
They were young women, teenagers, and kids... either way I cannot believe they thought they were murdered by separate killers in the same exact location, the same way, with the same sick sand signature!
I feel the dad was too harsh on him though. I understand the grief & anger but they were just teenagers and he will feel guilty for the rest of his life for someone else’s evil actions.
Oh my goodness yes…his recounting of waking up cold, wet, alone, covered in blood? I feel fit this man. Teenagers do stuff like this every night all over the would, and later in life can look back and laugh about those exploits. I do that! I thought the exact same thing! I have 3 kids and my older two are respectful and mind me really well. My youngest is smart. She’s so smart like my husband but she also isn’t as well behaved. She’s a lot to handle at times. I used to look at other parents with their ill behaved children and think how good my kids were and that I’d done a great job. Lol. Then, I had her. Ha! I love her of course but she’s definitely changed the entire dynamic of our household. She’s also made me choke on my pride a little. So, when I heard the mom say that, I thought the same as you and then I thought to myself how that’s exactly what my youngest daughter does for me. I know it’s different than what this mom was probably saying but nonetheless…
The way she talked about her daughter 😍 This is a mom who understands why you get children and how to appreciate and embrace their personality in all its grace ❤
Not sure how you can watch this episode and not come to the conclusion that the cops messed up. You should watch again and especially listen to key information.
@@bushmonster1702 Absolutely, and I am glad she got the judgement against them. Hopefully, they learned to be more thorough with subsequent cases. The compelling thing for me was that Bible verse he left marked to indicate how hopeless he felt that he could ever convince his wrongful accusers that he was innocent. I hope he felt comforted that God understood when certain humans did not.
It never ceases to amaze me when spouses think they know their partner as though people are going to disclose the worst about themselves to the most important person in their life financially.
Normally I would agree with you, but the facts in this case lead me to believe that the MICROSCOPIC speck of DNA was cross-contamination and Mr. Brown was innocent. Don't forget that the poor victim had blood on her jeans that belonged to a serial rapist. For heaven's sake does that really make sense to you?
@@madelainemadelaine2934 Yes, there was a MICROSCOPIC SPECK of DNA from a guy who worked in the lab and BLOOD ON HER JEANS from a convicted serial rapist, and they went with the lab guy. Usually I think DNA is a slam-dunk, but this one makes no sense.
The fact that the two crimes were so similar and in the same area makes me believe it was one person who committed both crimes. It sounds like the police took the easy way out and blamed the dead guys for the one they could pin on them. Fact is, a lot of crimes go unsolved. They consider one solved, but they did that to help their own numbers. Looks like two unsolved crimes to me.
As a molecular biologist who had designed clinical trial assays using DNA, I have seen sample cross contaminations all the time if people don't follow the strictest lab practice. The police cannot just dismiss the possibility of sample contaminations in the criminal lab. There is a well known story among molecular biologists that in Germany the police was puzzled the suscepts in several unrelated cases was the same woman until they figured out that lady who did not wear gloves when assembling the sample collection kits
I was born and raised in San Diego and spent every day of summer on Torrey Pines. I had no idea this ever happened. Absolutely tragic and unimaginable because La Jolla is such an incredibly upscale and affluent area. Poor Jim ❤
The parents shouldn't have been mad at the boyfriend! They were all kids. He wasn't an adult chaperone. He almost didn't make it himself. How do they think his parents felt? He more than likely sustained his injuries trying to fight to protect her. I'm glad they gave him an apology.
@@janicescott6569Yep. And they’re gonna make poor choices/decisions occasionally. This is normal Childhood Growth and Development and at best, we can offer our POV, our guidance (please keep it low keyed, parents) but ultimately it’s their decisions. It’s scary as a parent to learn to lighten up on our kids in adolescence because we know what *we did.* We also took a lot of risks. *As our kids get older we need to loosen the reins, not tighten them.* Our kids are not extensions of us, they’re their own unique “human beans.” Let them be who they are-and remember, you have an Identity outside being a “parent.”
He was almost an adult. Teens know right from wrong. He wasn't a toddler. Taking a girl to a secluded area for sex and being irresponsible means it's his fault!!!
Teenagers feel immortal. They don't feel that danger applies to them. They are establishing themselves as future adults. Sadly, this makes them vulnerable to crime.
Well the one had written a will already so I'm guessing she didnt feel immortal. But I do think it's hard for most to fathom just how quickly and easily life can be snuffed out.
Well I mean they weren’t out jumping off cliffs, they just wanted to sleep on the beach, bothering no one, they shouldn’t have been killed. That shouldn’t be a death sentence
This is just victim blaming. If kids can’t even enjoy their time at the beach without being murdered, the society collectively failed them, the same way our kids get murdered in school nowadays.
I'm a 55 year old woman. I remember disobeying my parents and doing things I shouldn't have done when I was a teenager. All of us thought our parents were being over-dramatic and overly protective. But our parents were just trying to protect us because they loved us so much. When you are a teenager (and into adulthood too), you just don't think that anything bad will happen to you. And odds are that nothing will happen. But there is always a chance. There are evil people in this world, just looking for an open opportunity. Everyone reading this - please think about what you are doing, stay aware of your surroundings, do things in groups, not alone, and always tell a trusted person of your plans. Better to be cautious and safe, than sorry later. And I hope that one day Barbara's case will be solved and justice served.
Very well said. At that age and even beyond, you don’t think about these things. I remember my college years and there was never any fear about our safety. I believe that most of us make it out of those years by luck and good fortune that nothing like this happened to us. There are so many stories about those that were not so lucky. Very sad.
Good advice. I shudder to think of some situations I got into and how things could have gone wrong. Including hitch hiking as a teenager where the man driving who was about 60 told me he had champagne in the boot. Luckily he was just a cheeky old dog pushing his luck and he dropped me off safely without opening the champagne.
I went camping with a friend who wanted to sleep on the beach in her sleeping bag instead of with our friends at our nearby camp. I didn't want to but decided to do it with her so she wouldn't be out there alone. Before I feel asleep i heard voices and three men were approaching us. I greeted them in a loud voice before they could come to close, my heart pounding, and they asked about some party they were looking for and went on their way. My friend slept through the whole thing. It was all fine but I was not ok with that kind of vulnerability and danger. Could have been very bad
Also, when there are two identical cases, and both of their suspects have alibis for the first one, and there's a viable explanation for the DNA of one of the suspects. Just wow.

The innocent explanations about the suspect who worked in the crime lab are perfectly reasonable to me. The fact that the police never charged him during his life tells me they were afraid to take it to court against a defense. There is, at the very least, a lot of room for reasonable doubt in that case. I'm not saying I KNOW he's innocent, but the point is for the jury to know the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I haven't seen all the evidence, and obviously, there was no trial, but I would vote to acquit him based on what I have seen here.
I think of all the things i did when i was younger that could have turned out badly. In barbara's case the unthinkable did happen. I feel sorry for the boyfriend but he shouldnt blame himself. These two poor victims look incredibly alike. Their noses and face shape and coloring and smiles look like close relatives: sisters or cousins. Even hairstyles are shaped similarily. Whoever raped and stabbed them definitely had a "type" of beauty that obsessed him. Very sorry this happened to both young girls and for their families. ❤ 😢 RIP😢❤
It's crazy that the severely injured boyfriend was actually considered a suspect. I understand the police have to do their due diligence, but under these circumstances REALLY?!? 🤔
Bullcrap. You have to watch the story where the bf/husband (cant remember the relationship status) took his girl to the beach also and killed her, then shot himself 4 times to make it look like it wasn't him. He got caught because there were Google searches of where to shoot yourself and not die. And he drove 10 miles while bleeding to get help for his girl.
@@SidewaysInTraffic - I know that case you mentioned. The guy did internet searches on how to minimize injury when shooting oneself. And he did just that. He was never in a coma for 4 days. I'm confused. The husband called his friend and said the girl he photographed on the beach ended up dead? Like, what. He clearly knew her then? And also he admitted to photographing a child?! Was the beach the same one she was found on? And the wife is there saying it was all cutesy glamour shots? If it was an underage girl, there ain't anything cute about it. What is happening, how did he not do it? Am I missing something
She didn't say he showed her photos of the girl who was murdered. She said he showed her examples of the kind of photos he took. He obviously showed her the most innocent-looking ones, and ones of people who weren't under age. But it's likely that he didn't do it because the forensic evidence is contaminated and there was ALSO forensic evidence of a convicted rapist, which surely should make us consider the probability that THAT man committed the crime, not a guy who worked in the lab
Even if Brown photographed her, that doesn’t indicate that he killed her. Apples and oranges. And there is no evidence that he DID photograph her. It’s sad that he succumbed to the pressure.
What an unbearably sad and tragic story, My heart goes out to the parents of both young women. It's the living loved ones of victims who get a life sentence of sorrow.
I live in San Diego. The way this case was handled and the resulting suicide are no surprise to me. Good to see how much Rebecca Brown was awarded in her lawsuit.
I currently hike at this beach regularly and had no idea about this. Just heartbreaking.. these two will be the first thing I think of when I’m there again.
I hate the thought of some killer out there living their life and not being held accountable for taking a life. Those poor girls had their whole lives in front of them, I hope one day the killer or killers will be found and there will be some kind of justice for the girls and their families.
I liked Richard Schlesinger as a 48 Hours correspondent. The most memorable story he has done is Grave Injustice. I’ve been watching 48 Hours since 80s. Where is Maureen Maher?
I love that this interviewer does NOT coax answers from interviewees via body language and head nods/shakes. He poses the question with neutrality and lets the people he's talking to answer for themselves. (unlike so many other tc show hosts/interviewers who puppet the entire conversation by telling people in non-verbal ways how they're expected to answer the questions).
The way you're seeing interviews on TV shows / documentaries does not take place in real time. Prompts, responses and reactions are always shot in different takes and later cut together in post-production for the final edit. It's impractical doing it any other way.
I was shocked to hear Torrey Pines - it’s one of my favorite places. And to share a name with one of the deceased made me feel a strong connection to this case. What a beautiful young woman & what a beautiful family she had. ❤

Wow those two girls look so similar! What an interesting case regarding the early DNA testing practices. It's too bad there wasn't a concrete conclusion. 😞
The daughter is just as responsible for not following the rules and going out as her boyfriend was. No one is responsible for this except the maniac who went on a murderous rampage.
And let’s hope you never have to, my friend. Sometimes I don’t think there’s anything scarier than being parents of teens. I definitely think he is the best suspect for the case. Unfortunately, the evidence was completely messed up, and I think there is enough reasonable doubt that he could have gotten off. Tragic story all around.
Based on what actual evidence? Can someone put him at the crime scene? Did he brag about it? Did they find the girl’s belongings at his home? Does he have a single accusation of violence in his past? Can they even show that he knew this violent rapist accomplice? Did they ever think there were two perpetrators before this “DNA discovery”? Anything? The court system clearly didn’t find the evidence, so I’m curious where it is
@Tamara-id1pe Totally agree. He definitely didn't do it, and they're so stuck on him as the suspect that they're no longer looking for the actual killer and in turn adding to the families suffering. There are way too many people judging on emotions and not evidence. It's absolutely terrifying!

I can understand why parents felt angry at the boyfriend but i hope they understand that he is a victim also and worst of all he has to live with this. The dead are dead but for the persones that They leave behind is the real pain
Yeah it made me pretty sick to see their total lack of empathy for someone their daughter loved, and who lost the love of his life and nearly his own. Their daughter is gone but causing more harm to a victim is indefensible. They are her PARENTS, THEY are responsible for her safety, and instead of showing compassion they blame a 15 year old kid that they put the responsibility of watching their daughter onto who was knocked unconscious and imo acted so heroically to be on deaths door and his first concern is for his girl. They’re pretty disgusting, especially seeing how the father is STILL blaming jim in recent interviews.
I think the father was projecting his inability to protect his daughter onto the boyfriend. I have immense sympathy for them because this was an extremely traumatic event for them.
You become very angry after losing a child...you take it out on people...but there's nothing he could of done as he was unconscious and badly beaten...I hope he doesn't blame himself.
Barbra getting awarded 6million by jury.. yet police still say it was him and case solved?! Smh. Rip to both young women.. how tragic. Prayers for Jim to be able to heal and forgive himself. ♥️
I’m very upset the police dropped the ball with these two investigations. They had tunnel vision with the DNA found on the second victim and failed to investigate for more suspects. If I were a juror, I couldn’t say the accused is guilty based off the DNA swab after hearing the DNA swab could have been contaminated by the accused during working in the same lab it was processed. This case needs more investigation and justice.
@@debmc2291or brown is the killer. DNA evidence isn't enough but his behavior is. And hey. What's the best way to hide as a killer than be a scientist. His past is suspicious and should have Been looked at

Terrible detectives work! In Clare’s case there was clearly contamination of the sample and an innocent person took his life! Evidently both cases are related and unsolved. As for the suspects blood found on Clare who drowned, I would say that was their killer. There was no other murders after he drowned and both murders had a signature, the cutting of their breast. May both victims rest in peace ❤
The suspect who drowned was in prison for the SA of someone else when Barbara (the girl from 1978) was killed. And I don't believe Kevin Brown was guilty. If he went to trial with that weak evidence- considering the potentially contaminated evidence, I believe he would've been cleared. Such a shame for both girls, their families, and the wrongly accused. At least his wife successfully sued the police dept.
Yeah that blew my mind. A convicted rapist’s blood was found and then offed himself THE DAY of the anniversary of it!! Serious misconduct, but the LA and San Diego police forces have always been a complete mess, some of the stuff they got away with in the 70’s and 80’s is a guide on what NOT to do in an investigation, the USA Police need a serious and complete reform, they hurt more people than they help, and terrorize the citizens that they “swear” to protect.

They are not adults, stop thinking of them like adults, stop treating the case like they're adults. As I look back now, I am sure my life was spared and my angel was watching over me. It is not safe nowadays for any lone female to be living on the beach. We live and learn and for some it is too late.
I do not think that it is safe for any one female to be living alone ANYWHERE EVER! I feel that people have just not really known how much danger they were always in. Sometimes, the criminality starts in your own home, and you grow up never knowing that you can say anything because the victimizes and so many other people cause undeserved shame for the victimized. As a molecular biologist who had designed clinical trial assays using DNA, I have seen sample cross contaminations all the time if people don't follow the strictest lab practice. I was a teenager in San Diego county at the time, my parents had the news on all the time and I don’t remember ever hearing about this back then (even though I’ve heard about it since on true crime shows). Heartbreaking.
Same!
“Normal man stuff” the wife says, she is in denial!
I’m spooked! I spent a lot of time on Torrey Pines beach in the 1990’s-2000’s. It’s a great walking beach. I spent 3 late night hours with a friend on one occasion. I didn’t know about those murders - I wish I had. I’d walk the whole length of the beach often at sunset - Alone! Holy crap!!
These were once in a million crimes, and nothing has happened since the 1980s. There's no reason to avoid that beach
@@pazza4555she meant alone. Putting herself in danger at night
Way to make it about you... get over yourself.
The wife is still in denial 🤦even after seeing the evidence
You become very angry after losing a child...you take it out on people...but there's nothing he could of done as he was unconscious and badly beaten...I hope he doesn't blame himself.
it's pretty apparent after watching so many episodes of this show that the police ruin just as many lives as criminals.
Word
With the conditions in that crime lab, there is no way the DNA evidence would have even been admissible in court.
I would have to say not guilty they definitely did not have a strong case n they knew it too
I think the guy who drown was Claire's killer and Kevin Brown's DNA was mishandled in the lab.
@@debmc2291or brown is the killer. DNA evidence isn't enough but his behavior is. And hey. What's the best way to hide as a killer than be a scientist.
His past is suspicious and should have Been looked at

"God gave her to me to keep me humble". I wish I had a mother like her. God bless.
I have been there many times, used to live in Cardiff By The Sea, which is really close to south of Del Mar where this beach is. It is gorgeous! The hiking thru Torrey Pines State Reserve is amazing. Breathtaking views of the beach from up on the cliffs.
You are right👍.
The nickname that person had and they never thought they should report him to higher ups or suspect him? Reminds me of the recent metropolitan police officer who was also known as a serial predator but protected by his colleagues till he killed Sarah Everard. Disgusting. Anyone who knew should be fired.
Yes that killer was nicknamed THE GRAPIST by his colleagues that's appalling
Brown was hundreds of miles away in college when the girl was murdered. The Widow won a 6 million suit against the San Diego police.
Report the guy for what because he was a pervert? He did t hurt anyone that they knew of?? What the hell is wrong with u people??? What kind of sick mob mentality to ruin another’s life is that? Wow??? Wth is wrong with society today?? Mind ur own business stop judging others he was a pervert that does not make him a killer or rapist??? What would u report seriously?? I cant believe 45 people agree with that kind of nonsense??? All of you
Must be like 20-35 yrs old?? Because people never ran around reporting every little effing thing to the boss before you people started playing “ let’s police the people around us” mind ur business and take care of yourself my heavens
Idk...The guy got that nickname for doing back then what most americans are doing nowadays. Moral standards were way different those days. And he worked in that lab. He could have easily replace the evidence sample if he was indeed guilty. Looks like a clear case of cross contamination.
He got that nickname for going to strip clubs. Who doesnt do that nowadays? What is criminal about it? If it is criminal why strip clubs are legal?
poor guy 😢 I feel for his friend that found her because I’m sure he has ptsd too from seeing her like that 💔
My heart goes out to Jim Alt. I can’t even imagine the PTSD he must have gone through and survivors guilt. Truly heartbreaking. This young man has to have be forever haunted. 💔
So basically, these families are deprived of justice bc the samples were mishandled. Awesome.
No one knew how to handle samples at the time. DNA wasn't a thing.
He killed himself because he was guilty of killing the young girl..cowards always end up paying..
I have never felt less sympathy while hearing someone cry than I did while listening to that creep’s widow. Rebecca Brown’s sobbing annoyed me more than moved me. I felt what I felt when I heard Amber Heard “cry.” I barely saw any real tears
so you're pretty confident that Kevin did the crime?
Ikr,she didn't have any tears, she made the I'm crying face, but no tears, she was wiping nonexistent tears and tried to put on a good show, but failed.I found that so odd.
Jim is one hell of a man! I admire his courage, love for his girlfriend, owning up to his mistake, guilt when failed.. he has it all as a human should. May God take his pain away!!
Didn't like the lady defense attorney
Bro almost died, can you really be mad at someone for not keeping your child safe when they couldn’t even keep themselves safe do to the fact that they were asleep when the attack took place??? I mean COME ON Dad!
(Edit) In all seriousness I know that when parents lose a child, that their thinking can be a lil skewed. My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who’s lost someone they love….💔
I've seen this episode before and that part always bothered me. Doesn't the dad think that that Jum suffers with survivors guilt as it is? Or blaming himself. 3ven though he shouldn't.
Right like why is your teenager allowed to sleep outside overnight and not at home?!!!
@@tmcgruder2 her parents were unaware that they were leaving the house that night. They were not home and they were out of town, so don’t blame the parents.
Those two teenagers promised they were going to stay home, and didn’t!
Guys, those feelings ... I don't think we can understand them. There's so much grief and pain involved. Leave them to their feelings, it's not for us to judge.
@@persgodivaI actually totally agree with you….
Feel sorry for everyone in this horrific situation The SDPD which I supported for forty years as a resident is a despicable Law enforcement agency for the way the man accused! They wanted case closed and after suicide named publicly leaves a very very distinct smell of incompetence and liability to Law Enforcement.
The man should have been investigated as a suspect. They should be no stone left unturned
Agreed lived in san Diego since 1982 as propolice as you can get! This was not just lazy but unconscionable for sure1
He was guilty and a coward!
A 14 year old is a girl, not a young woman. I don't know why people say that. Like they're trying to minimize the crime.
People referring to teenage girls as "young women", especially when in this case they're only 14 and 15 years old, is incredibly creepy and very gross. They are not adults, stop thinking of them like adults, stop treating the case like they're adults. But since society writ large will eagerly blame women for anything (including being the victim of a crime) it probably sounds better blaming "young women" than "children".
I was living on the beach for several months back in the late 80's in northern CA. There were a lot of crazy people around me. As I look back now, I am sure my life was spared and my angel was watching over me. It is not safe nowadays for any lone female to be living on the beach. We live and learn and for some it is too late.
Evil, not crazy. Stop minimizing
They do this out of fear and mistaken beliefs that if they }behave only a certain way or do a certain thing," that no crimes or violence will be perpetrated upon them or their loved ones...
@@hillarybillary21 Hey, there are many people that are evil and then, mentally unbalanced without being evil and others that combine both. I understood what this person meant by their comment.
I just don’t understand how, when the murderer’s MO was exactly the same, they can say these cases are not related. BS. And I think Mrs Brown is understandably in a state of perpetual denial. Strange that all three main suspects killed themselves, huh?
I thought the same thing about the two murders. I do now there are copy cat crimes one was the right breast and other was the left breast.
@@x35mmmanthe second girl had the blood of a convicted rapist all over her. But the police are going to go after the scientist who worked without gloves in the lab? A c a b.
Because they use to always mention a copycat for many crimes back then. The crimes look like they are related and could honestly be 2 separate cases.
It's a pretty low blow by Police..... waiting until after he's passed then announcing that he's basically guilty! What happened to "innocent until proven otherwise"?
So sad, another life of the party person whose life, was cut short. My deepest sympathy, to the families.😔⚘️
They were kids, doing kids things. Especially in that day and age, kid were more free to be kids. In no way should he be blamed for her death. You can't protect anyone while your sleeping. I know that father was hurting but it was just wrong to blame him. That poor guy has to live with this for the rest of his life.
kevin didn't do it. yes he's a creep but not murderer. simply he in the wrong place at the wrong time. he might photographed her before the murderer came (or might see kevin and hide). kevin left, and the murderer took action. he might suicide bc guilt and pressure from police and people that know him.
And his DNA ended up on the swab, what's the chances in that 🤔
Oh come ON. That is a long shot.
What made the 14 year-old write a farewell to her parents.
My thought too
She probably got a premonition.. a dream that she's going to die.
Deep thinker
How often do defense attorney's say there is zero proof my client ever was there.
