Oh man, Darkness II. Flawed, but one of my favourite shooters. It still bugs me we're not getting a third game. Especially after that cliffhanger ending. May as well replace Jackie's NOOOOOOOO! with FFFFFUUUUUU! Anyways, good review man :)
uuuu hello my master rabbit's :) And yoooooo I see u are feeling like me duuude this is my favourite game of all time I am loving it ! I was playing this when I was 14 years of age and yooooooooo ... This beats my heart to even cry and it will never be darkness 3 even it will be a trilogy ahhhh wont be :(
easily one of the best games i played of that year sadly it was too short & hopefully some day a 3rd will be made & jackie comes back as the darkness, but it would be awesome if they remastered the 1st game & redid the shooting mechanics like how they are in the 2nd game it would literally give the 1st game new life
Sigh, it is a shame since framerate issues become null with current hardware... Still, with PC games, a 10 year old port is still a good thing since you can still play it 20 years later at better quality.
The Darkness II didn't sell very well unfortunately. I believe there were actually plans for DLC but 2K scrapped them because the game just didn't sell enough. This alone makes a sequel pretty unlikely. But hey, nobody thought a sequel to The Darkness 1 was going to happen but it did!
Its sad..... I bought this game on launch day I was stoked for a sequel to the darkness I really was hoping for a sequel that brought back the open world.
Yeh I did. I also watched "the man with the golden arm" I think it was called. Where Frank Sinatra plays a junky, on another tv later in the game. That was a much better film. Edit: just did a search for it on you tube and its there in its entirety for anyone who wants to watch it.
I prefer pretty much everything about the 1st minus some combat improvements. But alot of abilitys from the 1st are missing entirely. I really liked using the ability that aloud u to control a tentacle across walls that shit was dope asf.
I'll never really understand the whole complaint regarding Kirk Acevedo not voicing Jackie in this. He's an okay actor and all, but he's far removed from what I ever imagined Jackie sounding like when I bought and read my first Darkness comic in the 90s.
Man I love the Darkness 2. One really cool thing about it was the ability to manually pump your shotgun, something I've never seen in any other FPS game
The last time I played the game if you rebound those keys to work that way it would rebind it so when you only have one gun it uses right mouse button.
This game is pretty undderated. Sure the first game had a better story but the story here isn't too bad and the gameplay curb stomps the original. I wished they made a third one.
It's a shame this game was so overlooked - I still prefer the first game just that little bit more because I feel it's so much more interesting in where it goes with its story and how Jackie grows as a character but The Darkness 2 by far has the better gameplay. Sure the level design is not as interesting and it sucks how they decided to for a linear approach when they could have expanded on the idea of having a very small but well crafted open world the first game had. If nothing else then we could easily say its a fuck ton better than the modern military bullshit we were all subjected to for the entirety of last generation.
I could have sworn you covered this but that's only because everytime I think you have uploaded a review of every FPS game ever made another review appears. :)
I completed around 600 videogames to this day, and it's one of the very few that gave me a cathartic experience at the end. I couldn't stop crying for about 15 minutes. SPOILER START___________It's happened when I hugged Jenny at the end, and I wouldn't want to let her go... for about 15 minutes. It was a very touching moment, especially because what happend in the first game. ______________SPOILER END I also fuckin' loved the first game too. The gameplay is better in the first one (half open-world, side quest, etc.), but the story is better in the second one, and there's more gore, there are executions, and some cool ideas as well.
I didn't particuarly like the first one, but I think that's due to playing it on PS3. I picked this up for PC a little while ago after watching your review and enjoyed it a lot , for what it is.
I have the games but I haven't started playing them. I'll hopefully get around to them sometime this year. Great review GggMan and thanks for the heads up. I skipped the first couple of minutes of the review to avoid spoilers.
Terribly underrated sequel. I played this before the first (picked up at launch) and immediately fell in love. I had to seek out the original as soon as I reached the credits.
Original never came to PC, and I honestly had never heard of it until I saw a bit of gameplay for this one. Was intrigued and managed to get it pretty cheap soon after it came out. What a cool and original game. Loved it.
my favorite comic book growing up and the game definitely captures the feel of it. Very good premise and story for an fps and the gameplay is tight.Underrated to say the least.
Thanks for reviewing this game Gggman. I think I requested it a couple months back. Just wondering are you going to review the Hitman series any time soon? I mean it's a pretty decent stealth series in my opinion.
Long Tran Not my channels cup of tea, bro. To be honest though the only Hitman game I liked was Blood Money and even then I found it very trial and error.
Thanks for this review. I played Darkness II after watching your review. The game was very much enjoyable. What I found the most annoying was that both Q and E could grab weapons and switch them with what I was using. As a result, during a fight, instead of grabbing enemies for execution, or eating some hearts, I would often ended up dualing two different weapons, those that I had no intention to use.
The worst part about the lack of a sequel is how they teased the Angelus at the end. Would have been amazing to have it and the Witchblade show up in the third game.
I really like the graphics they're timeless the characters look very comic book like very animated and surprisingly colorful for the dark color palette the game uses
Most FPS games fall really flat for me and I never finish them. I remember picking this up on PS3 for $7 and i marathoned right through it. When I finished it I sat all the way though the credits and just let it sink right in. This game is fantastic and I love it
The first Darkness game had such a well made story , even with the framerate problems i loved it. The second was still alright, but didn´t blow me away.
If you haven't read the comic books, you should. The Darkness and Witchblade are also tied together, which is kind of cool. The story of Jackie and Jenny is much different as well. He isn't dating her in the comic, and she dies before he realizes he loves her, and it fucks him up pretty significant;y, ultimately leading to his suicide and eventual resurrection from hell, which is fucking crazy shit.
I honestly agree it you GGGman. Really most of the things fans of the first game complain about I think are silly. Like the fact that the game is linear as opposed to open world because the open world structure of the first game did more to hinder the experience. The best part of that game was the action so I preferred that they designed the game to focus more on that aspect.
While the game was short, I've put a solid ~40hrs into it. It kind of has a spectacle fightery vibe to its design where you're meant to replay on harder difficulties while unlocking more abilities, and most of the cutscene stuff can be skipped (and if you know where to go, the mental asylum scenes are fairly short as well) so replaying is a must, in my opinion. There's nothing like dual wielding auto-aiming guns that can shoot through walls.
You'd be hard pressed to find an awesome hidden gem like this one. Highly exceeded my expectations when my brother got it from a local pawn shop. He just left it there to collect dust.. Good thing I brushed that dust off and enjoyed it as much as possible!
I hope this game gets a sequel honestly. Maybe THQ Nordic could acquire the rights. They’ve been fantastic when it comes to bringing back franchises through remasters or sequels.
Aside from that annoying blur glitch on PC that I managed to fix, Darkness 2 really was a damn fine action game. Short, but I had tons of fun ripping guys apart and using things in the environment. The violence really makes it so damn satisfying.
It's a good game, I have a lot of fun with it but I still think Starbreeze did the first game much better for me. It was much more darker and had a lot of elements that I still remember so far. Voice actors are great in The Darkness II but no more Steven Seagal looks and voice in early years as Jackie. And watching the entire film by Jackie with his girlfriend was a cool little thing.
I enjoyed the first darkness on the xbox but Darkness 2 played just even better and i cannot understand why they don't make games like this anymore yet they still make Fifa, it's football nothing more. Great review.
Wow, I didn't know ANYONE liked the original game more. I can see people getting a little miffed with certain changes, but like you said as a simulation of a badass possessed by a destructive demon this entry blows the original out of the fucking water for me.
Both of these games were really good, in their own ways. The first one had a much better story and world feel along with the little details like watching an entire movie with Jenny. The 2nd game had FAR superior combat however and, the collectibles were all very cool.
gggmanlives I was wondering if you can review a few other fps games like medal of Honor airborne, area 51, swat 4, and older fps games that were somewhat well received
I noticed this was made by the same team behind Warframe, even though graphically, this game looks significantly better I think. (And it's using the same engine.) I just needed someone to tell me if i should buy this game and you did it. Thank you.
I bought this in a bargain bin years back - I waited because the initial reviews were so lukewarm (at best) I really enjoyed the first game and I think this review is right on the money - well worth a play if you enjoyed the first one. I replayed the first one then this back to back and instead of being bothered by the differences I enjoyed the change up, though I do understand the complaints.
"Thankfully much of the story stuff is pretty damn good" Well, if not playing the first game - yes, it's stupidly nice rude comix-like story with open ending. Otherwise it sucks
Best part of this game for me was easily the character of Johnny Powell. The writing for the character and artifact descriptions are certainly great, but the voice actor's *delivery* is what sells it.
This is of those games where I'd like to play it someday but unless they release the first one as a HD Remake on Steam, I'm not especially fussed. I'm the same way about the Saint's Row franchise...
I wonder if they'll ever be a Darkness 3 considering the ending was clearly setting up for a sequel. It will most likely be a reboot if this series comes back in terms of the games.
Ahhhhh this game. I played both games repeatedly to the point of memorizing most everything and honestly............ I much prefer 2 over 1. As much as I liked the first one, the second was just better for me overall. Combat was MUCH better, both gunplay and Darkness use and I maxed out everything in both games. I never felt as powerful in 1 then I did in 2 and that's after both repeat replays going back and forth between both, 1 was very lacking when it came to the power as black hole and the darkness guns were all I got the most use out of, black arm was ok for making cover but meh overall and creeping dark was always forgotten save for the puzzles using it. When you actually look at the comics and compare the games, 2 was WAY closer to the amount of stuff Jackie could do then 1. 2 was so much better there, the cell shade just added to it looking better as I felt the first's graphics didn't age too well. The voicework I only noticed Jackie's change but had no complaints and the kept the Darkness's VA, who you hear way more usually, so no big issue really. The change from the "open world" to the more linear style didn't bother me either, I really don't get the hate cause I found the hub rather bland as it's New York, not alot of people there for the Big Apple. The side missions in 1 were also lacking as you never got anything useful from them, no new powers, guns, etc so does it matter? Plus, I thought the ending of 1 was abit of a let down as you get no choice in killing Paulie, wasn't expecting any extra endings but you get forced to kill him no matter what so didn't feel very damning to do it like what was implied. 2's ending left me craving more as if you grabbed all the artifacts, you get a hint at the ending only abit before it happens, I REALLY hope we get 3 someday. Plus, this game had a New Game + which was a pleasant shock as I said 1 needed that as I hated restarting with the low Darkness meter from needing to eat all those hearts again. I also had the chance to finish the coop stuff, was pretty good as well so I think as a whole, Darkness 2 is by far the better of the two and felt more like the comic with the more supernatural stuff coming into play.
Hey guys, check out my updated review here:

no
Easily one of the more overlooked games of 2012.
Matthew Cool was both my most anticipated and greatest of the year. great game
Easily one of the more overlooked games, PERIOD
Oh man, Darkness II. Flawed, but one of my favourite shooters.
It still bugs me we're not getting a third game. Especially after that cliffhanger ending. May as well replace Jackie's NOOOOOOOO! with FFFFFUUUUUU!
Anyways, good review man :)

It is a shame that The Darkness 1 is NOT on PC.
First one was better
Sure was
Sigh, it is a shame since framerate issues become null with current hardware...
Still, with PC games, a 10 year old port is still a good thing since you can still play it 20 years later at better quality.
wait for rpcs3 or xenia emulator
dathip there's a petition on steam with like 1000 +1's
A very flawed but charming series, damn shame we'll probably never see a third game.
Blu Hat pretty sure the company that made it is gone
Flawed and charming is how I'd also describe the Metro games tbh
The Darkness II didn't sell very well unfortunately. I believe there were actually plans for DLC but 2K scrapped them because the game just didn't sell enough. This alone makes a sequel pretty unlikely. But hey, nobody thought a sequel to The Darkness 1 was going to happen but it did!
Its sad..... I bought this game on launch day I was stoked for a sequel to the darkness I really was hoping for a sequel that brought back the open world.
I can't believe you forgot to mention Mike Patton's awesome VO work as the Darkness!
"YES! FEED ME THEIR HEARTS!"
"THE SIPHON!!!! FOR JENNY!
not everybody listens to Faith No More these days, Sonny Jim. I know I did and have their 1989 casette tape, hehe
"Assecution."
'Nuff said. I'm playing this.
You just gave me my new band name. Thanks
Literally got his arse handed to him
Haha had to throw in venus for the thumbnail
It was necessary.
The power of Boner compelled him!
"That's... why I'm here"
I Love Venus 😍
you've convinced me to play thru this long forgotten title I have in my library that I picked up cheap ages ago on humble bundle.
It's so goddamn good, I've played Darkness II at least three times now. The cel-shaded art style means it looks gorgeous even in 2016.
It is a damn shame that this game had no sequel. I loved playing this.
has anyone actually watched the entirety of To Kill A Mocking Bird at the beginning of The Darkness?
God I wanna say I did but I cant recall all of it.
Yeh I did. I also watched "the man with the golden arm" I think it was called. Where Frank Sinatra plays a junky, on another tv later in the game. That was a much better film. Edit: just did a search for it on you tube and its there in its entirety for anyone who wants to watch it.
Yes me and my little brother at the time watched it all are first time watching it and it was on the darkness game.... not a bad movie lol
i watched it with my gf, she just loved it, so i have to cosplay Jacky and watch it with her.
Yep
Ah yes the Darkness. the ww1 segment was by my opinion a masterpiece in terms Lovecraftian horror. Fucking classic
I thought the same, I loved the WW1 segment to death. I wish more games went for clever WTF moments like that.
Edward Abaring I played the first but completely forgot what happened in the WW1 section in terms of story, mind filling me
In, bro?
One the best depictions of hell I have ever seen
Unpopular opinion: Darkness II is better than the first one.
Arguable but both is honestly good
I agree
I prefer pretty much everything about the 1st minus some combat improvements. But alot of abilitys from the 1st are missing entirely. I really liked using the ability that aloud u to control a tentacle across walls that shit was dope asf.
I agree. The story line of the first was excellent but TD2 shooting mechanics, graphics and overall presentation beats the first by a mile.
I'll take a shorter game with better gameplay anyday. The first one is also great though.
I loved that crazy guy associated with Jackie that knows all the ancient history about the Darkness!
2:15 HOLY SHIT back when Western Developers made good looking female characters!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dyammmmnnnn her personallity is good man
To be fair, a bad looking hooker would be kind of an insult.
She's a Spicy Meat Ball!!!
The most annoying part about this game is how in dual wield mode your mouse buttons fire the opposite weapons.
HairyHog Change your keybinds.
The last time I played the game if you rebound those keys to work that way it would rebind it so when you only have one gun it uses right mouse button.
Barely used akimbo because i would´ve been out of ammo the whole damn time. So i used single weapons and props to stay in combat
I always prefer left button fires right and right mouse button fires left/offhand weapon anyhow.
That's why you play on Console.
*Missing the Ruben sandwich references*
This game is pretty undderated. Sure the first game had a better story but the story here isn't too bad and the gameplay curb stomps the original.

I WAS JUST FUCKING WATCHING MIKE PATTON.
The 1st one was a huge game for me back in the day , pretty much one of my fav ones. And this is not left behind! I loved both games. Cool review man!
One thing I absolutely fell in love with the darkness was the amazing story weaved flawlessly with Space Marine level gameplay
I loved playing this game. nothing feels like ripping enemy limb from limb.
I could have sworn you covered this but that's only because everytime I think you have uploaded a review of every FPS game ever made another review appears. :)
You are the only channel i come to for video game reviews, always blunt and give your true feelings...keep up the good work!
Cool review, could you review NecroVision?
Endeavour yeah i bought all 2 games on steam
Endeavour a
great game, probably the worse english voice acting I've ever heard though.
Necrovision is one of the most underground games and yet very unknown and underrated.
last challenge map (Serious Uncle Sam) is epitomy of EPIC.
If you survive it that's it
also - Deathwatch (2002) inspired
I love both the Darkness 1 and 2 I really feel like its slept on
No mention of how awesome Mike Patton is in this one?
I completed around 600 videogames to this day, and it's one of the very few that gave me a cathartic experience at the end. I couldn't stop crying for about 15 minutes.
SPOILER START___________It's happened when I hugged Jenny at the end, and I wouldn't want to let her go... for about 15 minutes. It was a very touching moment, especially because what happend in the first game. ______________SPOILER END
I also fuckin' loved the first game too. The gameplay is better in the first one (half open-world, side quest, etc.), but the story is better in the second one, and there's more gore, there are executions, and some cool ideas as well.
I agree, the scene in the diner pretty much had me crying full on man tears. The ending is really cool too.
I'm talking about the true ending by the way, but the other ending is awesome too. :D
Koncz Dávid
The true ending? With the Angelus?
Yes. But that Angelus stuff only happens, when you let go Jenny. You can hold her in your arms as long as you want in the "underworld".
Koncz Dávid
Yes, I think most people know that, dude.
you didn't warn me...that you would make a fantastic review of this game, nice one.
Is there any new news on The Darkness 3? Does anyone knows if 2K will work on it? Thanks
Still waiting..
I didn't particuarly like the first one, but I think that's due to playing it on PS3.
I picked this up for PC a little while ago after watching your review and enjoyed it a lot , for what it is.
Just Bought the 1st one from EB Games gonna have a blast tonight!
"Don't say I didn't warn you"
...I mean... It's not like I have a choice. The first game never got a PC release.
I have the games but I haven't started playing them. I'll hopefully get around to them sometime this year. Great review GggMan and thanks for the heads up. I skipped the first couple of minutes of the review to avoid spoilers.
Cliffhanger ending with no sequel is putting pain to everyone who loved this game
You forgot to mention that the darkness is voiced by mike fkn patton!
Hey gggman.... YOU DIDNT WARN ME!
Definitely one of the more memorable shooters I've played in the last few years. Fun ride. Pick it up cheap and enjoy. Game on!
Terribly underrated sequel. I played this before the first (picked up at launch) and immediately fell in love. I had to seek out the original as soon as I reached the credits.
We need the darkness 3.
This game was phenomenal and one of the best single player story games I've played.
I feel the same bro, amazing game.
You have a really good content schedule man, you definitely deserve some more subscribers.
Thanks!
alot of your reviews are fun but this is an excellently CRAFTED one. seriously, well done.
Thanks
Original never came to PC, and I honestly had never heard of it until I saw a bit of gameplay for this one. Was intrigued and managed to get it pretty cheap soon after it came out.
What a cool and original game. Loved it.
Your editing keeps improving mate, good job.
I'm glad you finally reviewed this one. I played the first years and years ago when it first came out but never picked up the 2nd.
my favorite comic book growing up and the game definitely captures the feel of it. Very good premise and story for an fps and the gameplay is tight.Underrated to say the least.
My problem with Darkness 2 was how short and linear it was. I loved exploring dark alleys in the first game. Made me feel like the boogeyman.
Thanks for reviewing this game Gggman. I think I requested it a couple months back. Just wondering are you going to review the Hitman series any time soon? I mean it's a pretty decent stealth series in my opinion.
No chance.
Gggmanlives Not your cup of tea I'm guessing? Ah well.
Long Tran
Not my channels cup of tea, bro. To be honest though the only Hitman game I liked was Blood Money and even then I found it very trial and error.
Gggmanlives Yeah that's true you basically replay a level until you have every nook and cranny memorised like the back of your hand. XD

Thanks for this review. I played Darkness II after watching your review. The game was very much enjoyable. It's crazy that I hated the cel-shaded graphics back when they came out but like you said today they look great and timeless.
Also Johnny Powell is my waifu.
Fuggin love that character.
Most FPS games fall really flat for me and I never finish them. I remember picking this up on PS3 for $7 and i marathoned right through it. When I finished it I sat all the way though the credits and just let it sink right in. This game is fantastic and I love it

No.
@@Gggmanlives damn
The first Darkness game had such a well made story , even with the framerate problems i loved it. The second was still alright, but didn´t blow me away.

Mr. gggmanlives do you think you could do a syndicate review?
One of the coolest protagonist homes of any video game ever.
STILL wanting for a threequel.
Great review matey ! One of my favourite games ever.
It's a good game, I have a lot of fun with it but I still think
Starbreeze did the first game much better for me.

One of the best story driven fps game realesed after 2010 I think. I loved it.
I played this game when I was 9 and I’m pretty sure I wasn’t supposed to but I’m so glad I did
Love love LOVE this game. Played through it multiple times on various platforms. Really wish we could get a third installment sometime soon...
The fact that this series will never get a third entry is one of the many injustices of the gaming industry.
Whats your thoughts on the resident evil 7 dlc's that are coming out?
How did I not know Paul Jenkins wrote these? Paul is the fucking man.
Also, both The Darkness games and comics are criminally underrated.
I enjoyed the first darkness on the xbox but Darkness 2 played just even better and i cannot understand why they don't make games like this anymore yet they still make Fifa, it's football nothing more. Great review.
Excellent thumbnail choice!
Wow, I didn't know ANYONE liked the original game more. I can see people getting a little miffed with certain changes, but like you said as a simulation of a badass possessed by a destructive demon this entry blows the original out of the fucking water for me.
Man, imagine if Bethesda got their hands on The Darkness IP and made the third one on their Id Engine. Jesus, all the gore galore.
Arkane studios should pick up the sequel for this game
@@nicktod6117 yeah i think arkane studios would be the ideal choice but i would also love to see 4A games give it a try!

loved the first one on Xbox 360, bought the 2nd one on PC didn't care for the Cel Shading of it. Wish they kept it darker, gritty.
One of the BEST GAMES PERIOD, Now We just need The Darkness 3!
can you review natural fawn killers please?
Best part of this game for me was easily the character of Johnny Powell. The writing for the character and artifact descriptions are certainly great, but the voice actor's *delivery* is what sells it.
Not so long ago i aced the game with my friend in coop to get them achievements and i must say we need Darkness III to wrap-up the story finally.
I played it recently for the first time. The shooting is good but I had some troubles with controlling the 'Darkness' movements.
It will most likely be a reboot if this series comes back in terms of the games.
why are his hands also darkness
I still liked the 1st Darkness more! In every way.
I loved the comics of the darkness it was so cool
does the game have the badass armor
