LOL could have fooled me because the view model seems completely independent of anything actually going on in the in the world, even when you're shooting it.. like how is this a thing? In 2023? it was getting better when we had full body awareness.. the first riddick game was a great example of taking that seriously.. I swear people took the idea of 16x9 instead of making it a wider screen, and just went full hand into trying to translate the looking 4x3, including keeping the same fov so you just lost more of the screen in the end.. and that was if they didn't just give you a garbage FoV to begin with of something other than 90, because 90 was if you were lucky.. even though it should be about 107 to translate to 16x9.. and it's and it's not like you get to see more if the weapon is off to the side and looking awkward like you're not really shooting forward.. they still make it giant and take up a large amount of the screen real estate, they just like what am I crazy here? Am I like the only human that doesn't have an automatic binocular zoom that if I was holding an object outstretched in front of me it would only view to the wrist?

I’ve always thought Anthony was gonna say the light is love, cause his love for Jackie let him fight the darkness like Jackie’s love for Jenny helps him
Oooft, I was a big fan of The Darkness comics (and Top Cow's Witchblade) and thought the first game particularly was an absolute gem. I love to see this getting some recognition years later!
I love he gives you those cool guns in the beginning, says keep good care of them. But jackie proceeds to immediately throw them away after his first reload because he doesnt reload, he just picks up new guns everytime he gets ammo.
One thing to share about The Darkness 2 multiplayer is that it continues the story of the main game a bit. At the end of it you end up freeing Jackie from Hell and plan to stop the Angelus. It isn't a whole lot but I thought it was something worth sharing.
It's one of the most unique horror FPS games ever made by Starbreeze Studios. The powers and guns combined really made one heck of a combo, and this game alone got me interested in reading the comics too. Such a shame that the franchise didn't continued further.
@@IAmLeMonke Still remember when they tried to make a WW2 game... that flopped so hard no one even remembers it. Wouldn't be surprised if people running the crossover weapons in PD2 forgot why they're in the game.
I remember the night of my 12th birthday, that was the first time i experienced long lasting trauma from a video game. definitely did not expect this game to do me so dirty with that heartbreaking ending where they're sitting on the bench. Great video as always!
The Darkness games carry the vibe of game tie-ins to a movie series from the mid-to-late 00's, back when movies were ashamed to be adapted from comics, and so would put their leads in black leather instead of the actual costumes. After a moderate success in 2007, the producers were a bit less shy about being comic-y with the sequel, after the MCU introduced Cap and Thor. But they bungled it with a sequel setup that never went anywhere because the first sequel didn't make enough money to justify another.
Indeed and I think to remake it and remastered it for new commer to know to the game and the character. And give him the costume like from the comics it would be fun : D
Shame you didn't go more into the collectables in TD2. I personally loved hearing Jimmy speak about real world items mixed into the game's lore. I.E. The Roanoke Axe in the beginning of the game and it implicating The Angelus is actually what wiped the tribe out. Plus, the very last one actually kinda foreshadows the ending involving the Angelus.
I like to think the asylum was Jackie's hell, th fear the darkness is making him loose himself and his mind. While the ww1 hell was more of Anthony's hell
I loved these games so much. I was a big fan of Witchblade and The Darkness in comic form, so when the first of these games came out, I was thrilled. So much fun. I always wanted a Witchblade game, but no such luck 😭
Wouldn't give up hope. Bound to happen eventually, especially with the world drifting into 90s nostalgia mode. Her character design was practically made for gaming - or the idiot comic speculators who made up most of the market in the when she was created. Nothing worked better on that crowd than cheesecake.
"Night is your master." My god, that line still gives me chills to this day! I really hope they remaster the games, man, because I love The Darkness! One of my favorites to play when I was a kid
The first game was one of the first 360 games I put ungodly hours into, I got it from a friend in a CD book full of games. I had no idea what 10 year old me was in for I played this game and it took me months to finish but I loved every minute of it. I love the realism that is felt in this game it doesn't always land but it feel real the weight and gunplay have feeling and I love it. I pray that a PC port or Remaster happens this game is gem and deserves to be played on modern hardware
One of the first games I ever played on PS3, always loved it. It was Yahtzee (Zero Punctuation)'s first review too, and what got me into watching him. Nice to revisit this series, thanks for the video.
Thanks for covering this, truly a gem of a series that needs to come back. Saying that it never left for me as I replay these games fairly frequently and even if I didn't, those Jenny moments have stuck with me since the first time I saw them. Here's hoping that remaster happens as it will solidify Nightdive as one of, if not the best, developers around. (then again they kinda already earned that with Shadowman)
59:03 This might seem like a silly thing to point out, but I like that you can kinda see the guy's lips and cheeks moving a bit as he does his ventriloquism. Like they didn't have to give it that detail, cause it's pretty subtle, but they did. Much appreciated.
I loved these games, and occasionally go back and play the second game every now and then. when you get the ball rolling, you really do just become this moving ball of darkness that quite literally consumes all in its path. It's pretty neat.
The Darkness games will always have a special place in my heart (no pun intended given one of the game's mechanics), despite the second game being stuck with a cliffhanger. The sad thing is that Darkness 2 did so poorly 2K/Take Two cancelled any possible DLCs for the game. I think I'm one of the very few people who has the limited edition of the sequel game, which had a different outfit for the darkling and a couple perks for the single player campaign.
You the man for covering these games. I loved the comics growing up, and me and my ex roommate never realized we were both fans till i was getting rid of my superman crossover comics, and he saw my Darkness vs Superman copy and we now just revist darkness 2 whenever we link up lmao
I still have my pre-owned copy of the darkness 1, and my preorder copy of 2, both for 360. I love these games, go back to play em all the time, and they’re both such weirdly good game. When I was young, I played the first for the cool demon shoulders…and then I met Jackie’s aunt. After that, I was genuinely in love with the story. Thank you to these games for making a large part of my childhood
I have a great memory of playing Darkness too, in the fall time quite a few years ago and spending the weekend with my nephew and my family. Whenever I play the game I think of that nice weekend.
Only watched this now. I love the games, especially the atmosphere of the first one. Although I'm aware of the comics, I've never seen them. great and fair review.
The man was bleeding out and about to die And was more concerned about giving Jackie a present for his 21st birthday And about his pants Be more like that guy Show no fear in the face of death
Unfortunately I got to experience and love the sequel before playing the original, and surprisingly I still enjoyed the sequel quite a bit more. What I found surprising is how manipulative the scenes in the asylum was, how the darkness actually almost gaslighted me into choosing to stay in the asylum with Nurse Jenny. (The Darkling's death was one of the main reasons why I chose to jump) I have a feeling that the asylum wouldn't have been anywhere near as effective if I'd played the original game first. I felt that both games had incredible aspects, the character relationships and worldbuilding of the original were amazing, but the gameplay mechanics (Yes, even the darkling gameplay) and graphical design of the sequel was better. A few things I LOVED so much more in the sequel than the original was the Darkling who has a much more unique personality, and the model of the Darkness itself, for example the Darkness instead of both heads having the same design, one head now has a design better for grabbing and throwing, while the other now has a design better as slicing, biting, and killing quickly.
The darkness 2 has a very special place in my heart. The first game while great was something I played a super long time ago. I played the second game for the first time when I was 16 and it always stuck with me. I remember that first scene when you hear Jenny’s voice then round the corner and see her on the tracks. About 2 months before playing the darkness 2 I had also lost my girlfriend and that game was a much needed catharsis and I love it to pieces.
I preferred the comics near the end of the first run and during the 2nd. I don't mind a bit of camp here and there but the early stuff was just constantly all over the place, every woman looked about identical. Similar face, eyes, lips, hair, body etc. It was that way in Witchblade too. Telling the difference between Sara and ten other female side characters got pretty difficult at times till she was name dropped or seen with the Witchblade. I did love both games to death for very different reasons though. The first felt more... realistic? Creepy and heartfelt at the same time. The second was a blast to play and I enjoyed that they snuck it to be a little closer to the comics in some ways. A real shame we don't seem to be getting a third game featuring the Angelus or a Witchblade spin-off.
Before watching the video I wanna put my two cents in because I have a nostalgic love for this series. First game I remember being meh. Didn’t play a lot of it as a kid. And I remember less. But it got the ball rolling and had me checking out the comics. 2 tho, 2 is special. Dabbled in the comics so I had a sense of the plot. But it was edgy, violent, and gory as all hell. With little twinkles of genuinely deep storytelling and philosophy. The graphics were GREAT and still hold up now with that comic-esque art style blowing up again rn. Combat was just downright euphoric😂 and at times the story had you by the balls, having you SWEAR death on all who wronged you. I. Love. 2. Still have it downloaded as we speak, boutta play again. Cannot praise the game more.
Love the first The Darkness with all my heart. The way Starbreeze landed the comic book story in the first part is very reminiscent of what HBO did with the Spawn animated series in the late 90s.
I'm litterally that meme of Spongebob sitting in the diner patiently waiting for The Darkness 3😂. If they do come out with a sequel its gonna be on some Devil May Cry shit😂 I love both games so much
have some good memories playing the second one as a kid i was pretty young the ending stuck wiht me for YEARS still think ab this game sometimes the asylum/hospital part or whatever was the most memorable
Nice to see you covering this series! I've always loved the comics and the games were both super memorable and fun. The second felt more like the comic, while the first had a fantastic atmosphere. Another difference between the first and second series, and the first and second game - is actually something kind of silly - his suit. In series one and the second game, Jackie can power up in the biomechanical armour, but in the first game and the second series Jackie is mostly just a guy in a black trench coat. Personally I prefer the super suit - and the more tongue in cheek writing style.
Woah, I never imagined that such writing and voice acting could be hidden in such a relatively unknown video game series, but thinking about it, it makes sense. For one thing, so many incredible artists lurk in the underground, outside the mainstream, in what would be labeled "extreme horror fiction" for the time... For another, it makes sense that if a non-Japanese video game of thar era could be compared to Silent Hill in terms of psychological horror, it would be a scandivian one, hiring good voice actors. So metal 🤘
I played and replayed the first game ad nauseum. Story, gameplay, and graphics were absolutely amazing. I couldn't get into the second one but I have a fondness of the comics and the first game
Blowing his brains out in front of a mirror was definitely not what I was expecting. I remember yelling “wtf”…and then silently staring at my tv in disbelief. Once that feeling sank in I felt just enough rage and anger to wipe the fucking floor out of anyone I felt was responsible. The game giving you that drive to move forward and get revenge was next level writing. Games now days lack purpose and focus a lot of the time…so providing such intense motivation made this game pretty amazing.
I played these games during the angstiest time in my life, and boy did they hit. Literally couldn't watch the Jenny death scene during this video because they do so well in making you see why Jackie loves her so much.
This game was soo cool, not gonna lie this game inspired me through many of my years, this game was a masterpiece, liked the second one too but it was not as good as the first one.
I actually wouldve preferred if they hadn't confirmed the mental hospital was an illusion. Jackie just jumps and Jennie screams in horror, cut to the hell section that might or might not be real. Would've made the game a little more memorable and kept people talking about it.
I like the second game more than the first since the first had a lot of issues and I kept getting lost plus you have the added effect of I think I had a glitch or something that prevented me from playing the second game though that was amazing
The first darkness game was one of those special first wave 360 releases that really pushed the hardware to its limits and tried a lot of new things. I think it’s a fantastic game with lots of memorable moments. World war 1, the orphanage and the lighthouse still live in my head rent free. All that being said, Jackie get a goddamn haircut!
You know, I remember reading Wizard previewing The Darkness comics back when their were first getting started. and most of that preview being devoted to "Jackie learning of his offspring curse and trying to make a woman out of the Darkness to alleviate his stress". As well as talk about Witchblade, Fathom and related titles.

And it definitely expanded on the lore and I still love it. I think I just got so emotionally invested in the game/story that I want it all to be cohesive and live up to its true potential lol.
@@ThatDudeJerm That completely makes sesne. I love both the comics and the games.
I love to see this getting some recognition years later!
so was i, i read the comics right up till artifacts. then i lost interest when jackie recreated the universe.
the games i still like them
I love he gives you those cool guns in the beginning, says keep good care of them.
It's one of the world's great shames that Starbreeze is only ever remembered for Payday 2
@@IAmLeMonke Still remember when they tried to make a WW2 game...
that flopped so hard no one even remembers it. Wouldn't be surprised if people running the crossover weapons in PD2 forgot why they're in the game.
The Dig at Linkara's Lightbringer is the best joke I never saw coming. Bravo.
The Darkness 1 is probably one of the most important games to me ever. I hope every day that it gets enough attention for a pc port or even a remaster
Almost 17 years later and the jenny storyline still breaks my heart
If Jackie ever goes berserk, you know THE LIGHTBRINGER will come and save the day
Hmmmmm?
I wish I could join the lightbringer’s harem 🥺
"I'm the fucking universe!"
Linkara and his magical blunderpus? I’ll hand that he IS faster than Jackie
Oh this is gonna be good. Grew up playing both Darkness games, and was a fan of both. Needs a good replay to see if it holds up.
Second one is really good still
The first one holds up, my guy. Always will.
Second does & Its online is still a nice run
I like to think the asylum was Jackie's hell, th fear the darkness is making him loose himself and his mind. While the ww1 hell was more of Anthony's hell
I remember playing The Darkness, Jericho, and F.E.A.R during this era. Amazing dark FPS games on the 360
Lol. At very same moment I thought, damn he looks like Adam from YMS. But I didn't expect you to mention him.
My absolute favorite games ever but we seriously need a third follow-up! Jackie, please come back!
@richmcgee434 Still waiting for another spawn game or movie. From that If it was successful could definitely see them revisiting this.
It's such a shame we haven't had a Darkness 3 yet, great video as always :)
One of my all time favorite games by one of my very favorite creators. Kudos man thanks for giving it some love
I like to think the loading screens in 1-2 happen after number 2 with Jackie stuck on the square platform in the darkness recounting the events
The darkness games are amazing some of the best games ever made its ages ahead of its time we need more the darkness games and witchblades games too.
If they _do_ make a remaster of the first, I'll be so fucking happy
Fr
Oh... my god... I grew up with The Darkness on the ps3 and I've been thinking about it so much lately. I really need to replay it.
Makes me happy to see people talk about games i love.
All time favourite game, never found a retrospective on it. Thank you, you dont know how much this means.
One of the first games I ever played on PS3, always loved it. It was Yahtzee (Zero Punctuation)'s first review too, and what got me into watching him. Nice to revisit this series, thanks for the video.
I'm still upset that they didn't make another game because I loved the second game to death.
*_"NO! THE HOST WILL_* *NOT* *_DIE!"_*
59:03 This might seem like a silly thing to point out, but I like that you can kinda see the guy's lips and cheeks moving a bit as he does his ventriloquism. Like they didn't have to give it that detail, cause it's pretty subtle, but they did. Much appreciated.
Johnny Powel explaining the relics that is found throughout the game was so funny 😆
I loved these games, and occasionally go back and play the second game every now and then. when you get the ball rolling, you really do just become this moving ball of darkness that quite literally consumes all in its path. It's pretty neat.
While I've barely touched the comics, the games were great
Thank you for covering these games they will always be what made me love gaming and I still play the first one regularly
Thank you for making this video, Darkness is one of my absolute favorite series, heavily slept on as well. Hope it makes a return!!
When you mentioned Mike Patton also being in Portal he's also in Left 4 Dead as well he voiced the common infected, the smoker and the hunter
No kidding?! I’d love to have my likeness immortalised in a video game.
I knew i recognized that snarling
So freaking underrated these games !
If I'm not mistaken both games are backwards compatible on Xbox One & Series X / S
Man, I love videos like this about games. We're in the best era for humanity.
Seeing this on my feed is like a full breakfast platter being dropped right in front of me. Thanks!
I have a great memory of playing Darkness too, in the fall time quite a few years ago and spending the weekend with my nephew and my family. Whenever I play the game I think of that nice weekend.
to anybody who wants to play first darkness game it is xbox one backwards compatible and is regularly at sale.
These games were great and heartbreaking. Both. I wanted a 3rd so bad. Very emotional experiences
Only watched this now. I love the games, especially the atmosphere of the first one. Although I'm aware of the comics, I've never seen them. great and fair review.
The man was bleeding out and about to die
And was more concerned about giving Jackie a present for his 21st birthday
And about his pants
Be more like that guy
Show no fear in the face of death
Oh damn. Soooooo hyped for this video
Oh Hell yeah Boulder Punch covering The Darkness series. I live the 2nd game and have a while video focusing on it in the works.
Cannot praise the game more.
binging boulder punch videos and this gem drops
Love the first The Darkness with all my heart. The way Starbreeze landed the comic book story in the first part is very reminiscent of what HBO did with the Spawn animated series in the late 90s.
God I hope the first game gets a PC remaster. I still have the physical copy for 360. I played it so much man theres nothing else out there like it.
Rumor is Nightdive will be remastering the game, then we can be depressed about Jenny in 4k.
I'm litterally that meme of Spongebob sitting in the diner patiently waiting for The Darkness 3😂. If they do come out with a sequel its gonna be on some Devil May Cry shit😂
I love both games so much
great video, one of my youtubers talking about one of my favorite series !
have some good memories playing the second one as a kid i was pretty young the ending stuck wiht me for YEARS still think ab this game sometimes the asylum/hospital part or whatever was the most memorable
Awesome video bro! I pray often that not only the Darkness 3 finally comes out, but The Darkness as a whole gains media recognition.
I even did a hard mode NO DARKNESS run just because how much i love this game, the soundtrack, everything... such a good game, feels great too.
D1 was such a sick game, i had no clue what it was about when i played it, so i was surprised at every turn
YES
so happy to see this series getting some love.
Man I loved these games growing up I’d love to see them remade with today’s technology they would look insanely good
Love the first one,I remember it came with my xbox 360,and It was crazy how good the graphics were back then, there was nothing like that on console
God you are one of the best vidya channels on UA-cam next to Mandalore and Sseth, almost at 100K subs my guy!!
21st birthday. Sounds like hes been chain smoking cigarettes for 35 years.
Love the games so much. Gotta read the comics soon
Still remember this game after years
Was highly invested in this game the horror mafia ww1 monsters everything was fun 😊
I always thought Darkness, Witchblade, and Fathom would make good live action movies.
I actually wouldve preferred if they hadn't confirmed the mental hospital was an illusion. Jackie just jumps and Jennie screams in horror, cut to the hell section that might or might not be real. Would've made the game a little more memorable and kept people talking about it.
Love the series, sad how we've still not got the 3rd game
I just love that the VA for Victor is the same as one who does Reverend Putty from Morel Orel.
the first game, made me think about it for years and replay so many times
I played the hell out of The Darkness as a kid, such a cool game and I love any game that lets you have little imps
the ww1 hell part of the first one has stayed with me since I played it as a kid.
Man we just don’t get games like this anymore. Where are all the dark, gritty, actual adult video games?
