INFO: Era Vulgaris is the fifth studio album by the american rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Released on June 12th 2007, the album went on to be the last album Queens released in the 00s. Marking the end of an era and a transition into new musical territories. Although a lot of old-school fans enjoy the band’s 3 first albums the most, a generation of new fans seem to favor this album and their newer material. Opinions and musical taste aside, in this video we’ll take a look at the album’s history and the top 10 most interesting facts about it.
Jeff Buckley or John Frusciante?
Frusciante!!!!!! * _ *

Buckley for sure!

Era is such an underrated album that really shines through repeated listens. It's the most interesting direction the band has gone in, musically and visually, and I hope they decide to revisit this crazy, acid, robot, looney landscape. Josh had never sounded more cool.
Awesome that you like it that much. Personally i dig all their albums, but i've always thought this was a bit weaker compared to the first three and Like Clockwork. I've had some awesome times listening to this too though. I guess that's why Qotsa is my all-time favorite band. Even the stuff that i think is "bad" to the Qotsa standard is still friggin amazing!
thats what i told my friends, its hard to listen at first, seems to me because of the beautifully fucked up riffs and general feel of the song, but with repeatition you start to get a hang of it and the pop side of the album really shines through
it's definitely their meth masterpiece
@@LieLikesMusic "First three". Is that "first three" counting from Rated R, or the actual first three counting from the self-titled debut? Cos' it's either missing the self-titled, which is the most brilliant dick and minge shakin' riff-rock album with some of the best guitar tones ever recorded, or it's missing Lullabies to Paralyze, which is equally fantastic and has a sonic landscape as unique as Vulgaris.
@@JohnDaubSuperfan369 the first three are self title, rated R, then Songs. What's the confusion here?
To explain the Era Vulgaris single, the band was mad at the record label and decided to take that song off the album and give it to everyone for free. So that's their attempt at doing that before just putting the mp3 on their website for free titled "you know what you did" which is probably a sarcastic comment towards interscope
I remember several promo clips with bulby and a character named "brown nose the pirate" and always ended with bulby saying "yeah ...you know what you did" ... Still wondering what "it" was.
According to the Desert Session credits, Josh does vocals on that version of Make It Wit Chu. He just sings it differently.
Is that Josh? Wut?
@@LieLikesMusic Yeah. The credits are in the description of the video you linked to.
Lie Likes Music Yep, and Dean Ween played guitar and confirmed this in the top comment on this video: ua-cam.com/video/14-3VzEBVmA/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/ZafH1qXKxMg/v-deo.html
Since he also does the vocals in this live version, it is most likely. Another fun theory: a lot of people believe, that make it wit chu was not written about brody (even though he dedicated it to her on some live performances). Around the time he originally wrote this song for the desert sessions, he had a fling with beloved PJ Harvey before Brody came on the screen again (which might also be the reason, why PJ was on the record). However there are contradictory quotes from Josh on this song, so we'll probably never know.
Easily one of their most underrated albums. But wouldn't recommend it to people new to QOTSA.
My thoughts exactly. I'd rather give people SFTD, Rated R or Clockwork.
I fell in love with QOTSA after listening to Era Vulgaris, one of my favorite albums of all time, an inexplicable gem.
This is one of my fav QOTSA albums. Very unique and quirky and the cover art is very memorable. I just wish the title track and "The Fun Machine Took a Shit and Died" were included.
Era Vulgaris is a brilliant album, as are all the songs they made during that time period, like the title track "Era Vulgaris", "The Fun Machine Took a Shit and Died", "Running Joke", etc. They made SO MUCH incredible music during this era. I don't get why people act like "Era Vulgaris" is a "bad album". QotSA doesn't make "bad albums". Every single album, all the way to "In Times New Roman..." are all absolute fucking masterpieces. -
The test of time has absolved Era Vulgaris. Probably the one I'd take to a desert planet.
3s & 7s is one of the best QOTSA songs from this album. A top 5 from their whole catalog.
Era vulgaris is one of my favorite qotsa albums, it's so dirty sounding and sinister, definitely one of their best imo, thanks for another great qotsa video!!!
Thanks for watching man :) Share it with fellow qotsa fans if you'd like. Although Era is not one of my favorites from them, it definitely has some strong points. I'm Designer, Turnin' on The Screw, River In The Road. They're so, so good.
@@LieLikesMusic Ofc!! oh i have literally no friends who listen to qotsa lmao that's so sad, but damn im currently obsessed with them, truly an amazing band!! thxs for the content bro!!
Not gonna mention the other unreleased tracks that kinda came out with the album? Running Joke and Fun Machine deserve more love.
Mark Lanegan did not sing the lyrics on make it witchu on DS. It was Josh.
Underrated Album for sure..
Agreed. It's grown with me over the years.
This was a great video and in my opinion the animation fits the style of your videos the best of all formats you have tried previously. Keep it up man!
I think so too! I'm still in the beginning stages of learning animation and drawing, but i'll make this the standard for the next videos i think. Cheers
Turnin' on the screw, Into The Hollow, I'm Designer, Misfit Love, 3s & 7s, and Suture Up Your Future are easily one of my favorite album songs
Josh Homme sang lead vocals on the desert sessions version of make it witchu
Thanks for sharing! Always been a fan of the Desert Sessions version of the album but was tickled pink to see it show up on this album! Always been one of the best DS tunes!
Woah!!! Haven’t seen this channel in so long (maybe 3 months or even 5). You are great now!!
Sweet, I haven't actually heard this album yet. I look forward to checking it out now. Glad I just found your channel
I first became aware of Make it Wit Chu on their Through the Woods live album and I assumed it was a cover when I first heard it. That is still my fav version over both studio versions.
my fave version of Make It Wit Chu is on the queens live cd
Wow, I just listened to this album for the first time today
Great Album!
@@Crazyness2122 Glad you checked it out. It's got some catchy tunes to say the least
Just in time! I was about to go to sleep, thanks
Haha, saved by the bell.
@@LieLikesMusic yup, goodnight!
Thank you for this.
I can die in peace now.
Seth Ott Ahah please don't. There's more dope stuff coming lel
@@LieLikesMusic alright. Guess I can hang out a tad longer then ;)
The best QOTSA record, rivaled only by …Like Clockwork!
I know you have to make another Frusciante video, especially after the announcement today. I’m so hyped
Jason dude 🤘🎸😲
I love your Queens of the Stone Age content. Just curious...why no Chevelle?
Nice vid lie keep it comming -brokunas
Sure will bro. Keep rockin!
Best songs of the album is suture up your future and make it wit chu. And also surprised how good make it with chu the original one is as good as the newer one thanks for letting me know.
Sorry but the voice I Wanna Make It Wit Chu (DS) is JOSHUA HOMME isn't Mark Lanegan, for totally sure.

Why isn't 3's & 7's the third single and the seventh song? 😭
Great video! But on the Desert Sessions version is Josh Homme who is singing the lead vocal. You can check it in the credits of the link you posted. Keep on coming such good stuff.
Yeah i saw that after rendering the video. My bad. Anyways, i'm glad you liked the vid.
I love the desert sessions version more, I've been obsessed with it for years i feel like. I listen to it a lot. Just love the sound of it
Damn I feel like Lullabies is so overlooked. It is a masterpiece
For my money, it has some of their absolute best songs, but the album as a whole falls flat for me. I almost never give it a listen beginning to end. Not sure why, tbh. I know a ton of people disagree with me on this!
Yo Lie, Serrina Sims is from the band sweethead. Troy plays there and some EODM members did too. She's also his lady :) great band, get into them.
Very nice surprise!! You did some good digging into this album, lots of stuff I did not know. I like the older version from MIWC better, but not the vocals from Mark Lanegan, so they need to make a 3th version ha! Maybe Alain on vocals? O yeah, my vote is Frusciante . Thanks so much.
Hah you seem like a bigger fan of Alain by now. Especially after you made that portrait. Have you listened to his solo stuff or Eleven by any chance? Cheers
Oh, it's Josh... found this : "Wanna Make It Wit Chu (Desert Sessions): released on Desert Sessions 9&10. Has a rougher mix and a "looser" sound to the guitars, while the song features a Homme vocal performance imitating Mark Lanegan's voice and PJ Harvey on backing vocals. Does not present the intro lick on lead guitar, and while the solos are similar, there are differences".
love the Andrei Terbea inspiration lol
Best album of all time.
Great video! And I am also not a big fan of Desert Session's version of Make it wit chu. :)
Nice animation on this vid dude
Thanks. I'll make it even better with time so stay tuned
On my opinion, era is one of the best albums by qotsa
Can you like please make an “Understanding Guided By Voices”??? I think that would be a very interesting video
Both I Wanna Make it Witchus are Joshua. One of them he is very hung over. You decide which.
Haha yes i'm aware of that now.
The title track on the bonus CD is a fucking BANGER
when hearing something like "sick, sick, sick" bringing in the DFA1979 Bassist would have made so much sense. to bad it never worked out.
clicked as soon as i saw the notification 😅
Thanks Archy! Go notification squad!
Guitar Hero 5 introduced me some great songs some years ago. Make It With Chu was one of them. I'm sorry but after listening to The Desert Sessions version I still prefer the Qotsa one. I surely have to give that album a listen after this video!
Yeah make sure you do. I think i was introduced to Queens first by one of the first guitar hero games too. It's crazy to think how much these games shaped our tastes in music. Same with Tony Hawk Pro Skater.
I believe the desert sessions version of make it with you was Josh Homme doing a Mark Lanegan impression
You should talk about Pearl Jams song Jeremy!
I'm happy to say that ive enjoyed their whole discography. Their albums are not equally good, and i do favor their first few albums, but unlike most bands this has been an enjoyable journey from start to finish.
None of their albums sound the same, but they all sound like QOTSA
That's actually Josh singing on the dessert sessions version of Make it Wit Chu. He said in an interview once that he'd stayed up all night partying and went through a whole pack of cigarettes and his voice was shot, but he decided to record it anyway. It DOES sound like Mark though, but multiple sources have confirmed it is Josh.
Era Vulgaris is one of the best songs in the album , ive also always wandered why they didnt included the song in all versions
Yes! I'm glad someone else feels the same about that song. I think i discovered it a year after listening to Era. And i was shocked about how great it was. Listened to it for days.
Do the stone roses
Something about ACID BATH, por favor
Thank you for doing this video! I fell in love with QOTSA after seeing Sick, sick sick on MTV. I realized then that some of their other songs played a part in my life (Little Sister, No one knows, and I'm sure some others), in my brother's racing videogames from the early 2000s. Era Vulgaris was sort of my intro to the band and I've never looked back. I love 99% of their songs, but honestly I skipped Make it wit chu. Hearing the Desert Sessions version with Mark Lanagan's vocals made me swoon. I adore Josh's voice but Mark was better suited to that song!
My neighbour won the contest, it also came with a joke dvd. I believe it was called "how to dance with Josh" lol
Love your animation of yourself =)
Do Lullabies to Paralyze facts!!
Would happily do that album too sometime
@@LieLikesMusic Sweet, can't wait.
I'm pretty sure Lanegan isnt singing on the DS version of Make it wit chu, since he wasnt even a part of Volume 9 or 10....
This channel should be called lie likes a very particular type of music
hah a funny
Liking the new animation style.
Thanks. It's getting there
I loved this album so much when it came out! My only beef I had with it was the title track "Era Vulgaris" wasn't on the original CD release, nor is it on the Vinyl, which drove me absolutely insane! It's one of my favorite songs of QOTSA (Original and Richard File Remix) period I can't listen to it on vinyl. Otherwise this was an awesome video! Thanks for sharing.

HOW DO YOU ANIMATE MOUTH. & WHY?
I do it in adobe animate. And i think it looks more appealing and entertaining that way. You can do the same by using Adobe character animator. That actually gets the job done quicker.
@@LieLikesMusic Cheers for the answer. Great channel!

It's your first first then ;)
@@LieLikesMusic Awright!
where did your arctic monkeys video go?
For me they weren't the same after Nick Oliveri was kicked out (although I get why Josh Homme did it), those first few albums kick ass!
I think so too. The oldies are goldies. But i still highly appreciate their new music too. Like Clockwork is fantastic imo. Era has some highpoints too for me.
@Lie Likes Music : Yeah for sure and I’m big fan of a lot of stuff Josh Homme has done outside of Queens, Them Crooked Vultures plus the album he did with Iggy Pop a few years back were incredible
@@burtbackattack Couldn't agreed more!
Went to 3 shows on this tour Clev Indianapolis Columbus in Cleveland Mark lanegan didn't show up Josh said he was somewhere intown smoking crack true story
Man... I've heard quite a few stories from fans that are just like this. So it doesn't surprise me. I hope he's doing less of that nowadays.
Not me that's rock and roll that's what's wrong with bands now there's no excitement. You know what your gonna get before it starts that's boring to me
With mark not there they changed the setlist his first time singing song for the def
John Frusciante rejoins RHCP again.

Era Vulgaris What Does It Mean? *DANCING AROUND IN YOUR TIGHT AZZ JEANS*
Hi
Hello there
"Swanky"
Personally have never heard that phrase used in music before.
Well it's a new word now. Let's use it.
My least favorite Qotsa album and the one that killed my obsession with the band. I wasn't aware of the divide you pointed out, but it makes total sense. I always felt that Era Vulgaris was too poppy for me, despite some good tracks like 3s & 7s. I prefer more stoner sounds.
Yupp. I think they really took a leap with their sound with Lullabies too. The 3 first albums are quite similar, while the rest tend to go in different directions i feel.
Man bun?? Bloody sin.
Yfh
Number 4 isnt a fact its your opinion
I like both personally like homme's voice better
Cool! Thanks for sharing
why is this channel always offering something for 1 2 or 3 dollars ahaah
I'm sorry but watching your avatar talk as though it's YOU talking is just too jarring. Your points are great and well articulated but your on screen presence is unsightly...no offense.
More like lie likes josh homme
Indeed bruh
Who doesn’t?
James is the best live band ever and you ignore them . That seems weird
Shannon Crenshaw James?
Woah!!! Haven’t seen this channel in so long (maybe 3 months or even 5). You are great now!!
