Oh my God. I totally understand Primus after watching this. I totally get it now. Mind blown. Thank you so much for helping me understand Primus. I thought I understood them. But it wasn't until I watched a video of someone reading Primus' Wikipedia page that I truly gained an understanding of the band.
I think any 15yo hearing "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" for the first time will be able to understand everything you need to know about Primus. I'm not sure "funk metal" quite captures it.
Still to this day the best show I've ever experienced. Adrian Belew joined them in stage for a bit, and the band covered YYZ to perfection. Opened with To Defy the Laws of Tradition, which is now my favorite song (that was the first time I ever heard it). It was absolutely epic
Primus is one of the most fun and trippy concerts I've ever attended. Big fan, and they've aged like a fine wine. Side note: Failure's Fantastic Planet is a forgotten 90s space-grunge masterpiece concept album. If you haven't heard it, you definitely should give it a shot. They have a similar story to Primus in the sense that they took a long hiatus (even longer than Primus) and then released a great comeback album (Troy Van Leeuwen of QOTSA and A Perfect Circle fame also has origins as a live guitarist for Failure). Honestly the most underrated rock band I can think of.
My Les Claypool story. I am walking into the Aladdin in 1996 in Las Vegas to a Phish show. My friend and I see Les walking in the show. We go up to him and say, "Les, Les, hey Les!" He turns around and gives us the evil eye as if he had lasers coming out of his eyes. "Maybe that wasn't Les?" We thought. Well, at the end of the Phish show, Les comes out and jams with them for a historic hour. Phish, Les, Elvis impersonators, people lost their minds! Yes that was Les alright walking in the show that night. I will never forget it as he played the Jedi mindtrick card. ✌ (5 years earlier, I see Primus and Fishbone at the Aladdin with the seats being ripped out during the Fishbone set. Aladdin had to cut the power. Two different vibes but historic shows).
@For the Doggies Guitars I was at that show too and met Les after it ended. He was looking to find out where Greyboy Allstars were playing (they'd been following the Phish tour and played aftershow gigs all up and down the West Coast). I wasn't sure, but my buddy knew, and we all walked down the block and headed in together. One of the GBAs crew saw Les walking up to the venue, and waved him over to the private entrance. The guy was about to close the door on me and my buddy, but Les turned around and said, "They're with me." So in we went with Les into the Green Room and had a couple beers with him and the band, who I'd become friends with because I saw them at almost every afterparty, and then in walks Trey, Fish, and Mike. I can't really go into the rest on a public forum, but as my 1st time to Vegas, I had a VERY Vegas experience. lol
@@WallyPDoyle111 I heard about that night from a book I read and that party! Fun times. Legendary! An experience that must of been on a top 10 list as far as music goes! Cheers!!
The first band who pushed me to explore discographies. Their albums were the first I ever listened to by myself. They were the first artist with whom I could pick a random song, listen to it and instantly click with it.
Saw them open for Public Enemy/Anthrax. Great show. After the first couple of songs Les stepped up to the mic and says, "Hi! We're Metallica, really happy to be here." Bam! right into the next song.

With a wierd accent he’s trying to hide u can tell English is not his native language. It sounds like a bad reading of a bad translation of a Wikipedia page.
Les Claypool's side projects (not even just the musical ones) are a discussion all on their own. A focus on the different styles that each of their 3 most well known drummers brought to the band would be cool. Brain's high energy speediness, Herb's deep lumbering gorilla sound, and Jay's upbeat bouncy sort of playing all led to the creation of totally different style songs
...and from AntiPop, their re-recording of "The Heckler" at the very end track...after about a minute of silence after "On The Coattails Of A Dead Man", a not-so-subtle slam on Courtney Love... One of my fave Primus tunes... "The Heckler" that is...
I was just listening to it for the first time last week (despite it sitting there on my Winamp playlist for years, it's one of those things...) and it sounds fucking MASSIVE

- Larry Lalonde was formally trained by Joe Satriani - Les once tried out for Metallica - Les denies being a member of The Residents, but come on, man....that's totally him.
Cool introductory video, but I'd add some crucial points... 1. Primus' 'eccentric' sound was helped in its development by bands/artists like The Residents, Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention and Sun-Ra. 2. You really need to mention the most important collaborator on Antipop:- Tom Waits, also the voice of Tommy The Cat of course. 3. Larry 'Ler' Lalonde is the 'secret weapon' of the band, and the greatest guitarist in musical history. His relatively sparse playing on their records might confuse folk, but he is unbelievable, playing a mixture of Thrash/Metal, Jazz scales, Psychedelic Rock, Reggae licks, Prog-Rock, Bluegrass twang, Classical scales, Hawaiian Slide, and Folk music. Not to mention that he is the Unintentional Godfather of Death Metal, lol. And he was tutored by Satch!
I'll never forget this time back in day when "ripping" CD's to .mp3 files was pretty commonplace still. I was converting a bunch of CD's and during the tagging process there were several pre-defined tags you could use to describe the category of music for the ID3 tag. One of those categories was simply "Primus". I smiled so big when I saw that. It sort of said it all.
Larry LaLonde is like the Les Claypool of guitar. Conveniently, they work together in the same band! I find Larry's playing to be really overbearing at times, but when he's palatable, he fascinates me. I've never heard a guitar make the kinds of sounds he makes. I don't always like how heavy Primus gets, but when they're good, they're great!
Someone was praising Primus on a music site yesterday so I decided to check them out. I'm a British glam, post punk, darkwave, goth, shoegaze, trip hop, witch house type. With a musical palette like mine, a band like Primus isn't going to register on my rader, so I'd never heard them until today. I found them to be rather genius with a great knack for the comically absurd. Quite an interesting band all the way round actually.
Great stuff! Super excellent ! I've seen Primus a time or 2 . Opening for Rush back in 1992 ish. Amazing gig! OMG. What a memory. Primus and Rush. Together. A bass fan's dream! 4 strings that rule the world. yeah Primus was VERY memorable all right. from mtw in L.A. . Primus fan.

Tim is a god on the kit
andré pereira I named my cat Ler 😻. When I listen to Primus I concentrate on Ler because what DO you play with THAT rhythm section? Ler and his pedals on full gain!
CJ Live Right on!! That is the question ,my friend, and what a rhythm section!
Eheh,cool name for a kat.
Jordan Aleksandre Yes he is!
God bless primus and rush
Trick question brah, Neil Peart IS God!
THE PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!
I sense great musical knowlege in you.
Dante Escalante Indeed bro!!
Neil killed his daughter
I love Primus so much! Fell in love with them at their epic Bonnaroo show, and never looked back
Primus sucks
I never heard a band with better sound. Failures new stuff is great too.
Loving the new failure albums.
Not enough mentioning of tim Alexander the herb
or bryan "brain" mantia
Cory Thompson Probably Jay Lane. Primus has had some exceptional drummers!

For the Doggies Guitars Primus and Fish Bone at the same show sounds epic. on that day you were blessed with some serious funk.
@@shaunbryan3421 It wasn't Fishbone, but that would've been awesome too! It was Phish, and it was a fantastic show!
I can't really go into the rest on a public forum, but as my 1st time to Vegas, I had a VERY Vegas experience. lol
@@WallyPDoyle111 Fishbone and Primus were 5 years earlier at the Aladdin. Crazy ass show!
@@WallyPDoyle111 I heard about that night from a book I read and that party! Fun times. Legendary! An experience that must of been on a top 10 list as far as music goes! Cheers!!
I would love to see a conversation between Les Claypool and Maynard lol
The first band who pushed me to explore discographies. Their albums were the first I ever listened to by myself. They were the first artist with whom I could pick a random song, listen to it and instantly click with it.
Cool.
Sounds like what Jethro Tull did to me.
And I instantly became a Primus fan since I first heard them in '95.
Saw them open for Public Enemy/Anthrax. Great show. After the first couple of songs Les stepped up to the mic and says, "Hi! We're Metallica, really happy to be here." Bam! right into the next song.
I expect nothing less from Les
He was in the frame to replace Cliff Burton in 86, imagine what Metallica would sound like with him in it.....
The Brown Album is literally my favorite Primus album. I'm a huge fan of Claypool but I honestly think that album was his finest work.
Les Claypool's singing sounds like a hillbilly Weird Al....
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. :)
Actually a Weird Al / Primus collab sounds like an awesome idea.
@@RCAvhstape my mind would explode
You mean he isn't ?
Sailing the seas of cheese is 1 of the greatest albums ever made in my opinion. I remember being totally blown away the first time I heard it and I’ve been a huge fan ever since
Les Claypool,if you ever read this.
I am a huge fan of Primus.Your music will never get stale. It will always remain fresh to me no matter how long I listen...When the 90s ended, great music began to end as well. There are many people that want great bands like Primus to make their way back into the music industry.
Your dirty nasty music is the best.
We miss you Primus!!!!!!
Brown Album is underrated imo. Such a solid album from start to finish.
It is literally my #1 favorite Primus album by far.
@@albenmurcia4716 And yet that's one of my top 3 songs on the album.
@@the-NightStar well to each their own i guess. Idk why just something about that song bothers me. The brown album is great though, love me some coddingtown and kalamazoo
its my favorite! puddin' taine!
"Primus is tool for hillbillies!" 🤣 Brown album was my favorite up there before tales as my favorite when I got into them in '99/'00. Great picks lie!
@JezBollah 667 didn't know hillbillies could be from england
@JezBollah 667 eh.. 3/ 10 bait there fella. You're some stale ass bait sir. Nuh-uh. Tsk tsk.😔
Yellow Magic Orchestra is waay underappreciated in the west, electronic pioneers and all. I'd love to see an episode on them
The brown album is criminally underrated
I'm pretty sure I saw your channel like a year ago and it had NOWHERE NEAR 250k subs. good work man.
Will you do “understanding Smashing Pumpkins”?
Yes!!!!
I already understand them, Corgan is a douche, Darcy is gone, and Zero
@@Tangent_Frank fckng true
@@Tangent_Frank I dont know much about Smashing Pumpkins but I started listening to them earlier this year and was digging it, what makes Corgan a douche? I'm just curious
Herb Humbug whats there to understand
I’ve been waiting for this episode!!
Why didn't you talk about the band Sausage? They're the original Primus and came out with a great album.
Understanding Primus is very simple and it takes only 1 word GENIUSES
Another primus video would be great but really it's claypool who deserves his own "understanding" video man.
Had a Rio mp3 player and one of the genres was "Primus".
You might need to do one on all the side projects that Les has done over the years.
80's??? Their first album was released in 89. They're quintessential 90's, not 80's.
Probably because most of this info is jacked from wiki for views instead of actual care for music. Some bastards in life man
James Bane They started in the 80s so they are a 80s band
@@alicethemaliceofficial they produced music in the 90s, making them a 90s band.
I would categorize them as a ‘90s band. The Beatles started off in ‘57 and you don’t consider them as such.
He could’ve accidentally said “80s” instead of “90s”
One must know their sense of humor and appreciate their talent as individuals.. if you took each one of them and put them in any other band, they each would be the most talented in that band.. they are pure genius if you step back and really think about it..
I miss their old website. It was full of fun stuff. Lots of my days in high school were spent in that webpage.
Also im pretty sure their first band name was Sausage and not primate or primus.
Heyyyy great band! Les Claypool is my number one bass playing idol. Also my dad named my cat Tommy after their song “Tommy the Cat.”
Never clicked on a video so fast.
Could´ve just read the Wikipedia article, it´s basically the same info
The Brown Album is definitely my favorite. Brain's drumming is INSANE, and they had the best mic setup on the kit for that record.
drxwzee the man, the myth, the pseudo mexican
agreed 🔥
My favorite track from Antipop was "Dirty Drowning Man" produced by Stuart Copeland.
Bodacious man, Bodacious.
Wow im extremely early. Have you done one for The Velvet Underground?
Yes
I'll never forget my ex roommate turn me on to Primus I thought they were really cool and strange like Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention was then my ex-roommate took me to a church where they played Christian heavy metal I I've always remembered that time in my life and I'm internally grateful to my ex-roommate for turning me on the Primus they're one of the best man's I've ever heard✌😎
"Those Damned Blue Collar Tweakers" and "Tragedy's a Comin'" are my all time favorite tunes.
I was lucky to see them in Eureka CA! I was so blown away especially at that time, I was in 10th grade and was just getting deep into Primus
Saw them live last year for their Desaturating tour, they still got it, though they've changed their sound over the years I still love listening to all of it and hope they do another album.
Just love “wounded Knee” of Pork Soda I love instrumentals..
I have air xylophoned
I used to be an adventurer like you...
I think you should talk about Toto and how unique they made 80s Pop sound.
but they didn't.
@@rickeyryan303 If you paid attention to their music you would know that they did.
these videos are just a guy reading wikipedia, nearly verbatim......wtf
For real. And you can tell its disingenuous cuz he doesnt know how to pronounce todd huth... Or "debuted" for that matter
Their first album came out in 89 and all of their hits are in the 90s yet he called them an 80s band...
Wish I’d come up with this monetization scheme… About what topic do you suppose I could read Wikipedia into a mic over a slideshow of still photos?
If you read Wikipedia's article about "10,000 days" there isn't a single word about "Wings for Mary pt 2" and it's a sin for any Tool fan not talking about this song when the subject is 10,000 days...
Guess how much time he spent talking about this song on his Tool's video...
I remember in my youth, I would always be amazed by their music videos. Southbound Pachyderm music video blew my mind as a kid.
"Primus is Tool for hillbillies" that made me laugh so hard.
I like Primus' cover of Jerry Reed's song "Amos Moses"! It's classic! 🤠👍🏿👈
...and from AntiPop, their re-recording of "The Heckler" at the very end track...after about a minute of silence after "On The Coattails Of A Dead Man", a not-so-subtle slam on Courtney Love... One of my fave Primus tunes... "The Heckler" that is...
I’ve seen almost every Claypool band play live . They’re all outstanding.
No one has, no one ever will....sound like them. They are a genre of their own
Frizzle Fry is my favorite
Punchbowl is my favorite
This and the Tool videos are the best of your chanel, ohhhh, Primus.
Sausage was a great clay pool side project in the early 90s
I was just listening to it for the first time last week (despite it sitting there on my Winamp playlist for years, it's one of those things...) and it sounds fucking MASSIVE
Sausage had all the members of Primus in it
Here's to the man who holsters the gun. For it has taken, his only son!
@@apatheticallylethargic4639 Todd Huth was in an early version of the band. Jay Lane was on the Sausage record, Holy Mackerel, Frog Brigade, and played live on all those tours including the "solo" Claypool stuff as well. Think he filled in for Tim Alexander in later years? Im going off memories of all the Cds and shows I've seen, not memorizing Claypool's wiki page like some of these lame asses
- Larry Lalonde was formally trained by Joe Satriani
- Les once tried out for Metallica
- Les denies being a member of The Residents, but come on, man....that's totally him.
My mom used to read me The Rainbow Goblins. I need to hear this album now
Mr. Bungle is really good too, formed in the mid 80s like Primus
4 strings that rule the world. yeah Primus was VERY memorable all right.
from mtw in L.A. . Primus fan.
