INFO: Them Crooked Vultures is a band made up of Josh Homme (Qotsa), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). They got together in 2009 and formed a hard-rock and blues inspired band that generated a lot of hype during its time. Since it's close to 9 years since they released their debut album, with little activity from the band ever since, i decided to put this video together for anyone who wants a nostalgic trip back in time. For fans who want to remember one of the best super-bands of the last decade.

David Grohl was a huge reason he ever got famous. Dave was a big Kyuss fan and brought them out to open for Nirvana. Metallica heard them on this tour, and booked them to play the Australia tour as well. Josh met a ton of key players in these early days (mid to late 90s).
There's a cool free documentary on youtube about this story, as well as the larger music scene that Josh is from. I believe it is called "Desert Age" or something. You'd probably dig it.

Yeah that's crazy to think of. Most of the people watching my videos are either 18 - 25 yo, or 25 - 35 yo.
Those in the latter group probably remember him just as much from both the groups. Dave first started to become
a known persona when he made the Foos. Kurt took most of the spotlight back when Nirvana was still around. So
it's not that odd that he's more famous for being in the Foos.

I remember back in 2011 I first listened to it. I was just getting into Foo Fighters because of Wasting Light. Then I saw somewhere that Dave played drums with some dude names Josh Homme and JON PAUL FRIGGIN JONES. I quickly googled them, and the first song that came through was Elephant... and it just didn't grab me. I was expecting something much more commercial. So I kinda forgot about it.
6 years later I re-discovered them, after broadening my likes and the music I listened to. I relistened to Elephant and DAMN. The twists and turns of that song, the drum groove, just about everything. Then I listened to the whole album and I came a few times.

I was in a similar place a few years ago. I only ever listened to classical music and I hated everything else. I was going through a real rough patch in life and I was never happy- and one day MCR turned up in my UA-cam recommended and I listened to it. I hated it at first, but I kept coming back for more and soon enough I was addicted to this new world of rock music. And that's what got me playing the guitar! Thank you My Chem :)))

Ok I can't believe I found this video so late. Them Crooked Vultures is one of my all time favorite albums ever. I disagree with people that think it sounds a lot like Songs for the Deaf, maybe a little on the surface but TCV songs are so much more layered and dynamic. I remember the first time I noticed there was another instrument doing an amazing riff during the guitar solo from "Scumbag Blues". I remember how my heart was beating hearing the intro and outro of "Elephants". And I remember my sheer confusion over what was happening during "Interlude with Ludes". I could go on and on about this record fr.
One thing I find really telling is that both Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters released the best or close to the best albums of their careers right after Homme and Grohl did TCV. Wasting Light is my favorite Foo record and they really have not come close to reaching that level again ever since. And ...Like Clockwork is just leagues ahead of any other Queens album for me. I really believe they could come back, do a TCV double record, this time not worrying about physical sales and such as much, and it just being freaking amazing. And then Foo and Queens coming fresh in four years with freaking bangers to boot.
    One can only dream man.

I love this band so much, and is one of the very few bands I really feel like I own, because I saw it being born, and by that time I was already very into foo fighters and queens (i was also your age by then), so one can imagine how hyped I got as soon as I knew they were teaming up. So much has happened to these guys (specially josh and dave) after they parted, so although its unfortunate they havent released another album in nearly a decade, it's totally understandable. BUT, after the recent Raconteurs reunion, I believe everything is possible now.
Very well put together video! I totally understand why you said it's not a masterpiece. I can aggree that they didn't mean to reinvent the wheel with the project, but the whole thing is so well constructed, lyrically, melodically and narratively (the super badass tarantino western vibe), that it really makes me think that this album does lean towards being a masterpiece.
And before I finish this: FUCKING "Elephants"!!!!!! This track is crazy. I can smell guts and blood everytime I listen to it.

    • @LieLikesMusic
      @LieLikesMusic  5 років тому +1

Miracles can happen ;) Yeah that Raconteurs reunion surprised me as well man. That came outta the blue.
Thanks for the kind words and for enjoying the video btw. It means a lot to me. And sure enough, if i didn't
focus so much on NOT being biased i would probably say it's a masterpiece too. But y'know. There's probably
a dusin more records released in 2009 that were better that i can't think of right now. Or haven't heard of. Cheers!
