Caleb I highly doubt you will read this but I love the show, helped steer me back in the right direction with my own finances a bit and I saw a comment suggesting family audit… I think this would be a great concept and would definitely harvest a lot of attention as most bad spending habits are inherited… if u ever read this just consider it man, u already got the perfect setup and can just build on ot

Yes, this I do not get, especially at that interest rate. If you put 8500 into the cheapest available new car (Kia? Hyundai? not sure anymore haven't car shopped in ages, but when I did, it was things like Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Accent, etc.) I bet you would get a lower interest rate, even with awful credit, and would get a much lower mayment and likely higher gas mileage along with cheaper insurance. I do not get the whole SUV craze (or crossover or whatever), I am a budget car person, the smaller the better, the cheaper the better. And I have gotten plenty of good miles and good life on my cars.

I work in financial aid, help students with their FAFSA, and every time I can convince a student NOT to get loan when they don’t need it I feel like a huge weight was lifted of my shoulders.
Some parents really be advising to their kids to take the loans, to take everything the feds offer not knowing the real impact on the student who is irresponsible and doesn’t know how to manage money.
Don’t get me wrong, a lot of students need them and those I try to give them as much info about how loans work as I can.
After working in academic support, you wouldn’t believe the amount of people that think finiancal aid does not need to be repaid. The name is misleading for first gen’s
I worked in financial aid too and what really pained me was those predatory Sally Mae loans… the tuition at the community college was 67 a credit hour and I understand not everyone has the financial capacity to pay even 67ch but there are better ways to go about it then private loans!

I’m a professor and I always ask my students at the beginning of the term if they know how much this class costs. It’s ALWAYS crickets.
I explain that my class costs around $1000 plus supplies. Then I tell them to not pay $1000 plus supplies to fuck around and not get an A.

I like that as well. Lots of people seem to want to scapegoat a boyfriend, or parent, or whatever.
The "everything will be fine" mentality is definitely a slippery slope. It makes sense to try to have a positive attitude but not if it causes you to excuse reality.
I feel like most people in my life have that mentality. Like my Mom will say I'll be fine and I need to have faith in God when I talk about being worried about my finances. But because of a stupid debt I have, I'm not able to put extra away for retirement and it'll take 3 more years to pay it off. I think people don't want their loved ones to be stressed but it also causes more problems if they manage to convince that loved one that it's not a big deal. They'll continue to do that stupid thing and dig themselves deeper in the hole.
@@sprint7412 God also wants to see action. My wife and I have had this conversation a lot and there is a difference between trusting God and tempting God. If you work towards something in faith to help get you out of the position I believe God will help you. However, if you make no changes can God really help you if you are not willing to accept his help by making a change?
@@RobertSorenson4991 Yeah, I know God doesn't give help unless a person is trying to do better which I am trying. I even managed to get a higher position at my work that included a pay raise and I've been using that extra money just to pay off the debt faster. It's just when I try to talk about my struggles every one around me says I'll be okay or it'll work out. I think my Mom says I need to have faith in God because she really doesn't want me to be stressed. Thing is though I've also noticed other people being told the same things even though it seems like they aren't trying to make changes. They'll continue to eat fast food or go on out of town trips, say they're broke and have a lot of debt, then people around them say "it'll be ok" or "it'll work out".

I am officially out of consumer debt. I have had credit cards and been paying off the balance for a years but I have always needed to use the credit card to be able to make it to the next month because I used a bit too much of my money. This week…all my credit cards are zero and I have enough money to pay all my bills and a minor emergency. I am not dependent on credit cards for anything and all my balances are zero!

I love how all these young people flit off to vacations all the time in their cards and can’t understand that all that money isn’t free…. It has to be paid back. Good grief.
"I get rewards when I purchase" the amount of people don't realize you only get rewards if you pay off your balance is truly disturbing.
YES - I have a card that I use for this purpose, where I get 5% back on specific categories of spending. But the interest rate is 15%, so I'm only saving money because it gets paid off every month. Because 15 > 5.
The interest payments definitely surpassed whatever “rewards” she got
I get points with my card. You buy stuff in certain categories and get a % back in points. When you have 2000 points or a multiple of 2000 you can trade the points for $20 for each 2000 points. I never carry a balance on my card and only spend on it when I can pay back right after using it. That way I get free money with my card
No you don't even when I carried a balance I still get paid the rewards for the purchases I made. They way you make it sound like it's as if I never recieved them.
The tricky thing about such reward cards: people are more likely to spend, and more likely to spend higher amounts when it's just a swipe of a card. That alone already eats up those juicy 5%, unless someone belongs to the rare exception of folks that can resist this psychological trap.
Most won't, hence companies make bigger profits even if those X% rewards are taken into consideration.

Sadly both of these behaviors are taught in childhood. If people don't see their parents modeling financial responsibility they will have no basis to understand what that behavior looks like. If people don't see their parents taking accountability for their own life, they will have no capacity to understand how to do that. This goes far beyond finance; this is why teachers get threatened by kids' parents for dishing out bad grades, this is why people don't even understand how to find and keep employment. If you have even basic levels of responsibility these days jobs will fast track you for management because the skill is so rare.

Hey Caleb, love your channel and what you do. Since finding the show a few months ago, I have made so much better progress than I was alone. I was up to 13k in CC debt with 12 cards between my wife and I. All 30%. Since opening them we have lost 13,000 in interest (your show taught me to go calculate this and track it!) and we now have paid off 3 of the card with the snowball method (no emergency fund right now but we are military so I feel like we are a bit safer there because AER exists and the debt is burying us.) and now we have only 9k in CC debt and still hacking at it. We applied to be on the show and I hear you yelling at me in my head all the time lol. I even went out and got a job at dominos just to make extra money on top of our income to keep attacking (our household income is now like 130k a year!) and we plan to be out of CC debt by end of year then save up 10k emergency fund, payoff RV (horrible decision years ago) and save up 40k for a house downpayment when my wife retires in 10 years. Thank you so much for this show. I'm not perfect according to your rules but I'm much better and slowly improving more by changing lifestyle bit by bit. We can do it. Anyone can do it. Thank you so much. Our 3 kids won't be responsible for us when we are old because of you, and they will be thankful for your show because of that as well.

We bought my car that I’ve now driven for 7 years for $4k and my wife’s car (which is much nicer) that she’s now driven for 5 years for $7k, we make well over 6 figures, literally gets us from point A to point B… and to top it all off, they are both older Lexus suvs, so dependable, Toyota parts. People just fall for car debt traps so much!
I think it depends on the area, they are from Austin. In the last year I was looking for a car and I was looking at some for 12000 that had been hit.

The sooner you stop blaming your parents, the sooner you can get your life together. My parents got divorced when I was a kid and they both had drug/alcohol problems since I was a toddler. My dad got custody of me and my brother. They are 59 and 60 with a lot of debt and zero retirement. I have made it my goal as an adult to stay out of debt and slowly build retirement. Was healthy enough to join the Air Force to get my degree paid for. Read books and watch UA-cam videos to find a different way to do things. For so many years I did not travel and shopped at the Goodwill. Now, I can travel and I shop at Walmart for most clothing and home items so I can travel and stay at home with my daughter. Get creative and do things a different way. You’ve gotta make the choice to be different than your family!
I sincerely hope OP sees this comment and reads it. This right here is living proof your parents can't stop you from still living a financially independent life IF you're willing to learn from outside sources and educate yourself.

My college professor had meth addicted parents in a house full of kids. You could NOT tell by her demeanor or outlook on life. She has her masters, working on phd, has a family, raising them as a Christian household. It can be done if you want it bad enough.

Idk when people use the excuse that “no one taught me” I just remember that every single human being was born here without knowledge of anything (my best friend just had a baby and has to teach her how to eat… THE MOST BASIC OF LIFE BASICS). Right?? Like even before i discovered financial audit , i was smart enough to not max out my credit card, don’t spend too much on it, and pay it at the end of every month. From there I asked the adults in my life more questions, was still confused, but i knew not to spend more than what I can afford. If i don’t got , i don’t got it. Lately I’ve been making myself get more educated, i bought a few books, watching financial audit helped me figure out a budget, i really don’t understand the excuses

I hate borrowing money in general, hence the idea of taken on debts is foreign to me.
Worse: the idea of paying said debt with interest is straight up disgusting to me.
I get the logic behind going into debt to buy or build a house, that one can make a lot of sense (i'm not in that position anyways).
The same holds true for going into debt to build up a business, or maybe go to college IF you already know you are good at whatever you intent to study.
But borrowing money to spend it on BS? Nope, that's a big screaming NOPE!

This is a mentality that should more or less be normal if you learned how to spend your frickin pocket money as a kid, and later on earned your own money by yourself. I mean money you earned yourself feels better and for a lack of a better word heavier in your pockets.

Multiple times she has claimed that her parents convinced her to take on the debt and they would pay it off. After A LITTLE digging we come to find out that no, they convinced her to take out the debt with the idea that she would be employed and be able to pay it back herself. The lies we tell ourselves… 😔

A little later on when talking about a CC she tells one lying excuse, then Caleb points out it’s BS so she switches to a totally different lying excuse and looks shocked when changing stories doesn’t work and Caleb still holds her accountable. She isn’t used to anybody not believing one or two BS stories she throws at them and actually keeping her accountable.
It was such a stupid blatant lie. I'd hate to be in a relationship with someone who makes bone headed moves and then tells others it was my fault.

I hate Door Dash. During the peak of the pandemic, we weren't doing anything else/going out. We didn't have any loss of income, so we'd treat ourselves to delivery once or twice a week as some small connection to the outside world. It's terrible. Since things are back, we probably have ordered like....10 times since 2021. You're exactly right, with how long it takes to get to your house, the sauces separate, things get cold, soggy. I can go to the Thai place, tip 20%, get apps, iced tea, and it's still cheaper than Door Dashing just an entree. It's TOTALLY not worth it.
Door dashing McDonalds seems like the worst. If those fries have been out of the fryer more than 3 minutes, they are garbage IMO
I would like to challenge the Financial Audit team to find a guest who will say, "Yes, last month was absolutely typical, and I don't have a long explanation."
Eh. The hard part is that life happens. For instance, I keep aiming for a “typical” month but next week I have a friend moving in temporarily and my monthly expenses are going to go up for about six months. Next week I have a road trip that I planned months ago. Last month I got a couple of overtime shifts. Stuff just happens and I’ve come to accept that there is no “typical”.

One month it’s $50 smog + $250 for car registration renewal, next month hybrid battery on my car goes out - $650 for the refurbished battery + rental car costs so I can keep working, $150 for diagnostic fee, next month it’s $200 for guard card training and certs. Every month there is *something* in the multiple hundred $$ range lol that’s why I shoot for bringing in at least 2K more a month then my base monthly expenses. That way I can cover the extras while still having stuff left for savings.

This last pay period i didnt get a paycheck because of a problem with our payroll system (we are going to get double on our next check), but whereas in the past i would have totally freaked out, i just dipped into the emergency fund and i will replenish when my double check comes... HAVING AN EMERGENCY FUND IS AN EMERGENCY! I wouldnt have survived without it!

I think you need a whiteboard or use one of the monitors to write how much interest the guest is losing each month. so when they try to justify things like bleached hair or a cruise, you can have the number visible to them and you can ask them if it's worth losing $200/ month. We know everyone who comes on refuses to look at their statements, this will hit them hard. Or just tell them the total they lose each month if they don't fix their spending.

yeah that's the wild thing about all of this - I was taught absolutely nothing, but debt scared me, all the commercials, all the people complaining about bills, just by proxy I knew better

Personally, I really hate the new lighting. The bright lights gave it more of a friendly, helpful vibe. This feels like an interrogation and that is not necessarily what I'd like to see for most people on the show.

I'm sorry to hear ya'll got shortchanged in school, but this Gen Xr and 600 of his classmates did indeed get financial education in high school. It was called Home Economics. It covered 30% rent, credit card interest rates and finance charges, personal loans, student loans and balancing your checkbook. We also made muffins and sewed pillows. 😂
Yep, we did too. And while I did get into some financial problems back in the 90's, I now have good savings and have plenty of money in the bank. When I watch these videos, it's just proof that the United States needs to bring Home Economics classes back to schools. Adult children now have no idea.

I took HomeEc in school as well. Unfortunately, all I learned was how to make pancakes and do laundry. The important shit I had to learn by experience.
I did home ec back in 1987 and they taught sewing and cooking, but nothing about financial education.

Caleb, not sure if you'll see this but I had a suggestion. I think most guests conflate their Credit Score with some kind of "Social-Financial" Score, which is why they are so reluctant to do anything that may damage it, such as closing their accounts. In America, there are so many commercials about improving your credit score, you may be pre-qualified for such and such, and a lot of representations that good credit = good life. Maybe you should drive the point home that credit scores are not the end all of your financial life and that sometimes we have to tear down poor decisions to rebuild into a stronger score.
This. And most of these guests are doing other things that are negatively impacting their score anyways, like missing payments, having accounts in collections, and having a high utilization rate. If you’re doing those things, closing an account is the least of your problems lol. It’s such a weird hill these guests are willing to die on.
I don't really know if that would make sense though because half the time they are messing their credit-up either way. I think it's just because especially in the last few years social media has talked about how you should never close your credit cards and you want to have multiple lines etc. And they think that closing the accounts will hurt more than maxing them out and having late payments. But your theory could definitely be right!
It is really weird to see these guest do everything they can to boost their credit score, while at the same time barely having enough money for food.LIke bro, what do you plan on using that credit for? You're drowning with the debt you're already in, how will adding more debt help your situation? I am definitely no financial expert, but every single time a guess brings up the credit score, the only thing in my mind is, "Here it comes, the credit score...when you've got thousands in credit card debt and tens of thousands in student loan debt..." I am seriously starting to believe Americans have literally no idea what the credit score actually means.
This is one of the financial myths that Caleb actually has a decent little spiel for… but he doesn’t give it any more. Explaining credit score is just a tool.

I’m grateful to my Mom for passing on good financial literacy to me. She told me to use the credit card like a debit card, never buy things I don’t have the money to afford now, etc. It seems basic to me now, but from this show it seems like so many others accidentally shoot themselves in the foot by not doing the same.
The kicker is, I only found out this year that my mom is NOT a credit card person. She didn’t have one for a decade until I added her as a user on mine. I’m grateful that she passed on good information to me even though she herself could not use them responsibly at the time.
I really feel for this guest. Her debt has snowballed and she doesn’t seem to have e understood what she was doing. Her crying really got me. Heartfelt.

My sister never stopped blaming our parents and she died broke, absolutely broke.
I was born in 1960's to immigrant parents relocated to London UK . They taught me the value of paying cash and making savings from my income . It is not an innate skill . We are seeing the consequences . Thanks Ma & Dad

One thing I love about this channel is its willingness to try so many things with the videos (thumbnail,editing style, lightning, types of guest, etc.) to see if the audience loves it. Caleb and the crew are killing it! 🙌🏽
Unfortunately all these things have made the show worse. The lighting just makes everyone look worse, the editing is jarring and adds nothing, and the thumbnails are embarrassing and sometimes offensive. Some serious lack of integrity, artistic and otherwise, has really impacted my personal enjoyment of the show. I’m sure there is the argument that these things somehow improve the algorithm or whatever, and that is sad.

I'm a software developer and it's always been a bit hard to find jobs in the field, especially if you live in an area that isn't very tech centered. My advice, and this is what I did, is to see if there are any state jobs that need software developers. They don't pay as much as private companies, but you'll definitely learn a lot. Plus, state jobs tend to have much better benefits.

To be honest, when Caleb opened that whole line of questioning about the medical bill from the dentist not being paid, and she kept skirting around the question and giving illogical answers about not having money when she clearly did, I think I know exactly what the problem was and why she didn't pay it.
She would have rather used the $200.00 to go out to eat or buy something material for herself because paying a bill doesn't bring any enjoyment. That's why I personally believe she did that. I used to have horrendous finances, and so when I would occasionally be faced with very small bills that I needed to pay off (under $200.00) I simply wouldn't do it, because I would rather have used that $200 for something enjoyable rather than having put it towards a responsibility that brought me no joy or happiness. That's the mentality. And it's embarrassing because it's incredibly immature and childlike and it makes sense that she didn't want to be upfront with Caleb about it (definitely should have been, obviously)
That's just my entire opinion on it, not a mind reader, so I could very well be wrong. Just coming from someone who has made poor choices in the past and my own mentality as to why I behaved that way (which I am very disappointed in and ashamed of, but I am much better now).
Hey Caleb! I want to thank you for your videos because they ease a lot of financial stress that I have had since I was a child. My partner was just laid off a little more than a week ago, and while he feels terrible for not having a job, I'm not worried financial because we have a healthy emergency fund as well as general savings that we were using for tuition and a down payment fund. He's is also so amazing and applied for more than 500 jobs over the past week, is getting multiple interviews scheduled, and even had an in-person interview this morning!
This is a girl that I actually see getting something out of this. She needs guidance and has made some terrible decisions but I have a feeling she wants to do better. I really hope she follows through.

It's both. To suggest it must exclusively be one issue is ridiculous.
The sample size of this show is far too small by several orders of magnitude to prove anything 'conclusively'. If anything, this show displays that financial issues can be borne of any number of aspects of one's life. It's called nuance.
This comment really just shows a lack of critical thinking on your part. So caught up in holding people accountable that you end up running into ridiculous conclusions. Desperate to make yourself feel better by judging others as harshly as possible to the point that you're willing to delude yourself.
