      So personally I have never owned a credit card, never needed one, but should I actually get one to start my credit. I'm decent at budgeting and absolutely hate owing money on anything so I always pay anything quickly. But everyone I talk to says to get one. I know that it goes against what is said often on this channel from what I have seen. Looking for advice on if there is any reason to get one and make small purchases on it or should I just stay where I am and keep savings for things?

    • @tonynguyen4278
      @tonynguyen4278 4 місяці тому +10

      @@RealCryo Nothing wrong with having or getting a credit card. You sound like you would be the type that pay off your balance in full every month. You aren't charged interest if you pay the full statement balance before the due dates. By doing that you can benefit from the rewards and cash back // points offered by said company. Building a credit history will help you whenever you need a loan for a mortgage or car. Those are huge purchases you may not have the cash for outright so a credit history is important. Just remember, pay your FULL statement balance and you'll be good!

    • @cronus9981

      @@RealCryo Caleb isnt against credit cards, hes against not paying them off every month.
      If you know you will pay it off it can be a nice fund for random fun purchases up to and including rhe occasional vacation.
      If you miss even one payment or leave a balance even one time it CAN cost more that its worth.
      It is entirely dependent on you personal ability to look at credit as debt and not "extra money"

    “At least I’ll die happy?” Don’t count on your bad habits to result in early death! My dad said he’d rather eat trash food and die young and happy, but instead he’s had almost thirty years of pain, poor health, and debt.

      I dont know why people always assume they'll just instantly drop dead from their bad habits. Take diabetes for example. You spend your final years or decade or two of your life slowly losing your extremities to necrosis. First its a toe or two, then its your foot, then its anything below the knee. Thats a very long time to spend in pain and miserable

      The die happy philosophy is so funny.
      Do people think they’ll be dying happy at a young age, desperately clinging to life, because they ate that cheeseburger 25 years ago.
      Go for a walk, see the world, meet people, treat your body well, and then die happy.

    Hold up do I have this straight?? She went from a 3 hour daily commute to a 40 minute daily commute, and her rent increased by only like $150 bucks. • @ALonesomeStreet
      @ALonesomeStreet 4 місяці тому +103

      I honestly think that her commute was preventing her from eating more, and now that her commute is so short she has time to get home and decide to stop and get something to eat (hence cost of living “going up”). Obviously there’s more than that, but being stuck in traffic for 3hrs just means 2.3hrs that she didn’t have she has back to make bad choices.

    Just FYI for you all, when people eat, drink, smoke to excess and then say "at least I'll die happy," they are horribly wrong. There are worse things than death, and these habits make you more likely to experience them. Vascular disease, diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, organ failure, cancer, emphysema, joint issues, early onset arthritis, all can afflict your for decades. Having a stroke at 65 and being completely debilitated for the next 15 years isnt "dying happy."

It sucks if your company has a EHS person riding you but wont give you the time to work compliantly and won't spend on maintenence, but severe safety violations can result in fines or stop work orders that financially impact everyone at the company.

Then I noticed how it was adding up in $ and calories. So I changed to buying a $1 lotto on those days. Or as I think of it, a ticket to the daydream of what I would do with the money if I won. Except walking to the store to get the lotto was further than getting Starbies or candy from the vending machine so I maybe spend $3 or less a month on the lottery, which is less than 1 Starbies drink.

    Caleb, speaking as a person who has struggled with weight all my life (I'm 63 now), I very much appreciate the sensitive way you approached that. It was especially effective in using your own story to relate. That was not fat shaming at all. Also, I am noticing her hair thinning in the front. She may be dealing with PCOS which makes it difficult to lose weight.

      Does he have these conversations with thin people that are eating out and having treats, too?
      That's why I do consider it fat shaming.

      He didn’t shame her, she shouldn’t be doing it from a financial standpoint and it definitely serves to motivate her further from that bad spending considering it’s detrimental to her health. He doesn’t mention that for thin people because thin people aren’t suffering from weight problems. She mentions herself she has back pain and I’m sure her weight contributes to that in some capacity if not entirely.

      @@melynn44brain-dead take. For starters he definitely gets pissed at skinny ppl for over spending on BS food. He was actually extra nice with this lady, and she's by far the biggest person he's had on the show.

      It is by design. Fiat incentivizes to spend and not save. It's the reason for inflation, even though the fed couldn't tell you why it's necessary. Bitcoin fixes this.

    I felt bad for her. She seems like a sweet but very naive young girl that just needs to learn.
    Unfortunately if parents treat their kids too much growing up they think it’s normal and continue to treat themselves as adults.
    It takes a while to realize how to adult.

    I'm always so impressed by your empathy and kindness. I think it helps the WHAT ARE YOU DOING sink in a bit better. You're such a good dude, I appreciate you. And shoutout to our girl having the courage to get ripped apart for the entertainment of others. But also... I'm pretty decent with finances, but I learn so much and it prompts me to look more closely and think about how I spend and budget.

    So happy to see the if you make the minimum payment this is how hard you’re gonna get screwed section. An extra $70 saves all them years and interest.
    When you make a payment, pay the interest and the payment.

    Caleb, you may think about getting a set of medical shears to cut metal credit cards. They are pretty inexpensive and can pretty easily cut a penny in half.
