Mariah is hilarious. I love that she's really comfortable with herself. A few years ago, she was really self-conscious and we would not have seen an interview like this. If anyone thinks she is "overtalking", watch a video of her being interviewed in 2016/17 and you will see how she gave 1 line answers and was very visibly sad.
Why was she sad? I haven't kept up with her at all but she seemed so bubbly here.
@@misterbennnn she had a bunch of stuff going on, she has bipolar disorder so there was that revelation and i dont think she was taking care of herself. Also her manager was quite a horrible person and did a bunch of stuff and used her for fame. She seemed like a shell of herself back then. Then in 2017/2018, she fired the manager and suddenly we could see the difference before and after.
In this interview with Steven and she just seems really on the defense. And kind of difficult to interview. I almost feel like she’s fighting Steven every step of the way.

I totally agree with you. Since the pandemic she really became very comfortable with herself. I guess the process of writing her book really helped her in so many ways.
Nowadays she’s very relaxed, fun and focused more on having a great time than portraying the superstar that she is.
Her stance on faith 3:46 and the verse gave me chills. Idc what people say about Mariah but she’s a true star and a lovely person. I love this woman!

Mariah is such an adorable Diva who clearly likes to have her own way. Quite a strong personality and difficult to box in. Stephen definitely had his hands full. Love her. Keep on shining queen.
Mariah is Queen of Tangents and Colbert doesn't know her well enough to feel comfortable reigning in someone of her level of celebrity. I hope she comes back though because Mariah living her fantasy versus sarcastic but well-meaning Stephen could be a great combo once they are more comfortable around each other.

As a musician, I have to appreciate the band adaptability at the end if that was off the cuff.
Not a musician here, so was really impressed at their ability to take a cue and mprovise on spot as a group.

The band did something pretty incredible at the end there. They certainly had a practiced song to use as the outro, but once they started jamming with Mariah Carey they filled it out (with harmony nicely layered in!) and used that instead. It may not be the most complicated little riff, but they got it to a great place instantly. I'm sure it took no more than a little nod from Louis to confirm that this was the new plan and it all came together seamlessly.
A band that can improv together is one of the most magical things on earth.
that woman was so populars when I was in Junior High School, I'm now 43 and she is still full of life, energy and super pretty. Hasn't aged a day. I know for a fact she was a huge influence on one of my classmates, Nelly Furtado.

She didn’t really answer the questions though. She seem to be on the defense quite a bit. Stephen was incredibly patient with her. She had to of known she was doing the Colbert questionnaire.

I see a lot more youth in Mariah in this interview compared to any of the interviews she's done for many years! She seems lighter, much more relaxed, more spontaneous and less uptight! Even her makeup compliments her here, and there were so many times where her voice sounded like it used to sound in the rainbow era.. eg 2:30

In reality, she is an extremely talented, and very introverted and insecure and self-conscious person. Like Prince was in a lot of interviews, when they don't have the cushion of music to protect them and its just them speaking, it's awkward. It's especially so now, because of internet trolls, who are simply not capable of treating her like a human being. Stephen understood this better than most, and that's why he has the gig...
Their energy comes from very different places and they don't know each other well enough to know what to expect from each other (and thus know when to hang around a topic or move on), but when she starts going off with the music at the end you can see her warm up immensely in just a few seconds. It really is her element!
I hope she comes back so she can show a little more with a bit more assuredness from both parties, and maybe show off some music with the band!
That is so true. I still feel sorry for her that she hasn’t been able to overcome her self hate of the one side of her face she continues to avoid showing to the camera. I just don’t understand it because I see a very attractive woman on both sides of her face but insecurities really do a number on us.
From reading a lot of the comments here, I wish folks really knew what the word diva means. It’s not a compliment at all.

Mariah invited me to her mansion once. I spent three days partying like mad, she was an incredibly generous and entertaining host as she was out doing shows while a bunch of us celebrated in her home while awaiting her return. Too bad all that was just a fantastic dream I had back in the 90s one night. I still feel like she is a old friend every time I see her. Even if i do not know her at all.

I have seen many Mariah interviews & you can tell she felt good about herself here and that she was completely comfortable and wanted to give Stephen a little bit of herself since they had never met in person. So she showed up, answered questions incredibly well and had fun. The way she answered the last 5 and jammed with the band was chef’s kiss! ❤️
