“I don’t view fruit as a peanut butter delivery system”, the perfect answer.
True. I grew up in Washington State. Few people may know, we grow apples. So many, in fact, that we can't eat them all and have to import apples from British Columbia and New Zealand! But I've never, ever, put peanut butter on an apple slice. That's for lime or lemon juice.
No, you put peanut butter on a stick of celery and feed it to your dog for a few minutes of silly entertainment.
The finger is a much more efficient delivery system, second only to spoons.
OMG I know it he's so quick witted! I LOVE Tom hanks!
Well, I do...and I'm not apologizing!
everything is a peanut butter deliver system!
"We need to have mysteries in our lives, otherwise we would grow up thinking everything has simple answers". So true.
Ooops! Nice story but no cigar Tom...

Was not ready to think about that.
I know, right? Yikes, lol.
Well, I'm not an Olympic figure skater....
OMG! Tom Hanks acting out the lyrics to 'Our Lips are Sealed' was amazing. You now have to get famous actors to read out their favorite songs in their own style.
That was awesome!!!
and groove to The Go-Go's
Yes! I thought, he's just throwing that out there because it sounds so implausible, but then he knew the lyrics! I was a young adult when it came out, and for years I thought they were saying "Honest Lucille"!~ Tom Hanks is the best.

Tom Hanks always seems like he's a genuine friend when talking to like-minded people.
You feel like you can keep a conversation going with him for hours on end. That's a rare trait in people.
So Hanks is a Go Go's fan, and he knows the words! Magic!
I love Colbert. There’s such a huge feel good quality to him because he’s smart, funny and honest. I just love this darn show so much! Thanks for making it.
Omg, I was legit thinking the same thing. I love him so much! He has definitely gotten better with age.

I agree with you.
Well Colbert's show will be over now that he doesn't have Trump to bash. He isn't that funny or smart or talented. He should be more like Fallon who is an entertainer instead of a political hack.
Now this was a chat that was real, interesting, funny and much less cliche and smug.
ua-cam.com/video/a0JxTZnbUAs/v-deo.html 1
it was until they got to the actual segment, which was very much smug, cliche, uninteresting and unfunny. but I blame the writers.
I would disagree on the "real" claim, since Tom is obviously reading pre-written answers from a sheet of paper he keeps looking at.

The way Tom Hanks answered questions with singing his favorite song to reenacting an actual story; felt so genuine to me.
I, too, grew up watching Dick Cavett. It seems impossible that a man who was such an icon of interviews 50 years ago is still with us and just as calm, concise and clear now as he was back in the day. There's hardly anybody who was anybody in the 20th century he didn't interview. The man has no edges, he's completely round. It's so that his guests can shine without his coloring them. The best. Simply the best.
He was the best ever and I have watched them all
I envy his grandchildren. What a storyteller for a grandpa.
What a beautiful, whole human. Rightfully cherished, loved and admired.
"Tell me how your adult-self would be disappointing to you as a child."

It doesn’t get any better than Tom Hanks. A true living legend. I saw the burbs as a kid and this man has outdone himself ever since.

Until you meet Ringo .
I’ve got a buddy who met him-and apparently, it’s true
I dunno, just think he’d bore me to death but that’s ungrateful.
Henry Winkler would beg to differ
Well, a recent clip of him walking to a vehicle with his wife and a photographer/autograph seeker/paparazzi person clipped the heel of his wife, causing her to stumble and almost fall down. Instant rage oozed out of Tom Hanks and he immediately confronted the guy and had some pretty salty language to follow for the guy as well. In saying that, I don’t blame Tom one but for his reaction. The guy had it coming …
What an awesome interview with the most awesome interviewer and interviee in the world!

Our lips are sealed; that’s exactly what Lee Marvin was saying to Dick Cavett was HIS favorite song!! So weird....

Not true. It’s what Lee was going to tell Dick Cavett if Dick asked if he were involved in any mission during or after the war. It’s a trick question as he and Dick Cavett, may or may not have been involved in secret missions. That’s how I remember the omission of that question.

"The ones who love us will miss us."
If you know, you know.
For those who don't know, Keanu Reeves said this during an interview with Stephen Colbert after being asked "what happen after we die?"
Yeap, it's obviously the best answer there is and the only true one really - it takes someone who misses people to learn it. Little stints like these are what have propelled Keanu to be the internet's something. A breathtaking something of course.
Existential crisis hit me quite early in life, at around 17. I'm only 21 now, and I've been thinking about this question on and off, and haven't been able to come up with a better answer. It all boils down to this, really... If we can be said to live on after our death, it is in people's memories. As a yardstick for measuring your life, the number of people who think of you as a friend is at least as good as money or fame or knowledge. Just a good friend, nothing more. So all I want out of life is that when I die, everyone who had a chance to talk to me for some time to think, "Oh, he was a nice guy. I'll miss him."
Nothing more.
P.S. Thanks to the people who replied to the original text. You're breathtaking! ;)

Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo) never saw combat nor did Lee Marvin serve with him - this is an URBAN LEGEND.
Wow! I'm watching this one long after the show is back in the studio and the difference is astounding. These shows from the closet were special and were the perfect response to a horrible situation. 💚💚💚💚💚💚
Wow...Talk about having a feeling of gratitude! Both Colbert and Hanks wish they had met Bob Keeshan...and I DID! I was in my mid-twenties, working as a valet, parking cars, at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, FL. Keeshan was standing in front of the hotel and, although (as employees) we were forbidden to speak to celebrities, I felt that it was worth risking my job.
I approached him, and asked for his autograph, which he was kind enough to give me (He wrote "Capt. Kangaroo" instead of his real name). Btw, he looked exactly (and I mean EXACTLY) the same way as he did when I watched him on television twenty years earlier. He hadn't aged at ALL.
As he scribbled his moniker onto the back of a "parking receipt" card, I said, "I just want to tell you that you're a very special man." He thanked me, and, then, I thanked him. And this is embarrassing, but it was such an emotional moment, for me (imagine meeting your childhood hero), that I went into a bathroom...and I cried (LOL).
Incidentally, I had no idea that he was a beach master during the invasion of Normandy. That's almost impossible for me to envision, given his role on a children's' TV program.
