I'm a student of linguistics and I loved Arrival. Probably my favorite scene is early on, where Louise is in a helicopter with some of the army guys, one of them says something, she doesn't hear it, he gestures to his headphones, and she understands and puts hers on. I think it's a really subtle way of foreshadowing the theme of communication outside of what we think language is-- no one ever learned to gesture like that, but it still got the message across.
As a father to a deceased daughter, Arrival was a great movie that get's most everything right and discusses a difficult topic in a mature and interesting fashion that we, as a culture, don't talk about very much. I think the only thing that puzzled me at all in the movie was the question of "Would you have a child if you knew it was going to die early?" The answer was so easy for me, given my personal experiences, it seemed like the wrong question altogether. But my experience isn't most people's, so if Arrival helps others come to the 'profound' understanding that love isn't about quantity or duration and that you have to accept 'unfair' results with grace, then great.
I really hope Arrival can help propel the movie industry into making more science-fiction movies that deal with complicated themes. Arrival was the first science fiction movie in a while that reflected a lot of the complex themes you see in good science fiction books without dumbing them down to a caricature or a set of random hand waves at deeper philosophical debates.
Garrett Martin Sorry to hear that bro. hope your ok and your family too. this film is so uplifting abnd gave me some hope too. Take it easy.
I know this is super late, but I really like your comment.
I haven't lost a child, but I've lost a few people very close to me to cancer and your answer really resonated with how I felt watching this movie. Every time I see an article or a UA-cam comment claiming she was selfish for deciding to have her child, I simply can't get into that headspace. There's no one I've lost that I wouldn't go through ten times the amount of pain if it meant having our exact history not be erased. And I imagine it only goes orders of magnitude more for your own child.
Every time I get done watching this film I turn to my wife and tell her I love her and everything she is. To me, the film wasn't about whether or not you would go through the pain to have the person you love. It wasn't even about the idea of time being unchangeable or her free will being curtailed like some have claimed. It's about appreciating everything good while we have it. Because even if we could know the future, our experience would eventually mold us to make the same decisions and go through the same things anyway. To me, this is more a deep musing on the changeable nature of human thought, emotion, and decision-making and using that as a lens to see the deeper truth of how special, unique, and priceless each and every moment of love we have is.
We never know how long we have, and the next moment isn't promised. So be the person every day that will make people be glad you were there even through the pain of losing you. And tell people you love them.
@@ruskokollektiv5457 Yeah I don't get the selfish accusation on Louise (Adam's character). Like, she gave life to a human being. The greatest gift there is. Her daughter, Hannah, wouldn't be able to have that gift for long, but at least she had it and got to have a life. If she made a different choice, Hannah doesn't get this incredible gift. She gave life, one of, if not the greatest gift you can give another human being.
This is a beautiful sentiment. I have not been in this position and hope beyond hope I never feel this loss. I can cry at just the thought of it. I send you as much strength as you ever need.
@@ruskokollektiv5457 - yes, when I hear people say she was selfish, it makes me think of the lesson of another film - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which is that just because somethings (most things) ends in pain, does not mean you should choose to erase them if you have the choice.
this movie was so good it practically ruins other movies for me. like, it single-handedly turned me in to a snob
Kat Reynolds It hits me like a truck every single time. The only two movies that consistently make me cry are Milo & Otis and Arrival lol
This
Exactly. And I love knowing the difference
I think one of the biggest things I can pin down as to why this is my favorite movie by miles, is loss. Many other movies and stories have strong resolution, giving us a "Happily ever after" sort of feeling, even with the bittersweet endings. But just as loss pervades every moment of the movie, so to will it afterwards. It isn't okay. But it's okay that it will never be okay. Louise will be dealing with this emotional conflict for the rest of her life, but she is at peace with it.
This is so resonant for real life. We never completely resolve conflict in our life time, and death is hardly a resolution. But we have to make peace with our constant conflict to be happy, make peace with the likelihood of never having a true resolution. You don't get that from most movies.
Lol “it arrives precisely when it intends to. Like a WIZARD.” My God. I just fell in love.
This was my favorite story of the year and I could not wait to hear your words on it, Mikey. Thank you so much.
My relationship with Renner went like this: "That was a good episode of Angel." 28 Weeks Later → "Hey, it's that guy from that good episode of Angel." → Hurt Locker "Hey, it's that guy from Angel again." So props for that cut.
I was at a Job Corps when this film came out and I got a copy and watched it late at night. Had me in tears in the first 5 minutes. At the end of the film I was quietly sobbing in my bed, I went to the night shift supervisor (who I was cool with) with tears streaming down my face. He saw me and asked me what was wrong "It's kinda dumb but I finished this movie Arrival..." he stopped me and said "Oh man, my wife and I watched that the other night, can I do anything?" I asked if I could go out and smoke, he said sure and went out with me and we talked about the film.
Will forever be one of my favorite films
I loved this movie. I watched it with friends the first time and had an hour long conversation afterwards. Movies that make you do that after seeing them are rare. Great job and video!
I cannot stress how beautiful this video is. It is honestly the most artful and creative thing I’ve seen on this platform. I’m sure someone would like to see this episode in structured order, but I’m not that someone. Cant wait for the next vid.
dooooooood you threw off my groove!!
A vote for Emperor's New Groove!
Mikey, believe me whe I say that since I've started watching your show,my quality of life and how I live it has improved.
The emperors new grove! (good to hearing you better :3)
This film is staggeringly beautiful. I lost my partner, not same as a child, but this is one of the best films handling grief I've ever seen. It's much more realistic than most I've seen despite being a sci fi high concept masterpiece.
One of my big things after Dave died was that I would do it again, because the pain was worth the joy of knowing him. And I wouldn't be who I am now without his love and losing him. It informs every aspect of my life. I owe Dave everything and he brought me so much joy. Learning that mattered so much to me after he died. It didn't diminish the pain at all but it was really important to my ability to cope with it, knowing the love was worth the pain and the pain had value even if it didn't have any meaning. And now, 8 years last his death, sometimes I feel like I'm right back there in the early days after he died, or even before he died. Sometimes I go days then it hits me again.. I have a a very different relationship with time. It most definitely didn't feel linear anymore.
It tore my life apart but I would do it all over again. I love you Dave 🖤🖤🖤
I legitimately just finished this movie and I was sobbing uncontrollably (like, unable to breathe sobbing) throughout the ending. The story is so beautiful and so brilliant and shows both the terrible and wonderful sides of humanity. As I slowly realized what exactly was happening at the end, I broke. This film is amazing.
Coming back to watch this after the tournament in Dec 2021. Still hits me in the feels.
Mikey, that was incredible, thank you so much! Let's get Emperor's New Groove next!
Pull the lever, Mikey.
Wrong leveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
(That's a vote for New Groove, btw. I'm just trying to be clever. Carry on.)
Why do we even have that lever?
I appreciate the emotion+enthusiasm that goes into these vids. I vote Emperor's New Groove bc nobody talks about that movie anymore
I'm so glad that you seemed to enjoy Arrival as much as I did. I saw it prior to its public release (at a film festival) and spent months raving about it, only for it to receive lackluster reviews from my cinema-going peers. I could never put into words precisely what was so astounding about both Arrival and Amy Adams performance (not to mention...which you didn't...seriously? the outSTANDING musical stylings (and song choice in the trailer!))
Evidently, I just needed to find your video so I could shove it in their incorrect faces. :)
So thanks for that.
fantastic Mikey, just fantastic. You put into words how I felt about this film and one of the biggest injustices in Hollywood is how Amy Adams doesn't have a best actor Oscar yet (I'm not at all ignoring the race problems in Hollywood, but come on! she so richly deserves a going!). oh and Emperor's New Groove!
Stop making me cry at how wonderful your content is.
holy cow that was quick ! I feel like it was only yesterday that I watched the moon MwM !!
oh wait, I did watch it yesterday...again..for the 4th time...
I really love your videos and I sincerly hope you're getting better quickly.
love you despite not knowing you
ah and guardians of the galaxy !!!
needs me some james gunn love
Dude, how is it that your videos always make me want to give you a hug? I suspect it's to say thank you for the emotion you cause to well up inside me, as well as offering you a moment of comfort for the emotion you probably experienced in making the video. Until whenever, if ever, I can do more, allow me to say thank you.
Keep being incredibly awesome.
I LOVE your videos. Only reason I watched Arrival was because it was on your top list of 2016. And so glad I did...onto the vote, Emperor's New Groove!
Hi :)
I was at your PAX South panel this year. I kind of stumbled in there during downtime. I was the one that had the question about how most movies seem crappy now. You then brought up a bunch of movies that don't suck and I am happy to say I have since watched most of them. Including Arrival (which was spectacular) Also I have watched almost all of your UA-cam videos. I am so happy I stumbled into that theater. You make some killer videos! Keep it up!
Emperor's New Groove for sure
That was incredible. Well done.
So the next three choices are Disney classic, Disney experimental, and Disney modern? I long ago gave my vote in perpetuity to Mikey (since I believe he can and will have something insightful to say no matter what the topic at hand might be) but this promises to be an interesting vote, to say the least.
Can we just agree that he should do all three? In fact, can Mikey just do all the movies forever? I realize I am a 34 year old man who is currently fangirling but Movies with Mikey is appointment viewing for me, in the truest sense of that word and Doodles of mr Newman currently take up a large portion of the margins of my trapper keeper with a horse on it.
Where would one go to find said doodles of Mikey?
In the margins of my trapper-keeper with a horse on it, right underneath my framed picture of Mikey winning a pulitzer for that line
And you have to draw them yourself, or it doesn't count! Duh!
Seeing the notifications when a new video of yours pops up makes me so very glad. I just watched Arrival again last night in anticipation of your take on it, and you (of course) nailed it. Emotions are hard. That grouping of voting is surprisingly difficult, but I'm going to be a plebeian and say Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy.
Also, I really appreciate your emotional perspective and love of film construction.
Great analysis, Mikey. Love how you give shoutouts to key behind-the-scenes people (like the editor) and give a bit of their background. It's the stuff people normally wouldn't look up but interesting to know.
"jeSUS CHRIST IT'S LIKE YOU'RE A HAND PERSON!"
Well now. That's a new feature.
I had to stop the presentation at 8:10 because I was crying too hard to continue. A few deep breaths and thoughtful exhalations, and I'll start again. I promise.
Oh, I sobbed off and on during the rest of the video, but I kept listening/watching until the end.
Thank you.
Pretty sure I read somewhere that crying is great for you, and adds years to your life. So I'm going to live FOREVER so long as you do, and keep making stuff like this.
Thank you.
Now I have to go back and watch this movie again. And every other movie I watch a dooblidoo from you about.
Got to go with Emperors New Groove.
After seeing this video, I immediately subscribed and checked out your other "Movies with Mikey" videos, and oh my god! I love it. I love the way you use soundbites, sound effects, the music, the editing style , everything about these videos just makes me wanna watch more movies and celebrate movies. I am so glad that i stumbled upon this channel. You've struck gold, keep making more videos man, i can't wait to see what you do next. Hope it's Guardians. but hey, It could be about The Last Airbender and i would watch it. If you have not already i would love to see a editing tutorial, on how you do the effects, and all that. I find it very inspiring. Thank you and keep it up!
Emperor's NEW GROOVE baby!
I was totally gunning for Guardians, but because you legitimately made my job drop with the second option, Emperor's New Groove it is!
Also, mad props for the quick turn around with both Moon and Arrival in less than two weeks time! Hope you have a speedy recovery!
Gotta do The Emperor's New Groove.
Dude, you're incredible! First video I've seen but this is the most well done/fun/beautiful movie review/understanding I've ever seen
Sounding better! Hope you get to full strength soon :D
I put off watching this until today because.... Arrival didn't open in Japan until today. At the end of the film, I immediately remembered Lester Burnham similarly saying, "I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life." It is a horrifying realisation that we actually can time travel today via UA-cam, but that the volume of human experience we see being left behind is highly selective, overwhelmingly self-flattering, and mostly Pewdiepie. Please continue, Mikey, for as long as you can and want.
EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE, THE ONE THE ONLY; THE POISON
Oh right, the poison, the poison for kuzco, the poison chosen especially to kill kuzco, kuzco's poison. ...that poison?
YES THAT POISON!
i love u man!!!!! i cant eave begin to describe the array of emotions i feel while watching your videos. especially with the recent set of events u've been throw. fills me with hope happiness nostalgia and appropriation of thought provoking pleasure.
i dont know how i culled thank u enough, so keap up the good work and doing what u love!
I vote The Emperor's New Groove. What ever you come up with should be interesting.
I love this movie so much. The entire sequence up to Louise meeting the aliens for the first time felt so visceral. It hit me particularly hard as an introvert, since I feel like that a lot when I know I have a particular kind of social interaction coming up soon, and no movie has ever hit that for me in quite the same way before. I absolutely need to watch this movie again to try to catch things that I didn't the first time through.
Emperor's New Groove
Emperors New Groove sounds like a blast! Love your channel! Also glad to see that you are starting to feel better, I was scared for a while.
I'm going emperor's new groove only because I recently realized that kuzco's groove could be equated to ADHD's hyperfocus state because I was in the middle of making a painting, got interrupted, and got pissed as shit. The only thing I could do to explain why I was so mad was to just say "YOU THREW OFF MY GROOVE" only later remembering that was an existing phrase and that there are times when one really should "beware the groove."
So basically, this movie's been on my mind this week and I'd love to see your take.
Great to have you back sir! Great video as usual, hit it out the parkkkkkkkk! New Groove brew
The Emperor's New Groove!
Great video. You've managed to put into words what I was feeling about this movie (especially the grief and loss) but couldn't express.
Now for the vote, firstly you're a monster, and I vote Emperor's New Groove.
The real question, are these Aliens the Elcor's Ancestors?
With excitement: Probably.
I cried at the end of Arrival. I was emotionally stunned by the whole thing and overwhelmed.
Dat turn around time though... damn boi, u quick on the trigger with this one. This is one of my fav movies from the last bunch of years, and this just solidified a bunch of reasons why in my puny human brain that I was having trouble fully describing, so thanks for that!
Oh, and Emperor's New Groove for sure.
Incredible breakdown Mikey! The thought that we experience the film in the same way that Louise has those experiences occurred to me as I was watching it as well, so it was nice to see you take the thought a step further and analyze how that effects her and us as an audience!
I'm also gonna vote Emperor's New Groove 'cause it's the only one of the three I haven't seen so it'll give me an excuse to get round to watching it!
Emperor's New Groove!
You sounded so good in this video Mikey! Keep getting better and take care of yourself!
Emperor's New Groove - definitely want to see what you think of the other two movies at some point but I suspect that you'll be able to really surprise me with the Emperor's New Groove review :P
Ooooooh... Emperor's New Groove.
I really love your take on this. And it explains why I cried at the end of it. You're right, we carry the grief of Hannah's death through the whole movie and knowingly, she still chooses to have that child, this was emotionally powerful. Thanks for another home run.
The Emperor's New Groove
Glad to hear you sounding better, another great video, please make an emperor's new groove.
GET BETTER MIKEY!!!
Great episode, Mikey. This one made me tear up.
Emperor's New Groove!!!!
there's too many people on UA-cam who analyze films and constantly say the same predictable things in their videos. you are not one of them. every time I think I've read and watched everything there is to know about a film, you always add to the conversation in your own original and thoughtful way
New Groove!
Your best MwM yet, hands down. And super happy to hear the leap in how you sound since Moon. Keep on keeping on!
Emperor's New Groove. No contest.
Gotta go with New Groove.
Mikey you sound healthier! I hope you're recovering well, this episode was amazing (as always :P)
emperor's New groove!
Glad to hear that your getting more confident in vocal inflections my dude! Definatley go for New Groove!
You deserve so many more subscribers. Do that New Groove though! =D
I know this is UA-cam and it's how things always are, but I don't understand how anyone could dislike this video. That "Everlong" swell alone had me beaming.
Oh, and The Emperor's New Groove. REALLY curious where that will go.
New Groove please!
Mikey, love your videos. You are one of the best. Great stuff. Keep making them.
Emperor's. New. Groove.
emperor's new groove for sure!
loved this mwm!! and i hope you're getting better
You're so cruel to us Mikey but it has to be New Groove aka best animated kids movie yea I said it
El Dorado would like to have a word with you
@@MnopTheGreat El Dorado is one of the most underrated gems of animation
Awesome deep dive as always.
Guardians next, please. Seeing as how Vol 2 is just coming out, and you mentioned being timely and all...
Great video as always Mike! Now I need to actually see Arrival... and then watch the video again. My vote is for Emperor's new groove!
I had to travel all the way to the US to watch this video. 12 looong hours by plane!
Worth it!
This is good. This is so good. Everything you make is so good. [Binge-Watching Intensifies]
totally Emperor's New Groove.
Great video. I'll be watching this one more than once for sure
keep on keeping on man
Emperor's New Grove because what
Anybody else, when watching this video, check the the scrub bar when the outro started? Guess watching other videos of Mikey's has me trained.
new groove please :D
Also love the music behind the summary. Was it a nod to "Always" which walks a similar path about accepting the choices you make, and love?
This made me excited to give the movie a try! I don't have a vote, I'm just excited to see what you say about any of those movies. I'm not someone who knows a lot about movies so I basically come here because I enjoy watching someone geek out about something they love so much, thanks for continuing to make them, Mikey.
I watched _Arrival_ for the first time yesterday just so I'd be prepared when this video came out. It was totally worth it!
Also, _Guardians of the Galaxy,_ please!
Absolutely love and adore this film, and I loved the video! Only thing I'd 'change' about it is I wish you'd have worked in the wonderful "On the Nature of Daylight" track from the beginning and end of the film. I think that music tied with the massive emotional peaks present in those moments was a big part of my response of openly weeping in the theater by the end. Otherwise lovely work as always, Mikey! I vote Emperor's New Groove, by the way.
Hope you are doing well Mikey. This was a great video!
well I'll be perfectly happy if any of those are the next episode. great choice dude.
yes, Amy Adams deserves an Oscar more than anything.
I love Arrival so much, I never get tired of people talking about it! Thanks for this great video.
Also speaking of Guardians, do you think you might ever make a video about Guardian vol. 2?
Emperors new grove for sure! also, you're sounding better each video! Keep up the good work
Glad to see you're feeling good again man! Loved the video
I like the way you perceive reality Mikey! Well done brother.
Great turnaround on this episode, Mikey! Your work continues to inspire me. As for voting, you definitely made it hard to choose but I have to vote for Guardians of the Galaxy. I enjoy it too much to not see you analyze it and enlighten me on it(hopefully it will win..this time).
Awesome episode as usual Mikey! So so happy to see you back making things you obviously love to make!
Also: Emperor's New Groove.
