Actually I got the feeling that he smiled at Hackers as its cheezy fun and Wargames because he is about the right age that the movie might have been a influence on him as a kid. Just guessing that it might have been fond memories of the shows. That said.. what no Antitrust?
"Hackers" is still my favourite movie. I never liked the visuals (I was a script kiddie) when I was younger, but found out years later when it was finally released on DVD, that the visuals were meant to show how a hacker can easily visualise everything. In particular, the final hack scene with the building style representing file servers, is basically they can just walk through like a library and find/take what they want easily. I think it was a nice touch on the BS required for hollywood, but true to the nature.
also their Chatrooms and Clients were an adapt to what later would be ICQ/MSN as p2p DM service. they just stipulated that everything was in an overall dark net IRC and ppl could just DM you through your handle. its a big problem when people with too much technical expertise try to explain something bc they lack Imagination
You mean like when Tim and Abby are both at the same keyboard at the same time? That might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen on a screen in my life.
The only thing I'd split hairs over was the Tron:Legacy bit, but that's more or less an argument over whether exploiting a physical system counts as social engineering. It's definitely part of hacking, otherwise DEF CON wouldn't do lockpicking contests. I'd put that on the editor though, seeing as including something like that would be like me trying to explain why network engineers will argue over what layers are actually responsible for the issues they resolve on the job.
Yeah, a large part of pen testing is physical access, it's a perfectly normal attack vector; so while not in front of a computer, it's definitely "hacking" in the more general type. There's a good # of pen testing ted talks on YT where they talk about physical access they've gained in the past via social hacking, lock picking, etc., which some may not consider 'hacking' at first glance. Very interesting stuff.

this series is really cool but for the love of god sTOP INTERRUPTING THE PERSON BEING INTERVIEWED WITH THOSE STUPID CLIPS EVERY FIVE SECONDS THEY ADD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING 90% OF THE TIME
I agree, but if you pay attention to what is being said in the movie clips, it's really funny most of the time. It's almost like the characters are having a conversation with this guy. But yeah, it is super annoying.
Omg I know literally nothing about coding except HTML and this confused me so much. Like this is the only thing I could read. What else was completely false?
Yeah, Wired shoulda put his name in the video title. I almost didn't watch, since I knew as a computer security professional, I wouldn't be learning anything, but if I'd known it was ma boy Samy, I would've been all over it. That being said, TV & movie hacking is usually so bad it inspires me to laugh wildly and/or groan horribly, but Samy is such an even-keeled and diplomatic guy that we kinda got robbed of an opportunity for vicarious unrealism pains here.
11:08 "a fictitious tool" correction: the movie actually used a very real SSH vulnerability (CVE-2001-0144) and sshnuke is just a name they chose for their exploit implementation
I really enjoy these Technique Critique videos, the professionals are incredibly impressing, but I agree that WIRED should probably chill with editing. I understand they're aiming for it to be more entertaining, but it's ultimately disruptive. Keep the playbacks relevant, please.
@D not really... I don't consider a "formatting" style to be code but that depends on your definition of code. And seeing "code in terminal" doesn't even make sense... does he mean the output that the code produces?
i learned barely any html and decided to trick my friends and convince them i am “hacking” so i tricked them, they reported me to the principal and the principal explained that it was html code and it cannot hack anything
1:36 It's realistic to hack traffic lights, it's not realistic to turn conflicting directions green. There is a hardware fail-safe called the Malfunction Management Unit that prevents it.
yeah. it would be more realistic if they simply deactivated all of them instead of turning all directions green. Also, for their intents, it would have been more than enough to just hack the directions they needed for their plan :>
@@sethadkins546 To change the firmware of the MMU, they would have to physically access it. MMUs are generally in an alarm-rigged control box, often underground. It may be easier to add a remotely activated relay to swap red and green wires in the traffic lights themselves, not many people will question you if you open them with a hi-vis vest on but the MMU will probably detect that tampering and report it. Hackers is one of my all-time favorite movies. However, when combined with the fact that I wasn't feeling well at the time, the simultaneous and overlapping of accuracy and inaccuracy once gave me a nosebleed. Seriously. The accurate hacking is represented by some of the wildest and most potentially misleading visuals I have ever seen. Spending a couple hours rummaging through databases for a file is shown by flying through a virtual city. Sure, the cool factor is off the charts, and it well represents the thrill, but it just perpetuates the "computers are magic" attitude Hollywood is only now just kinda sorta getting over. And that goes for most of the scenes of actual hacking.
16:42 But the hacker disguised the exe as a PDF, so the OS made the victim think it was a PDF. The file is part innocent cover, part payload. Is that so unrealistic?
@DotA TV Which, if it was Adobe Reader... There are a number of bugs in previous years that would allow code execution when opening a PDF in Adobe. That's part of the reason Firefox, Chrome and even Edge have their own (limited) PDF viewers now.
PDFs Can contain some javascript. In past years there have been multiple vulnerabilities that allowed a malicious script to drop a file on the system and then execute it
Pretty sure there's a special character that can flip the characters after it, making anything possible really (eg. a file called 'annfdp.exe' can become 'annexe.pdf')

HACKERMAN
"Hackers" is still my favourite movie. I never liked the visuals (I was a script kiddie) when I was younger, but found out years later when it was finally released on DVD, that the visuals were meant to show how a hacker can easily visualise everything. In particular, the final hack scene with the building style representing file servers, is basically they can just walk through like a library and find/take what they want easily. I think it was a nice touch on the BS required for hollywood, but true to the nature.

also their Chatrooms and Clients were an adapt to what later would be ICQ/MSN as p2p DM service.

This guy is extremely knowledgeable and Wired should really stop with the 'funny' little edits during his explanations

I mean maybe they could rewrite the firmware and it would turn off the MMU?
@@sethadkins546 To change the firmware of the MMU, they would have to physically access it. MMUs are generally in an alarm-rigged control box, often underground. It may be easier to add a remotely activated relay to swap red and green wires in the traffic lights themselves, not many people will question you if you open them with a hi-vis vest on but the MMU will probably detect that tampering and report it. Not really a hack though.
