THE BEST of VAN LIFE - GERMANY JUST KEEPS on GIVING! BEAUTIFUL BAVARIA

  • This week, our campervan travels take us to southern Bavaria in Germany as we discover and explore the German alps, including a pretty but pricey gorge walk, and then take a hike and a swim in Lake Eibsee at the foot of Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze. With waters that look like a Caribbean paradise, this lake shocked and amazed us with its crystal clear beauty and getting the chance to swim with snow-capped mountains behind us. We've spoken about the difficulties living in a van, but things like this are definitely the high points of vanlife and sum up why, for all the sacrifices, we made this choice. Even if it did cost us a fortune to park to see the lake, but nothing's perfect, is it? And yes, it was worth it!

Sometimes you just can’t put a price on stuff - even the car park charges I would pay to experience all that! 18€ for 4 hours parking is a difficult one, however that looks like a lifetime memory moment and you'll have forgotten all about the 18€ long before the memory of the experience fades.
    That gorge was a bit of us, but again was the memory worth the cost? It's hard when you know there are similar places in the world for a lot less but we have to say both did look that little bit extra special.
    As for Steve swimming, Mr Baywatch looked like a professional gliding through the water. Is there an ex Olympian there?
    Now we do have to talk about getting in and out of the water. I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that hasn't perfected looking cool while doing it, preferring to go with the walking on hot coals image instead.
    Much love Darren and Alison 🤟♥️

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  5 місяців тому

      Hey guys, that's so nice of you to mention Steve's swimming technique because that's one sporty activity he does enjoy! He is very good indeed when he gets going and looks very streamlined 😁 (I can't do front crawl anymore as my toes, feet and calves immediately cramp up, I've no idea why 🤔)
      Unfortunately, much like a meal out, you never know until it's over if the money was worth it or not, but suffice to say, you're right, that was a lifetime memory moment for sure, so all was eventually worth it.
      The gorge had its spectacular moments, it just needed fine tuning with our timing because it's a narrow walkway and so so busy. And of course we got unlucky with the water colour, but at least that was rectified at the other end.
      Haha I refuse to believe there is a graceful way to leave the water 😂 The stones in Lake Eibsee were really painful and awkward to step on, we nearly toppled over so many times.
      Thanks guys, much love ❤️ 🤟

      Thank you, it was like a dream, and worth every penny in the end! We couldn't stop staring (and it took 2 hours to walk around the lake). I think it was created from glacial melt water, I'm not sure if that still feeds it or not, we didn't see any obvious streams or rivers flowing in.

    I was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen a few weeks ago. Did you see the ski jumping site? I’m not in to sports but standing at ground level looking up those “tracks”, wow. You can actually see part of it in the upper right corner when you are in the pool/lake. It was so hot when I was there, I didn’t know about the lake 🤷‍♀️ well we can’t see everything.

      Hello, ah yes we did, we didn't have time to film it sadly! But fully agree with you - it looks terrifying! 😬 We were impressed with the sort of colosseum look of the audience area down below. Should've featured all that in the video really!
      The swimming pool bit (if you mean where we first swam and were sat chatting on the grass) was right around the corner from that! But despite its size is easy to miss as it's all walled in and didn't seem massively over signposted. Lake Eibsee was a short drive away however. But there's so much to see there you'd need a lot longer than we did! Thanks for watching 🤗 ❤️

    I have always liked swimming on hot days as it is a great way to have a pee. I enjoy your banter, it has a peter cook and dudley moore (derek and clive) feel about it. The scenery is nice but these carparks are crazy expensive. Have you thought about getting solar power?

      😂😂😂 That is a good point, and in some ways less stressful than peeing on a trail somewhere when you're desperate and looking frantically around you hoping a group of people don't come around the corner and see you - meanwhile, you've peed a bit on yourself because you're too busy looking to see if anyone's coming 🤦‍♂️🙈
      We do have a portable solar panel which we use to charge up our battery back, which can then charge laptops etc. It would be easier on the roof though!

      @@comealongdear I recommend Konigsee too. It's even more beautiful than Lake Eibsee. It's like a deep fjord with sapphire blue to emerald green water, apparently the cleanest water of any lake in Germany, and at the very end is Germany's highest waterfall. It is very touristy though, probably even more touristy than Eibsee.

      Thanks for seconding that recommendation, now we know we have to go back to see it! ❤️ Sometimes, like in Prague, touristy is worth it to see something- as usually there's a reason why it's touristy in the first place ❤️

    • @mimamo
      @mimamo 5 місяців тому

      @@comealongdear I completely agree. Places are usually touristy for a good reason. :) However, I felt that with the very high praise I also needed to give you a little warning, because it can be VERY touristy, meaning it'll be packed with people. All the gorgeous pictures you see of Konigsee online seem as if it's a secluded natural paradise, in reality there were probably two dozen people right behind the photographer, waiting for their turn to make that exact same shot. ;)
      That being said, Konigsee is among the most beautiful and stunning places you can visit in the entire Alps. But you need to come in summer or early autumn when the leaves have just turned gold or ruby.

    Lovely seeing you guys enjoy the swim, especially the one with the mountains.
    But (grumpy old man rant) that Bloody Music! I had to crank the volume down, then up again to hear you talk.
    OK, in the wheel cog thingy I did find a volume stabilizer. It helped some, but the music volume still made me grind my teeth.
    Have you tried park4night to find park ups?
    Cheers.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  5 місяців тому +1

      Hi Jon, aahh I'm so sorry 🙈 We do enjoy putting the music in to accompany scenery and I never turn it up beyond its normal point (unlike our voices which I have to turn up so they come through in places). I try not to have too much music while we're talking (or at least very low when we do) so I assume you mean when it transitions from a talking bit to sudden music over scenery, is the bits you find jarring?
      I'd be interested if anyone else has the same issue because I'd hate to stop using music. One thing I find, is once the video's done, the volume levels and sound quality is vastly different depending on what device it's played on. Sometimes for better, sometimes a lot worse. Unfortunately, I'm not very tech-minded so I'd struggle with the real fine tuning of such things.
      I think sometimes it depends on the song choice as well. I could try to turn it down and see if that makes a difference without detracting from the music itself. We get a lot of people who seem to enjoy the music so I feel a bit unsure what to do, but perhaps for the next one I could turn one song down and see how that goes as a starting point.
      Anyway, glad you enjoyed the swim! 😍❤️ We do use Park4Night a lot, it's very handy even if it has its critics.
      Thanks Jon 👍

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  5 місяців тому

      The duck has to pay by putting up with us annoying tourists infiltrating his lake I expect 😉 A change of government here has been much needed and it's very surreal to see (mostly) a normal bunch of people with (mostly, again) decent policies and trying to reverse terrible ones. Not that it's perfect by any means, but I can't remember the last time it didn't feel like a cartoon villain line-up. Anyway, not that that will affect public behaviour much I expect 😂 To be fair, most people are sensible and respectful, like with anything it's just a minority that can ruin it for the rest (like with vanlife), but really the bigger problem is local councils investing in infrastructure I think and erasing what's been lost or not looking after what we have. But hey, what do we know! We all like to pull out our soapbox every now and again, even if we aren't sure of the facts 😂

    📸 With hard standing car park charges literally gouging, often with no liability for loss or damage, I wonder if driving around in a foreign plated vehicle, registered in a different country even matters?
    No ANPR in a car park will have that stored. Let them issue a ticket, in the hope you pay it, for so as long as you don't pay it, they never have an address to escalate the matter.🤔

      Hello, yes we have often wondered the same and heard that speeding tickets often don't get issued to foreign drivers. Not always true however, but sometimes!
