i am a 40 year old man who lost his wife in child birth to our only daughter who thankfully lived. It will be six years in January. the worst part of grief is the numbness you feel so you can go on functioning but you miss having emotions. I cannot express enough the release and poignancy to me personally when the bridge hits. being able to cry occasionally after going through what i’ve gone through is better than sex. better than getting drunk. better than getting angry. in fact i haven’t watched this song and not cried at that part. So puddles and your buddy Mike: thanks for letting me sleep tonight. i needed it

Thank you for coming out to share a tiny piece of your story, I truly hope you can find peace through the rest of your life, I hope your daughter is well and will as well.

It's amazing how a different version of a song with all the different inflections on the lyrics brings out various lines and helps the listener to better understand the meaning of the song. Like reading a book and then hearing someone else read it aloud.

The song is actually about the death of the Way brothers' grandmother Elena and their grief surrounding her loss.
The name was changed to Helena in reference to the character from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, a play that heavily features sleep as a theme. Among other things, the play compares sleep to death and respite from the world.

you did a very important, sad, sweet, song justice. This song and MCR was and continues to be a HUGE impact on my life. Thank you for treating it with the reverence it deserves. You highlighted the grieving and sad soul of the song without making it corny. Made me cry, actually. I think Elena and Gerard would approve. RIP Elena

Both versions are so different that you can't really say, which one is better. And after all it doesn't matter. Good cover is good cover just as good song is a good song. It's different, the feel is different and it's on everybody's taste to decide what they like more. I prefer the original for many reasons, but this cover is definitely the best one I've heard.

Nah Scooby. If the lady liked the cover, direct her to the cover. The original is good too, but it's also completely different in style. Better to warm people up to a song through a cover in a style they like, and use that as a gateway. Then they can go check out the original and perhaps other songs by the original artist.
There's a ludicrously long list of songs that I like only because I fell in love with covers of those songs before I heard the original. If I had heard the original first I wouldn't have cared nearly as much for them or the covers - they would have been spoiled by the first impression.

I've been listening to this song since August 2020 when I first discovered you. It's one of my favorites of all your songs. I watched the videos from the club that night where you sang this and "Where is My Mind". It was a packed house, right up to the stage. What I loved was all the young people there giving you their undivided attention and adoration. They were hanging on to every word you sang and singing along, because, of course, they knew all the words. Your older audiences are more reserved, but these guys weren't hesitant to show you their love and appreciation throughout your performance. I was so pleased you got to experience that.

    Verse 1]
    Long ago
Just like the hearse you die to get in again
We are so far from you
    Burning on
Just like the match you strike to incinerate
The lives of everyone you know
And what's the worst you take
    From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight
    [Chorus]
What's the worst that I can say?
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long not goodnight
    [Verse 2]
    Came a time
    When every star fall
    Brought you to tears again
We are the very hurt you sold
And what's the worst you take
    From every heart you break
And like the blade you stain
Well I've been holding on tonight
    [Chorus]
What's the worst that I can say?
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long not goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long not goodnight
    [Bridge]
    Can you hear me?
    Are you near me?
Can we pretend to leave and then
    We'll meet again
    When both our cars collide
    [Chorus]
What's the worst that I can say?
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long not goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long and goodnight

And you created a most wonderful thing - you are a true artist, one I was longing for these days. I hope you have the time to read this poem you inspired me to write. It's from the heart:
"I fell in love with the sad clown with the golden voice
You play your part so well
With humor and sadness blending like colors in harmony on the canvas
You started the world’s first joke that made everyone cry
You’re a rock ‘n’ roll diva, a snowman in disguise
The Grinch who stole the spotlight
An operatic soul with humanity as your best card
The joy you bring into our lives isn’t the kind that’s for sale
While the real clowns are running your country
You show up at the pity party
    With your greatest gift
    And the usual makeup
Do be sad and show the world
The beauty that resides in vulnerability
    And let another tear fall
    And another one…
I fell in love with the sad clown with the golden voice
What do I do other than go with it, where it takes me?
There is laughter and glee and the white color is growing on me
You fill in the blanks with your art’s tint
    Ageless and full of nostalgia
In each tremolo of your voice
    There’s a happy ending
    The one I never had
A musical hug is on the menu these nights
As your art attends to my mournful soul
    Bit by bit
I cherish this like children savoring chocolate with both of their little hands
Who wait for summer days when they can play for longer hours
There is whole in your baritone voice
Which hits the right notes to grasp the pain
    And make it worthwhile
All we can do now is
    Sing and smile
And join your circus of hopeful acts."

Lyric writers must love Puddles. Even though his vocals are beyond amazing he never neglects the lyrics. His phrasing, emoting and facial expressions give depth, clarity and meaning to what ever he sings. Puddles some times makes a song sound much better than it is standing on it's own. Just another aspect of his talent. I loved this cover and I would have never have heard this song if it were not for Puddles.

Pickles those of us who follow your channel are there for you. And you can be thankful that you have the kind of brother that you actually miss when he is gone, instead of the kind that makes you glad when they leave.

    Lyrics
    Long ago
Just like the hearse, you die to get in again
We are so far from you
Burning on just like a match you'll strike to incinerate
The lives of everyone you know
And what's the worse you take (worst you take)
From every heart you break (heart you break)
And like the blade you stain (blade you stain)
Well, I've been holding on tonight
What's the worst thing I can say
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long and goodnight
    Came a time
When every star fall brought you to tears again
We are the very hurt you sold
And what's the worst you take (worst you take)
From every heart you break (heart you break)
And like the blade you stain (blade you stain)
Well, I've been holding on tonight
What's the worst thing I can say
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long and goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long and goodnight
    Can you hear me
    Are you near me
    Can we pretend
    To leave and then
    We'll meet again
    When both our cars collide
What's the worst thing that I can say
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long and goodnight
And if you carry on this way
Things are better if I stay
    So long and goodnight
    So long and goodnight

It’s so long and goodnight, song long not goodnight. Also we probably don’t need these because most of us know the original :))

Outstanding; the sheer emotion in this song is gut wrenching. Out of all the versions of this song, I think yours truly shows the pain the songwriters wished to convey they made the song.

To be fair, it’s been historically proven that it’s rarely the winners in these shows who really get far, but the runner ups. Just look at Melanie Martinez. I’m very confident that puddles will continue growing a cult following.

I never got to see Puddles on the show, but I watched the videos of his appearances, and the fact that I saw how talented this man is made me a fan right off the bat...I'm tired of mainstream crap.As Aerin said.MOST of the winners of that show go nowhere,I'm just glad he got to appear to a world wide audience, then those of us that truly appreciate what he's doing can enjoy it without the industry trying to change and ruin everything.

I'm not. What do the winners get? A contract? Chains? Puddles got put on television. Everyone got to see and hear someone so few comparatively already knew about. Hopefully the rest of this year and 2018 will be the beginning of all the good things he so rightfully deserves for all his hard work and talent.

Tammy, I had the "pleasure" of having insomnia the night he performed this at EMO Nite and was lucky to catch it on Facebook live. I had never heard this song before that night. I still haven't heard the original but I love Puddles' version.

Ronda...I was up late that night too & just happened to catch the FB Live video as he walked out onto the stage! It was so great...felt like I was there myself! When he sang this song, I was so mesmerized by it & loved how eerie & haunting it sounded. I asked the other people who were watching what that song was & someone told me. I looked up the original song by MCR here on UA-cam & was quite shocked! LOL. They're definitely not my cup of tea, but I'm glad Puddles covered it. It's nice to have my horizons broadened :)
