thanks for all the amazing comments, everyone. before i started this song, my buddy Lou who was tech-ing for me and built those ROPPOLI amps handed me that beautiful NASH strat (belongs to my other buddy John) and said, "hey phil, stevie ray vaughn died 21 years ago." and i thought about that and got emotional and this is what came out. i don't think i could repeat it in a quazillion years.
Yea sometimes in a jam session magical things happen that we can stay up nights and days trying to play it again but it's hard to recreate something as sick as your jam here I feel ya
+pmoore4321 I've gotta put it an number 1. I like it better than Stevie Ray Vaughan's version. What other 4 have you heard that are competitive with it?
They say a guitar player’s unique tone comes from their hands, but that’s only half true; the other half comes from their heart and soul. I know this because I FELT it in my heart and soul. Phil X: you keep it real and play what you feel because it works man, it just works. Thank you
*@ James Giardinazzo* `````````````````````````````````` There is nothing wrong with quoting another tune in the improv (when chord progression calls for it). The greatest jazzers have done it million times. Listen to "Cannonball" Adderley solos peppered with funny melodies borrowed from, sometimes, not very Bebop-ish tunes or Charlie Parker compositions written over the chord progression literally borrowed from other songs. It takes genius like *Phil X* to throw quotation into his improve and make it sound like his own. So, back off dude... 🐳
I love how Phil is not afraid to play up to and then past his abilities. Thats what was so great about Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. They didn't fear sliding over the edge and thus greatness was achieved. When you aren't afraid it makes you unpredictable and thats exciting.
Little Wing is now a rock standard that only the top players can seriously have a chance of doing it real justice. I have heard several covers of this piece of Jimi magic and this is the best, the feel, the tone and the restraint. Thank you Phil X.
+stevenjgw9 I'm not sure if "rock" is the word to be honest. I think that's one of the problems with it - that people think it's rock song, and it's more of a lullaby with a mentally loud guitar solo. (I know that babies don't like loud guitar solos, but fuckem. Lullabies are not all about the baby ffs) I've never heard it played properly to be honest - I don't think even Jimi got it right. Everyone over-doodles it. Over-rocks it.
It's a guitarists song that's for sure. So many covers done in completely different ways and 90% of them you can't tell which one you would prefer. Kudos to Phil for such a dynamic performance and my respects to Jimi for such a great platform for generations following to get inspired.
thanks eric, the story of this performance is that right before i went into it, my buddy Lou (of Roppoli Amps) said, "hey.... Stevie Ray Vaughn died 20 years ago, today" & i felt all this emotion come over me & what you hear here is the result. the funny thing about playing from the heart is that sometimes it's awesome and sometimes it's not. if i try to recreate this performance, i suck. that's why if you see us play for 2 hours and i don't play Little Wing, it's 'cause i wasn't feeling it.
Just love Phil....He is the guitar player I wish I could have been, and the version of "Little Wing" I wish I could play. I have been playing guitar for a long while but about 1% of Phils talent. I'm going to give it a shot. Hope I have enough time to pick up and steal some of his technique. If I can play about 25% of this version I will be blessed. I want to play this for my kids before "The Big Day". I'm on borrowed time as I have Cancer. Thank you Rocky and your crew for this wonderful Video. You have a gift as well. I wish I saw this many years ago. Tell Phil thank you for the music from me if you ever see him again. (I'm such a big fan)... Don't believe it when people say you can't take things with you when you finally head towards the light. Music is the one gift that will remain in your soul. GOD bless all of you....
Rocky here. Thanks for the "thank you". My camera partner that did all my video work with me (and this video of Little Wing) was Jacquie Macri. It's interesting timing on this particular post (comment), as we just came from the services for "her passing" an hour ago and we are having a nice lunch. She had cancer also like you. She would probably like this post and tell you, "It's a great idea, and you should do it". If she told you in person, you would do it, ha ha, she was inspiring and great. Thanks for the reply and get her done my friend. I'm sorry you're on this cancer journey, she would tell you to treat every day like Christmas.
It's not about hitting every note. When you hear the notes you want, you go for them. Sometimes you miss them. Listen to Michael Brecker, he was a master and it was common for him to crack notes going for them, usually in the altissimo register. Doesn't matter though, everyone listening knew what he was going for.
I've been listening to this song since 1970 - first Jimi's, then Derek and D's version, and Stevie Ray's later. Truly one of the very best (if not the best) version's of this song ever done. Mr. Phil X - hat's off to your sir, I'm not a musician, but I know tasteful playing when I hear it - and this is amazing. Really. Thank you for sharing. You need to do a live album.
What’s so insane is that I listened to this performance and all I could say is that it was the most original, meaningful, soulful performance ever. Def channeled Jimi and SRV. Jimi’s 5/70 performance of LW at Berkeley used to be my fav performance of this iconic song. Until I saw this. Then I saw Phil X’s note saying even he knew it was a special performance.
I don't know how many times I have commented on this, but here's another. Apologies... It's just brilliant. Chops, tone, a great amp and great song. Music is, quite possibly, the greatest thing on the planet...
I saw this guy when he was starting out with Powder at a thing called Holbrookfest. I always thought his talent way exceeded that style of music. Glad to see him playing some heartfelt music. Keep on keepin on Phil!!
I have never heard a better version of this in my life! Better even than Jimi. Better than anything a studio ever put out. Some mighty tasty licks sprinkled in there, Phil! The greatest improvisation I've ever heard. Amazing! Just amazing! Cheers!
If I have to be honest I like this much more than the original Jimi's version. You're one of the most ten inspiring guitarists I ever listened to and I'm working to learn this song exactly as you do in the video, this is the best solo I've ever heard in 17 years
Bryan Grabowski, hey bryan do you play guitar ? Do you compose? Phil x solo was absolutely stellar... there is no need to get offended :) Jimi will always remain
Kudos Phil and thanks for the upload rocky. This is a very unexpected and sweet surprise. I wasn't familiar with Phil's playing but this has convinced me it's worth my time to check his work out. Expertise AND taste - what a concept :P
Phil X is ALL OVER my feed for whatever the algorithm does… and I thank God… he’s so good and such a great family man! He said his playing suffered after he had his kids and they are a priority. Which is just reflective of what a great man he is… his kids will grow up and move on, and he will just be a better man for it… and he will be so glad for being there for them. Meanwhile, no one is seeing any downgrading of his playing AT ALL, if anything it’s even more tasty….
Phil X is one hell of a guitarist or should I say artist this is the shiz nit thats for sure and great filming too I must say cheers and thank you for putting this up for us all to watch and listen too.
@philx1111 glad someone recorded it ;) sitting here since 3 hours just this video me and a bottle of wine, and it couldnt get any better. Thanx 4 doing what u do.
Mate, I saw this clip bout a year ago & it was the first time I heard Little Wing. Since then I've listened to Jimi, Stevie Ray & a few others & grew to love the song (even learned a basic version myself). Anyway, wanted to say I keep coming back to this clip cos it's unique & a real pleasure to listen to. A beautiful song played beautifully. Nice one Phil, you're a champ! All the best from Australia
wow! man... you just inspired ME. there are so many amazing stories behind some of these comments that we don't even realize. thanks for sharing yours.
Hey man. I think it's worth writing a comment. I've looked at this video 1 hundred times and I'm always in the same spirit. Tears close to falling down, damn.. What a play, what a sound ! I've tried several guitars, several amps. If I wasn't sure that fingers do the sound I could have spent a lot of money to reach this sound. Hopefully I know I have a lot of home work to do before investing more :) Again thanks for this pure moment of pleasure !

well i think he scored number one with that solo ^^
And that mean a hell lot considering his elders

that one man who can mix sweet child o mine in little wing
Phil, you are a rock guitar pioneer
My God I'm late to the party, the most incredible performance ever thank u phil
So much feeling. Best version. Unbelievable
This is just incredible playing! Every note has its meaning and place in his improvisation.
apart from the sweet child o mine part hahahah i think he was just having fun there

Phil is a legit living legend for those who know. A master level musician.

I'm sorry but got that SRV part wrong. Just watch SRV Live at El Mocambo and judge for yourself.

EXACTLY the example I was thinking of...
You are completely incorrect about SRV. Have you watched any of his live performances?
True dat!
That guitar solo is just perfect
This is just beautiful.. 7 minutes of pure music, created by a master of the electric guitar..

Amazing playing from all. Phil X at his best, having a solid rhythm section makes all the difference in the world.
