- A nice version of "Little Wing" by Phil X recorded at The WAX in Kitchener. Phil X, Daniel Spree, Paul Hoffman. Audio recording and mixing by Todd Farhood. Video and editing by Rocky Nash Films. Camera Operators: Rocky Nash, Jacquie Macri, Dana McMullen and Leslie McMullen.
thanks for all the amazing comments, everyone. before i started this song, my buddy Lou who was tech-ing for me and built those ROPPOLI amps handed me that beautiful NASH strat (belongs to my other buddy John) and said, "hey phil, stevie ray vaughn died 21 years ago." and i thought about that and got emotional and this is what came out. i don't think i could repeat it in a quazillion years.
Yea sometimes in a jam session magical things happen that we can stay up nights and days trying to play it again but it's hard to recreate something as sick as your jam here I feel ya
Thanks for sharing your gift, man.
Phil X should be up their with the greats .He is truly a brilliant individual.
Kicking Ass brother, pure Awesomeness!
That is such an epic performance! It just fucking oozes emotion.. 🎸 🎤 👑
Phil's passion and energy for playing is just unbelievable... and you can hear that in his playing. And he doesn't even use drugs! :D
The kit sound is beautiful. Nicely engineered. BAM !
Hey man. I think it's worth writing a comment. I've looked at this video 1 hundred times and I'm always in the same spirit.
Tears close to falling down, damn.. What a play, what a sound !
I've tried several guitars, several amps. If I wasn't sure that fingers do the sound I could have spent a lot of money to reach this sound.
Hopefully I know I have a lot of home work to do before investing more :)
Again thanks for this pure moment of pleasure !

I'm truly moved by your comment bro. Your love of the art of playing will pay off one day. You may not find that perfect amp, or reach that perfect sound, but you will be rewarded in one way or another 'cause you're a humble soul, true rarity these days.
its amazing *.*
He plays the hell out this song!
Awesome job recording this... the editing especially was stunning.
I WOULD KILL FOR THAT TONE AND GUITAR..
@baseman135 this live version will be available on itunes soon. stay tuned.
man great fucking performance phil. rocking out with just the clothes on his back with holes all over it and doesnt give a fuck playing little wing with his heart and soul thats how it should be done. well done phil.
One of the best in the world! Wow. How long does it take for you to learn a song like this?
Wow..
@depien This is a Roppoli head.
@philx1111 I thought your old version of this song was the best damn cover I ever heard, guess I was wrong cause that was simply amazing
4:10 sweet child of mine intro?? o.0
Dear God, give me 20% of this guys skills....
ok …I have done so…now go into the world and ROCK
Rocco Astoria now go my son and roooooooooooooo-
*crosses all America looking for Hollywood...*
-oooooooooooooooock
Dear God excuse him for he knows not what he is doing with your song
Haha, I know exactly what you mean. Ridiculous isn't it? :P
@@vhollund It's ok, grandpa. Go get your adult diapers changed because I think your oatmeal is ready.
I've been listening to different versions of this song for 40 years. This has to be in the top 5.
+pmoore4321 I've gotta put it an number 1. I like it better than Stevie Ray Vaughan's version. What other 4 have you heard that are competitive with it?
*@ pmoore4321*
``````````````````````````
How about *Jimmie H* No.1, *Phil X* No.2, and the rest of the world in whatever order you wish...
+1!
1 JH 2 SRV 3 PX
well i think he scored number one with that solo ^^
And that mean a hell lot considering his elders
My God I'm late to the party, the most incredible performance ever thank u phil
I love how Phil is not afraid to play up to and then past his abilities. Thats what was so great about Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. They didn't fear sliding over the edge and thus greatness was achieved. When you aren't afraid it makes you unpredictable and thats exciting.
I'm sorry but got that SRV part wrong. Just watch SRV Live at El Mocambo and judge for yourself.
Александр Суханов
EXACTLY the example I was thinking of...
You are completely incorrect about SRV. Have you watched any of his live performances?
True dat!
easily the best cover of this song..Phil nailed it
This is just incredible playing! Every note has its meaning and place in his improvisation.
apart from the sweet child o mine part hahahah i think he was just having fun there
There is nothing wrong with quoting another tune in the improv (when chord progression calls for it). The greatest jazzers have done it million times. Listen to "Cannonball" Adderley solos peppered with funny melodies borrowed from, sometimes, not very Bebop-ish tunes or Charlie Parker compositions written over the chord progression literally borrowed from other songs. It takes genius like *Phil X* to throw quotation into his improve and make it sound like his own. So, back off dude... 🐳
pseudo intellectual
It's a guitarists song that's for sure. So many covers done in completely different ways and 90% of them you can't tell which one you would prefer.
Kudos to Phil for such a dynamic performance and my respects to Jimi for such a great platform for generations following to get inspired.
They say a guitar player’s unique tone comes from their hands, but that’s only half true; the other half comes from their heart and soul. I know this because I FELT it in my heart and soul. Phil X: you keep it real and play what you feel because it works man, it just works. Thank you
Little Wing is now a rock standard
that only the top players can seriously have a chance of doing it real justice.
I have heard several covers of this piece
of Jimi magic and this is the best, the feel,
the tone and the restraint. Thank you Phil X.
+stevenjgw9 I'm not sure if "rock" is the word to be honest. I think that's one of the problems with it - that people think it's rock song, and it's more of a lullaby with a mentally loud guitar solo. (I know that babies don't like loud guitar solos, but fuckem. Lullabies are not all about the baby ffs)
I've never heard it played properly to be honest - I don't think even Jimi got it right. Everyone over-doodles it. Over-rocks it.
So much feeling. Best version. Unbelievable
If I have to be honest I like this much more than the original Jimi's version. You're one of the most ten inspiring guitarists I ever listened to and I'm working to learn this song exactly as you do in the video, this is the best solo I've ever heard in 17 years
True!
originals are often superceded. but to write the very first version is quite different.
+1
Better that Jimi’s version ? Bite your tongue !
Bryan Grabowski, hey bryan do you play guitar ? Do you compose?
Phil x solo was absolutely stellar... there is no need to get offended :) Jimi will always remain
this is the best tone Phil has ever had
That tone.....goodness gracious
Just goes to show that tone and feel are 1000x more important than overloaded passing notes to sound "fast". Great job!
This is incredible, so much passion put into the performance. Hands down the best performance since Hendrix himself.
You dont hit every note, but you play with more feeling than most players, one of my fav guitarist out there! You kick serious ass bro!
Josh Wadsworth Jimmy didn't hit every note either.
It's not about hitting every note. When you hear the notes you want, you go for them. Sometimes you miss them. Listen to Michael Brecker, he was a master and it was common for him to crack notes going for them, usually in the altissimo register. Doesn't matter though, everyone listening knew what he was going for.
that intro was cool as heck.sorry for my language
The obvious sweet child o mine reference at 4:10 xP
This made Jimi cry up there...
AbovePerfect he's technically in hell
It made me cry down here. May God bless PhilX and other guitarists another 50 years.
I'm 15 and have been playing guitar for 3 years. This guy has been a huge inspiration to me.
Kudos Phil and thanks for the upload rocky. This is a very unexpected and sweet surprise. I wasn't familiar with Phil's playing but this has convinced me it's worth my time to check his work out. Expertise AND taste - what a concept :P
Our pleasure!
This guy truly has talent.
Any idea what Phil's amp EQ settings might be here? One of the best strat tones I've heard!
I love this guy... More people must learn about him, he is our biggest chance on keeping this music alive... Thanks phil...
Best version of little wing since Hendrix. Respect Phil \^^/
and stevie ray voughan is beter
If you were right I would agree with you.
OMG. This version is INCREDIBLE. Just amazing.
Wowww... perfect sound/sunet ... beautiful words .. clearly from me becouse heare present team Jams , heare Phil X (notting) become 💕 Perfectel💕 , more good can be have 💕Jamcerl'ș💕 name this team... dark green more good collor from closses, braun from hair.. Phil is a legit living legend for those who know. A master level musician.
Amazing playing from all. Phil X at his best, having a solid rhythm section makes all the difference in the world.
Great version but hendrix version is much harder to play because of its constant flowing nature where at least playing in this style gives you chance to think about the next bit..
Feeling it's all about feeling I'm damn near tearing up good job Philx
Excellent photography, superb sound, sensational playing.
Excellent phil nailed it tones of dynamics tone and feeling
This is just beautiful.. 7 minutes of pure music, created by a master of the electric guitar..
unfucking real.
By far the best Little Wing perforamance!!! Phil x is the man!
thanks eric, the story of this performance is that right before i went into it, my buddy Lou (of Roppoli Amps) said, "hey.... Stevie Ray Vaughn died 20 years ago, today" & i felt all this emotion come over me & what you hear here is the result. the funny thing about playing from the heart is that sometimes it's awesome and sometimes it's not. if i try to recreate this performance, i suck. that's why if you see us play for 2 hours and i don't play Little Wing, it's 'cause i wasn't feeling it.
That guitar solo is just perfect
Phil's covers of this song are some of the best I have ever seen.
This version still gets me emotional. Everything just came together in this piece. Amazing.
Probably the most epic guitar playing I have ever seen I . Have to keep watching it
@davemis40 Thanks for the comments and for watching the videos. I know some are good and some are not, so thanks. I really like this one too!
Phil is a great player and a great person
I saw this guy when he was starting out with Powder at a thing called Holbrookfest. I always thought his talent way exceeded that style of music. Glad to see him playing some heartfelt music. Keep on keepin on Phil!!
What’s so insane is that I listened to this performance and all I could say is that it was the most original, meaningful, soulful performance ever. Def channeled Jimi and SRV. Jimi’s 5/70 performance of LW at Berkeley used to be my fav performance of this iconic song. Until I saw this. Then I saw Phil X’s note saying even he knew it was a special performance.
Thanks Phil and band , great interpretation , great song done their way , love it.
Great Job on a Classic
Thanks for the compliments, it is appreciated and thanks for watching.
Phils fucking energy makes all his licks and improvs so fucking tasty, you'd think it would destroy the mood, but damn he can play.
Man, I like it when he sings slow, rather than screaming...
I cry for real. Outstanding.
You are very welcome and thank you for the positive comments. Out pleasure!
this is,barre none ,the best version i have ever heard any one do,including Hendrix.Sorry Jimmy.
jimmy would agree too
Eric Gales' renditions included? How about Tibor Tátrai? Don't get me wrong I don't try to prove You wrong or outsmart you, each to his own taste I'm just curious about your opinion on those ones :)
Rick Glow before writing a comment like this, which by the way is completely opinable and not as absolute as you put it, you should at least learn to spell Jimi Hendrix's name
It's nothing at all even remotely close to using my Lord and saviors name in vain.It's only James Marshall Hendrix....James Jim Jimi Jimmy.Who are you Mr.Spell check??? Buzz of
The best play version for Little wing is SRV always
Love the tint on that fretboard
Blown Away.
4:11 - Sounds Familiar?
it was great till he started singing. I thought he was with bon jovi right now?
i love how only phil x can throw in sweet child and make it badass
That part made me jump from the seat
Not a peep in the crowd .... awesome live performance...
I've been listening to this song since 1970 - first Jimi's, then Derek and D's version, and Stevie Ray's later. Truly one of the very best (if not the best) version's of this song ever done. Mr. Phil X - hat's off to your sir, I'm not a musician, but I know tasteful playing when I hear it - and this is amazing. Really. Thank you for sharing. You need to do a live album.
Wow! That first solo was just beautiful. Amazing performance.
Phil X is the man and his guitar reviews are the bomb
@philx1111
Phil,
when you come to Paris with the Drills, I'll be in the front row at all your gigs.
Thanks for the music, the emotions, the inspiration.
The guitar playing here is incredible. Such a great feel/tone. I'm loving how the chords sound.
nobody can play it like hendrix, but men...this is getting close to it
as of this post, 103 people with no taste in music or recognition of superior talent have viewed and naysaid this killer video.
that one man who can mix sweet child o mine in little wing
Phil, you are a rock guitar pioneer
I have never heard a better version of this in my life! Better even than Jimi. Better than anything a studio ever put out. Some mighty tasty licks sprinkled in there, Phil! The greatest improvisation I've ever heard. Amazing! Just amazing! Cheers!
is that jon snow? :P
Phil X power Trio = Phil X experience
Phil Xperience
damn, that intro to the last solo, I TOTALLY FLIPPED OUT, awesome !
Excellent job! Sounds awesome... nice guitar work. Beautiful tone from the Strat and VERY tasty licks. Solid drums and bass.
this is a Nash strat with Lollar pickups and it's going through the Roppoli plexi head. no pedals through this whole piece. only riding the volume knob of the guitar to get clean or dirty. btw... thanks for the comment.
i didn't even know what it was called, thanks. but actually B and D are 3 notes apart creating a minor 3rd. in this case the bent note is the 5 of an E7 and the held note is the 7.
Just love Phil....He is the guitar player I wish I could have been, and the version of "Little Wing" I wish I could play. I have been playing guitar for a long while but about 1% of Phils talent. I'm going to give it a shot. Hope I have enough time to pick up and steal some of his technique. If I can play about 25% of this version I will be blessed. I want to play this for my kids before "The Big Day". I'm on borrowed time as I have Cancer. Thank you Rocky and your crew for this wonderful Video. You have a gift as well. I wish I saw this many years ago. Tell Phil thank you for the music from me if you ever see him again. (I'm such a big fan)... Don't believe it when people say you can't take things with you when you finally head towards the light. Music is the one gift that will remain in your soul. GOD bless all of you....
Rocky here. Thanks for the "thank you". My camera partner that did all my video work with me (and this video of Little Wing) was Jacquie Macri. It's interesting timing on this particular post (comment), as we just came from the services for "her passing" an hour ago and we are having a nice lunch. She had cancer also like you. She would probably like this post and tell you, "It's a great idea, and you should do it". If she told you in person, you would do it, ha ha, she was inspiring and great. Thanks for the reply and get her done my friend. I'm sorry you're on this cancer journey, she would tell you to treat every day like Christmas.
@@rockynashfilms Thank you Rocky. Good advice. Every day like Christmas...She must have been a wonderful lady. Take care my friend.......
You should contact Phil X about that. I don't give artists music away unless they approve it. Really appreciate you watching though. Cheers.
Phil X is truly the best guitarist of this century
guthrie................
Greg Koch... But Phil X just fucking tears shit up...
Ohhh and Johnny Hiland... there's too much talent... just not on the radio
gay :$
Mijke ter Brugge happy
Man .... you sound amazing !... go on and live with this passion that you share ... really nice ... I wish you the best ... aie aie aie ma gueule !....
Why is he so good, fuck
best version ever !!!
This is awesome! Taking on a Hendrix classic is daring, the best have paid tribute by not parroting Jimi, but adding their spirit and style. Stevie Ray, Steve Vai, and now Phil. Nice!
Fucking A Phil!! Thats playing with feeling and out of body experience...bass and drums was feeling it too!
He always keep the ora of whatever song he's playing but gives it the Phil X flavor with good taste....a true Maestro!
JAYYSSUUSSSS! How am i just hearing this now. Not many come close to SRV and Jimi but this, amazing!
That guitar tone. My goodness! Phil ripped this man. Such a great version of Little Wing.
