I met Phil at a bar in LA. He was watching this incredible jazz band (as were we all), and you could tell what an absolute fan of music he was. He was so locked into the group, smiling and just enjoying himself. I gathered up the courage to go say hi, and buy him a beer. He was everything he appears to be. There's no show. He's just a wonderful excited man and so incredibly humble. His gratitude was palpable (this was before his Bon Jovi fame). Phil is such a wonderful musician, but most importantly, he's a damn decent human being. So happy to see his career skyrocket.
I echo the same sentiments about Phil. I met him when he was in Triumph at this place in Waterloo, Ontario Canada (many moons ago) called The Red Pepper on a Tuesday night when they held open jam sessions. The guitarist for the “house band” on those Tuesday nights knew Phil from within the local music community and invited him to come out and play a few songs with them (and he did). But before the show as everyone was setting up I was introduced and Phil and I talked. He was incredibly nice, funny, humble and just so easy to talk to. It’s always good to see the good people do well. Phil is certainly one of them.
Rhett looks like he's having such a blast, you can tell he has so much respect for Phil and his overwhelming guitar chops. And I have a habit of watching anything Phil is in, dude is such a happy, genuine person and his enthusiasm is contagious.

I also play bouzouki as a profession and only want to say that the 6-string bouzouki is still very much alive, and has not been replaced by the 8-string even if the 8-string is more standard since Xiotis, who is a later bouzouki player, not one of the originals. Also the picture shown is "Irish bouzouki", not the kind that Phil X is talking about. Other than that, this was a great video. Thank you. :)
Rick was like a kid with a brand new toy having Phil X in his studio: show us this, show us that, do that weird thing, interrupting him with another question or comment about his playing! Of course, it was all good; Phil appreciated others appreciating his talent and musicality, taking no offense whatsoever. For us spectators, the whole thing was quite amusing and groovy to watch! Definitely one of your top episodes, Rick! THANX!

Loved this free-style format Rick. Phil's playing is another level up. I'm fortunate to have common friends, and have experienced the X up close in bars and private parties.
Phil X and I played on the same line up a few years ago at the MusikMesse in Frankfurt, and I remember him playing all that Greek stuff at the soundcheck, it was insanely cool - and still is!!! Great guy
Not a musician, but love RnR and Rick’s videos… honestly didn’t know who Phil X is but am floored by his playing… did a Google search and was blown away that he is 55 years old!! Looks like he is 30…
This is such a great vid Mr B. Not only because of the incredible exposition of extraordinary technique... but mostly because this what we need. SHEER JOY OF MUSIC. Thank you once again for brightening my day and inspiring me to spend the next several hours loving the act of playing.
Just referenced greg koch in my comment as well. They both play with so much joy and humor-that’s what makes us smile and laugh not just the virtuosity.
He played things that noone even ever heard. He surprised me many times in this video. New stuff never played before. Great great. Words are pointless just enjoying.
I’m lucky to be married to a Greek with all of her family still in Greece. We to Greece multiple times per year, had our marriage celebration there and always go out of my way to hear traditional music. You can hear great Bouzouki all over the place and it never ceases to amaze how great they improvise and the overall feeling of the music, while being very advanced rhythmically. It’s really like the best wailing blues.
One of my associates from university (forty years ago) is originally from Greece. He was in rock bands in his younger days, but got back to his roots about twenty years ago and formed a band called “The Rembetika Hipsters.” Playing rembetika music (early 20th century urban Greek folk/bluesy music) won’t make you rich, but it will get you a steady Friday/Saturday night gig with a belly dancer in a Greek restaurant for several years.
@@meadish haha. I know greek language sounds great in foreign ears. Analysis, Thesis, sigma, Tau, zeta, beta, theta, magnetic, helios, Helicopter (not related to helios in any way, sound similar), Chromosome, chroma, cycle, and countless others that are derive or are exactly the same. Greek language is expertly crafted and there is little discrepancy. However the origin of the word bouzouki is Turkish.
Amazing player and great guy. In his improv licks, you can hear EVH and Jimmy Page style in his phrasing. A style that exudes his enthusiasm and desire to have fun playing, and share that with his audience.
Love PhilX, such a beast. So glad I found him on Fretted Americana way back in the day. One of faves, hope the Drills make it to the Motor city one day. Maybe it’s time to finally go see Bon Jovi.
It is very underrated. I wonder what would have happened if Markos was allowed to leave Greece and tour the world. Unfortunately Markos had a criminal record for going AWOL from the army, so the Greek government would not give him a passport, so he never left Greece his entire life, even though he is the most important musician in modern Greek music. It's a shame.
If you guys want to listen to the full version of that first song that Phil X is playing, it´s called: "Perasmenes mou Agapes" by Manolis Chiotis. It´s an absolute classic and Chiotis is considered one of the greatest bouzouki virtuosos of all time, basically the equivalent of Django Reinhardt or EVH on the bouzouki and an innovator on the instrument. There are countless versions of the song, incl. a pretty cool "metalized" cover by Gus G (Firewind, former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist), who rearranged the song for electric guitar.
From Rick who is so eloquent and knows every sus chord by name you know his mind is blown when he says DO THE WEIRD THING! annd starts bouncing around around like a kid!
Honestly, Phil X looks like he's always thrilled to be playing guitar. Just such an upbeat and funny guy

Great guy
Phil! Another great Canadian guitarist. Make us proud Phil.
Phil x is the most likeable guitarist ever.
We need to see him and Paul Gilbert interviewed together.
Not a musician, but love RnR and Rick’s videos… honestly didn’t know who Phil X is but am floored by his playing… did a Google search and was blown away that he is 55 years old!! Looks like he is 30…
Probably a vegetarian. That’s the fountain of youth! Surely works out too.
Yeah, his genetics aren't fair!
I thought he was 30 ish too!
Probably being able to live his Passion contributes too…
I thought he was ±30 too.
I love Phil X. The energy the guy excudes is amazing. He just loves playing... I think Rick, Rhett and all of us are equally blown away.,.........
I may not have learned about Phil the "normal" way, but I simply *loved* his appearances on Fretted Americana. Such an awesome person
Thought Fretted Americana was the normal way to learn about Phil... :)
I would love to hear something about how Phil played Jon Lord's organ solo in his Highway Star cover. That was ridiculous
To me, PhilX’s magnetism is not from his amazing guitar skills but from his real and genuine nice guy personality!
This is such a great vid Mr B. Not only because of the incredible exposition of extraordinary technique... but mostly because this what we need. SHEER JOY OF MUSIC. Thank you once again for brightening my day and inspiring me to spend the next several hours loving the act of playing.
So much YES! The joy of music is so lacking these days - it's nuts.
Phil X is unbelievable! I would love to see him and Greg Koch in the same room jamming....talk about the creativity!
Just referenced greg koch in my comment as well. They both play with so much joy and humor-that’s what makes us smile and laugh not just the virtuosity.
@@jeremyversusjazz true! Personality and virtuosity
Phil is my new guitar hero. Such a down to earth guy on top of one of the most talented guitar players.
Greek here: modern greek pop bouzouki music is ASS. Old classix bouzouki songs however are Amazing.
@@ioannisdenton righto. I was talking about classics, that’s what I seek out while there and listen to.
@@ioannisdenton Hi. I just wanted to say BOUZOUKI because it is a great word in any language.
Greek bouzouki music is stupidly underrated, and I'm really glad Phil's doing it justice in some way!
He makes me proud as a Greek
@@tasosdiaforetico7377 I believe it is Xenidis (Ξενίδης)
@@tasosdiaforetico7377 not sure…
@@tasosdiaforetico7377 Θεόφιλος Ξενίδης Theophilos Xenidis
"Do the weird thing!" That's perfect for a mug or t-shirt.
From Rick who is so eloquent and knows every sus chord by name you know his mind is blown when he says DO THE WEIRD THING! annd starts bouncing around around like a kid!
