I'm abot to be 57 years old, I've seen and heard countless guitar players in my life and Phil X is THE Best cover guitarist I have ever seen or heard in my life. He is an amazing player.
I can’t believe how I haven’t heard of Phil X before, what a player, he’s got it all. Very sympathetic to original versions but also manages to totally knock it out the park. What a talented guy. Fair play to him 👏👏👏👏👍🇬🇧
HOLY CRAP!!!! How have I missed this?? And I just thought that Phil was Bon Jovi’s “guitar player”. He’s a monster! I’ll be hard pressed to find a more dynamic and virtuoso performance of this, my favorite Purple song on You Tube.
It`s guys like Phil X that make me wanna stick to playing the instrument, he just keeps putting me in a " HOLY SH#T, I WANNA DO THAT" state, and props to rockynashfilms for making an amazing video.
The "Non musician" in the band rocks big time! There's never enough credit for the amazing drummer who is so 'insrumental" in making this amazing 3 piece work so well! You guys all rock! Creme of the crop of professional musicians here! Killer Guitar and Bass work!
Playing Purple stuff like this without a keyboard player just shows what a higher musical and creative level Phil X and his power trio are at. Completely amazing. I'm jealous to the audience back then who got to see them live.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! He's a local boy from where I live. I always say he's got "L.A. Chops". I don't know where a Toronto boy gets chops like that! I always picture in L.A. all the guitar monsters know each other and can get jam it out. Phil lives here! We don't have much opportunity for crazy talented guitarists to do this. How did he get so good?! Same with Pete Thorn! My co-worker is from the same circle as Phil. They know the same people in the music scene here. Most, save for Phil, never made it and have regular jobs. He just finally got to meet Phil after Phil put on a little private small show at a music store owned by somebody the both are friends with here 2 weeks ago. Co-worker confirmed that he's just the nicest most down to earth guy. Says he's talking to him, chewing the fat, as 2 regular guys...it then hit my co-worker (who also plays guitar for a long time), "Holy Crap! I'm chatting with a guy who is like the Canadian EVH or Canadian Randy Rhoads, etc, and he's just so normal!" AMAZING!!!
Phil is a sensational guitarist, and a damn good vocalist to boot, so I don't think he's underrated at all. But tell me, how highly rated do you think anyone (not just Phil) should be when they're known for playing other people's classics? Don't lose sight of the fact that we''re talking about music that's been around for 40+ years and covered many times over.
Brilliant...so glad I grew up in that era where we opened the vinyl's for the first time and cranked the quadraphonic up to ten through 4 wonderful speakers...Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Heart, Boston, Neil Young, Judas Priest, Uriah Heep, and of course Deep Purple...to name just a few...those were the days my friend...Yes they were the days
@@ronsperski7132 YEP did that with ZEPPELIN live at Maddison Square garden and played Whole Lotta Love over and over for about 3 hours then moved on to Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc... haha
Dayum! That is a Rock and Roll guitar indoctrination. I am a cork sniffing critic when it comes to guitar playing for any music genre. That was freaking impressive. All of these guys are seriously good professional musicians.
Had not seen Phil X before, shame on me!! This guy plays ridiculously well, man, the way he covers both the keyboard and the guitar solos in just insane. Apart from being Bon Jovi's guitar, I've seen has also collaborated with quite a lot other people, but I would really like to see him develop a solo project. Anyways, great stuff🤘🤘
That was a fist full of bad ass shoved right down the ol snout!! Holy shit that was incredible!! A true guitarist's guitarist! Great line up! All hitting it spot on!!
Damn!! I finally got to see Deep Purple in 1985 (I was 25 at the time) and this took me back to the best concert I’d seen!! They opened with Highway Star and for this young woman in a tiny town in Texas (Odessa), I was in Heaven again!! Phil you nailed it and thanks for posting this video and sharing your intense talent with us!! You definitely ROCK!!!
My god, this is the best cover of highway star i've ever seen. In fact, this is the best cover of a song i've ever seen. He plays both guitar and keys with perfection and my mind is just blown by this. Keep rockin' Phil X!!!
Hello Phil X. Im also of Hellenic origen. Our ancestors invented the seven musical modes used in every genre of western music. The progenator of the Hellenes is Apollo the sheppard boy musician. Though Im not at your playing level, I fly on my guitar like an Apollonian just the same. Phil X Rocks!!!!
OMFG! I'll just say it again, this is how it's done. Bass player nailed Ian Gillian? Phil blows people away and makes them want play more at the same time! If I ever learn to play those arpeggios like that, I fucking will. Great recording to, thanks
Everyone is raving about Phil, deservedly so, but the singing absolutely kills it too. Great performance.
The voice reminds me of Paul Di'Anno
Whoa.......killer vocals...!!!!
Now that's some high energy R&R ...!!!

He’s got a ton of original music as well. Check out “I wish my beer was as cold as your heart”.
About to be 60 bro. All the best!
Phil X is a rock and roll legend. He can shred in the most cool way.
The best Highway Star cover ever.
The Chickenfoot version is better... But this is good.
@@DMDvideo10 check out highway star, live street band in chile
@@johnmclaughlin7455 I've seen and heard it! Very cool.
This guy is amazing. He is playing the keyboard parts on the guitar at the same time as the guitar parts,,,and doing the Harmony's. Very impressed!!
He's amazing. Due check out how satriani also does it which is also great. Check his anya version live too with deep purple.
I remember the day I first listened to this Highway Star cover back in Spring 2012. I had cried. Now I feel the same. Phil X is an awesome musician. 🤘
Phil X is amazing, his playing is wild and creative.

Do a search on UA-cam for Phil, there are tons videos out there with the real Phil.
He's a studio ace from way back - played on a lot of songs.
Hands down one of the best covers of this song!

That voice is simply untouchable. Damn........
Pbil X is one of the greatest guitarists in the world!!! Great rock band as well!!!
I love that phil doesnt need a shit ton of gain to hide behind.his tone and playing is truly awsome

Jesus Phil... Dude is way too underrated...
I agree .. He can play anything. The only knock is he doesn't write his own stuff.

Those bazuki lessons paid off
That intro with them both... Most epic part of the whole song in my opinion.
drummer is awsome .A three piece band, you can only pull that off if each member is absolutely awsome.
Rick Glow Yeah buddy, that drummer nailed it!
Wow! A three-piece rocking Highway Star - love it!!
Wow, almost made me not notice the absence of the iconic Hammond organ! What can I say, Phil, yet another stellar performance. Bravo, gents!
That solo was flawless and so much more
Fantastic playing, esp by Phil! Not only can he shred solos like crazy, but he plays a superb rhythm guitar. Thanks for recording and uploading this.

Good job with this cover! It wasn’t over done and it turned out very well.
