That is the one nice thing about Game Stop. If you preorder something (that you're picking up at the store) they always know exactly what you're looking for as soon as you walk in, and they've never lost my copy or anything. My old GameStop used to even call ahead the day before to remind me. A lot of times they'll even still have midnight release parties.
Also I could be wrong about this but I believe not being able to return open physical games is like a law. I believe it's an anti-piracy thing. I learned that the hard way when I tried to return Elden Ring.

I just want to say, losing access to certain games, even higher profile ones, is certainly an issue, Driver: San Francisco has been completely unlisted for years, even on PC, so there’s no way to play it right now unless you buy a physical PS3 or Xbox 360 copy.
