I really like using music cassette cases for my Gameboy games. It's easy to print an insert that gives you a front and side cover and they stack & store really well. Plus you can put them into old-school multi cassette holders for display. The only issue is adding a foam insert in each so that the cartridge doesn't slide around.

the sad thing about the Saturn Analogue and the Dreamcast controller is that they are the ONLY first party controller with a "no drift" analogue stick due to them being based on Hall Effect Sensors. No wear and tear here - everything else I know works with 150 year old tech -> the good old Potentiometer that WILL fail and die when used.

Sansui made a controller for the NES that is almost identical to the Famicom's controller. It also features a slider switch for the A and B button that allow you to set how fast you want auto fire. It also has a headphone jack at the bottom of the controller for some weird mono output that changes ears depending on which direction your pressing. Overall it is my favorite controller for the NES.

For most games the 6 button pad was essentially a 4 or 5 button pad, with one or two of the functions required by the 3 button scheme becoming obsolete in the transition.

Don't get me wrong, I have boxed copies of a majority of the pokemon games and that's incredible, I love playing the original carts, but an everdrive is insanely useful and convenient, especially for someone that doesn't have 10s of thousands of dollars to finish every system collection that they want. I seriously bought the SEGA joystick JUST for the included Rapid Fire adapter. I would then connect a regular joypad to it. Oddly, I mostly used the rapid fire because I loved playing Monopoly and holding the rapid fire sped up the computer's turns. Also, it was MORE comfortable to play with it in your hands like the Atari joystick and actually move the stick from the bottom instead of the top grip.

Better off buying new contact pads for old controllers. Cheaper and just as effective even if you need to replace them more often than original pads. What's great about 2D gen console controllers is there really aren't any "mechanical" points of failure to be had like you have with new gens with triggers and sticks etc. They really can last forever with occasional pad changes to keep them fresh.

Careful with those retrobit products. They look and feel very similar to their original controllers but are built with some cheap internal parts. I bought two of the retrobit Saturn controllers last year and the d-pads broke within a few hours of gameplay on both controllers. the actuator cross in the d-pad was made with a very fragile plastic. It seems like the best modern 3rd party controllers are made by 8bitdo, they have a great Saturn/genesis 6 button style controller alternative.

Here's the thing about the Dreamcast controller and the wire being attached at the wrong end which no one ever seems to pick up on:
The controller has a little groove/clip on the underside of the controller that you can attach the wire to so that it holds to the back of the controller again. Why would Sega do this in the first place? Well, I can't even tell you the number of controllers I've had in my life where the wire has worn out and I've had to buy a new one, because the wire bends and over time wears out, ultimately exposing the inner wires and sometimes even snapping off completely, as happened with an Xbox 360 controller charging wire I had not too long ago. When the wire is attached to the back of a controller it is just a physical law of the Universe. Given enough time, and enough use, massive bending and eventual damage, possibly even completely breaking, will happen.
Sega, god love them, saw this and figured out how to beat that tendency with 2 very simple innovations and, disappointingly, EVERYONE missed it. Everyone except me, that is. That little groove/clip for the wire to be seated inside prevents so much movement and lessens the bending significantly enough in the wire that, if not completely preventing the wearing out of the wire over time as the bending gets worse, it certainly prolongs the expected life of the controller significantly.
Do have a look at your Dreamcast controller and make use of what Sega gave you in order to keep it working as intended for longer.
Disclaimer: I am from the UK, and as such I had a UK model. It's possible the North American Dreamcast controllers didn't have this innovation, though I can't imagine Sega not including it.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  Місяць тому

[Try4ce] It's there on North American controllers, and I actually agree, to some extent. While I've never had issues with controller wires wearing down on any controllers for any systems, I get what Sega was doing with the bottom wire, and personally it never bothered me. Seems to weird out most folks though.

I've found that Gamerz Tek clone-consoles have so-far always worked with Everdrives. Mainly because they are pure hardware clones; no software emulation at all. You can also usually choose between original outputs or modern outputs. I've seen other clone-consoles that boast HDMI, but they often mangle the color pallet. Like, why is Mario now wearing fuchsia overalls..? Ew. Somehow, Gamerz Tek clones don't have this problem. I'm not sure what they're doing differently, but it works! Oh and, NO ADDED LAG. They play exactly like the originals do. It's also a nice bonus too that they don't cost too much. xD

Yes, it works very well for those Capcom fighters as well. Also, the Dual Analog (not DualShock) is the most comfortable and best controller with dual analog sticks ever made. PlayStation's d-pad was weird at first but I think it's the best d-pad ever made, it's so comfortable to use but still very precise. Unlike Nintendo's d-pad that can't do diagonals very well or Sega's d-pad that isn't that precise.

Finally beat the game like 20 years later when I dL'd it on XBOX360. Took the time to grind hard and build my characters up! I'd finally see that same friend while he was working at GAMESTOP and I was "Bro!!!... I finally beat Phantasy Star 2!"
He just laughed and said "well that took a while!" And I'd told him about the trick he showed me to avoid fights ended up totally backfiring on me! LMADO!

You seem to have forgotten that putting the Joy Stick™ on the left side was to screw with people in the arcades, since most are right-handed. So, "30 years of muscle memory" is really 30 years of forcing people to become left-handed when gaming.

Completely and utterly wrong. It made much more sense to have the buttons on the right side, and this ridiculous myth about some arcade owner switch things around is nonsense.
      I was there.
I played Space Invaders and Galaxian and all the other games and they did NOT originally have the buttons on the left. You can go and look at pictures of the first machines and find out for yourself. Games like Pac-Man had the controller in the middle, because you didn't need buttons, and you would use your right hand for that, which makes sense because you are obviously going to use your dominant hand for a one handed activity. However when you start to get to games with multiple buttons, it makes much more sense to have them on the right, because people are right handed, and it requires more dexterity to be selecting and pressing different buttons than it does to just be moving.
I mean ... do you seriously think Nintendo put the D-Pad on the left hand side because some unscrupulous arcade owner in America had switched the buttons around? Before you answer, you might want to be aware that there was no video game crash in Japan (or anywhere other than North America actually), and the NES was out in Japan, with the D-Pad on the left hand side, before it went to America...

Very good insight. I myself always prefer the original NES controllers overall as well. So many years of using that basic rectangle block controller that nothing feels the same. Same goes for the PlayStation controller. My brain just feels at ease when I’m using a PS controller vs Switch/Xbox. Don’t get me wrong I do love the Xbox controller especially their trigger layout but nothing has a feel like the PS controller and same goes from that Original NES pad

Am I the only person that put the Wii remote inside of a Mario Kart steering wheel 4 games where you have to hold but controller horizontally. I have big hands but it made it completely comfortable and anyone I showed it to back-in-the-day for Super Mario Wii or punch out absolutely loved it and used it every time.

The master system arcade stick is arranged normally as near every joystick is right handed even if joypads and modern arcade sticks are still left handed. I was always led to believe that the only reason the stick on the left and the buttons on the right is a thing is because early arcade manufacturers wanted to make games more difficult to play compared to right to move as is more natural. I know these days that controllers seem more natural being left to control, but think of things like flight sticks, they are right handed with throttle on the left. Mouse and keyboard as well for that matter unless you are left handed I guess.

For the 8bit, 16bit and even 32bit and above generations ... despite possibly having original hardware, i choose emulation. Helps me avoid some of the costs associated with trying to get original hardware working in the way i want it to with the controller i want it to.
