Great video and interesting information,I think I'll start using 5-40 full synthetic in the summer and 5-30 in winter. It gets very, very cold here but in the summer it's very hot as well that no one likes to go outside. So it makes sense to use a oil thickness according to the outside temperatures.
5w is a 5w for winter. Makes no difference. Your engine is operating at the same temp year round as long as your cooling system is working as designed.
Great video and plenty of information in here. I was a little confused about what grade of oil to put in my Subaru Outback and after watching and listening carefully, I know much better now. I will go 5w-30 for the winter and 5w-40 for the summer. Up here in Massachusetts we need to be careful with the type of oil we put in our vehicles. Thank you so much for this video.
There is a very good mechanic guy in my country, quite popular among 350z owners and he recommends 10w50 for daily driving mainly in traffic. It may be strange but it has it upsides. With 5w30 and 5w40 sitting in traffic and accelerating very often it damages camshaft bearing because in these engines it never gets enough oil on these while engine is hot. This kind of oil is like water in these situations. 10w50 on other hand it's working smooth. About Castrol. It's so easy and desirable to make a knockoff product with this brand so it's not recommended in my country to look for it. We use Mobil1 mostly in sports cars as their packaging is not that easy to counterfeit or reuse with other oil in it.
Anthony you have ALWAYS provided helpful & interesting content for G35 owners. You have been the prime mechanical information resource for me for my 08 G35 (265K Miles) on YT. Thank you for taking your time to make these videos. I live in a very warm climate in US & am gonna try a 10W 40 full synthetic to try to stretch out my motor for maybe another 50K before a rebuild. If you do not abuse these HR motors - they truly are long lasting expertly designed machines straight from the factory - even with no modifications.
That's awesome you like the videos so much still. I agree I thunk the VQ in general is a great all around engine. You're starting to see more DE's used in swaps in older lighter cars.
An oil rated 40 sae is guaranteed to meet 30 sae and 20 sae but not the other way round. At cold end any sae 0w rated oil meets 5w, 10w 15w and 20w but not the other way round .
Depends of the mileage of your vehicule 5w40 will quiet down your valves and fill the gap of wear. Higher than 100000km you should switch. You'll probably not loosing so many mpgs
I looked in the manual on my 2004 Z and my 2014 Q60S and neither recommend a 5W40 or 10W40. Both say 5W30 or 10W30. I have tried a 0W40 Euro spec oil from Mobil 1 and it does seem to work really good. Oil pressure does not go insanely high when the car is cold and it seems to make the valve clatter a little quieter once warmed up fully. My brother's BMW calls for this weight. What I find is that the flow is better with 0W-40 when cold while maintaining good oil pressure when the engine is fully warmed up. Now, I am speaking of a daily driver where you probably start the car and start driving down the road with in a minute or two. The big thing with modern Japanese engines is that their clearance between parts is very tight. This is especially true for Honda engines.
For my VQ37, switched from Pennzoil Ultra Plat 5w30 (can shear down close to a 20 weight) to Mobil 0w40 Euro Formula (shears down close to a 30 weight). Cold idle sounds lowered slightly (could be placebo), but I definitely noticed a lot less tapping/clicking sounds when I rev it out to the redline. Now I plan on running the 0w40 as my winter, and plan on using the Mobil 5w40 Euro Formula as my summer fill, as the tech sheet does say that it is a little thicker at operating temps.
I do the same for my 2gr, oil pressures seem lower on startup and after spirited driving the pil pressure remains stable and doesn't dip below 20 psi, would drop down to 10 with 5w30. Using mobile 1 euro 040 and edge 530.
Well I got a great deal on 5:30 liquid Molly. Really good high quality German oil. When I bought the car last oil change was back in 2017 and it had only been driven 1100 miles this weekend I just hit 39,000 original miles!
I live in a place where the weather goes from 47° C to -12° C in winter. it's a older car from the late 90s, Honda. I think 5w40 does better in summer. 5w30 for winter. also the filter bypass valve pressure matters to building oil pressure. I notice a stiffer spring in summer helps and in winter it doesn't matter if it has a low bypass pressure.
I stay in Miami. temps get to 88-98 Fahrenheit. I also tend to have a heavy foot. I’m between 5w40 and 10w40 What would you recommend? What does the “5” mean as well as the “10”? With thicker oil will there be any power loss? Thank you 🙏🏾 also I really appreciate the vids though it was taken years ago. It is still informative. I will install the same front lip you have thanks to your other video. Once again I really appreciate this Channel. Subbed!
That temp graph with the 40 weight oil is from 2006 and older manuals. From 2007 and up Nissan no longer printed it. Only the 5w 30 was recommended all the way until they made the 3.0T motor for the Q50. At least for cars in the U.S. that is. Not sure why they no longer included 10w40.

Hi thanks for the information. I stay in india, was using 5w-30 till now. However this service interval i will change it to 5w-40 since it's tropical climate always 30+celcius. I was just scared switch to 5w-40 because the manual had nothing mentioned apart from 5w-30, A3/b4 rating . Watching your video made the decesion easier for me. Clocked 80,000 kms till date . I hope it works! Your thoughts?
On my 04 maxima with a DE I used 10w-30 up until ~115k miles when the timing chain noise developed and I used 10w-40 until I replaced the tc assembly. Now at 140k, 0w-40 euro running great. Oil always changed at 3000 or less.
@@wgwspoon929 slightly thicker than the standard 5w-30 at operating temp. If you end up making the change try replacing maybe half a quart with marvel mystery oil. My old accord eventually consumed less oil after running some
In our VQs we have VVT and solenoids that depend on a specific oil viscosity to run normally and not clog up. Id stick with the recommended 5w30 or 10w30 for warmer temps
@@AnthonyJ350 The manual I have says 5w30 to be used for pretty much all ambient temperatures and 10w30 for -18c and above. I might've missed the 5w40 part but who knows. The thing is I've seen cases where people used thicker oils or "Oil stabilizers" like lucas oil and it ruined the VVT solenoids and sometimes even the heads. But then again each case is different what have you personally experienced with thicker oils? Any lifter ticking noise or anything like that?
@@AnthonyJ350 I read on some 350z/g35 forums of people using higher viscosity oil to try and reduce oil consumption and ending up ruining their VVT solenoids, cam gears and getting check engine codes after switching oils. the only oil I got a beef with is the 0W16 for the new 2018+ toyota cars. it also splashes everywhere during oil changes and I gotta use scotch pad everytime. I've seen old 2003 camrys go 650,000 miles on 5W30 but Idk about these new ones. only time will tell.

(Both oils will be amzoil). Thank you sir🌹
I think either oil will be fine, Amzoil is a great product. I lean towards 5W40 because it's so hot in your area. Main thing is I would still change the oil every 5,000KM.
AnthonyJ350 every 3k or or 6 months. Iv heard of motors blowing not cause of the miles on the oil but not changing it within 6 months. These motors are very sensitive to good oil. Tight tolerances. 👍🏼
@@bfrankz3332 If that were the case wouldn't Frontiers, Pathfinders, Altimas, Maximas etc be "blowing" all the time? I like to change my oil every 3 months typically but we know the general public doesn't adhere to good maintenance schedules.
What are your thoughts on 0W-40? I’ve read online that it works good for the VQ and also a lot of the performance cars (GTR, Hellcat etc) require it as well. It seems to meet the parameters better that 5w30 and 5w40 (in theory) since it has better cold flow capability with also better operating temp protection.
I've been running Amsoil 5w30 for my last 2 changes in the Z and haven't looked back. Way smoother idle compared to every other oil I've tried. Also, thought it was funny... I also have a semi-built 4.8
Thanks very informative. I currently have 5w-30 in my engine, and would like to switch to 5w-40. From your personal standpoint, would you do an engine oil flush before switching or just switch over?
I would just switch right over to 5W40 with a new oil filter. If you drive a lot, you can change the oil prematurely. When I broken in new cam in my Silverado, I changed the oil a few times after 2-400 KM to get all the extra metal filings out. I also run magnets on everything. ua-cam.com/video/Lec_ykPhV8A/v-deo.html

Awesome video and info. I did a service, went to 15w40 as it hardly ever goes below 15deg C but can hit 40deg C although the highest most of the tim is around the 32deg C mark. Rather stay indoors passed that lol. A few thousand km after using this oil I ran bearings, gave me huge mental block against the oil, but the motor was on 170-180k km and a friend says it was worked on, and this video clears a few things up. Going forward for my climate, I’m think of going 10w40. I love in Durban South Africa for interest sake, advice otherwise if you think I should use something else.
two questions: when you say a 40 weight can increase poor fuel economy, you say this bc a thicker oil will be a little more hard on the valve train right? I live in Tennessee and it gets as hot as 90 degrees close to 100 even during the summer so I plan to run a 40 weight, what’s your opinion on running regular 5w40 vs 5w40 high mileage, I assume the high mileage oil has additives that makes the oil last longer than regular? Either way I’m thinking both will protect the engine better regardless bc a 160k mile engine is still better off with a 40 weight.
I was saying less fuel economy because of more friction vs a lighter weight. For your temperatures definitely 5W40 will be a good match. Hight mileage oil is suppose to have additives that recondition seals. I just use 5W40 Castrol Edge (has all the Euro certifications for Audi and Porche) and I'll even use it in my high mileage Silverado with a 4.8L V8.

I looked it up and it says it’s not compatible. According to the manual, it’s not, but these new oils these days are backwards compatible with just about anything like gf-6, what a good seal conditioner to add with that 5/40 you used to make it a high mileage? LM maybe? Also, did you notice any performance differences with the 540 versus 530? My engine is pretty damn quiet right now 540 might make it silent which would be awesome.
I suggest you to use same oil. You sholdn't change depending summer & winter, 5W-30 you can still use higher than 40degree even up to 50degree. I'm using it in UAE. 5W-30 makes engine quite, a bit in smooth acceleration and better fuel consumtion than 5w-40
I actually really like that graph for oil temp ranges. My area definitely should run 5w-40 or 10w-40. It's always well above freezing but it easily gets into the 35c range during the summer. Although, I think unless it's really cold where you live, the 5w40 or 10w40 is probably better because VQ's run hot, and it won't really matter outside temps as much since the motor temps are regulated by a thermostat.
I think you're in a situation where, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Keep doing what you're doing if it's smooth and no leaks. I assume you change the oil every 3-5k miles?

i used 5w-30 in corolla 2.0 L in middle east with temp above 50c in summer, but i am thinking to shift to 5w-40 even if the manual doesn't mention this, they just said " if you are driving in hard condition you may raise the velocity without specifying any number, i have noticed that after 6500 K, oil level changed little which trigger point in my head, my car engine is new " about 16000 K' only, so why oil level goes down in only 6500k. thats why i will use 5w-40
If ur car engine is turbo charged then it will slowly reduce oil level after 5k drive a slight less it will become. this you will have to just refil a bit. This is what i'm doing to my Audi Q5 in UAE. I do refil when it's reduced little.

Thanks for sharing your experience!
I looked in the manual on my 2004 Z and my 2014 Q60S and neither recommend a 5W40 or 10W40.
Both say 5W30 or 10W30. I have tried a 0W40 Euro spec oil from Mobil 1 and
it does seem to work really good. Oil pressure does not go insanely high
when the car is cold and it seems to make the valve clatter a little quieter
once warmed up fully.
My brother's BMW calls for this weight. What I find is that the flow is
better with 0W-40 when cold while maintaining good oil pressure when the
engine is fully warmed up. Now, I am speaking of a daily driver where you
probably start the car and start driving down the road with in a minute or two.
The big thing with modern Japanese engines is that their clearance between
parts is very tight. This is especially true for Honda engines.
It's possible 10W40 is an update for acceptable weight. You saw in the videos 2 separate sources, and the Haynes manual cover older years.
Thank you bro, just got my Zed. Tips are really nice 👌🏽
Glad the videos are helping you! Check out my 350Z Playlist, I have a lot more.
Great video 💯💯 really learned something
Glad to hear the video helped!
Thanks for sharing!
Should I run this on my 06 g35 de?
I do the same for my 2gr, oil pressures seem lower on startup and after spirited driving the pil pressure remains stable and doesn't dip below 20 psi, would drop down to 10 with 5w30. Using mobile 1 euro 040 and edge 530.
Well I got a great deal on 5:30 liquid Molly. Really good high quality German oil. When I bought the car last oil change was back in 2017 and it had only been driven 1100 miles this weekend I just hit 39,000 original miles!
Nice! That's a good brand of oil!
Great video,I was wondering what different oils would do
Thank you, there was a lot of misinformation regarding 40 weight oil and most people didn't realize Nissan states you can put it in the car.
5w 40 is the best choice ( Karachi Pakistan)
I think so
I live in a place where the weather goes from 47° C to -12° C in winter. it's a older car from the late 90s, Honda. I think 5w40 does better in summer. 5w30 for winter. also the filter bypass valve pressure matters to building oil pressure. I notice a stiffer spring in summer helps and in winter it doesn't matter if it has a low bypass pressure.

With thicker oil will there be any power loss?

There probably is minimal power loss with a thicker oil. I use 5W40 Castrol synthetic. The hottest I drove in was 38 degrees Celsius and in traffic.
To Hit EPA ratings. 5W40 synthetic will flow as easily as 5W30 conventional.

In our VQs we have VVT and solenoids that depend on a specific oil viscosity to run normally and not clog up. Id stick with the recommended 5w30 or 10w30 for warmer temps
Even though the manual says it's fine. Car is rated for 10W30 conventional. So what happens when you put in 5W40 synthetic?

two questions: when you say a 40 weight can increase poor fuel economy, you say this bc a thicker oil will be a little more hard on the valve train right? I was saying less fuel economy because of more friction vs a lighter weight. For your temperatures definitely 5W40 will be a good match. I use castrol Edge HM 5w30 now, i’d like to try 5W 40 but they don’t make a high mileage (seal conditioners) I see you’re using the 540 Castrol edge.
No issues with 5W40 in my car. If it's good enough for Porsche it's good enough for this Nissan engine.

If u have to to top up oil every couple days then defenetly there is oil leak. To check ur oil leak is easy after driving for a long, park ur car in a clean area where u can see if any oil drop u can notice, then repair engine kit to reduce oil leak.
Manual says 5w30 for my 1.6 turbo engine , since it’s got 70k when bought used , should I switch to 5w40 ?
You'll have to research more if that engine uses a thicker oil in hotter climates.
Anyone have experience running 10w30? I live near Palm Springs (CA, US) where temps reach 130 F, and probably reach 40 F in winter since it’s a desert. would 10w30 be good all around? or should i switch to 5w30 for winter.

Hey I have E220d 2016 and my service put 5w-40. I am wondering if it makes the car slower because of the thickness ? Should I put 5w-30 ??
I prefer 5W40 if the engine is compatible because I theory it provides more protection mainly in heat. Just run a good synthetic and it will flow.
