I brazed panels 45 years ago, before that I use hot lead with wooden paddles for rust holes... I'm an old autobody man...
@@captseamus i always thought lead soldering would work, we used it in sheet metal it held quite well
How did you braze panels and not have them warp? I tried it with a map torch and this happened to me!
I don't know what you do nowadays because everything is plastic plastic gears. Pretty much 95% of the car is plastic so I'm worth the showing this for find a metal car. Good luck!

Dad used to make and gas weld all types of patches. All the old metal workers have long since passed on. Knew a guy that made model A fenders from scratch, including the rolled edges.
I've got a 66' Holden, 78' Chrysler valiant and a 78' ford escort van. I've done a lot of rust repairs and fabrication work and much more to be done so I know how impressive that would be to make guards from scratch
This is known as scalloping in aviation. Do it all the time as a structures guy. And no, there's no warping at all.
Live in NW Ohio. Buddy shops will not even talk about repairs to rust area. It's a lost art.😢

Yes you said it . Any welding hot enough to weld is also hot enough to warp , welding from one side to the other without controlling the heat will warp any thin metal. I watched super talented welders show they were not fabricators by making beautiful welds with warping that ruined the project 😅😅😅

It's a laser welder the concentration of heat is in a much much smaller area and doesn't cause the piece to get that hot it actually cools down very fast

Nope. He wouldn't fry it even if he didn't disconnect it.
If you keep the ground from the welder close to the point of welding no shunt current should reach the electronics. But it's still a good idea to remove the battery starting with the negative yes...😊

Use backing strip
A butt weld is not the strongest, but it doesn't need to be, in this particular application. This patch will be stronger than the surrounding metal.

You can not fill gaps or stitch with a lasar welder, the wire pushes and controls the bead. Exspensive too
