Safer but not as bright. Been using candles for years and never had one catch fire. Not that it couldn't but it's been safe enough. I ship them with the battery tea lights though.
metalmulisha the candle is far enough away that a t light flame won't reach the top but if you're worried about it you could always put a small chert metal plate in the lid or use a flameless candle.
If your wood splits like that you can always shoot a little wood glue in there and clamp it. That way it does fall apart in you while you're working on it. Nice project, I might have to use up some scraps and make one.

Don't use a candle...use a Battery powered "LED Flameless Flickering Tea Candle".

how do you stop the candal from burning the wood and maybe catching fire?

Why not use a glow stick? Green ones look really cool inside lanterns
LED tea lights are at the dollar store these days. No heat, no risk. You can even get flickering ones for a more candle-light-like feel.
