I started with tools I bought scouting estate sales. Then I upgraded when I learned which tools I used the most, and sold the old tools for about what I initially paid. I'm a bargain hunter and I always find new tools on sale, too. Black Friday is a great time to find deals.
Couldn't agree more. I think its like other people have said in the comments, If woodworking is something you want to do you will find a way to build up your tool collection, yard sales, estate sales, facebook marketplace etc. If not you'll just complain about tool prices!

I'm 2 years into woodworking and i do it as a part time hobby. The tools I started with were a hammer, a hand saw and 2 screwdrivers. That was some hard work for a year or so, but i got it done. I slowly bought electric tools and started taking on bigger projects that paid forbthe new tools. Now I'm purchasing bigger shop tools off of the money I've made from the side hustle.
I'm proof that you don't need a big shop with $10,000 in equipment.
Oh, my shop is a 7 × 5 enclosed trailer.

@@SageRosado You will get there. I have over 50 years in woodworking. Made a lot of money (Lost a lot of money).... Got into the Laundromat Business. And now have 3000 SqFt Shop. Sometimes you have to do other work to be able to afford your passion!

I would love to hang my Semi key and just work on my passion. But I know my hobby will not finance it self. Till then, one must continue to learn and grind.

I had no idea there was such a market for so many simple products. Let me clarify, that I think the items you are offering look great, but how many of us make some little simple things for ourselves or friends, that we don't realize there is an actual market for. That Solo cup and marker holder is something almost everyone who has parties, cookouts, etc. could use - genius.
I used to think the same way! my wife and others have been telling me for years to make stuff to sell and I always said who would pay for this stuff when they can make it themselves! I think more and more people are getting away from using tools and they would rather just pay someone to do it for them. Thanks for the comment brother!

I own a table saw, radial arm saw, router table, two decent miter saws, several drills, a name brand pocket hole jig, several sanders, and countless other tools... For under 500.00.

I love that you emphasized using simpler, less expensive tools to start out with. I am always saying stuff like that to people. Love the mountains, I have been meaning to make a set for my friend, got them all cut out, just need time to sand and paint them for her lol.
Thank you, I think people just don't know that because you see an expensive miter saw that doesn't mean you can't do the same thing with a cheaper on or even a hand saw in some cases. Good luck on the mountains, I'm sure they'll come out great.
I do not understand why people get all butthurt about seeing someone with a nice shop full of tools. when you are in to woodworking you LOVE to buy tools, at least that is the case for me and everyone I knew who is in the trades, not just woodworking, any tradesman will like upgrading their tools because it makes the work easier faster and better. I am a cabinet maker /cabinet installer and finish carpenter....needless to say I probably have more tools than the average guy out there that is just tinkering around. Lately I have been upgrading all my tools to Festool....totally unessisary and super expensive but they are just SO good it makes it an absolute joy to do things that I had grown tired of before.plus I have made enough money doing what I do that I can easily afford them so why not? I think maybe these people complaining about how many tools you have are those who 1) think woodworking is just super super easy and a way they can make money with no skills at all and 2)they want to make 100k a year with a hand saw and a hammer.....not gonna happen, you do need to invest in at least SOME tools if you are going to be effective at woodworking. I got started with about $250.00 worth of tools (30 years ago so now the same would prob cost say $750 - $1000) with that you can do something, then build on it.
Yes I couldn't agree more. Good for you brother, you are proof that hard work and dedication pays off. I have never used a Festool but I am so curious as to how well they work because of all the great things I hear about them. But I can understand the feeling us upgrading a tool and how much it improves the woodworking experience.

I've got a wood knik knack I made years ago for a useful purpose..and it works very well.
I've thought about making them and selling but I'm a procrastinator..and wouldn't know how to market it.
I started my Etsy shop in April 2023. I initially added some bottle openers, balancing wine bottle holders, plant stands and such and got nothing. I added a bird feeder and squirrel feeder a few weeks later and by August, I was blowin' and goin'. I also added some cedar jack o' lanterns for Halloween and those did well, too.
I have sold over 400 units since I started. Not quite the volume you have done but my items take a couple of days to make, plus I also have a day job. I'm averaging about 30 orders a month and that keeps me just busy enough that I don't feel overwhelmed.
The point is, it can be done. You gotta do your homework to find a good product, or set of products, to sell, but it can be done.
That's pretty awesome! Perserverance and some hard work. I'm pretty well set up to start.

You have a good point, its probably better to make more complex projects that have a higher price tag for not only that reason but also it may be more advantages to build less products for a higher price than to try to build a high volume of simple projects for a lower price. Less customers to deal with, less mailing, etc,

By making your wood grain go horizontally (< >), your mountains give the impression of layers you see in the earth.
I agree with you, that's why I love the stain instead of painting them. Its the same on the trees too.
Still have that dark blue Ryobi in my basement for mundane tasks when needed lol. It's not great but it does the trick.
I hate getting rid of tools, especially one that I used so much. It might sound weird but I feel like it got me through a lot!!😂

For something like these mountains, you don't even need power tools. For $25 you can get a hand saw and miter box combo. Boom, super cheap investment.
I mean, it's gonna suck cutting all that by hand but you get the point.
I do a lot of wood work and I've wanted to sell on Etsy, what I need to know is did you start a business first or start selling first? It seems like many people sell on Etsy but don't bother getting a business license, that makes me concerned about collecting sales tax and not filing as a business.

Great video. I love them. So all you use are 1x4s I can get at Home Depot?
Another thing to use are cedar or pine fence boards. Cedar cost about $3.00 & pine $5.00. They are about 1x6x6. Great craft wood.
Thank you for the comment. Yes just plain old 1x4s, and If you look they normally have a few 1x4s on their clearance cart in the lumber Isle for 80% off. When they get too bowed they put them there but they are still good for making mountains.

Dulb question but is your belt dander upside down. I have a belt sander but i always thought i needed a diff one to dand like that. Dad gave me an older electric but its wicked. Its not that old its just electric 😊

I had the same problem with Etsy. People copying and trying to start a price war.
YES, I had a few people do that to me, just keep lowering their prices until its not worth making anymore. I just stopped paying attention and started just trying to improve my listings, product quality and customer interactions.
Why use a brush and not spray the tops of the mountains? I paint wood lures and rarely use brush. Just curious.
When I first started I was using a chalk paint because it had the appearance of a snow like texture. I did spray some and then I went to using a white vinyl like they use in the cricut machines. that was the fastest and cleanest.
Can I ask a question,how much of your day/week is taken up with making these - is it a full time thing, or a side hustle alongside another (main) job? New subscriber by the way, excellent video.
Thank you, I appreciate the subscription and the comment. its a side thing after work and weekends but some days on the weekends it was 12-16 hours just before Christmas then it drastically slows down a week before Christmas.

Exactly. Best sales time is around the big holidays - xmas, thanksgiving, halloween, mothers day, valentines. Springtime - gardening items, Autumn - wintry things. I make & sell lots of things but i only charge for the wood. Example - birdhouse is $15.00, but i get the wood for $5.00. Three houses $45.00 per $5.00 board.
I used to tell my wife the same thing! she always told me to sell stuff I made on etsy and I would say whos gonna pay for this, they can make it themselves!! But you would be surprised how many people like handmade items but they cant or don't want to make them themselves!

I often found people copying my work on Etsy so I kind of gave up on it and focus on my own website instead now. Haven't made many sales in the last year on Etsy. Guess I'm not a smart fella after all 😢
I don't know what you are selling so I'm not sure how helpful my advice will be. I had a hard time in the beginning on etsy too. I wasn't selling much either until I realized there's rules to the game of selling on etsy. (I guess selling in general) I started by just making stuff I liked and thought other people would like too but I wasn't selling much. So I read some stuff and watched some UA-cam videos like you are doing and I realized what I was doing wrong. You have to research what people want and what's trending and most importantly what people are searching for. If people aren't looking for your stuff then they wont find it. You have to put popular keywords in your title and for your keywords. So you are a smart feller you just don't have the knowledge you need but you are smart because you are here looking for it.
Thanks for your kind and encouraging words and for taking the time to reply. Yes I should do some more research on Etsy one day. I do think Etsy is harder to get working well for sellers here in Australia though. Many people I speak to have never even heard of it, some just assume it's a US only shopping site. Etsy spend our money on US advertising and push us all for free shipping which makes it impossible to make profit here.

No its a few years worth of sales. I really only sold through the holiday months October to January. That's the busiest time on Esty. I could have stayed open all year but it was a lot to keep up with and still work.
What venues do you sell on?
Mostly etsy but bigger stuff on Facebook marketplace and word of mouth.
Sorry if I missed it, but the end bit about "I've made $18k selling these", did you say over what kind of time frame? Cause if it was 10 years that's not great, but if that was 6 months or a year, that's pretty good
no you didn't really miss it. I think I just said I've been on Esty since 2019 but I didn't say when I started the mountains. I had to do some digging but I sold my first mountains in Nov 2020. Then Then I was only open from October to January and I closed this year in January. so all together probably two years. but the mountains were only on item I had listed in my shop.

With etsy please be careful. They have canceled several people's accounts for bs reasons. But yes these are great ideas.

I have seen videos where people take their hand held senders and make a jig to use them like a bench top sander. I bet you could find a video on UA-cam. I got mine from Amazon, they have some pretty inexpensive one on there or if there's a harbor freight where you live they have a few different inexpensive ones.

yes that's the best way to do it! I'm always looking on Facebook marketplace too because yard sales are getting so hard to find good stuff because everyone is looking find and flip yard sale finds. You gotta get out early.
@@jascogoods I’ve been really lucky to have come across older folks that are retiring from woodworking and wanting to sell off their tool and equipment. Sometimes I leave with more than I went there for , such as hard woods like oak , cherry and walnut. Great for cutting boards. The thing is the old guys just want someone to listen to their stories. No problem, especially if their stories are interesting.
My question is simple, How long did it take you to sell this and make that profit? It could of been a day or several years, so how fast was it until your first sale?
I was selling other things on Esty before this. But as for the mountains it was only a week or so before I started getting sales. There seems to be a delay of a week or two when you put new products on etsy. It helps to pay for advertising through etsy, at least the minimum of $5 a day.

I'm not sure, I was also surprised how popular mountains were. I think its what they represent to people. I believe the wood mountain represents nature with the wood texture and the scenic aspect of the majestic mountains.

I found your shop on Etsy today (7/2/24), but there are no items for sale. Why are not any products for sale on your Etsy shop?
I Usually only sell from October to January. Where I live in Vegas is really hot (111 today) so Its brutal to work in there in the summer. The busy time on etsy is September to January. Plus I'm trying to build up my UA-cam right now.
I found a mitre saw and a table saw both lightly used for about $50 each. I lucked out though

Used circular saw for like 30 bucks. You can make damn near anything with just that.
These are good products for Etsy..marketplace is full of widow shoppers that ask if it's still available and never respond..

I used to work in the parking lot, of my apartment complex, surrounded by gangbangers. I didn't even own a car back then, because every vehicle would get broken into, in that neighborhood, so I hauled lumber in a modified baby cart, towed behind my bicycle. I had to carry my tablesaw down three flights of stairs, and hang an extension cord from my window, but I made decent money. You'd be surprised by how much drug dealers will pay, for a simple locking wooden box. A lot of them have kids, but they don't want their kids getting into their stash, and they always pay cash. The married ones were the best, because their wives had expensive tastes. I furnished the entire apartment of more than one of them. I made bed frames, benches, tables, chairs, cabinets, and decorative items, with less than $1000 in equipment.
The amount of equipment you have, is less a factor to your success, than your willingness to succeed. I've rebuilt my business four times, because I tend to date crazy women. It's my own fault, and that's why I'm staying single this time. Only you can overcome your shortcomings, and only you can build your success.

You should write a book or something because that was seriously interesting. I am always surprised at how much people are willing to spend for handmade items but maybe because we came up making our own stuff and not relying on anyone else. Thanks for the comment brother.

Do you get hit on taxes a lot? I'm doing this as a hobby but i want to start selling and don't want to get screwed by the government.
When I first started I didn't even worry about it because Esty said you had to make over 20k before it was reported but then the rule changed to $600 so I started claiming everything. It wasn't too bad because I was buying tools and writing them off so it was like I was breaking even.
This is so weird to me. What do people do with the random mountains? Put it on their desks?

Vinyl like from a Cricut machine. They start at about $150, but you can find them used real cheap.
You could hand cut a stencil and use white spray paint as an alternative

@@Waciglass you could, but the paint blows under around the edges, so it would work for a couple, then the bottom would be transferring paint where you don’t want it.
I was using sheets of vinyl that is typically used in a cricut machine but I just cut them into strips and cut out the peaks with an exacto knife. I didn't use the machine and you can buy sheets of vinyl from walmart for a few bucks or a whole roll on amazon for less than $10. Thank you. had to look on their site so see the current fees. Every listing you post is .20 cents. Then when you make a sale theres a transaction fee of 6.5% and a processing fee of 3%. The biggest expense is shipping.

Does Etsy have something set up or do you have to do it (postage, labels, etc.) Are there discounts from USPS for makes doing mass mailings or is it the same price as me wanting to ship something to a friend? I have noticed that postage has gotten really expensive in the last 10 years or so.

Hey Ron, thank you for your service brother. I am not sure but I believe that number is before Esty takes their fees. There are other calculations you can look at on Esty that show you profit after fees but its for everything you sell. The numbers I was showing was specific for just the mountains and is the only way to see your sales on a specific item the whole time you have been selling it. The 15k took a few years to make. I sold on Esty mostly October to January because that's their busy season. this was just an after work hobby to make some extra money to fund the hobby! I didn't want you to think I made 15K in a few days.

it's sad that people will steal ideas, I guess the only way around it is to build pieces that they don't have the skill to make.
We all steal ideas normally. We often have our own takes of stuff but it’s actually stealing really. And I don’t have a problem with it. As long as a diff take of it. Or you could think that its we just love the idea. And with woodworking, is there really a exact copy without templates.
Unless you invent something, you are stealing someone's idea. Every single part of woodworking and every part of our lives is stealing ideas.
Most people call this leaning from others to expand their knowledge and skills.

so I think I said when I started on Esty and how long I've been doing it. I actually had to look back but to find out but I sold my first set of mountains in Nov of 2020. But I was only open in the peak months from October to January. I've been closed now since January. So total combined time probably 2 years. I also sold more than just mountains.
So, not all your profit came only from the triangles, well don’t say so!

I like making items like these but I really detest the shipping part of the equation.
Yea the shipping is brutal. Luckily I had my wife help me with the shipping a lot. One thing that helped with the shipping is printing my own labels through Esty so I only had to drop the stuff off at the post office. No more standing in lines.
Postal rates are increasing again. Unfortunately, they’re going to kill sales of low dollar items. It costs $3.96 in postage alone to ship a single CD, and that’s with the Amazon shipping discount. Etsy could be the hardest hit.
$10,000 shop tools? I have at least 70k worth of tools collected over 40 years. People complain about a lot.... but I did not realize they were that CHEAP too!
😂😂😂 WOW thats a lot of tools! Yea I don't get how they don't get the concept of building up your tool collection and building your own stuff. I justify the tool cost by the savings of buiding / fixing your own stuff!
I could never be a business owner because I can't understand why anyone buys little trinkets like this. I mean, apparently they do, I'm not throwing any shade at the guy making money selling them, I just really don't have an understanding of why anyone wants it.
I completely understand, I am not good at decorating or knowing what people are into either. Luckily my wife is good at it and everything looks good to me. If it was up to be I'd still have posters of rock bands and Christy Brinkley on the walls.

Every place to sell online has been cracking down on tracking profits. I think they made a new law a few years ago that all the online marketplaces have to report payments higher than $600. Your best bet is probably craft fairs and places like that. I have heard you can make a good profit there without all the shipping and fees you pay online.
