Kiki Dee had a hit two years earlier with 'I've Got the Music in Me' which you'd enjoy. With Elton you need to do 'Your Song', 'Tiny Dancer', 'Bennie & the Jets', 'Rocket Man', 'Levon', 'Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters', 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' among a couple of hundred others.
Love Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters....first time I ever hear it done was by Ann and Nancy Wislon of Heart at the Paramount in Seattle. Fell in love with that song! Funeral for a Friend /Love Lies Bleeding in its entirety!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
This was on the radio almost nonstop in '76/'77, and really creates an Earworm. So many Elton John hits did the same regarding Earworms (Bernie Taupin wrote lyrics/prose and Elton set them to music) and best to hit studio album track first; DANIEL, ROCKET MAN, FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND/LOVE LIES BLEEDING, TINY DANCER, CANDLE IN THE WIND (from 1973), CROCODILE ROCK, BENNY AND THE JETS, SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTIN' and so many others, but those will get you started.
I totally agree. I always loved this song and I also loved the one with George Michael. I haven't seen any Billy Joel music unless I missed it. I have always loved queen, billy joel, Elton john.
Elton was a phenomenon - he set music to words which is opposite what most people do and wrote everything including rock, ballads and musical scores Best IMO is Madman Across The Water and Levon - also the simplicity of his first hit Your Song
I’m old enough to have seen this when it was originally shown on ‘The Midnight Special’ which aired on Friday nights. Best music show ever! Thanks for the fun walk down memory lane!
We initially watched Bandstand with it's dancing and lip sync performances but as we got older The Midnight Special was epic with it's LIVE performances.
That's SIR Elton John as he was knighted on February 24th, 1988. He was awarded the title of Knight Bachelor for "services to music and charitable services". You should watch him as the Pinball Wizard from The Who's rock opera "Tommy".
Her hit: "I Got the Music In Me", is easily as catchy and, simultaneously, an even better showcase of a very under-appreciated, overlooked, and undeniably amazing vocalists of the Era (one that I believe may be to blame for Miss Dee's lack of recognition; wrong place, wrong time sort of thing!) Anyways; if You liked this song with Sir Elton, You definitely won't be disappointed by this solo hit!!! ♥︎SalvoG♡◆♡
Most of us didn’t see the video until VH1 started playing retro videos a decade or two later. But we sure heard it on the radio in the summer of ‘76. It was *everywhere.*
It originally aired at midnight on the Midnight special. The song actually debuted then and there. I waited up to see Elton play live and they showed this video.
I've always loved this song, and you were right, it was a HUGE hit. I love your observation that you would never match Elton's face with his voice. I've been listening to him for over 50 years and can only imagine his face with his voice. He's a spectacular artist. Check out next: Tiny Dancer, IMO his greatest song, and Bennie and the Jets, his most soulful song. More Elton please!
Kiki Dee was so underrated, great voice and so talented. I remember back in the day you could turn the radio on and before long this song would play. It got so much air time.
This song rates high on the "Guilty Pleasure" ledger, and is always fun to sing loudly in public with a friend. Extra points if you can hit Kiki Dee's high notes!
Comment? Thx for playing it. For fun duet, best, this one. 2nd, Whenever I call you friend, 3rd, Lether and Lace, 4th Lady Lionel and Kenny live, 5ttht, Islands in the stream. Missed about 40 or so. Thanks for the gtrat music ❤
Shot to number one in the UK because of its infectious melody, appealing to everyone of all ages, kids would be singing along with their grandmas. Kiki had a great voice and I’d thoroughly recommend “Star” by her,it’s a banger.
My all time favorite singer. :D I remember when this was a hit on the radio, you couldn't listen without singing along or at least moving to it. Definitely catchy! Looking forward to more Elton reactions.
The 1976 drought in the UK, a really hot summer. Kiki went to London in 64 as a 16 year old, made a lot of records, worked a lot with Dusty Springfield, had her moment in the 70s and now in her mid 70s is still working.
Love this song and your reaction is so refreshing. I’m so confident you would LOVE the one with Elton, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder called “That’s what Friends are For”. It’s like catching lightening in a bottle…really! Enjoy. ❤️🔥
When this song came out, I was 14. I went on our annual week long vacation at a resort in Upstate New York. I had a major crush on this waiter that served our table every day. Think of the movie "Dirty Dancing" and you'll get the perfect setting. This song came on, the waiter and other workers was in the amusement room with the pinball machines, pool table and all of the teenagers hanging out dancing, etc. I went into another room to cry because of this crush, and he came in that room and sat down next to me. Lol. If I could only be that age again and know what I know now.
Kiki Dee was ADORABLE in this. Oh...yeah...about the song. Very, very catchy. And well-written. Notice how the key changes for just a measure or two at the second "ewww ewww" then drops back in? Elton John was a very good songwriter.
I absolutely love this song. It brings me back to the summer of 1976 during the bicentennial. What an awesome time. The other song that was very popular that summer was "afternoon delight".
ELTON HAD THAT POWER HIGH PITCH RANGE FOR A SOLID 20 YEARS SALVO ( 70-90 ) 😊 THEN HE HAD HIS VOCAL OPERATION ON HIS VOCAL CHORDS 😮YEAH HE HAD SO SO MANYYYY GREAT ROCK SONGS AND HE DID ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING SO 💯
Love Don't Go Breaking My Heart!! Elton is my Fav! I repeat it multiple times. Kiki and EJ blend so well. You need to review Eltons Funeral for a Friend /Love Lies Bleeding !! Start to finish! Soooo sooooo good!!
When Bernie Taupin ( Elton John's Songwriting Partner ) was asked what song of his own doesn't he like, and this was the track he said he's least proud of, still that's his perogative he was the creator of this classic, however I have to say there are a lot more contenders for the crown of annoying songs, I personally think it's quite a sweet track and very radio freindly and great chemistry between the two of them, Great react buddy.
I love all of Elton John's early music, Kiki Dee has a great song "I've Got The Music in Me" is a great video. This was a very popular song in the 70's.
Kiki was signed to Elton’s label Rocket Records when they recorded this. Kiki was around in the 60s and recorded a few albums in the 60s and 70s and in recent years has reimagined this song in her live performances as a ballad. The b side was Snow Queen. Then in the 90s they duetted on a cover of Cole Porter’s song “True Love” which hit #2 in the UK.
Another of Elton's later pop classics is "I'm Still Standing" which also has an infectious poppy bop. From his classic era, I'd recommend "Sixty Years On", "Border Song", "Rocket Man", "Honky Cat" and "Burn Down The Mission"
Had to take the day off yesterday to help my son move and I'm playing catch up... I'm looking forward to this one as it's a classic that everyone has to hear and I'm glad you finally made it..
That performance is so joyful. And I’d forgotten how rich the vocals were. This was from the year we got married. Such an innocent time. I’m so grateful I was born when I was. Try Elton John’s “Madman Across the Water.” I was about to suggest some other tracks, but there are just too many great ones. And you can only listen to one at a time.
I'm very happy that Dusty was ill that day, this song would be very different with her as the female lead. It might still be good, but it would be very different! I always loved Kiki's innocence!
I've always loved just about every era of Elton John, but my favorite is early Elton. His album, Tumbleweed Connection, is so real and natural, and it was just before he had some breakout commercial hits. However, you get to really hear a raw and passionate Elton, and it's fabulous.❤
Elton ruled the pop charts, especially in the 70s. Fans always want the deep cuts, but IMO it really helps to hit the highlights first. Pick any of these: Your Song, Daniel, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Honky Cat, Bennie and the Jets, Crocodile Rock, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Philadelphia Freedom, Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Rocket Man, Levon, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Pinball Wizard (from "Tommy," the Who's rock opera), Tiny Dancer, I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues, The Bitch Is Back, I'm Still Standing, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (Beatles cover), Island Girl, Little Jeanie. All big hits. Hardest rockers? Probably Bitch, Saturday Night, Philly, Island, Honky, Pinball, and Crocodile. Most unique? Levon.
Elton John was on fire in the 1970's. His double album called Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was the biggest selling album of 1974 and had two #1 and another top 20 hit. They are ; Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Bennie And The Jets and Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting. This whole album is fire and must be heard!😮😊
Elton was always catchy with a zany personality and bizarre style. Very entertaining. And their voices do SO well together. Huge hit (because everyone kept sayin' it...."don't go breakin' my heart').
This is a great duet from 1976. John was supposed to sing this with Dusty Springfield but she was too ill at the time. Kiki Dee is known for her blue-eyed soul vocals & she was the first female singer from the UK to sign with Motown. She performed another duet with John in 1993 for his "Duets" album called "True Love". She had some hits in the 70's-80's such as "Amoureuse", "I've Got The Music", "Star" etc.
I have absolutely ADORED this song since I was little. the first time I heard it was on this minnie mouse tv special from the 80s - “totally minnie.” it was full of all kinds of celebs, and included elton doing this as a duet with minnie mouse. 😂😂 so good!
This song was also in the movie Ella Enchanted with Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy. It's such a wonderful film. A feel-good movie to watch. The song is performed at the end of the movie. Worth a watch.
SalvoG, I have to recommend another AWESOME diet... Phillip Bailey from Earth, Wind & Fire with Phil Collins. "Easy Lover". I'm not a pop music fan, but I think this is the most perfect pop song ever. BTW...get back to Rush!!!😂
Give a listen to anything from Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. It’s his autobiographical album and it is excellent. Try the title song or Someone Saved My Life Tonight. Epic!
love when you do the videos. Would love to see you do a reaction to a duet by Susie Quatro and Chris Norman called "Stumblin in. Such a fun duet to watch , one of my favorites.
I was a kid when this came out and it was on the radio all the time. It was (is) a fun, catchy song that had a big impact on my developing musical taste! Next I think you should listen to "Philadelphia Freedom" from about the same time period, another great catchy upbeat song!
Another great duet is Elton with John Lennon "Whatever Gets You Through The Night." In the video Elton tries to teach Lennon the Bump. OK I made that last part up.
Phew, thats a blast from the past. It was everywhere when ot first came out. Not Reg at his best IMO : cant get better than Yellow Brick Road and its era .
Until 1990 this was his only uk number 1 single, amazingly (Chart topping singles in US,and albums ditto on both sides of pond...he'd have to wait until 1990's Sacrifice to have a SOLO uk chart topping single)🎩
Funny you say you could listen to this song over and over and over. My brother did before school for a couple of weeks til I tossed it out the window like a frisbee.😝😝
So many good Elton John Songs: Funeral for friend Madman Across the water Daniel Levon Tiny Dancer Border song Saw him this past Fall and still sounds great
When this first came out I thought it must be a cover, as it was so catchy and commercial. But Elton and Bernie had been writing for years, they could do virtually anything, In what will be your almost endless quest to find out what Elton is all about, let me throw four songs at you that he wrote with a lyricist other than Bernie Taupin. There's something unusual! First, Tom Robinson, who was a popular performer in his own right. The song is 'Never Gonna Fall In Love Again'. (Though you could choose 'Sartorial Eloquence' instead.) Second, Tim Rice, who first came to fame writing the words to Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. He also wrote The Lion King songs with Elton. My choice is from The Road to El Dorado, and it's 'Friends Never Say Goodbye'. Third, Gary Osborne, who wrote for Elton when Elton and Bernie had a domestic. The song is 'It Ain't Gonna Be Easy'. Fourth, Judy Tzuke. Judy was a popular singer in her own right, and recorded for Elton's Rocket Records. The song is 'Give Me the Love'. I suspect some of these may be new to more casual EJ listeners, but they are deep dives, deep beautiful dives. All of these, and so many more, add up to why EJ is my favourite artist of all time.
I loved this song when it first came out but never had the benefit of that video until recently. I think if it got more play it would have been an even bigger hit because it is so cute.
I’m a huge Sir Elton John fan, love his music and I’ve seen him in concert, this song is ok but I wouldn’t listen to it often, it’s not bad, remember Elton writes the music and Bernie writes the lyrics. Elton has so many great records that this rabbit hole will you awhile but it’s definitely worth your time
Kiki Dee had a hit two years earlier with 'I've Got the Music in Me' which you'd enjoy. With Elton you need to do 'Your Song', 'Tiny Dancer', 'Bennie & the Jets', 'Rocket Man', 'Levon', 'Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters', 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' among a couple of hundred others.
Strongly agree, and 'Gray Seal'
I would only add "Crocodile Rock to this list.
Why was that her US hit? Look at her UK hits.
I would also add Bitch is Back!
And Philadelphia Freedom!
Love Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters....first time I ever hear it done was by Ann and Nancy Wislon of Heart at the Paramount in Seattle. Fell in love with that song!
Funeral for a Friend /Love Lies Bleeding in its entirety!!! ❤❤❤❤❤

This is my childhood. I mean, it’s a warm, soft blanket for me. Love it!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Same. I was 8 and happy as a clam that summer.
This…
CONTAGIOUS is the best word to describe this song; when it hit the airwaves it just dominated that year! GLAD you got to listen to this classic.
Salvo, a great duet from 1976. Elton and Kiki. Another Amazing duet with Elton John and George Michael. "Don't Let the Sun go Down on Me".
I totally agree. I always loved this song and I also loved the one with George Michael. I haven't seen any Billy Joel music unless I missed it. I have always loved queen, billy joel, Elton john.
@@angelark2011 Billy Joel is one of my favorite singers too. I hope Salvo does Piano Man someday.
@@jodij6280 It would be great if he listened to Piano Man. Billy Joel has a lot of good songs and I think he would enjoy some of them.
Elton was a phenomenon - he set music to words which is opposite what most people do and wrote everything including rock, ballads and musical scores
Best IMO is Madman Across The Water and Levon - also the simplicity of his first hit Your Song
Of all the songs that Elton has Levon is my favorite.
Sang Your Song as an 18yr old to this out of my league stunner……it worked.
I've always loved this song. It's such a feel-good tune!
To get a feel for Elton’s voice, watch his video for "Your Song." It’s him at the piano, and his first big hit.
it is impossible to hear this song and not smile
I’m old enough to have seen this when it was originally shown on ‘The Midnight Special’ which aired on Friday nights. Best music show ever! Thanks for the fun walk down memory lane!

Yes. I remember this being one of the first music videos on TV. Other than Abba! Classic!
I just realized that your curiosity is part of what propels the success of your channel. How stupid of me not to recognize this earlier!

Same thing with Phil Collins. Looking at him, you wouldn't think he had such a fantastic voice.
Kiki Dee was so underrated, great voice and so talented. I remember back in the day you could turn the radio on and before long this song would play. It got so much air time.
Just a light fun little song with two great singers. Something we don't really see anymore.
Kiki Dee should be a world-wide star. She had a voice for rock and r&b,like you wouldn’t believe. So ridiculously underrated.
This song rates high on the "Guilty Pleasure" ledger, and is always fun to sing loudly in public with a friend. Extra points if you can hit Kiki Dee's high notes!

This song/video of them is so catchy. Her looks and personality here are unbelievably cute and voice that matches so well with Elton’s.
Ahhhhh…… the sound of the 70’s can’t be duplicated !!! Had to live them to truly feel the vibe, what a time to live and feel free ❤️
Kiki Dee was ADORABLE in this. Oh...yeah...about the song. Very, very catchy. And well-written. Notice how the key changes for just a measure or two at the second "ewww ewww" then drops back in? Elton John was a very good songwriter.
Elton’s long time guitarist dated Kiki Dee for years, she sang backup vocals on a few of Eltons songs.
Oldie but goodie... one of my fav duets of all time.
I absolutely love this song. It brings me back to the summer of 1976 during the bicentennial. What an awesome time. The other song that was very popular that summer was "afternoon delight".

You'll like Elton's early stuff, like "Your Song" "Levon" "Tiny Dancer" "Madman Across the Water"
Recorded while he was working on his "Blue Moves" album but he thought it didn't fit on the album style wise so they just released it as a single.
Kiki Dee ... Amoureuse. Youre welcome 😊
So many good Elton John Songs:
Funeral for friend
Madman Across the water
Daniel
Levon
Tiny Dancer
Border song
Saw him this past Fall and still sounds great
Don't forget 'Someone Save My Life Tonight'. No one ever mentions it.

In my book, the 2nd best bubblegum pop song ever made!!
When this first came out I thought it must be a cover, as it was so catchy and commercial. But Elton and Bernie had been writing for years, they could do virtually anything,
In what will be your almost endless quest to find out what Elton is all about, let me throw four songs at you that he wrote with a lyricist other than Bernie Taupin. There's something unusual!
First, Tom Robinson, who was a popular performer in his own right. The song is 'Never Gonna Fall In Love Again'. (Though you could choose 'Sartorial Eloquence' instead.)
Second, Tim Rice, who first came to fame writing the words to Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.
Salvo, pleeease turn the volume up. Sometimes it's low at times. I had it at fukll volume with headphones on and it was low. Keep up the great work!
Elton has so many great records that this rabbit hole will you awhile but it’s definitely worth your time
Philadelphia Freedom is an underrated hit and one of those "so good" songs from Elton. Check that out.
